Decent Fajitas Smile Feb 16, 2013
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I grew up in Texas. I don't expect very much from Texas-themed restaurants and that's good, because they don't deliver much. Still, I'm not a food snob, and if I can get something that approximates good Texas cooking, I won't begrudge it, even if it is tacky as all get-out. Anthony's Ranch is OK, but by Hong Kong standards, it's pretty good. I ordered the fajitas. Some thoughts:

chopstickTortillas: At a number of Tex-Mex places I've been to in HK, the tortillas are flat and lifeless. These didn't suffer from the same malady, so that's a huge plus, but they were oddly toasted and a little crispy. I don't know why. B-

chopstickSides: Even in Texas, they will rarely give you cheese AND guacamole with your fajitas-- just one or the other, or you can pay for both. Here you get both, plus you get two kinds of cheese. No idea what that's about, but awesome. The pico was OK, and I could swear that the "salsa" was just canned tomato sauce. B+

chopstickFajita veggies: Nothing spectacular, but definitely serviceable. Hard to mess up onions and peppers. B+

chopstickFajita meat: The two other times I've had fajitas in HK were at Tequila (awful) and Caramba! (bad). The steak at Anthony's was much better. Still not right-- you want a good sear on the outside, a little bit of pink left on the inside, and intense fajita marinade flavor. This was more like mildly flavored, reasonably tender steak, which in itself blows chewy (Caramba!) or Asian-flavored (Tequila) stuff out of the water. B

In addition, I am in a position to review:

chopstick1/2 rack ribs: My wife got these. I started to eat one but I dropped it on the floor. Anyway, she says they were pretty good and that she couldn't really think of what else she'd want out of ribs. At dinner, I recall her saying they were "meaty." She gives them A-

chopstickJalapeno poppers: Just like the ones from the states, probably because they're the same frozen kind that you get there. Anyway, it's a recipe that's rarely improved upon. They serve them with ranch dressing, which is a very nice touch if you ask me. A+

Summing up, I would come back here. That's saying a lot, considering that there's no small number of "Texas" places (in particular, Tex-Mex) in HK that I won't be coming back to. The only bad part of the visit was that my friend, who was a vegetarian, ordered the veggie burger, and they were out. He wound up getting Eggplant Napoleon, which I think he thought was good?

    Overall: B+
    Supplementary Information:
They have pitchers, but they call them "jugs."

I have dined here many times with the food of acceptable albeit expensive quality. I've even had a drink with friends even more times. However this evening was my last ever visit.

We were looking for a family meal before we walked home and unfortunately the better quality and cheaper priced restaurant in the square we normally use was fully booked. So we walked across and were tempted by the set meal for 2 and kids meals. First thing was that the air con was at summer power so we had to go upstairs to feel normal.

We ordered our food only to be told the set meal was Monday to Friday only. It doesn't mention this anywhere in the menu or anywhere in the restaurant. The only alternative was to order from the extremely overpriced menu. Classic bait and switch and this isn't Nathan Road. Our kids were so hungry we ordered kids meals only, we refused to eat overpriced food on a con. So no drinks, no adult orders. I took cash including the stupid 10%, didn't even wait for a bill. Paid and left. What was to be a family meal completely ruined. If I was to feed the kids at that quality I would have just taken the to McD for a third of the price and equivalent quality.

So myself I will never go back for food or a drink.
    Supplementary Information:
There is a menu but this menu does not actually represent what is available at all time with no notes to allow people to make informed decisions.

Well, how do I start, with a negative....??...smile thinking.... wait for it... 0 nothing... oh they did not know my name.... The first time I went in. They did after that.
I have eaten at Anthony's Ranch 3 times now and it is excellent every time... maybe I just got lucky, but food, service, staff---BEER awesome. You really gotta try the Smoked Ribs, NY Steak (cooked exactly the way I ordered it) and best of all the freezing cold BEER!!! Look I can go on and on but I finally found MY PLACE in Sai kung and it's always busy so don't go.... more room for ME.... big portions.... you can tell it is homemade... and I can tell how fresh. This is a American Cowboy place so don't be scared of the ---REAL GUNS--- and Americans there... they are all safe.... over and out!
    Supplementary Information:
I park out front...Ask for the manager... he is cool... they will drive you home in your car if you drink too much.... hay not ME!!!

More a pub than a restaurant Cries Feb 13, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Do not get me wrong. waiting time outside is "0". But we had to wait ...wait... wait for 40-45 minutes after we placed our order before being served.
Overpriced and the meat we have ordered did not have time to defrost. May be the bsuienss at the pub is much better, better profit margin, they did not put their heart in serving dinner anymore.
It will be a long long time before I come again.
Big disappointment. Over 300 dollars each head without drink.

Food presentation is messy, tasted terrible.
I myself have ordered steak (medium) whereas my kids had chicken combo.
The steak was raw with blood seeping. I think the defrost time is not enough. Either they has forgot / lost the order and made up in a hurry.
Color? It was dark and you could not tell if the meat was brown , red, or black. I did not finish the food.

Service is no good either. We sat on the 2nd floor and nobody bothered to come up. They all stayed down stair on the ground floor.
One good thing was that the environment was quiet upstair, and we all liked their furnitures.
By the time we left, the tables outside were fully occupied and lot of people smoking.

Do not come here for meal!!!

I had a private party with some HKUST friends at Anthony's Ranch. The atmosphere was very TEXAS! We could see "bulls" everywhere. They even have real guns as decoration, which is very impressive!

Each table we had 2 big dishes which had been pre-ordered by the organiser. The first one was snacks combo which included Baby Back Rib, Deep Fried Pickles, Chicken Wings and something deep fried with cheese ( I'm not sure what it was ). Ribs is my all-time favourite. Anthony's Ranch provides baby ribs with tender meat. The sauce is tangy. The chicken wings taste okay. It could be better if it was not that dry. This is the first time I tried deep fried pickles. The sour taste makes it a good choice for appetizer. I like the deep fried thing with cheese. The cheese tastes so good!

The second dish we had was Chips and Salsa. We were served with 4 kinds of sauces. The chips smell buttery. The texture is limp. When they come together with baked cheese, they are irresistible. Among the sauces, I love cream cheese most. It mixes the best with the chips.

The waiters and waitresses are friendly. They fulfilled our requests very quickly.

We did not order any drinks. I wish we'd had more dishes! I will definitely go again!

Fantastic Food!!! Smile Nov 17, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Actually, in the beginning, I just saw the French Fries, and the fried food, I assumed the Anthony's Ranch in Maxican setting but provided American food. Seeing the oil at the surface of the food, I really didn't want to eat. I didn't want to be fatter after eating those fatty food. But, finally I tried it and out of expectation, it tasted fairly good. And my buddy said it was Texas food,, and geographically Texas is really closed to Mexico. So, the style of the antipasto is entirely Taxas. But most fantastic delicacy I tried was the crisp. The chip is quite crispy!!! With a variety of sauces, which I cannot name sad it is really tasty. If you're fans of Mc Donald's or KFC, but fear the oily food causes obesity, this restaurant can eliminate your concern.

Overall, not only the food, the environment is also really romantic and light is dim, suitable for a group of friends or a couple. With the decoration of Texas culture, Anthony's Ranch is really worth going for dinner.

The restaurant is around the corner of Yi Chun Street. When I arrived, I was impressed by the big ox head sculpture above the door. The ambience inside was exhilarating. Dim lights with light music made the relaxing atmosphere for eating. Going upstairs and sitting down, I looked around and found many paintings on the wall and it was nice to have such a meal with these masterpieces. The waitresses were polite in their demeanor, and the service was prompt.
First came the salad. The lettuce was crispy and sweet. The Chicken Salad was also tasty. Then came the Buffalo Chicken Wings and Ribs Starter. I think these two dishes are all specialties of Anthony’s Ranch. The wings were seared and showing the dark color. It tasted OK but I thought it was a little old. The Ribs Starter was wondrous. It was tender and delicious. But there was one dish that I didn’t like. It was fried vinegary cucumber and it was overly acidic. After I enjoyed the crispy outside it, I was so disappointed with the thing inside that I nearly wanted to spit out it.
The cost was $100 per person, which was a little high for me. But I thought it was worth it.
Generally speaking, Anthony’s Ranch is a wonderful place to go to have a western dinner, and you can often meet foreigners in it, listening to them telling funny stories about their life. That’ll be a pleasant experience.

Dinner at Anthony's Ranch  Just OK Nov 16, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
We had a dinner today at Anthony's Ranch bowl haha...of course we didn't eat rice.
Our menu looked fabulous and I can hardly wait.
    Menu
    Deep Fried Pickles
    Jalapeño Poppers
    Buffalo Chicken Wings
    Ribs Starter
    Chicken Salad

I love Buffalo Chicken Wings and Ribs Starter, both of which are appetizing and palatable. Two sauces are rich, one a little spicy, one sweet and sour. But I don't like pickles, for it tastes too vinegary. For salad, if there was more, it should have been better. Poppers are just poppers, nothing too special. We are served flat water. But if we were willing to pay, there should be nicer drink. Actually, we only paid 100, maybe we should pay more to get a more elegant dinner.
Service there was pretty impressive. Waitresses' attitudes toward customers are good. Dressed properly, they are more than helpful, since they speak fluent English, there is no difficulty for a foreigner to communicate with them. All of them are polite enough that you feel as if you are someone really important.
As to price, it's a lot expensive in that we have two de facto main dishes, shared by four or more people.
Whole atmosphere there is good enough to remind you of the classical texas restaurants. Dim light and a sense of dizzy mixed with laughing and talking. Quite unforgettable.
In a word, anyone who hasn't been there should try at least once.

    A fantastic restaurant Smile Nov 15, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I went to the Anthony's Ranch this Monday evening with my Elbs members. Because we reserved the tables, we do not need to wait for our mealsmile)). I was really hungry at that time. The food smelled so appetizing that I can't wait for the dishes. The first dish was the chicken salad. The chicken tasted very good, but the salas sauce seemed not enough so that the cabbage under the chicken was quite tasteless. The deep fried pickles was really good, especially with the cheese sauce. By the way, I love the sauce there. I tried five, all of them were awesome. Then we tried the jalapeno pepper. This was my favorite, the cheese inside was fantastic. It was my first time to have pepper and cheese together. After that was the ribs starter, it's just okay in my opinion, nothing's special. The last one was buffalo chicken wings. I have to say I didn't't enjoy this one much. It tasted a bit too dry for me and there was not much meat on the wings.
ALL IN ALL, the restaurant is very good. Worth of trying.

    It's worth a try Smile Nov 15, 2011

The food there is tasty and well-prepared. The pork chop is tender, juicy and fresh. Salad is awesome, too. The lettuce in salad is fresh and crispy. I like chicken wing the most. And the fried pickle is a very novel recipe that I haven’t tried before. Besides, you can also have many dressing and sauce to choose to add, spicy or other kinds. It will be better if we have the dessert after the main course, like a cake or an ice-cream.tongue

Service is really good, they serve the water and dishes very quickly.

Value, to be honest, the food there is a little bit expensive, because after eating, we are not very full, just not hungry. (HKD100 per person)

The decoration is very Indian, having cow head and snake head on the wall and also the Anthony's Ranch cow head logo on each table. The dim light makes us have the feel of original nature.

Location is obvious, very easy to find. Because you will see a big cow head at the entrance.

Overall, recommend to go there and have a try. You won’t regret.

Went to this American-style restaurant because of a social gathering with my schoolmates. It’s a place which can be found very easily in the corner of Yi Chun street in downtown area of Sai Kung. It is decorated with the feeling in Texas. The environment is clear and not noisy. The staff and owner were easy-going and chatted with us friendly and warmly.

We tried deep fried pickles, Jalapeno poppers, Buffalo chicken wings, baby ribs starter, and American-style chicken salad. The Chicken salad was really fresh, crispy, sweet. I like the ribs starter most. They were cooked perfectly, very tender, very juicy, very yummy! The Buffalo chicken wings tasted a little bit dry and old, it seemed that they had been overcooked. It is my first time to try Mexican Jalapeno poppers. They had some special taste. I like the smooth cheese in them. The deep fried pickles were also good, but a little bit bland when comparing with the ribs.

We all enjoyed a happy moment tonight. It’s indeed a good choice for people who want to try American style(especially Texas’ style) food.

This was my first visit to Anthony's Ranch. The service was excellent. Although I am not used to western food, I have to admit if you want "true" American cuisine this is the right place. We have had the Deep Fried Pickles, Jalapeno Poopers, Buffalo Chicken Wings, Ribs Starter and Chicken Salad, which was full of beef and flavored with various spices. Food here is quite American. But many are not quite full with HK$ 100. Maybe it is because I used to eat in the mainland. If you had eaten in a restaurant in the mainland, none of the restaurants elsewhere would seem having serve enough for you. In addition, the atmosphere there is quite good. It is slightly dark. Overall, the service and quality of the food is a nice change for Western restaurants in HK. If you wish to try truly western style food, this is a good place.

Yummy American Food ... Smile Apr 14, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Heard of this place for a long while through some other friends but never really paid a visit there. Finally, was getting something done in Ma On Shan, after that, my friend and I decided to go there for dinner.

I was told that the portions here are pretty HUGE in size therefore, we can't be greedy, we can only order 1 appetizer (Onion Rings) and 2 main courses (1/2 slack of ribs and a burger). I actually love the basket of warm peanuts they are serving once you seated. Since we were here randomly, I haven't brought along my camera.. so.. no pictures here... smile

The owner/chef, Anthony, giving us 2 slices of carrot cakes... I have to say, they are the best carrot cakes i have ever had.. I love carrot cakes... theirs are so SOFT and MOIST... YUM... The ribs were perfectly made too... they are not hard, not too soft.. and still very juicy.. best ribs i have ever had.. The burger was good too but not TERRIFIC... why? the piece of meat, the salad.. everything were good.. except the bread was a little bit wet.. hehee.. Yes, I am picky with food.. and yes.. I love American Food..... Oh yes, their fries were skinny fries, hot and crispy while they arrived the table!!! We have a chat with Anthony, and I told him I really missed American breakfast ... He shown me pictures he has taken for their American breakfast... OK.. I will be back for that...

I was also being told that their brownies and cheesecake are very good too... However, too full already last nite, have to come back next time for other dishes...

For those people who miss texa's style meat.. good American food ... you MUST come here.. Forget about Dxx Rxxx... Rxbx Txxxdxx..... Food here taste better, you can tell food is made to order not pre-cooked.. very nice and friendly staffs...

Nice evening anyway.. should go back on weekends when they have bands playing there.. smile

We took a Sunday evening out with the 2 kids to go and visit this place. Started with a bit of a problem as the youngest was only 2 months old so after walking there with a pushchair we found no seats available downstairs.

However we dragged everything upstairs (actually would have been nice to have had a little help carrying 2 young kids and a pushchair and all the assorted paraphernalia that goes with that).

Service once seated was pretty good, although sometimes we had to wait several minutes for someone to come, they seemed more interested in the downstairs. We ordered the full platter which was huge and easily fed us all - in fact was too much. But wanted to give it a go. Meats cooked beautifully and certainly went down well. We had the heated peanuts while waiting and a nice cold beer (well I did and the wife had something fruity).

Once finished it took quite a while for someone to come up so we could pay the bill, again a pain with 2 youngsters and again we had to drag everything downstairs again with no help.

So overall a good experience, unfortunately they need to be a bit more customer focused but this is a place to recommend.

*Since i am a Saikung er - No Photos*

Quite an interesting restaurant on the corner, the waitors are dressed in cowboy clothing with cowboy boots,
The peanuts in the tin holder were warm too!!!!

Anyway wasnt hungry, just wanted to try something, so got the crabcakes, white crabmeat inside the golden breadcrumbs.
I didnt like the sauce much though, just sweet chili sauce, I would have preferred a wedge of lemon.
