I went there for a dinner with a friends from out of town with hopes of bringing them to a traditional cha chang tang (milk tea restaurant). After recommendations from friends, we visited Mido for dinner.

GOOD POINTS:
- The ambiance is really nice. If you get a window seat, you really feel like you're in 1960s Hong Kong. A lot of old Hong Kong is preserved at the restaurant including an old school cash register, old fans, and even tam goons (spitting buckets).
- Deep fried wonton with sweet and sour sauce was quite good. The wontons were quite big and the dipping sauce with fresh pineapples, peppers and onions, is the right portion of sweet and sour.

POINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT:
- The hygiene is scary. If you make a trip down to the toilet, pots of sauce (one of which I recognized is a sauce from the pork chop rice which we had for dinner) is sitting on the floor next to the toilet. Although you would expect the same from any cha chang tangs or restaurants, it's better if they keep that inside the kitchen so that patrons don't have to see it.
- We tried a lot of dishes, apart from the deep fried wontons, I have to say most of it was average. Here are some of the dishes:
* The highly recommended baked pork chop rice was just average. The sauce was good, however it isn't really a dish which I will go back to Yau Ma Tei especially to eat it.
* Curry chicken- Tsui Wah is better actually
* Jam and butter toast- The toast was not hot, so the butter didn't even melt
* Fried spaghetti with beef- I love all pasta and in all cuisines. However this one was very dry. The beef was quite good though and tender

SUGGESTIONS:
- The best place to sit is on the 2/Floor booth window seat for a party of 4 or less.
- Deep fried wontons and french toast are must-trys

I had lunch with five of my friends here and i ordered a 焗豬扒飯。。 to be frank, the quality of the dishes is just acceptable (actually it is not quite worth of it when the price is taken into consideration...) , the quantity is probably enough for a girl but absolutely not enough for an ordinary man like me, haha.

We assumd that in this kind of Cha Chan Tang the waiters would like to build a friendly and long lasting relationship with their customers but to our astonishment, they were so rude to us when one of my friends asked them if she could change her order...(i dont know..maybe they were too busy and under great stress...)

One of the waiters even talked to a foreign customer and said my friend had 公主病 (translated by my chinese friend) and acted like a princess --. Though, the environment and atmosphere is quite nice here and we can see some people chatting and having fun here.. so I recommend u to go there only when u want to spend an afternoon chatting leisurely with ur friends...for the service and the quality of food.. it was really fall short of our expectation..

The air con is crazily strong which make my wife sick and unwell, yet the shop manager/owner sucks and did not allow to change to other seat claiming which is their "policy". I request to leave. Yet this staff there restaurant needs us to pay all (including those two dishes not yet come). (Only two drinks arrived at that time) bullied by them, i was forced to pay something which never been made and served with extremely poor attitude. I have never been a restaurant with such a rude attitude.

Dining at the Mido cafe is a fun experience, but not one for top quality food or service.

The atmosphere does have the 50s vibe that the guide books enthuse about, the brown patterned tiles, wooden booth seating and green metal window frames do retain a vintage charm. This charm however extends down to the very dirty window frames and grotty laminated menus which may put some people off dining here. Walking in does feel a little like going back in time (English readers imagine some of the unchanged greasy spoon cafes that linger around the country and you're there) yet in the area in which it is situated surrounded by the outdoor dining of Temple Street the feeling is not as remarkable as I hoped.

We were seated immediatly at a central table but the waiter moved us almost instantly to a booth by the window as one became free. Its a lovely spot to sit and people watch as the hustle of the night market plays out below.

We ordered the pork with fried noodles, fried vegtables, sweet and sour pork ribs and rice. The food was all pleasant, the noodles nice and crispy and the quality of the meat was good. The vegtables were fresh and the ribs consisted of a lot of meat and not too much bone. Portions are generous and everything tasted nice. It is however nothing that you wouldn't find in any of the other small resturants around the area and across Hong Kong.

Service was alright but rather slow and we struggled to catch the waiter when we wanted to order.

Overal the experience is fun and one that is worth a try, however don't expect the food or the service to be anything special.

A favorite of photographers, directors and nostalgia seekers, Mido Cafe is a charming throwback to the '50s cha chaan tengs of Hong Kong. Heavy on the retro touches like colorful mosaic tiles and the old-fashioned cash register, it's not hard to see why Mido is listed in almost every HK guidebook as an introduction to the unique Chinese diner culture here.

For the uninitiated, Mido's specialty is the Baked Pork Chop (or Spare Ribs) Rice. Essentially, it's a bottom layer of egg fried rice, topped with the meat of your choice, smothered in a tomato-esque sauce, then baked. We also ordered fried "hor fun" (flat rice noodles) with sliced fish, as well as a claypot mixed vegetable dish with beancurd sheets, leafy greens and beansprouts. The veggies were lovely and light, and the noodles were quite scrummy. However, the baked spare ribs rice was a bit of a let down. It wasn't bad, but I suppose for all the hype, I was hoping for something different that would set it apart from all the other baked rice dishes available elsewhere. Sadly, it was rather average...I found the rice quite bland even with the tomato sauce.

Overall, it's just like any cha chaan teng in Hong Kong, except with better decor and higher prices. I won't be in a hurry to go back.

Ever since having the 焗排骨飯 (baked pork chop with fried rice) at 大家樂 (cafe de coral) - one of scrummiest things i've ever had - it quickly became one of my favourite dishes and since then; many people have told me I must try it at Mido Cafe

Ordered the beef curry and baked pork chop rice, one cold lemon tea and one hot lemon honey

The drinks arrived first, and the lemon honey tasted like lemon water...BUT i figured nevermind...i'm here for the novelty..and this place is famous for the food...not the drinks...

Then..after 15 minutes, the dishes came and the curry wasn't bad - however, nothing you can't get anywhere else. However, it all came down to the baked pork chop rice and after all the build up...the rice turned out to be...bland...and nothing to really write home about..
Sad to say it was a bit of a disappointment...If you want good pork chop rice..you'd be better off going to Cafe de Coral

Because I went here so long ago, I don't really remember any details, except for the fact that the food was very delicious and that the surroundings were very vintage and unique.

I also remember that there was a sign saying ''NO PHOTOGRAPHY PLEASE'' but everyone was sitting at their tables taking photographs, so I guess that rule has been ignored...

I ordered a pork chop rice, milk tea and a ''pineapple bun'' (the literal translation of bor lor bao) and they were really delicious, in particular the pork chop rice. Apparently there is a ''secret recipe'' for the sauce which makes it taste so good- it's very creamy with a hint of tomatoes and onions.

The meal cost around HK$40-50 in total which I guess is an okay price.

At G/F, you can see the cleaning lady do not clean those used glass (茶杯) from previous guests thoroughly, she just put the used glass into a bucket of water (not detergent) and that's all, take them out and let them dry on a wire mesh bucket, then re-fill those "washed glass" with tea for another round of new guest.

Horrible, especially during the current "flu" peak season.

Food is ok, but will never go again.

Breakfast: $23. Ham macaroni, toast and tea. No egg!

Ham is the cheapest kind. Soup is MSG soup. Milk tea is tasteless!

I mean, as a heritage place, you can charge more, but at least you give some reasonable food. For $23, any place will throw in one or two fried eggs.

2/F is closed and I saw some blonde model go up there, and a white woman came down with a EOS1 and shooted around. I also brought a camera, so is another table.

But if these tourists tried their food and thought our tea restaurant culture is that crap, it is a very bad impression. Shame on this restaurant as a tourist spot for this brilliant culture of HK.

Mido Cafe - what's a wonderful dinning experience of Hong Kong. First of all, you'll just love the open view from the 1st floor, the tile wall & the timeless deco. The house speciality - baked spare ribs with fried rice was tasty and really worth for waiting. Don't miss the crispy fried wonton with sweet & sour sauce (Kam Lo Wonton). If you still have room for dessert, try their french toast & the iced red bean & lotus (Yuan-Yeung Bing)! This is the real Hong Kong experience - surly a great taste and good deal of the city.
