Cool looking place with not bad service. Things went downhill when the waiter pushed the specials and pushed and pushed some more. The food was “ok” at best .Sushi plate (looked like a 5 year old put it together) .Salad was wet and old lettuce .Tofu tested like sawdust Asked for the chicken the waiter said :”yes I know” at that moment I should have asked the price (my own fault). Got the bill and the chicken was the most expensive thing on the bill, checked the menu and only 3 items in the restaurant were more expensive. Totally taken advantage will never go back! Hi Everyone A few days ago, I want to have reservation on Japanese restaurant to hold family day. I accept my friend recommendation to have dinner on Hachiouji. I have surprise the taste of food and beverage, the service of employee and the decoration and cleanness of restaurant.
In the beginning, the supervior or manager recommend the French oyster and Canada sea urchin. I ask him the oyster is fresh or not? Because I have taste not fresh oyster on the hotel before, the taste is vomit. He tell me this is fresh, taste cream and add little of lemon sauce, the taste is perfect. The tasting of oyster is very well and I have order two more
Finally, we taste the fried rice with asparagus & wagyuniku. They are use stone to keep rice warm and wet. Also we order dessert of sesame and tofu ice cream. We are enjoying the meal and service of this restaurant very well. I will recommend this restaurant to my friend and come back again Recommended Dish(es):

服務好,裝修有特色但位較窄。 晚市食物很一般。 除生啤抵飲外,價錢偏貴。 Retro & fun decoration but average food quality. >>> Retro Izakaya: The first time we were here was almost two years ago. It had a very interesting "retro" Japanese feel to it. Basically, the whole shop was decorated with stuff from the Showa Period [1925 - 1989]. I later know it's also part of the same group as "Ramen Kureka". We were attracted by the decor at first. However, we couldn't remember the theme of the restaurant. So almost two years later, after my wife finished some business around the area, we decided to try it again. There was a new sign board above the shop which said "Retro Izakaya". So at least that's a relatively useful indication. Read the signboards and "subtitles". It usually contains useful information, especially in Japanese restaurants - not all Japanese restaurants specializes in sushi, sashimi, tempura or yakitori. Some are primarily drinking places which served a bit of food, i.e. "Izakayas". Somewhat like the snacks provided in a Western bar. This place was one of those.
昭和時代裝修有特色 好像和拉麵來同一集團.
The table was very slippery and easy to shift backwards and forwards as well. This was quite inconvenient and slightly dangerous. I suggest the restaurant put some rubber stoppers at the legs of their tables. Even if you manage to secure a table for four, don't think you're safe. To my utter surprise, they do the cha chaan teng style of letting other customers sit at your table!
環境比榮川更擠迫. 有類似搭抬情況出現.
To make things worse, there was a table behind us, Hong Kongers plus Mandarine speakers. There was one Hong Kong middle-aged guy decided that he had to sprinkle his loud conversations with swear words in three different languages, Cantonese, Putonghua and English. This was probably done to show his masculinity in front of his friends from abroad. Or that he was simply a bit high on his draught Asahi. If you can't hold your drink, don't drink! Making a fool out of oneself is fine as long as you don't do it in public. If there is one thing that'd ruin my dining experience immediately, it's people who swears in a restaurant. I swear, a lot (mentally, especially at work
So the solution to the problem is, as always, a beer. We ordered two draught Asahi. There's a good promotion by the way. The kind waiter reminded us that they had beer promotions. Two large pints for $80. Otherwise, the normal price was $50 for a large pint and $35 for a small pint. Thanks a lot for the reminder! Talking about the service, all the waiters were very good. Efficient and polite. The manager was quite highly strung but still trying to keep everthing under control. Good points for the service.
First came the "Ankimo", which is monkfish liver marinated in salt and sake, with veins picked up, then rolled up and steamed. It's usually served with ponzu sauce and konbu. It's a cold delicacy. It was slightly dry at certain parts and the quality wasn't as good as those I've tried at "Ginza Okura" but still much better than "Ihashi". (I only knew this was one of the seafood dishes to avoid because of unsustainable fishing practices after checking Wiki. Perhaps I'll stop ordering this then. There are plenty of other delicious dishes to order anyway):
鮟康魚肝.OK
Then came the "Natto Ika", which means natto with squid. It is usually served with wasabi and soy sauce, which wasn't provided to us before we specifically asked for it. It's strange to see Natto Ika served on a bed of konbu (which was a bit dried and tasteless) and some type of fern (the purple leaves) which is usually used in kaiseki ryori or served with sashimi:
This was definitely small for the price - $55. The quality of the natto was fine (if a bit small). The cuttlefish was quite fresh. If I remember correctly, you could order the same dish at the same price but almost triple the size and with much better quality for the natto and ika at the Izakaya nearby, "Kyozasa" 京笹 . Kyozasa is not as "retro" but the quality of seafood and other delicacies are generally quite good. The chicken tsukune (minced chicken pattie) looked interesting:
很一般的雞肉軟骨串.肉硬,不香.蛋無味.
HK$48. Showa Jidai quality: You generally wouldn't expect proper restaurant quality food at bars and pubs (other than the gastropubs). I understand the same idea applies to Izakayas. Traditionally, it's primarily a drinking place that served some snack to accompany your sake, sochu or beer. Customers won't expect very high quality food (then again, the food standard in Japan are usually not that bad anyway). Yakitori is a simple type of cuisine that doesn't require a lot of space to process so it's very popular in Izakayas. This is why I say this place is a very authentic retro Izakaya - when it comes to food quality...... We over heard the two Japanese customers next to us saying "Oishii (delicious)" after they had the sashimi. The finished it. In view of that, we were a bit interested to try out the sashimi so we had a look at the menu again. They had quite a lot of sushi and sashimi to choose from. They have a few types of assorted sashimis, "Hachiouji sashimi moriawase" (about 10 different types of sashimi), "Showa sashimi moriawase" - 8 types and "Jidai sashimi moriawase" (5 types - $168) We ordered the "Jidai" set:
Shell fish x2 weren't too bad but not cold enough. The two shrimps were acceptable but not cold enough as well. Salmon x 3 were the best, but too oily for my wife. Hamachi x 3 were not too bad but definitely very standard quality. However, the maguro was bad. Not fresh at all and a bit soggy. It barely had any fish taste. Not recommended. Bad maguro:
Even "Q" thinks the quality of the maguro was shocking:
Then came the nanban chicken:
南蠻炸雞.淋,有雞味但好像用水煲過後才炸的.不香口.
We we first took a bite, it was surprisinly soft! I hope they didn't boil the chicken first before frying it - it certainly seemed a bit like it. The chicken meat was not too bad as it had some chicken taste. I'd suggest that they put the mayo sauce separately and it was a bit overwhelming. Not comparable to those at Hakata Dojo. The namban fired chicken at Hakata Dojo 博多道場 were consistently juicy, tender and the batters were very crispy yet not too oily. (By the way, the food quality of the CWB branch is more consistent than the TST branch and they serve great lunch sets at reasonable price too.) If I remember correctly, the yakitoris here weren't anything spectacular but OK. Meitaigo with fried tofu:
The fried tofu was quite good. It had a good soy bean taste to it. The texture was nice - on the firm side but not overcooked. ($58) This turns out to be the best dishes of the evening. ____ Conclusion: - Very crowded at night. Only acceptable if you get a box seat. - Good service and interesting retro decor. - Sashimi is not recommended. - Generally a bit pricey. - Draught Asahi Beer at reasonable price. - The sochu was also reasonable. - Good Ika but a bit pricey. - Meitaigo Tofu was good. I initially wanted to give this a "Crying" face. But on reflection, although some of the foodstuff, namely the sashimi set, was below average, my mood was probably significantly effected by the swearing middle-aged guy and the noise. So if you're just here for a quick beer/ sochu, a little bit of snack and childhood memories, it might not be too bad. But if I'm at Ashley Road, I prefer Kyozasa, Weinstube or Castro's. In this regard, there is a very dangerous "ear-worm" which I've wanted to show you for a long time but couldn't find the appropriate restaurant to do so. The restaurant was very Japanese-like, something that you would expect yourself to find in Japan. The decorations in the restaurant were nicely presented with colourful ancient Japanese posters and fancy portraits and items such as bottles of wine and beer. As we sat ourselves down, we heard a table of Japanese drinking and laughing loudly. I thought, the food being served in this Japanese restaurant must be of a good and high standard. Yet, I was wrong.
MENU
As we flipped through the MENU, we were caught in wonder as to what to choose out of dozens. The MENU was very colourful and thoughtful in illustrating the best of all kinds. It took us a while to pick what we wanted; due to my sudden eager of sushi, we ordered Special Sushi set (特選壽司盛合), Eel with cheese roll (鰻魚芝士卷) and Grilled Pork with Kimchi served in a stone pot (石窩燒豚肉泡菜) + Rice.

A random interlude occured at the middle of our meal: an angry couple was next to us arguing all along, not only on personal matters but also the fact that the ramen they ordered was wrong and the girl seemed to be extremly mad about it.. since the tables were so close to each other at this restaurant, we felt as though this couple was arguing right in our ears..it was quite a scene to 'hear' .. lasted for like..an hour? Great.... Last but not least, something I have to mention, our bill cost us HKD$192 per person. Seriously over-priced with these over-rated food as shown in Openrice!! Goodbye, the 'eighth-prince'. The restaurant has a ground floor and a basement floor. We were seated in the basement which was small and near the kitchen. You can see the wet kitchen floor and immediately it was a turn off. We had arrived and so gave it the benefit of the doubt. The food was typical sashimi and sushi. We also had tempura. It was an average taste with some of the fish having a poor texture since it was frozen during some stage of the chilling process. Other than that, if you don't mind waitors wallking briskly in and out of the kitchen with wet feet, then I guess you could find it ok. Come time for the bill and the waitress will show you teh correct billing amount on their receipt. Then she will present you with your credt card slip but it have $30 EXTRA ON IT. CHECK YOUR BILL CAREFULLY. I will not go back as I feel it may well have been on purpose. Table Wait Time: 5 minute(s)

When I stepped into this restaurant called “Hachiouji”, I was truly excited. The interior design of the whole place is just fascinating. The whole place is decorated with cool Japanese old movie posters and old Japanese toys. We couldn’t help but keep taking pictures of the posters and the toys. However, the cool decoration will only keep you busy for awhile. After all, we are going there for food. And I have to say the food in this restaurant is just so-so. They are not bad, but they are just okay. The skewers taste alright, but you don’t say they are very delicious. The udon is also only mediocre. Among the dishes that we ordered, I think one dish that sort of stood out. This dish is “Roasted garlic”. My friend and I are both big fans of garlic, and therefore, we were both really excited to try this dish. The dish turned out to taste a bit different from what we expected. The garlic being used in this dish is quite different from those we got from the market. Instead of having a very strong garlic taste, it only carries a very light taste. And when it comes to texture, the garlic they use is actually quite crunchy. They were served with miso paste, which I find matches quite well with the garlic taste (something that I might try cooking at home). So if you are also a garlic lover, I do recommend you to try this dish out. Other Ratings: Taste 3 | Environment 4 | Service 4 | Hygiene 4 | Value for Money 3

呀米AK (Non-member) | Have causal dinner with 3 other friends. Order Assorted Sushimi, Assorted Grilled, Egg roll, Calm in wine soup, salted fish head and large bottle of Japanese Wine. Just got back to San Francisco. Great visiting HK. Always nice to see the family! Every time I visit HK, eating Japanese food is the NUMBER ONE priority for me. Why? Because Japanese food in San Francisco is plain weak! Unfortunately, I could only hit one Japanese restaurant during this stay in HK. But hey... It was very good. Dinning out means calling the usual suspects from my HK clicks-Zero, Alyssa, and Enya. So when Zero suggested we should try this place at T.S.T., I said "What? A La Carte style, HELL NO!!!" I always hated little dishes of food. But Zero was persistent so I went along.... I told Zero if the place sucks, he is buying my dinner. Got to the Hachiouji around 7 pm. Minor wait and was seated under 10 mins. Nice deco inside/outside. Old school style Japanese restaurant. Someone actually thought about the looks/details of this place. Nice effort. Ok, bring on the foods. I am hungry. We ordered the following dishes... Fried Rice with Eel ($68), Fried Udon with Urchin Sauce ($78), Grilled Hokke Fish ($75), Grilled Ox Tongue Skew ($22), Lychee Pork Roll Skew ($18), and Salmon+Yellow Tail+Sea Urchin Sushi ($28/$38/$62). We ordered some house specialty drinks but I freakin forgot their names! Both skewers items were very good. The ox tongue was tender and juice. Same for the pork roll. Skewered food can be tough if left on the grill too long. Nice timing from the kitchen. Sushi were excellent. The fishes and sea urchin tasted fresh. The Sea Urchin had that perfect raw "organic salty" taste. It really hits the spot! The grilled Hokke fish was a surprise. I thought that it would be the weakest dish on the order. I was wrong. It turned out too be tasty and flavourful. Not overcook or undercook. The Eel fired rice and Urchin udon round out the dinner. Both dishes are nicely prep. The girls thought the Sea Urchin udon was a tad salty. But I found the taste just about right. Service at Hochiouji was proper. The servers were friendly and efficient. No "black faces." What about the restroom? I didn't use the ladies room During dinner, the restaurant owner (with a really bad hair style Well, I am impress with this place. I was in such a good mood after eating I pick up the tab on the dinner. I even gave Zero his kudos for picking this place. He just laugh and said, "Pity the fool who doesn't want to try something different." He is right.

Forgive me that this is my first review We were walking around Habour City, Canton Road, all the usual places for window shopping. We stumbled upon Ashley Road , which all of us haven't been here for quite awhile. We never noticed, but there were a few Japanese Restaurant in this little street What caught our eyes was this place called Hachiouji (八王子), the decoration was simply amazing, which took us back into the old days of Japan. It was really cool The place looks even more amazing from the inside, they got these vintage movie poster which look authentic. I collect vintage clothes and a vintage stuff nut. I went to talk to the owner and he told me he collected his posters, tin plates, movie items for a long long time from japan Well, the place looks good but what about the food you might ask! We ordered a few items recommended by their cute waitresses and a huge bottle of SAKE!!! My buddy Tony took some photos of what we ordered that night and thanks to him I can now post them up here. Overall, i have to say that the restaurant made us feel us we went back to japan again, but in a time machine.

I have been to there twice. The first time I went was in mid of December 2008. The second time was last night (Mar 2009). In the first time, when I get into the restaurant, I found that the layout of the restaurant is good, on the left side, there was a number of 4 seats (with back pad) grouped table; On the right side, there was a long bench with several separated tables and non-back packed seats. At that time, the shop was about 60% full, most of the 4 seats grouped tables were empty. Then I asked the staff if we could sit in there, they said no, because all the seats were being reserved. I think that's fine, may be they have reserved for some VIPs... So I went to another restaurant on the same street. After finishing the meal (1 hour later), I went back to 八王子 to double check if those seats are still empty or not. The result is.... empty. Well, the conclusion after the first visit is, they prefer people to reserve the seats before visiting, no walk-ins will be entertained, sorry. Last night, me and my girl friend wanted to eat Japanese style dinner, and we were in TST, so we re-visit 八王子 again. After sitting down, we made ordered, we ordered two dishes of sushi, and one dish of 炒烏東. About the service, I think it's fine, they have 6 staffs in the shop, which I think is more than enough for last night, and that's one of the reasons that they could serve us promptly. About the food, one word, TOO SALTY. I don't know why they can make such a salty food. The sushi are too small (only half size of those in the chain-store sushi restaurants), the 烏東 is full of oil in the dish. And I can't taste what's inside the dish, I can only see some leaves of vegetables, but there's no any other taste except salty taste. At last, it cost $200 for this salty dinner. Banker Wong (Non-member) | Last Saturday, I, together with some friends of mine, had dinner at Hachiouji. The interior design and decoration were really impressive and made us feel like we were in Japan. We ordered toro sashimi, [a white fish] sashimi, salmon skin roll, wagyu beef and kimchi roll, Japanese tomato salad, green salad, grilled chicken wings, grilled pork and lychees, grilled rice balls, fried rice with uni, etc. Quality was well above average. Most importantly, the taste and ingredients were traditional Japanese style (not the so-called modern or HK-style Japanese). My friends particularly liked the grilled food which matched very well with Sake. Even it's grilled food, the ingredients used were definitely not low quality frozen food. The sashimi are fresh, far better than those sold at those popular sushi restaurant group. Service quality is also good. The waiters and waitresses frequently refilled our tea and renewed our plates. Some of them can speak Japanese and we saw a number of tables occupied by Japanese. That's a signal of good quality of food otherwise it won't attract the Japanese. After this dinner, My friends and I had put Hachiouji on our list of favorite dine out and gathering places. Situated in the busy district of TST on Ashley Road, with so many restaurants nearby, I think the main draw of this place is definitely the "Jap" style decorations and music - gives a unique and rather authentic feel to the place, Food is ok but not terribly exciting. 芝士酒盜 is a dish with special salty flavour which I suppose may not suit everyone's taste. Fried dumplings were ok. Deep fried octopus "mouth part" is quite good. The 鮟康魚肝is very nice indeed - this is the first time I have tried it and I will definitely try it again later ! Overall, the dinner is reasonable. Food portion is a bit on the small side. I think the overall quality is similar (or slightly better) than 和民. Price is certainly on the higher end. We might come back later to try other stuff, but maybe not in the near future. Recommended Dish(es):
