Lunch with a friend Smile Nov 24, 2011

    lol

My friend wanted to have something spicy and since I had eaten here before, I thought we should give it a try again!

The waiters were most friendly and we went to get some food rightaway! There were the usual chicken, lamb and veggies. I was a bit surprised that there was no beef brisket as I love my curry beef brisket. The curry lamb was quite tasty and the curry chicken was pretty good too as the sauce of both were pretty well made, going very well with the rice. The fried chicken wasn't so good, it was just average if not slightly over-cooked!

Since it was not too busy, I was able to enjoy a decent conversation with my friend while having some great food.

In the end, we ordered some hot coffee and to my surprise, the coffee was actually pretty damn good too.

All in all, a rather pleasant meal once again and definitely one I will be visiting again in the near future.

On a rainy day....... Smile Aug 10, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
It was a such a miserable day at lunch time, pouring cats and dogs outside so we decided to go somewhere close to the office.

As I was soaking wet from outdoors and walking into a air conditioned restaurant and being seated right under the a/c I asked the waitress politely if she could just turn down the a/c fan a little bit as it was going on full blast and was quite cold. She smiled and said no problem, but she turned the a/c off completely!!!!! Hahahaha!!!! It was fine for me and my mate as we were wet and the other a/c's were on full blast in the restaurant.

IMO, this is the best Indian restaurant in Wanchai area. It's very clean and there's not a lot of fancy decor and not too cluttered meaning you have ample space between the tables so you don't feel crowded and feel like the neighbors are listening to your conversation.

The buffet lunch is fantastic, only $88 per head including a soft drink. The buffet (as far as I can remember) had the following:

    Yogurt dip
    Mint dip
    Carrot & cucumber salad
    Lettuce & tomato salad
    Fruit salad
    White rice
    Saffron rice
    Vegetable Curry
    Lamb curry
    Chicken Tikka
    Vegetable Samosa
Stir fried Chinese broccoli with garlic
    Pampadom
    Fish

And I'm sure they had a few more dishes, but I can't remember, sorry. There is also some onion naan for your table.

All in all, very tasty and quite nice if you want to sit and chat because it's not too noisy.

I love Wanchai, there is endless choice of restaurant and variety of cuisines. I've had some good luck and some bad ones X_X but this one is high on my list!!

As soon as you open the door, you need to climb a flight of stairs. The stairs are not so well-maintained (it's clean just not impressive or pristine). You can tell the carpeted stairs is a bit worn down but I actually like this old-school feeling.

The main color is orange-ish/brown. It's not an easy color to use, but somehow with the pictures, lighting and the brick wall (w/ windows you can see through the kitchen), I find it quite harmonious smile

There are so many sections on the menu – Himalayan style, Indian style, BBQ, curry, vegetarian etc … the list is exhaustive. We finally settled for 5 dishes:

1)Chickpea salad – the main ingredients like chickpeas, tomatoes, potatoes and cucumber are fresh and sweet. The dressing is a brownish-red sweet and sour sauce. It is one of the best “specialty” dishes I’ve ever tried smile

2)Indian style smashed spinach with cheese – GOOD! The taste and the consistency are just right. No complain.
3)Khasi ko Masu (boneless mutton in Himalayan style curry) – The sauce is perfect, just the right kind of spice and hotness. The sauce is of the right consistency, not being weighed down by cream or coconut milk. The mutton was a bit chewy but was good enough, it’s the sauce I’m going after lollollol
4)Onion naan – freshly made naan seasoned with the sweetness from the onion. This one is almost perfect. lol
5)Indian Yellow Rice – it’s not the typical “yellow color” rice. It’s a blend of pilaf rice, yellow-colored rice, spices, mushroom and some saffron. It tasted good, but we were doubting if they gave us the wrong rice (there are 2 kinds of rice on the order).

I also tried their banana lassi. It was a bit sweet, but the waiter added some plain lassi for me to dilute the sweetness. Hmmm… yummy

This delightful and satisfying dinner concluded my weekend lol

After a drink at the Pawn we saw this place across the road and decided to try it out. The decor attemps to give off a touch of authenticity without being over the top, with the main wall bearing a mural of the Himalayas that had markers on the peaks. There were some modern touches such as the bar with wine glasses hanging overhead, or a decanter for the wine.
    I like their water jugs

The toilet could be a little cleaner but overall functional without being too cramped. The service friendly and courteous, with the manager giving us useful tips on which food to order (and avoid). There were a few other diners around us, mostly couples or family/friends of 4, but the general atmosphere was quiet and relaxing with dim lightning that still allowed us to read the menu properly.
    We had a bottle of red which costed $170, then ordered 2 appetisers - the Piri Piri prawn (sizzling prawns on hot plate) and the Himala Aloo (spiced potato slices);
    Himala aloo
    Himala aloo

    Piri piri prawn
    Piri piri prawn

4 mains - chicken Makhani (creamy tomato and butter sauce), lamb sagwala (spinach sauce), fish vindaloo (hot but not overbearing, we were told most places in HK tone it down a bit or else they might get sued for burning off someone's tongue), and the spiced okra (very nicely done, just enough sauce to hold it together, and not too oily). Then we ordered 4 kinds of bread - garlic naan, spiced herb naan, aloo paratha, and a naan with lamb in it. All were very tasty, though a tad greasy, and I personally prefer them a bit fluffier, but these ones were flat and thin except for the rim. Then there was the pulao rice. Yes, it was a lot of carb, but the curry sauce was so good we mopped it all up.

Overall the food tasted great, with each dish giving off its own flavour (sometimes Indian curry can all taste a bit the same if they use a pre-made base). The meat was tender though the lamb lacked taste, perhaps the spinach was too mild compared with the vindaloo. And the dishes were very reasonably priced - $30-50 for appetisers, $60-90 for mains, breads at $16-24, and I didn't see any dish going over the $98 mark. The only thing I would say about the menu was that it had too many options, with all sections divided into Nepalese Special! and Indian Special!, it was just a bit too much reading material to go through. Other things I saw that I liked but didn't get to try were the momos and the mulligatawny soup, which not many Indian/Nepalese restaurants serve in HK.
The manager gave us 10% off, so essentially we didn't pay any service charge, but left a tip, which is how it should be.

This is my first time trying Indian and Nepalese dish at a restaurant.
The food is good and delicious.

The restaurant is clean and tidy. With bright lighting, it is a good place for dining with friends or having gathering.

The service is nice. The waiters and waitresses are polite and they serve drinks to us efficiently.

We went there as a group and enjoy the dish there in buffet style. The Naan bread is really good! In addition, the fish, chicken and lamb tastes wonderful as well with the speical sauce on it.

We have good time there lol

We had a gathering there. A buffet dinner. I guess we reached a little bit earlier.

The food came. Mango Lassi - sure it should be up to standard with rich mango favor and rich texture. Yet it is more like mango juice more ... maybe I had a super mango lassi in sg that I cannot compare with.

For those who are expecting some complete Indian tastes, might get a bit surprise with some fine Nepalese taste. The food was really tasty, and I experienced the same surprise with a different Nepalese taste.

The service was very good indeed. All the staff were polite, considerate and attentive.

Overall the price is a bit higher then usual indian restaurants in hong kong. But I guess it is not that intense for a fine place like Himalaya.

It has been the second time I dined in Himalaya Restaurant. Unlike last time, I have been to there with a horde of friends.
It would be a fabulous choice to opt for this restaurant if you would like to chat with friends with a relaxed environment.
Veg samosa is crispy which can attract you to eat more, although it can make you full easily because of nature of ingredient, e.g. potatos, onions. It seems it is one of the most popular food in the restaurant that tray for samosa has to been always refilled.

Naan, which is always the Indian food we eat after appetiser, is fresh.
Don't be afraid if you are a bit scared of spicy food because spiciness isn't as much as you imagine here and it can be alleviated when waiter serves you by refilling water efficiently all the time, with smile.

Remember to order Mango lassi here, really divine!

This is a Indian restaurant. Its environment is just so-so, both exterior and interior, not as magnificent as I thought. The lighting is a little bit dark, but the atmosphere is pretty good, very exotic. The music is also very special and nice. And most of the waiters and waitress are Indian, and they're very friendly.

The food is pretty good. What impresses me most is the Mango Lassi. It tastes rich and fresh, a bit like milkshake. And the curry is also fantastic, a liitle spicy, but I like it. There was also a kind of pancake, which is very al dente .

Overall, the restaurant is pretty good, and the price is reasonable. I recommend you to have a try and feel the Indian style.

I have been to this restaurant several times. The food quality has been consistently high. The restaurant has been very quiet and there're not too many people around. Tonight I went by myself. I ordered the following dishes, in the mind that I would take some of them away for tmr lunch:

Aloo Chop Chop - a kind of not-so-deep fried potato cakes. The dish came with four pieces. There was a very small amount of ginger smashed in them. Very nice!

Paratha - hot and freshly made. The texture was good. In some other restaurants, it could be rather tough/hard.

Banana Larsi - I ordered mango larsi in this restaurant before. So I tried something alternative. This was quite special. But I decided larsi goes better with mango.

Mutton fried rice (I forgot its name as printed in the menu) - The mutton's juicy and tender. The rice's a bit spicy which suited my taste very well. The last time I came to this restaurant, I took away the left-over and stir-fried it the next day. It just tasted as good as in the restaurant. So I did the same thing tonight. I ate a bit, and took away the rest.

The restaurnat gave me two pieces of very fresh and nice papadam (crispy craker) free of charge. This's a practice they do to all customers. I appreciate it!

With a full stomach and a takeaway bag, I am a happy man!

Surely I will keep going to this restaurant.

Today is cold and damp so I think the best way to start working in the New Year is to have some Indian food. I therefore tried this restaurant today with my red pocket money.lol

In general I find their buffet acceptable. It is not the best (JxJx has better variety and more chunks of meat) but probably the cheapest in the area. I have tried the following food:

Samosa: Freshly made and authentic. The wrapping is thick (made of potato flour and not the wonton wrapping in other local curry house) and the vege filling piping hot. The size of each samosa is big too. Very fulfilling indeed.lolchopstick

Bean and vege soup: Very thick soup and slightly spicy. Good for cold weather like today.smile

Lamb salad: The lamb is not of good quality. It is not soft enough but the spicy taste is tentalising.smile

Chicken tikka: It is as good as in other Indian restaurants. The taste of charcoal broiled yoghurt is always appealing to me.lol

Indian sausage: It is soft and tasty (like tandoori). Delicious!lol

Curry lamb: I have to give it a cross as the lamb is not succulent, it is fat and not tasty. the curry sauce is also disappointing.sad

Long rice: Herbs are added so it tastes Indian.bowllol

Dessert: The ball in syrup is well made. The sponge ball has a good milky taste. Though this maybe too sweet to others.lolchopstick

Mesala tea (Indian herbal milk tea): Quite strong and delicious.lol

The services of the restaurant are also good.

smile hm hm hmmmmm~~~yum! After reading some good reviews here, I decided to try out the lunch buffet in Himalaya. It was an upstairs restaurant with nice decor. As many bloggers said, all the servers here are South Asian. I was greeted with a friendly smile as soon as I arrived.

Selection of food is pretty good.
Buffet price complimentary with a drink -- so I ordered a Mango Lassi and it was delicious. Creamy with mango flava.
Three types of curry with Chicken, fish and veggie.
Served with one garlic roti. Three kinds of rice.
Some veggie and salad. tomatoes were fresh and sweet.
Among all, BBQ chicken was my favorite!! It was juicy, tender and grilled with perfection. I couldn't stopping myself from getting so many more...hehe
My craving of Shish kebab was also satisified too!! smile
Dessert...was surprisingly tasty. It was a warm creamy dessert with almond slides. Not sure what's called but i like it.

Overall, food is valued for the price. $75x 15% discount + 10% service charge = $72 for lunch buffet. Very nice. Most impotantly, nice environment and great food. I will definitely come back again! smile

It was an upstair Indian restaurant.

The two of us had Mango Lassi, Butter Chicken, Grilled Lamb Tandoori and Basmati Rice. And there is a crispy appetizer too~ sounds not much, yet it turned out we both complete packed and had to take a taxi home.

    The crisp was not bad.

Mango Lassi - sure it should be up to standard with rich mango favor and rich texture. Yet it is more like mango juice more ... maybe I had a super mango lassi in sg that I cannot compare with.

Butter Chicken - the pot is actually full of tender chicken, the tomato chicken sauce is rich for the Basmati Rice. It is not that sweet and the tomato favor is strong too.

Grilled Lamb Tandoori- the dish is unexpectedly a large one. The meat might a bit over-cooked *to my standard* yet the spice is not bad.

When it comes to the bill, they provide us with the after dinner spice that refresh our mouth.

The overall pricing is very very reasonable with this quantity and standard.
