WE had Hanger Steak, 2 Seabass, all at HK$255+. Medium hanger steak was served raw with 2 decent potato croquette, and steak was topped with platic cheese. The fisk was a tiny blackened fillet halh on top of boiled bakchoy. Tasteless and awful dish that should have been sent back. As we are not accustomed to causing a scene nor taking photos, we just walked off irate and disgusted. Not to return unless one wants to relive the experience of low British pub food with good pub ambience. Decent expresso coffe and warm bread was the hightlight or an awful dining experience. The Pawn is quite the hidden gem- nestled along the busy roads of Wan Chai, one would not expect to find anything of this sort or calibre in its surroundings. For starters the building itself is quite a stunner, The Pawn has been refurbished to boast tasteful and hip interiors while conserving its traditional exteriors. If you have friends visiting town, this would be a perfect spot to take them out to dinner. There's a decent bar on the ground floor and a rooftop bar as well. There is a choice of indoor or outdoor dining, the current cool climate makes the latter an excellent choice! Once we were presented with the menu I was grinning from ear to ear, this was a very well thought out and appealing menu. I literally had to sit there struggling between the Oxtail Cottage Pie, Hanger Steak, Pork Rack and Pork Belly with Granny Smith Apples- I wanted to devour the entire menu. Starters: The sweetcorn soup was very nice, its consistency was perfect and every spoonful was packed with the poignant sweetness of sweetcorn.

I made a reservation here after reading that they have great fish and chips. I didn't realize that this place is really three restaurants, and the person who answered the phone didn't tell me that either. Maybe the downstairs bar area doesn't take reservations? Anyway, we wound up eating somewhat fancier fare in "The Dining Room." Here's what we got: We decided to go with beer rather than wine, and my heart sank when the server recited the beer list. "Tsingtao, Carlsberg,..." I didn't catch any British beers on the list at all (though I'll admit, even though the server repeated the list twice, I only understood about 2/3rds of what he said). I settled for a Leffe and my wife had a Stella. All in all, it was pretty good. I don't think I had enough of the food to rate the restaurant as a whole. I'd come back, but probably to the bar to get fish and chips. I will say that the price for the pie at $295 for what was ultimately 4 meals between the two of us was eminently reasonable. Everyone who knows me long enough can easily tell that I am an unapologizing Anglophile and a history enthusiast. The Pawn is a historical heritage site that encapsulates the splendor of the Old Hong Kong while serving good British food. Naturally I would not miss it, but for some reason I had not visited the place until that night... I am glad that the chef of the Pawn allowed us to try some of the best British dishes.
I am not a great fan of mutton, but that night I had a large piece of it. It was superbly tender and the fat between the fleshes melted in a tantalizing way. Its robust flavour allowed it to be served alone without the sticky red currant sauce. The side dishes, including Yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese, were very British. The pudding was even better than the one I had at Yorkshire Pudding. As for the cauliflower cheese, I would like to have a stronger cheese added.
I wondered what kind of traditional desserts (sticky toffee pudding? Banoffee pie?) the chef was going to serve. Instead of serving the common and popular British desserts, he offered Eton Mess, a creamy mixture of raspberry and toasted meringue. It is a traditional dish of Eton College that would be served after the annual cricket match against Winchester College. While I was not fortunate enough to study at that illustrious institution, I was lucky enough to have tried one here, although I am in no position to judge whether it was “authentic” or not (I guess only a handful of distinguished/notorious person in Hong Kong who actually tasted the real one can judge that). Anyway, unlike many British desserts, it was surprisingly light and refreshing. I particularly liked the idea of adding aromatic Thai basil to it, giving a twist to the tradition.

I liked the Rhug Estate sausage roll but think the pastry could be baked a bit more browned! There is also a J Forman smoked salmon sandwich. The Stilton Quiche and Walnuts tart was pretty good, except the pastry base was a little hard. But overall enjoyable. Thought the sandwiches had too thin a filling though - apparently the restaurant is improving on these .
2nd Flush was a lot better thanks. .
- Burnt Cambridge Cream Tart - one of my favourites on the day - Strawberries filled with Champagne Cheesecake - didn't like the very sour and tart balance of this, especially when the Strawberry is not sweet enough. - Sticky Toffee Pudding & Toffee Jelly - The shortening filled texture of this was quite accurate, but the toffee wasn't burnt enough and made it more too sugary. I think it also needed a real toffee sauce. - Malted Chocolate Cup Cake - the texture was perfect but it was kind of too sweet. .
.
.
I liked the clotted cream. The scones on my side were deemed decent but other tables thought it was a little too compressed dense to cut through. If I had one complaint, it was that the Raspberry Jam wasn't cooked enough to release it's deeper dark forest flavours .
No longer on the menu at The Living Room downstairs. Can they please bring it back? I used to adore it. .
Their Scotced egg used to have too little meat, but now it has improved. Loving it ! .
A Stout-soaked bread and now filled with a bit of ham and cheese was decent. It probably can do with more stout's taste. I miss my Welsh Rarebit in England and Australia. ****************************** I am really into British food. Call me biased. I will say this even though Britain abandoned us and gave us a dodgy BNO Passport to compensate (luckily I have an Aussie Passport sucked in!). I have high hopes of The Pawn and to satisfy our British cravings! Dining Offers: Tasting Event Other Ratings: Taste 3 | Environment 5 | Service 2 | Hygiene 4 | Value for Money 4

Picture this: high above the congested deafening traffic of Johnston Road you recline on deep leather sofas whilst sipping on a cigar-aged rum-infused Old Fashioned ($90). You’re Don Draper in 1880s Hong Kong, surrounded by colonial paraphernalia, exposed brick and faux vintage woodwork. The now-renovated heritage building is more “Shoreditch” than “old boozer” and after snacking on their extremely lucrative and delicious Scotch Eggs ($40) you’ll never want to leave. Anchored by head chef Anthony Fletcher who ensures only the freshest ingredients for this gastropub, we started with half a dozen Essex oysters ($120) which wet the appetite as did its fried oyster wrapped-in-bacon counterpart Devils-on-Horseback ($50) from the bar menu. We truly indulged on the mains opting for the slow cooked Berkshire Pork Belly ($195) which perfectly matched the acidity of the rhubarb puree including a side of peas and butter poached potato. We ended the meal with a classic cheese and oatcake plate ($85 per 2 pieces) sourced by British retailer Neal’s Yard Dairy. The extensive wine and spirits list ensures the perfect pairing for your meal. Their weekend brunch is delightful too, served every Saturday and Sunday 11am to 3pm. Share a full roast with all the trimmings on their veranda and take in what The New York Times calls Wanchai’s “nascent cultural” recovery, as well as the best Fish and Chips in Hong Kong. I had a nice brunch with the girls at The Pawn one Sunday. We sat at a table on the outdoor terrace, and it was simply blissful and serene under the sun. The Pawn is housed in a heritage building built in the late 1800’s/ early 1900’s on Johnston Road (opposite the Wan Chai Sports Ground), and the ground floor of the building used to be, as its name suggests, a pawn shop back in the days. The Pawn has been opened since 2008 and is run by the proprietors of The Press Room and Classified. (1) Kedgeree is a traditional British dish for breakfast from colonial India, and usually consists of cooked fish, rice, parsley, hard-boiled eggs and curry powder. My Kedgeree Risotto ($195) with smoked haddock, radishes and soft boiled egg was a touch too salty, but the risotto had a lovely consistency and a sensuous balance of spicy and smoky flavours.

Visited twice within a 10 day period, ate in the resturant once and the bar on the second visit. Food was very good on both occasions however it is the atmosphere in the lounge that really sets this place apart, its really very special. Food slightly overpriced but the staff and surroundings compensate for this. A definate favourite for me now which I'll visit a couple of times each trip to HK Recommended Dish(es):

The other night, my friends threw a birthday dinner party here! Heard that it was awesome. That's why I made a reservation here as well for my friend as well. We bought a cake... unfortunately, they charge over HKD$ 200 for a cake ! We didnt know that there was an elevator, so we took the stairs and walked up. The bar is on the 1/F. The environment and atmosphere was actually pretty nice. ( I think I will come back for a drink or so) We made the reservation, so we dont need to wait. Appetizers: Oysters Small Plates: Cauliflowers with cheese and Roasted Potatoes The Cauliflowers was okay, but i think i would prefer fries to roasted potatoes. The potatoes were plain. Main Courses: - Lamb Racks My friend tried them and they couldnt finish it. The serviing size was kinda of huge. - Steak The birthday boy tired it ! I like it,too ! The medium-well steak was juciy! - Roasted Chicken
the fish was okay, but i dont like the sour-ish veggies served with it. Otherwise, its good !

Have eaten at Pawn for dinner before - but this time, there was something different. They've got a new chef, a new menu, and it's MUCH better! It wasn't bad before, but not great. Menu choices: much more attractive and palatable. Actually had a hard time deciding, which makes me want to go back Presentation: Plating has improved a lot, looks nicer and matches the price point Taste: scallop appetizers - awesome. Pork belly - really juicy meat, crispy skin, well seasoned; good size. Quail - tender, light and flavorful. Cabbage + bacon side - yum. Buttered mash - yum yum. Only ding - the sticky toffee pudding dessert was a bit burnt and dried out from overcooking. The new chef even came out to talk to us and ask us about the food. Affable british dude. Went there for my 40th with my gf at around 630pm to avoid the rush and timing was good because it wasn't too busy. We started off with half a dozen of their lovely Scottish Rock oysters. Afterwards we decided to both have the foie gras parfait which tasted very nice but unfortunately it was much too heavy and I think the portion size definitely should of been shrunken down a bit. For main courses I had the Canadian New York steak which is cooked perfect medium rare. Normally it comes with roasted tomato, chips and a peppercorn sauce but I'm quite a fussy eater and I requested mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and the sauce on the side which they gladly did for me with no extra charge!!! My partner had the proscuitto wrapped salmon but instead of having the normal salad with artichokes she changed her sides to mash and spinach. Both of our main courses were very very good, no complaints what so ever. The service was splendid throughout the night. Servers were very attentive and always came to our needs. Nothing had to be asked twice and they made sure we had a nice time. I'm not much of a dessert fan but my missus is so she ordered the fresh strawberries with clotted cream and shortcake for us. To my surprise they wrote happy birthday on my plate for me in Chocolate, I LOVE IT!!!

The location is very convenient right in the middle of Wanchai. Can just hop off the tram! The building also has some historical significance and the view's great on the 2nd floor dining area. The tables are quite comfortably spaced out. Service's quite good. There were more servers than customers that night! Mostly polite and courteous but one waitress did get our coffee order wrong The bread choices were simple but good. Just plain white or wheat. Their wheat bread looks plain but the texture and taste are great! I have to mention that the SIDES here are delicious!! As for the mains they are british influenced. Braised lamb shank was very tender and flavorful! Their salad leaves are also very fresh. Didn't get to try their desserts. Their decaf coffee could have been better. Overall for the ambiance, view, food, service I feel like it's worth the price. I wonder how often the chef changes the menu.. would like to come back another time! Recommended Dish(es):

Go pawn for lunch? The idea would certainly meet with disapproval by your parents or your other half. But this Pawn is not the pawn they may have in mind. The Pawn in Wanchai used to be an old pawnshop. A few years back, as Hong Kong started to preserve her heritage, the place was declared an historic building and has since been revitalized as an English restaurant. I actually visited the place for lunch quite some time ago but never got the time to write the review. Passed by this place a few days ago and noticed that it was still offering set lunch at $150. This is really something unusual but good to consumers under the rapidly mounting inflationary pressure. So I figured that I owe them a review. There are two entrances to the Pawn. One is from an elevator by 大王東街 while the other is from a flight of narrow stairs off Johnston Road.

For dessert, we ordered chocolate bread and butter pudding and tried Eton Mess. We never tried Eton Mess before. The hostess explained that Eton mess was an English dessert consisting of a mixture of strawberries, pieces of meringue and cream, traditionally served at Eton College's annual cricket game against Winchester College. That was the background. As for the mess itself, the presentation certainly lived up to its name. The taste was a bit too creamy and heavy for me personally. But at least I've now learnt what the mess is what about and is definitely worth trying.

This is my second time visiting the Pawn, first time coming for my birthday dinner. On my second time, we came in a totally different occasion, just a casual early lunch with small group of friends, sitting on the terrace overlooking the busy streets of Wanchai. Coming without too much expectation for the food gives me a much better experience this time! I love their brunch-like lunch menu, which is perfect on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered the Eggs benedict with loch fyne smoked salmon (very british choice of smoked salmon indeed!). Very nice Eggs benedict, served warm with eggs cooked just right! Although this was a December afternoon, the heaters stood around us kept us fairly warm (at times even a bit too warm) throughout the meal. I like how it is not too busy on a weekend afternoon, gives you plenty of privacy to have a good chat with friends. But honestly The Pawn would not be the best choice to me for a fine dining place. I think its the decor (the wooden chairs & tables) & the food give me the feeling that this is a better place for a more casual dinner/ drinks with friends.

Restaurants serving good British cuisine have always been rare commodities in Hong Kong but the recently opened, The Pawn, is poised to change this perception in a hurry. On paper, the Pawn certainly has what it takes. They have assembled an excellent team with a proven track record. Their executive chef, Dave Tamlyn, served as an apprentice to Marco Pierre White, who was best known for mentoring the famous Gordon Ramsay and their pastry chef has trained at The Wolseley, which was one of the most difficult tables to get in London. Another impressive selling points are the location and ambiance. The restaurant is centrally located among the busy street of Hennessy Road and is easily accessible by walk from anywhere in Wanchai. And if you like historical architecture, this will definitely be your cup of tea. The restaurant is housed in a nicely restored heritage building which used to be a century old pawn shop. If you are not shy of winds and rains, you can pick a table on the outdoor terrace overlooking the heart of Wanchai. The interior is tastefully decorated with a colonial twist as well. As we all know, 'space' is somewhat of a luxury when it comes to restaurants in Wanchai. For most restaurants that cannot afford the spacing, tables are often scrambled together making it very difficult for one not to overhear someone else's conversation. But you certainly won't see it here at the Pawn. Privacy is almost guaranteed, as the tables are nicely separated with great distance from one another. We arrived at the restaurant a little bit late for lunch so we were starving the moment we sat down. Looking over my shoulder, I saw a gentleman having fish and chips. Two large pieces of fish fillet, deep fried to golden colour, yet not oily in texture. I was tempted to give it a try but too bad we were having an important meeting in the afternoon and I decided to order something of a lighter variety so I won't be falling asleep during the meeting. A carbon copy of your average lobster bisque. Very strong in flavour and it was served with two small pieces of toasts. The pork loin looked a bit rough in texture but it actually tasted better than it looked. The dish was served with a special gravy sauce, potato and purple onion. At first, it tasted like whisky on a rock (probably because it just came straight out of the frigate) but when the ice cream started to melt and soften, it had gotten better. Nevertheless, the taste of whisky was a bit too strong for my liking. All in all, it was a pleasant dining experience. Both my friend and I concurred that the food could use some improvement but the atmosphere probably warranted some extra marks here and there. I would certainly recommend this place without reservation.
