    - Chocolate Mousseline Cake.
Although this tasted so great in both taste and texture, with even a slightly crispy base... I did think that this wasn't as unique as some of the cakes we have experienced in Paris, Japan or even Taipei. Executional accuracy however was quite spot on.

    - Lychee and Raspberry cake was also executed well.
Although the Mandarin Cake Shop is almost a mandatory visit, when it comes to the best cakes and chocolates and breads in town, somehow, and does anybody else also agree, I wish it can be pushed to another pastry level? lol

The Mandarin Cake Shop is a long-standing cafe with consistently high standards. Besides their delicious cakes and pastries, they also offer a lovely selection of sandwiches, quiches and salads during lunch time. They have a salmon cous cous salad which tastes amazing - the slow-cooked salmon is tender and full of flavour, and goes very well with the perfectly seasoned cous cous. It costs $65 for a "small" box for takeaway - which isn't actually that small, but I usually go for "large" ($85) because I can never have too much of such goodness! The salad costs $105 + 10% if you eat at the cafe.

Went for the top! Just OK Feb 13, 2013
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Cova? Ticked. Arome bakery? Ticked. Where else provides decent birthday cakes for ladies aged above forty? Thought of Ms B, but the portion was either too large or little. Maybe next time. And there my friend recommended me the Mandarin Cake shop, and I thought "Why not? It's worth it for my mother at least!".

Having read the cake list from their website, it seemed like Opera Cake was the most unique candidate among all. Not that it was cheap, but I thought it was acceptable given that it was made by the Mandarin's kitchen.

It was my first time tasting the French Opera Cake. I was very excited. To my surprise, the cake itself was very delicate and fine. Topped with small Maltesers aliked chocolates, two big almonds and bits of "gold-papers", the cake was made with layers of almond sponge cake soaked in coffee syrup, layered with ganache and coffee buttercream, and covered in a chocolate glaze (further proved from internet's recipes!). But what surprised me was that, the Mandarin added an extra layer of digestive biscuit crust at the bottom to make the sponge cake more filling alongside with the coffee and chocolate filling and icing. In short, the whole tasting experience was extremly rich.

Regrettably, I am not a fan of over-fillingly rich cakes, not to mention such large piece of Opera Cake. When it comes to the combination of coffee, chocolate and almond, I must admit that I would much prefer individual taste than a mix of three. With that said, given the servicing, packaging and the choice of ingredients, there's no doubts that Mandarin Cake Shop remains to be one of the most popular cake shops in town.

I feel so smart! I upload my photos first in case the site freezes on me!
I want to SCREAM, I LOVE THIS PLACE! Why haven't I gone sooner!!!! I feel like I wasted part of my life by not coming here sooner. I feel like I wasted my tastebuds energy by not coming here sooner. I feel like I wasted my calories on other cakes that I've ate that are not good. Ok you get it, I LOVE THIS PLACE. Everything is over the top here at the Mandarin, packaging, price, service, decor, etc... I chose the Opera ($39), Raisin scone ($18), and Custard donut ($20). The Opera is so good. It was the perfect percentage of dark chocolate used that wasn't bitter not sweet, but with cocao flavor. The texture was amazing as none of them stood out more than the other creating an awesome balance and consitency to put your fork through it. It was tiny and I could have finished it with 2 bites but I slowly devoured it. The raisin scone was the best I've ever had, I'm serious. I've had scones in United Kingdom many times from places like Harrods to a regular bakery. The raisin scone was moist an it wasn't hard like a rock. I chose to eat it without butter, cream, and jam, but in reality you don't need it because it is so good. I would like to have more raisins in it though. That day they had 3 kinds of scones, plain, cheese, and raisin. The custard donut....well...I don't was to say it was bad, nor average. It was good except for the dough, it was tough and too chewy for a donut. I'm from California and we have a lot of good donut shops, and I grew up eating donuts, so I know what I like in a donut. The texture bettwen the custard filling and chewy tough dough didn't meld together. If the dough was a bit softer this donut would be so amazing because the custard filling was so AH MAY ZING! They sure did not skimp on the filling. I would like to see this custard filling used on profitleros or even in a layer of a cake.
I will definitely come here again and again. However, I will dine in next time so I don't kill any trees. The packaging was too much even though it was nice.

It was my birthday and I was desperately searching everywhere for the perfect green tea cake. I've tried Tony Wong's small green tea cake and was willing to order one of those in 1lb, but alas, they did not have it that day. After many searches, no other websites seemed to advertise green tea cake. But with nothing to lose, we gave Mandarin a call and they said they could make a green tea mouse especially for me shocked

I was ecstatic and happily went to pick up my cake a few hours later. After waiting a few minutes, the shop assistant brought my beautifully packaged and delicious looking green tea mousse. We brought it out after dinner and all the guests loved it! The mousse was fluffly, flavorful and not too sweet and the texture was wonderfully balanced with a cookie crust at the bottom. The middle layer was filled with a mixture of fresh berries, and even though I'm not a huge fan of berries, it was absolutely delightful!

I would definitely order another cake from Mandarin Oriental and highly recommend it. The price was necessary for the quality and even cheaper than Tony Wong smile

    X'Mas Stollen Bread - wow !

    bowlChristmas Stollen Bread -
I am not usually a big fan of stollen bread as it tastes like mulled wine without the wine lol lol However I've decided to write this review before Xmas, because this Stollen Bread was AMAZING! Just the right amount of candied fruits, raisin and spices and a well judged sprinkle of powdered sugar on top. The bread was expectedly slightly dense and moist. Can't believe how good a Stollen can taste until I tried this version! ~ 5/5

Their famous chocolate bolts and nuts are actually very good as well and a fun gift to buy for others. The reddish one seems to have slightly cinnamon/spice influence but the chocolate under is smooth and slightly dark but not bitter. A very fun way to eat chocolates. ~ 5/5 tongue

I have always wanted to try their cakes so I was really chuffed that I could splash $100 on their bakery with a $100 gift certificate from Openrice.

It was tempting to try their cakes and their savory items, but in the end I decided to get the savory items and a donut because the cakes should be indulged there with a cup of nice tea.

Before I went, I checked their online menu and reserved the ones I wanted through phone.

When I got there my order was packed and ready to collect.
I really liked their paper bag and lavish packaging.

This was interesting because it was made with XO sauce which is Chinese.

It also contained pieces of scallop which must have come from the XO sauce.

i tried their monthly special cake today,

it was orange dark chocolate cake.

    there was just four layers,

with the top thick dark chocolate glazing,
then followed by simple chocolate sponge cake,

and below was dried orange skin infused praline,
and same, simple chocolate sponge cake.

outside there was some broken hazelnut pieces and half a piece right at the middle of the cake.
    my tone was flat,
exactly like what this cake made me feel.

i saw others not buying cakes at all,
all of them focused on the mandarin cake shop chocolates.

Went for dessert after lunch in Central. This place brings back good memories of when I did my internship in the MOHK Pastry Kitchen. The fact that I came back for more cakes even after eating them for 4 months continuously, shows how good they taste and how much I miss them tongue

Was there with two other friends. We ordered 3 cakes to share: Opera Cake, Double Milk Chocolate Cake and Cheesecake ($37 each).
    Opera Cake
    Opera Cake

I really appreciate their Opera Cake - so many layers in such a small piece of cake! However, I feel that (even in small quantities) this cake is a little too sweet for my liking. The taste of chocolate is as rich as I like it, almost bitter. There were also layers of crunch which was really nice. Its taste of coffee was very strong - a little too strong for me. Nonetheless, great texture (smooth and crunchy) ... would be great for those with a very sweet tooth and a coffee lovers!
    Double Milk Chocolate Cake
    Double Milk Chocolate Cake

This has always been my favourite MO cake! I like chocolate desserts and this fulfills all requirements! So pretty on the outside with a glossy chocolate glaze topped with gold bits! The inside is also a beautiful combination of browns. I like how this cake isn't overly sweet but still very rich in chocolate. The texture is also crunchy and not too soft. I'm not a big fan of mousse cakes so the thick layers of cake in this slice was perfect paired with the chocolate cream lol
    Cheesecake
    Cheesecake

I didn't try the cheesecake but according to my friend, it was very cheesy. He would've preferred it to be sweeter than what it already was.

In terms of the cake shop itself - really regret not taking pictures of the cake displays! All so beautiful and delicate, made by talented pastry artist of MO. The interior was dark but grand, with a small number of seats on a bar-like table surrounding a big decorative centerpiece. Spacious and comfortable, the physical setting is perfect for a nicer dessert experience with friends.

The service was excellent too. Everyone was nice and friendly, all were females. It was great that they offered to serve us water with the cakes, and the water was totally cold enough! They are also able to remember your orders without writing them down, very important for a 5 star hotel like this. Great!

And the price is expensive for a piece of cake, but normal for a 5 star hotel. I guess the whole experience is worth it, but not if you are only going to buy the cake to eat home. But of course, eating there would mean another 10% service charge.

    Likes: Double Milk Chocolate Cake
    Dislikes: -
Come Again?: Yes, when I'm around and feel like a nice dessert with friends.

Embarking on a trip to seek out good cakes, we ended up in the Mandarin Oriental cake shop. There was quite a variety of cakes to choose from, and some of the combinations just sounded divine.

In the end we opted for the 'Lychee and Raspberry Mousse' and cassis 'Mousseline Vanilla Bavaroise With Sago'. For some reason I was expecting the taste to be quite strong, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were not. The lychee and rasberry mousse was light and fluffy, it was not too sweet and was quite appetising. I am not a huge berry fan, but the cassis mousselin vanilla Bavaroise with sago, also gets the thumbs up, the berry taste was not too overpowering, again very light and fluffy. These cakes are perfect if you want a dessert that is not too sweet and sickly.

Definitely worth a try, I will be going back there to try out some more, for sure tongue Yummy

It might be worth checking out the big cakes too, although not pretty in presentation I saw them flying off the shelves, actions speak louder than words as they say.
    lol

My family orders a loaf of Apricot & Pecan bread at MO cakeshop at least once a week. We like the sweet and juicy apricot pulps and the densed texture of the bread but the bread itself is too salty. We have requested them to put less salt in it and keep ordering, hoping to see the improvement but it turns out every time that our comment is ignored.sad

fell in love with 中環置地 Le Salon De Thé de Joël Robuchon 蛋糕後,tongue
    吃蛋糕也沒有再考慮這家五星酒店la...sad

today i went to 置地 at six fifteen but found that they had already sold out all items...shocked

這次來mandarin o.卻只有three cakes i've not yet tried: cream horn, caramel apricot almond cake and raspberry and chestnut tart...
    嚐嚐它新推出的tart la~!lol

i'll not post the photo of its cross section because it was too wonderful that you all must go and try!!!mad

    what i can tell was:
    1. it was not almond tart but was flour egg butter style
    2. what you couldn't see was consisted of fresh cream, raspberry jam, chocolate sponge, custard to stick tart on card, white chocolate painted on tart

    must try it by yourself!!!lol

    Recommended Dish(es):  Tiramisu,Opera,brownie,american cheesecake,blueberry muffin,chestnut tart,carrot bread,all!!!
