This is the second visit. Last Lobster Bar review @ http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=2229174

    Cuisine: European
    Food rating: 4/10*
    Service: 9/10
    Ambiance: 8/10

    * Food Rating: 6/10 is equivalent to 1 Michelin star, 8/10 to two Michelin stars, and 9/10 or 10/10 to three Michelin stars

    Signature seafood platter
For the price and you get all these seafood, not a bad idea. In general, it wasn’t the freshest seafood you eat, but it was alright.
    4/10
    4/10

    Mushroom minestrone (3/10)
The colour was much lighter than my first visit. I was very disappointed.

    Lobster bisque
The second try of lobster bisque, definitely had a massive improvement. Great balance between alcohol and the lobster flavour. But 4 diners, 4 bowls of different volume of soup, I thought we were eating fine dining, these minor details count.
    6/10
    6/10

    Grilled with herb butter sauce
The lobster was lacked seasoning, rather tasteless. I quite like the idea of using herb butter sauce, but the idea wasn’t executed well.
    2/10

Grilled sirloin steak with new potatoes and Bearnaise sauce
No seasoning, tasteless. A rare steak was cooked as medium, rather unexpected at a 5-star hotel. The classic French sauce was nicely made, just slightly too watery. Nice blend between butter, egg yolks, wine and vinegar, the fresh tarragon gave the sauce a kick!

    Thermidor
It is still one of the best Thermidor I ate in Hong Kong. It was more burnt than previously. The sauce was well balanced between egg yolks, crème fraiche, mustard and cheese. Again, it was lacking some fresh herbs.

Vanilla and chocolate creme brulee with chocolate chip ice cream
Vanilla crème brulee on the top with chocolate crème brulee at the bottom, a 2 layer crème brulee, not a bad idea.

Not a bad experience, but the food quality is rather inconsistent.

Give me a thumb up if you like it!

I cannot picture where diners can enjoy fresh lobster in every single dish – steamed, boiled, grilled or raw - and I am sure that I am not alone. Lobster Bar and Grill at Island Shangri-la not only will do the job for you, and the savoury taste of this crustacean will linger around without your imagination. In addition, both the lunch and dinner services are accompanied by live music performance. For me, it was the perfect choice for a Easter Sunday lunch with my mother.

Avocado with green apple salad and lobster tarragon jus
The lobster was fresh and poached nicely. The avocado is slight sweet and buttery, the texture is smooth, definitely is a well ripe one. The apple brought the salad some freshness to the dish, it mixed well with the lobster sauce and avocado. It is very seasonal salad.

    Prawn and avocado salad
The prawn was fresh and presented beautifully. The avocado is slight sweet and buttery, the texture is smooth, definitely is a well ripe one. The dressing is the same as the lobster salad. I really didn’t see or taste the different between the salads, other than the prawn and lobster.

    Mushroom minestrone
The broth has a deep and rich flavour, together with the mushroom was brilliant. I don’t think you can stop after you started drinking.

    Lobster bisque
If you are not an alcoholic, please avoid the bisque. The soup is full of the lobster flavour. However, the chef has poured a bottle of brandy instead of a table spoon for a tiny bowl. As you can imagine, the alcohol has redefined who the boss is. The waitress (Karlina) has offered for a substitute, handled the situation very nicely.

    Risotto and morels
Like the other restaurants at Shangri-la, slightly overcooked. I believe it could be slightly creamier and season a wee bit more. The lobster claws were slightly bitter. Rather disappointed.

    Thermidor
One of the best Thermidor I ate in Hong Kong so far. Personally, I would have grilled the lobster a minute or 2 more with more parmesan on top. The sauce was well balanced between egg yolks, crème fraiche, mustard and cheese. It would be even better to serve with some chopped herbs, such as chives and chervil.

    Crepes Suzette
It was an exciting dish to order. It was cooked at the dining room, where you can see everything and the smell was lovely. It would be even better if they flame the alcohol and let it burn off; it would have intensify the flavour too. The crepes were spongy and buttery. The sauce was sweet and full of orange flavour, yet the orange zest gave a slight bitter. A well made crepes suzette!

Exotic fruit salad flavoured with lemon grass, mango sherbet
The fruit was extremely sweet and fresh, especially the pineapple! For the fruit to go with the sherbet, it is a very healthy and light dessert for a spring lunch. I loved it.

The waiters and manager were extremely attended to details and friendly. They have handled everything with care, Matthew definitely worth a mention. The only thing to catch is they don’t know much about their own menu (how does it cook or prepare). Nonetheless, on service itself, 56th Floor (Petrus) should be learning from the crew.

    很多年前已經光顧,多年之後再來,水準保持得不錯。

The bread is not too tempting. They are a bit cold.

The mussels we ordered are way too salty and the white wine sauce is too bland. Most disappointing item of the night.

Where's the wow? Just OK Aug 01, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I expect a "wow" when having lobster at a lobster bar

Had a business lunch at Lobster Bar. The environment is typical for a restaurant within a hotel. It's not me paying for the bill and I didn't dare to order too much, just a lobster pasta and a salad.

The salad was definitely normal, pretty much what I can get at a salad bar at Great. Vege is no doubt fresh, but shouldn't the quality and quantity be more rewarding?

The lobster pasta. Well, I think diners always have expectations when they pay a premium. It's LOBSTER bar, so please show me what you got! The pasta, I can only say it's par. I think La Fleur or Al Dente do better. The lobster, no surprise at all but a piece of dead seafood.

2.) Lobster bisque : Loved it! Lots of flavour and creamy...
3.) Complimentary bread basket : Good variety.... just couldnt stop eating!!! smile
4.) Seabass : Just so-so... lack of seasoning i'd say...
5.) Lobster thermidor : Super creamy... but i wudnt say its the best i've had

Overall food was okay... price a bit expenisve... but i'd go back for a lunch and try the burger (with foie gras and crab meat).... service wasnt pushy but a little slow..

Having a 50 minutes gap between dinner and late meet up; suddenly thinking of a glass of wine in somewhere with live music....Island Shanghri-la. I don't come over very often, but whenever I'm in the mood of having some quiet moments, this always blings in my mind.

It's weekdays evening at around 10pm, very quiet with only a few customers in there, some were sitting outdoors. A fantastic band was playing Jazz to bring me into the mood, having a glass of my Shiraz....later on, the singer sang a few songs and made me totally feel relax...very nice.

Service and interior decoration are great, pricing is reasonable. It's really a good place for someone like live music in somewhere not crowded.

The BEST Lobster! Smile Jul 01, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
This is the BEST resturant that I have ever tried. We have ordered 2 special drinks (Lychee cocktail & BAY ( a mixture of Lychee juice + some berries + pineapple juice), lobster soup, main course were Grilled Tuna + Goose liver and a grilled Lobster with cheese.

The bread basket was nice, many choices...but I love "Make-in-time" bread..so if this can be grilled before on table would be GREAT!

The soup was the BEST one I have ever tried! It was so creamy and thick, the lobster meat tasted to good and fresh!

The 2 special drinks were fantastic and special especially the Lychee cocktail, it was a mixture of bitter+Sour+sweet....so complex but feel GOOD!

The main course: Tuna was a bit over-done but still ok and the LOBSTER was PERFECT!!!!

Waiters were nice and professional, caring and cheerful!

A nice place to have for your life ever!

An impressive mix & match Smile May 17, 2006
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
The restaurant is very traditionally decorated, looks like a classic English castle. Yet the music is modern, waiters & watiresses are young and pleasant looking, making the restaurant a mixed atmosphere of classic & modern. Very impressive indeed.
We booked a table for two for a birthday celebration, and we were given a semi-circular, very comfy sofa seats. We then ordered a bottle of white wine (house whites range from $300 - 450) which was really good. We had a seafood platter to start and it was really really good. They had mini abalones and Alaska crab feet! I have never quite seen such delicate selection of seafood in a seafood platter. We thened had a Shatin-grapefruit and crab meat salad, followed by a main course of grilled lobster with cheese and butter. The food was incredible, the service was excellent, and even the bread they gave us as starter was very very nice.
It's an ideal eating place for young cuoples and seafood lovers.

Agree that this is a good place for business lunch. But there are so much other choices in the area for business lunch. The astmosphere is good though with the bright big window. The lunch set is $200 for the 2 course and I think is $250 for the 3 course (not sure if this is correct, as I am not the one settling the bill!!)
I had smoke pigeon with salad as a starter and fish with lobster sauce as main course. The taste is only average.
The restaurant is full though, more diners than expected. Most memorable of this lunch...there are 2 giant flies circling our table...I wonder where they come from....and make the meal a bit annoying.
