continue reading

Decided to try this place out after reading some reviews, despite some disappointing experiences with Mexican food in China. I nearly walked by the place because it was so dark inside, I thought it was closed. I saw one pendant light on and came in.First of all, the incense that they burn is one that I hate - it's so overwhelming, and to me, doesn't whet the appetite. I don't know if the intent is to foster feelings of Haight/Ashbury hippie along with the Mission-style burrito claim, but it threw me off. I used to live in the Haight and the only incense you smell is Nag Champa or homemade sticks sold by dudes in massive rasta hats. The only meat they had available at 12:40 on a weekday was the barbacoa beef, which was mildly offputting. I am a carnitas girl, myself, carne asada in a pinch, grilled chicken if desperate. The other meats hadn't arrived yet or something. I asked for the hot salsa verde and to skip the sour cream, and opted for pinto beans. There was an overwhelming acidity that either came from the salsa verde or the lime rice - it was the single and most pervasive flavor note in the whole food tube. The meat was bland, tasting only of stewed meat and not much else. No smokiness, no depth. I liked the heat on the salsa, but the astringency was too strong. Also, the distribution of the ingredients was improper - all ingredients should be present along the length of the burrito, but my meat was all at the bottom and rice and salsa was at the top, along with a clump of cheese. One bright note was that they were not skimpy on beans, which I've noticed is a common occurrence in Asia-based burritos.I don't normally have high expectations for service at a counter-style business, and, well, the girls behind the counter didn't reverse my expectancy. Do note, however, that there are no longer lunch sets, as one Open Ricer had noticed a while back.I have had many, many, many a Mission-style burrito, as well as dozens of burritos from all along the southwest U.S., and sadly this wasn't even close. Size matters, yes, but taste matters even more. I hope they keep trying. continue reading

Since my last visit, the Mexican rice bowl has improved.★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★Vegetarian rice bowl:I was quite surprised the portion was quite big this time because it was tiny on my previous visit and they ran out of sour cream.Everything tasted great together with fragrant lime rice, green pepper slices, salsa, sour cream, guacamole and black beans.Every spoon was packed with exciting tones of spiciness, tartness and the refreshing taste of the salsa and sour cream.★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★◎ⓢⓤⓟⓔⓡⓢⓤⓟⓔⓡⓖⓘⓡⓛ◎Price: $75Service: OKService charge: noYummy factor: okMSG levels: slightNapkins provided: yesPortion sizes: bigGlass of water provided: self serviceEnglish Menu: YesAir Conditioning: Yes◎ⓢⓤⓟⓔⓡⓢⓤⓟⓔⓡⓖⓘⓡⓛ◎ continue reading

Upon hearing the recommendation from a gweilo friend, we went to this small outlet to try the burrito. We have asked the girl at the cashier of her recommendation, but she only murmured a few words that we could hardly hear. We were choosing between the Barbacoa beef ($68) and the Asian beef ($68), but again she did not give us a clear answer between the two, and so we picked the former one. We also ordered a can of Coke Light to split with ($20). The burrito itself was good, well-stuffed with the ingredients we chose. However, just when we were waiting for the food, we saw a notice hanging on the wall which was opposite to the cashier and kitchen (meaning that customers can barely notice it if they dun turn their heads around), saying that there was a grab-and-go combo (burrito of the day plus drink/taco chips) which cost $68. We asked the girl what was the burrito of the day, and she told us that it’s Asian beef. At that moment, we felt being cheated, because she should have told us that the Asian beef was cheaper with a combo set when we asked her about the difference between two beef choices. When we further asked her whether we could change our choice, she simply gave us a shrug. Not that we are not able to afford the $20 difference, but the response of the girl gave us a bad impression on the shop, and the way they put up the notice somehow made us feel that they did not want customers to know there was a combo offer. We dun think we will come again. continue reading
