Kwun Kei坤記 is a popular eatery in the Western District in particular winter time because of its famous rice cooked in clay pot. There food are generally delicious as well as reasonably priced. Having said that, do mind the service and dining environment was less desirable.

    a) Deep Fried Squid with Spicy Salt椒鹽鮮魷 ($60) – 8.5/10

The squid was fresh and lightly battered, good to go with the beer.

    b) Sweet and Sour Pork生炒排骨 ($50) – 8.5/10

The ribs were chopped to a moderate bite size and with much meat attached. The sauce was of the appropriate thickness and sourness too. Very value for money.

    c) Pork Bone Soup in Pot招牌豬骨煲($128) – 9/10

Other than the rice in clay pot, this dish almost appeared on every table for a group of 4 people or more. Yes, you would better be in a company of a larger group because the portion was quite large and also came with a small basket of lettuce. Large chunks of pork bones were cooked for hours before transferring to the pot. The soup was tasty as it contained black pepper, Chinese celery, white radish, corn and dried bean curd sheets, etc. A very good source of collagen.

    d) Rice Cooked in Clay Pot with Spareribs排骨煲仔飯 ($53) – 8.5/10

They use both charcoal and gas in cooking the rice. An array of clay pots were placed above the charcoal to keep them warm. When an order was placed, the chef will cook the rice on gas stove.

The rice was just cooked perfectly, dry enough and yet thoroughly cooked. The highlight of the rice was the crunchy burnt bottom which could be lifted with a table spoon.

There are lots of meats that you can order as toppings on the rice. This chicken with preserved Chinese sausages was another popular one.

    YUMMY 飯焦 :P Smile Feb 10, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

it's lucky that we've reserved the table the day before we came. There were lots of people queuing outside, probably because it's getting colder these days AND the food in Kwan Kee is of such a high quality that it worths people waiting in the cold for long. Freakly, we had high expectations to Kwan Kee as many of my friends have applauded its 煲仔飯 as the best in town. Kwan Kee did not disapooint us though. The 飯焦 is so yummy!!! It's crispy with the aroma of charcoal. There's entirely no exaggeration to say that they're the best 煲仔飯 i've ever had so far.bowl

Before the coming of claypot rice, my friend and i ordered three more dishes: 粟米班腩,蔬茶煲 and 京都焗肉排 . They are equally delicious too!!!! I especially like 粟米班腩. The班腩 are very tender and it's so big that we're already a bit full after finishing the dish...smile

It's hard to pick a flaw for the food served here. Yet, like other famous restaurants who can always attract customers, Kwan Kee's service was not satisfactory, if not poor. Some waiters and waitresses there were a bit rude, giving us a rather negative impression. Of course, we're food slaves-- wherever there's good food, wherever we'll go. Hence, I'm sure we'll come back againtongue

Get in early, it's worth it Smile Jan 18, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I almost do not want to leave a review because I don't want to share this place with others since it lessens my chance of getting a table!

If you do choose to try to eat here, come very early (right as they open). Or, plan on waiting for about an hour for a seat in the street. Also, when you go here look at a menu before you sit so you can decide quickly what you want. The staff has no patience for slowness.smile

I have been here twice and have yet to be dissapointed by anything. If you order quick and act decisive the staff will treat you nice and bring you things you order quickly. It is quite fun to watch them shew people away for not making a reservation or for taking too long to order.

The non claypot rice dishes are great and come out fast and piping hot. Their Bok Choy is very tastey. Prepare to order 1 or 2 of these dishes depending on how many people you have with you since your claypot rice dish will take about 30-45 minutes to come out. When it comes out copy the locals in the restaurant on how they prepare it. When the bottom rice hardens dig it up to the top! It is quite an amazing taste and is not to be missed!

Be prepared for Hong Kong attitude but embrace it and you will have a great time here! The prices are cheap for food and beer. And, the flavor is unlike anything else. Best had on a cold night.

Been here at last! What a shame that I, having lived in the Western district for twenty years since i was born, have never been to many of the most renowned restaurants/eat-outs in the district. As i was scrolling down the list of restaurants with the most smiley faces, I spot Kwan Kee. Been there for a takeaway order of the lamb pot but never a eat-in as the place was always crowded, especally during autumn and winter time. Since the weather is changing and its significantly becoming warmer, we decided to place a bet for that the place would be less crowded. We even booked a table in advance.

The place was 80% full as we arrived at around 8. Quickly orders were placed and i started insepcting the interior of the shop: it was genuinely local and even the tables were irregular, the chairs were mismatching each other, and the four walls of the shop was full of posters carrying names of dishes they offer, making customers to literally 'look around' while ordering for food. The staff were mostly middle-aged and were chatting with each other, too, in quite a loud voice.

Soon the order of 貴妃雞 arrived. Shining with the grease on the skin, the chicken meat was tender and juicy - dad said its because of the usage of fresh chickens. Perhaps this was really the case as the chicken was significantly better than the tasteless, rubbery sh*t you get at many chinese restaurants!

生菜鯪魚肉豆腐煲 (fish paste in lettuce and tofu soup). The soup was in a pleasant milky colour and smelt good of fish and pepper. There were quite a lot of fish paste balls in and it was quite aromatic, despite more dried mandarin skin could be added to further intensify the smell of it. The lettuce was not over-cooked, i really love the taste of the soup but the tofu was really bland in taste. The soup tasted more like broth cooked with fish paste, with tofu later added. I just cant feel the ingredients have been put into the same pot until the moment of final reheating.

窩蛋牛肉片煲仔飯 - the two pots came simultaneously - and first we chose to finish the beef with a raw egg on top. After some quick stirs the egg was quickly cooked by the heat retained in the pot but the taste was covered by the soya sauce which came with the pots. It was not just salty but somehow sweet, and was perfect to add into the rice with! The beef on the other hand was just so-so, not very strong in taste and was weirdlly too soft in textrure- the consequence of using meat tenderizer?

北菇雞飯 - next we stratched out arms to the chicken, mushroom in pot. The mushroom was a huge disappointment as it was basically tasteless but chewy, and did nothing to the dishes but to add a texture of rubberiness to the rice and stuff. The chicken was great - it seems that the kitchen here has got the straight way to handle the poultry!

One thing that you cant miss is the 飯焦(burnt rice) on the bottom of the pots. They could be esaily stratched off with a spoon an just with some light efforts, toy could get a whole back of crispies which textured like potato chips. The irregular sprnikes of soya sauce has added a savoury taste to the crispies, making them even moe delicious to have. At this point i just cannot understand why people are gooing to places like wing hap sing which serves baked rice with no burnt rice in the bottom at all. The crispy rice is the essence of the dish and i enjoyed hearing the happy pops in my mouth as i bit onto the pieces of krispies.

避風塘炒蝦-the fish was extremely aromatic when freshly served from the kitchen and it immediately attracted the customers on the adjascent table to enquire the waiter what dish it was! the huge prawns were entirely covered with nicely tossed salt, ginger and spring onion and even the shells of the prawns were so crispy and light that they were edible! The shrimp was not particularly tasty but was definitely fleshy, and had absorbed the taste of the salt and onion well. Love the crispy salt too - i actually mixed it with the rice and ate them together! smile

    Other comments:

the place got crowded soon after my arrival as customers went in and out constantly throughout the course of my meal. The shop was certainly one of the busiest in the district and thus do not expect much service and smiles from the waiters. The use of a charcoal grill had given the pots their distinctive aroma but it is also the source of the heavy smell which taints your clothes and hair and stuff, so dont go in your most expensive and smell-taking clothes.
The place was economical to eat at - our dinner costed only $301 and was very cheap considering the dishes we ordered. But given the popularity among both local and trans-district customers, it would definitely be safer to secure a table by making a prior reservation-but as i have said, be prepared for a not-so-polite, if not rude, response from the other end of the phone.

Went with a group of six guys. Great food, excellent value. We ordered 4 claypot rice, 2 lamb shank pot and 4 other dishes... and we only spend around $150 each. Consistent with other reviews, all of the food are really tasty.

Service and cleaniness are not ideal but at this price... can't complain.

Good dishes with wok-hei  Just OK Jul 15, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Went back this night and ordered few other dishes.
The chicken, 1/2 portion was too salted, the texture was good - juicy and tender. However, they just put in too much oil and soy sauce. The home-made ginger sauce was good though.
The brocoli and guropa dish was good. It came with wok-hei, very hot. Once again, too much salt putting in even though we did order this dish with less salt sad

    Overall, it was okay.

Came back again to his popular place - you would have to book everytime you wanted to check in. There is always a little queue during the peak hour 7:30PM onwards till 9PM.
We were lucky this time, we only waited for about 15-20 minutes and we were given a table for 2. We ordered the famous clay pot steamed rice - we had the preserved Chinese sausages - the twins, i.e. the pork one and the one made of liver. We also had pork ribs. This one would wait for about 15-20 minutes for the production time. At the same time, we ordered /tried their home-made chicken 'gui fei' chicken - our 1st time experience. Wow, it came in with nice presentation, simple and basic and it's tasty and fresh.

We also ordered fried 'go tu' fish with salted/garlic taste - it looked so nice and it was crispy. The vergetable -simple dish with soup was good too.

Our rice - the clay pot came, it looked beautifully and once agin, its taste was good. We love it - not too dry, not too wet. Just right.

    We will come back. smile

Hearty winter fare Smile Dec 26, 2009

We arrived at 5:30pm and although the tables were empty inside the restaurant, we were told they were all reserved and that we were lucky to get table outside, which I don't mind, just don't sit too far out onto the street or the cars turning in might bump into you.

First up, deep fried squid which was light crispy and simply irresistable. Then it was the steamed eggplants with garlic, and the eggplants were steamed just right - not too hard and not too soggy, and with just the right amount of garlic. We ordered 2 claypot rice for the 3 of us - eel and frog's leg, beef with egg (for the less adventurous mate). Both were cooked just right, and the crispy rice at the bottom was not burnt as some of the other reviewers mentioned, seriously a bit of charcoal won't kill you (instantly). There were 4 pieces of eel which were very fresh, and all 4 legs from the poor frog. The beef was good, but nothing spectacular.

3 more TsingTaos and the bill came up to $223. Service wasn't bad, as long as you go with the flow and not upset the woman in charge of setting up the tables.

winter comes, Its the time to having 煲仔飯! ho ho ho

I always dinner here because they realy making good 煲仔飯! 椒鹽鮮魷 are another good things to be order. Tast are very good!

And if anyone wants to try 坤記. Please book the table before going, no booking, no cooking! Because I've seen they reject all the walk in customers yesterday night. And they leave with un-happy face.

I can understand why they do that. Because every table's dining time in there are more than an hour. They have only 10 tables, And all tables have been booked by follow. Are there any walk in peoples will wait by around 2 hours for dinner? So in another point of feel. They just don't want them to wait too long. If realy want to try their 煲仔飯, Ring up and make a booking.

To be fair, the 小菜 & 煲仔鈑 there is ok, but that is not the reason I write tonight...

I am sure all of us reading this believes the idea that we don't just "EAT TO LIVE"!

Why we like to eat? Simply, great food makes us happy. Traditional 色、香、味, are of course the key to Master Dishes, but "食德" is equally or even more important! There are quite a number of aspects to "食德", what I want to point out today is Service Attitude!

I haven't been to a restaurant' with that poor service for a very long time. 上上下下雇員的態度 there (from the Employer --> Cook --> Servants) really is 一絕! I don't want to get down to individual incidents (since there are many). Just 2 main pts:

    1. Their attitude to general customers are poor (very inpolite)
    2. They don't admit error when happened (and argue back)

From their poor attitude, I wonder... they must hate their job, then why is the restaurant still here, and why do people still comes?

Good quality food of course is why we are here. But if the 過程 is unhappy, do you think you can still enjoy the food??? huffy

I went to try out this place at around 6PM this evening with my wife and we went there so early because I know it's usully very crowded at later hours. I asked the old bloke there if there is seat for two and he asked if we have reservation and if not, then we dun need to think about eating here tonight. The way he said it was kind of half scolding and we feel like we are beggers. This fucking shit place, I dun know why anyone would go there even if the food is delicious. I hope this place will cloe down soon due to it's poor service and all the impolite staff are out of a job!!
