The best dumplings? Smile Nov 11, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

This small 10 seater open kitchen in Hung Hom defines why I love the food culture in Hong Kong, and why I started blogging. It's cheap, it's easy, it's local and its really bloody delicious. The menu is limited to basically what you see placarded on the walls (with pictures for those of you without cantonese), every single item being dumplings except the excellent spring onion pizza. I shuffle in and find a seat (no wait, a crate) to sit on with a very small amount of table space. No one really takes your order, you kinda just yell what you want in the direction of the kitchen and they'll make a mental note of it (so far they've never forgotten anything). The staff are all very friendly, and don't at all mind my imperfect cantonese.

First to come at me are the excellent Sheng Jiang Bao ($14HKD), big plump doughy dumplings filled with pork, scallions and soup, and sprinkled with sesame seeds. By far the most carb heavy of the dumpling repertoire, but fantastic with beer.

The Xiao Long Bao are steamed to order, and are all made fresh each morning ($16HKD). The skin is soft, moist and imperfectly put together. Din Tai Fung devotees, get ready for a shock: these roughly made unpretentious dumplings beat the pants off the ever-reliable xiao long bao from both din tai fung and crystal jade (the king and queen of xiao long bao makers, respectively). The soup inside is well proportioned and salty, purely heavenly. The skin also doesn't droop with the weight of the soup like a Din Tai Fung example might, as the skin is a little thicker and the soup and the meat doesn't separate as much (probably due to less time under steam). These guys are so tasty that I take them without vinegar, soy, or ginger (which isn't offered anyway).

The fried pork and chive wo tip ($14HKD) are a textural delight, soft skins that tightly hug and contort the filling, and freshly pan fried bottoms with a purposeful crunch that induce a large dopamine release in the brain.

Lastly, the only non-dumpling item on their menu, a big hearty slice of warm spring onion pancake ($5HKD), which really is more like a pizza. Deliciously crunchy, and laced on the outside with smatterings of sesame seeds the sandy remnants of a generous sprinkle of flour through the baking process give this friendly slice a kind of italian foccacia taste. Except you're eating it with chopsticks, which isn't very italian (or easy).

All that food for $49 HKD not only makes this one of Hong Kong's tastiest local eateries, but also one of the cheapest. Located in a fairly nondescript street in Hung Hom (map on openrice), it's a bit of a trek unless you live in the area or studying at the nearby Polytechnic Uni. For me, the trek from Kowloon Tong is worth it every single time. These guys in here are worth supporting too, they work hard all day pumping out this excellent food for not much money, in fairly cramped conditions. And here's an insider tip, if you go around 9.30PM when they close, they'll give you all of their unsold dumplings of the day for a crazy price.

    price was very good,

and they even let me only buy two.

when she saw me take photos,
she specially opened it for me,
not worrying to let cool their product!

    skin was really thin,

not too full but just a bit too salty for me,

but still a healthier bread choice than other restaurants,
i will return for sweet buns.

Great food for it's price Smile Nov 28, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Since I live close to this restaurant, I've stopped by twice already to get some take out. The first time, I had 小籠包 and 生煎飽. All the dim sum are pretty much 4 pieces for $10. 小籠包 was juicy and warm. The sauce was just right. 生煎飽 was soft on the not fried side and crispy on the fried bottom. Since I've always been a fan of 生煎飽, it definitely was a pleasure surprise to find such great quality 生煎飽 for this price!!!

Yesterday, I decided to stop by around 7pm to get some 生煎飽 and 小籠包 for dinner, but they were SOLD out sad. They only had 煎鍋貼 left, so I decided to try it. I was not disappointed. The 煎鍋貼 was also made just right. The crispy side was crispy with a nicely made filling. Since it had some chives (or something like chives) in there, it had a strong smell, so I don't recommend carrying it around. People who don't know the great taste might not appreciate the smell tongue. Stop by this shop if you are in town.

Shanghai Bread  Smile Sep 22, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I really love eating plain bread, both western and chinese. For Shanghai bread, not my favour, cos i don't like eating meat, too fat and too oil. However, this time not too bad, if you really like eating shanghai food, go and try ...really worth and yummy lollol
小籠包(HK12/4p) Very very juicy and the skin is very thinsmilesmile:.... the most yummy 小籠包 that I ate so far...but not suitable for me...too oil and too many fat meat inside..
菜肉蒸餃(HK12/4p) I believe this would be good, not too oil since is steam and have vegetable inside...however I ate this after 小籠包...made 菜肉蒸餃清淡 sadsadsad
生煎包(HK 5/2p) Recommendated by staff, just made. So so cpricy and hot, I really love its skin madmad not too many fat meat (when comparing with 小籠包).. but again too oil since is pan-fired
菜肉飽(HK4.5) I like eating chinese bread, 白白的軟熟的....This 菜肉飽 a bit disappointed...包身not too 軟熟. also 肉汁滲入包入面, too oil sadsadsad (not my favour, I like eating plain chinese bread more)
蔥油餅(HK4.5) Again just made, very hot and very cprisy shockedshockedshocked But too fat ar....so guilty after eating it tongue
Although the place is too small and not comfortable, it is clean and the staff are nice.
Paying such cheap prices and eating these yummy Shanghai food 即叫即蒸....is worth to go and enjoy yourself lollol

Cold 鍋貼..... XD Just OK Sep 14, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Bought a steam rice for dinner but it's a bit small....so I tried to order $10 of 鍋貼, which give 4 of them, this should be just right to get full.

They were picked from the plastic box...with no heating equipment...so when I got the paper bag, the whole thing is just - COLD mad

Taste is ok but no juicy inside....the biggest problem is it's just so COLD...

I really love their 小籠包 'coz it is made to order, always hot and full of juice inside, I think I'll stick with their 小籠包 only............bowl

If not the 小籠包...I'll definitely give it a cry face...

Wonderful lunch Smile Apr 30, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
    The food here is great.

When you walk in you see a run-down small shop. The menu is extremely short and there are flies zooming by.

Do not let that deter you. Push on, find yourself a seat and order from the 15 items listed. Bear in mind to order the xiao lungbao 小籠包, fried dumplings 煎餃 and the sheng jianbao生煎包.

The dumplings' skin is just the right thickness for it to harden and be crispy at the bottom yet soft and chewy all around, and the filling is very juicy and aromatic. the sheng jianbao tastes good and juices actually squirted out when you bite into it. The xiao lungbao has transparent skin, you can see the juices flowing freely inside, need I say more? tongue

It does not need to be complicated.
Most good things are like that, uncomplicated.
But if you look past the exterior and look closely inside it has a complexity that fascinates and baffles the mind.

Good food is just good ingredients simply cooked and presented.
The typical food of the masses.
