Causeway Bay is filled with decent and budget-friendly Japanese restaurants, and The Mon is one of them. The tables in the dimly lit dining area are nicely spaced out, and the exposed wooden beams and dark wood furniture make for a serene and traditional decor. Service was friendly and helpful, and dishes were speedily sent out from the kitchen. The prices were very reasonable - we ordered enough food to feed three hungry adults and the bill only came to around $250 per head. If you are going to heed my advice and pay a visit to this restaurant, don't forget to make a booking as it can get very busy, especially during weekends! 一門是銅鑼灣熱門的居酒屋,陰暗的餐廳很有傳統日式風格。最出名是串燒和蛋製的菜式,份量不太大但味道好!

Birthday dinner, all girls of 6. Haven't been here for over a year, that was another girls dinner gathering before CNY last year. Time flies... Halloween is coming soon, and they have seasonal decoration at the entrance as well as in the restaurant, I always like wooden furniture, like what they have, natural raw feeling of tables and chairs, rough wall surfaces, etc. One of our friends is a frequent customer here, so she's quite familiar with the menu and more importantly, she knows the manager so the quality of food and services are tightly monitored. Late dinner at 8:30, i..e. start eating at almost 9pm; it's kind of late for me... We quickly ordered some sashimi, sea urchin and chicken salad. 牡丹蝦, fish sashimi and scallops were quite nice, especially when we finished, the deep fried shrimp heads and also soup of shrimp heads, yummy! 海胆 from Canada were very small, might be not the best season, but still sweet.象拨蚌 好爽甜. Chicken salad was just so so, my friend said their Japanese female chef was not there, this dish was her creation so she's is the one to make it perfect...anyway, I haven't tried that original creation, so can't compare. Followed by another round of sashimi, the manager recommends 秋刀, not bad, but not my favorite. Salmon and octopus were nice. I like the Japanese BBQ 串烧 here very much, we ordered ox tongue, chicken wings, chicken soft bones, wagyu beef, potato and sweet corn. All are delicious. Just perfect! I love OC tongue and the wagyu beef. We brought 3 bottles of sake and finished all, cheers. Happy dinner gathering. Service was very pleasant, although it's full house, the waitress helped us changing our dishes proactively.

I had a dinner at The Mon with my friend from Japan. We were both happy with the service even though they got some bad reviews on their service. The food is good and price is fair. This is a restaurant I come to a lot, so I didn't hesitate when I was asked to recommend a Japanese restaurant for my colleague's farewell lunch. I was happy to be able to come here with my colleagues but sad that it was saying farewell to a colleague who I have worked together for 10 years. Anyway, 7 of us arrived hungry ready to try whatever they could bring out. For the first round, we ordered some sushi and grilled skewers. Avocado and soft shell crab rolls were very fresh and the avocado tasted buttery and not over ripe. The assorted sushi mostly got good reviews. I had the one with roast eel which was sweet with firm flesh. I don't eat raw fish and so was happy to find a cooked sushi. Then we tried something I had never tried before, sticky mochi cake and cheese grilled and wrapped in seaweed. I thought the sticky texture was interesting but the dish had very little taste, just a fun food item. I may not order it again in the future. The skewers are probably what the restaurant is famous for. We ordered beef tongue, chicken wings, chicken soft bones and I had some beef tongue and chicken wings, both were delicious and juicy, browned to just the right degree. A highlight of the meal. The grilled lamb chops were huge, thick and my colleagues who had them said they were probably the best dish of the day. i didn't have one as I wanted to save space for the other dishes. We had 2 Korean dishses, bimbimbap and fried pancake. It was not a surprise that they were not particularly good. I guess it wasn't clever to order Korean dishes in a Japanese restaurant. And they did come before the star of the show. Egg omelette with crab has always been our favourite but this time, we left it to cool before we ate it because there was just too much to eat. When we got to it, maybe it had past it's best . No one found it outstanding. My fault as I should have insisted we ate it when it first arrived. OK, lesson learnt. We were almost full at this stage but decided on a last round of food. We ordered some grilled and fried vegetables and desserts. As I do not eat leeks, I couldn't comment. Fried pumpkin was delicious probably because they used a type of pumpkin very suitable for frying. Grilled eggplant was a disappointment as they skinned the eggplant which makes it just a mushy texture with no character. i like the colour and texture of the skin of eggplant and I think the skin is also nutritious. Most of us went for various form of dessert combination which included green tea ice cream, sweet bean curd and mochis. I wouldn't have said any were memorable. However, the Blue Mountain coffee which took a long time to prepare came looking very professional and my colleague approved of the taste and quality. And so ended a successful farewell lunch and many dishes I had not tried on previous visits. No one had been to the restaurant before except me and they mostly thought it was a good place for casual and non expensive Japanese food. The restaurant decor in the theme of an old Japanese drinking restaurant was also rustic and cosy. I will definitely still come back regularly. .

We went for a saturday brunch and after hearing all the hullabaloo about this place thought that it was going to do some serious impressing, it didn't. It was still good but it is definitely not as good as the hype you'll read. The best I've had in Hong Kong, especially at the price, but I'll just say it's fresh and tasty and can sorta see why the uninformed flock to this place. I'll stick with the best first You go to a japanese restaurant to eat... eggs? Well sounds crazy but I was glad I was in the party and suggested it because they never tried this before. The steamed egg is the absolute must try signature dish of the Mon and it definitely didn't disappoint. The egg was perfectly cooked and it went faster than the sushi... which is somewhat sad since I expected a good sushi. The chicken gristle had a great smokey taste to it but was definitely oily. Again not the best I've had especially for the price and while I liked it it is only because I love chicken gristle. What was supposed to be the main dish just seemed like a filler to me. The sushi was fresh but had no other distinguishing feature that set it apart from other expensive HK sushi joints. While good it seemed ho hum compared to everything else. I realize I may have had a less than shining experience and perhaps this is the lowest quality you can expect from the Mon. The steamed egg was definitely one of the best I've had, and if this is just an off experience I can live with how this has over 200 smileys while other restaurants that are far superior than what I experienced gets crys and OKs. this is the first them i and my fiancee to dine here. lighting is a little bit dull as it's selling the mood of romance. (just a bit too noisy) the wonderful service is really impressed me. the food generally are good, especially they are hot enough (for hot dishes) the 10 Chef recommended sushi are really nice, and the hot pot ginger-pork rice are pretty good as well. Wow...we make reservaton at 7:15pm and waiter called and reminded us that "only hold table for 10 mins...dun late" ..once we arrive on time, we find that it's already have 80% full and later on...full house....really have too many fans. We had great night over there egg cake w/ crab: it's so delicious that make me remeber my life at Toyko. it's milky and smooth with lots of crab meat inside..Besides, it's keep hot with smoke after 10 mins delivery . Sushi Platter: we wondered whether we order sushi or sashimi, At last, to judge a Japanese restaurant, we must try the rice, so we order Suhi. Out of my expectation, rice are sticky to stick with sashimi, and it round, chewy and have a liitle bit vinegar taste....sushi.. of course so fresh with urchin, mashed Tuna, scallop and prawn. In fact, I just try urchin sashi but it's so sweet...again, I found that I was in Tsuiji Market. Pan Fried cake with Shrimp: I haven't tried it in HK but it's so crispy, goofd taste. Even I ate 5 pieces, I won't feel oily but rather wanna to eat one more. But I think if it use fresh shrimp or if I order scallop would be better, cos the shrimp are frozen and it tastless. skewer with Chicken soft joint: even the waiter passed the" 7 taste powder", we did not put onto our skewer cos all seasoning are well included at the chicken....again, this is recommended dishes also. Staff are well trained and the atmosphere is so nice...sometimes staff said some Japanese with highly morale even I dunno what they said..I think some kinds of welcome (but not irrasuimasai).. This place is consistently good and I've been back many times and never been disappointed. I had my bday dinner here with 15 ppl. The service and food were both excellent. Some ppl who'd never been there were raving about it. And the best thing was, with all the food and drinks and sake, the cost was only around $300 per person! Recommended Dish(es):

This place was pretty busy when we arrived. We had reservations, so getting a table was no problem. When we first stepped out of the elevator, one of my friends asked, "Is this place even open?" The reason for this question was because of the dim lighting. If we hadn't known of this beforehand, we may have left. We were promptly seated, and given menus. Okay, a note about the menu: if you don't know Japanese/Chinese, you may have some difficultly reading the menu as there is no English (we didn't ask if they had English menus because most of us knew how to read Chinese). However, there was a lot of different things to choose from and we ordered several dishes. Overall, the service was pretty good. They had a keen eye for spotting empty water cups and we were never without water. There is a button on the table for you to press when you need a server -- this is a lot more convenient than trying to get someone's attention and flag them down. Out of the dishes we ordered, nothing in particular really stood out, except for the signature egg dish. A quick google search revealed that this dish is called 'tamagoyaki' (Japanese rolled omelet). It was served with a side of finely grated daikon, which really complemented the flavor of egg. I would say that the prices here are pretty decent. We ordered quite a few dishes and it ended up being about $180/person. - Signature egg dish - Wide range of dishes to choose from on the menu - Speedy service - No English on the menu. All items are written in Japanese/Chinese. - Lighting in the restaurant is TOO DARK. I understand that it's supposed to add to the atmosphere of the restaurant, but if you can't see the person sitting opposite you properly unless you're both leaning into the table (where the lights are directly overhead), you might want to consider alternate lighting. Went there for Saturday lunch. Loved it, will definitely go again. Food: Ordered the sushi set and the pork set. Sushi set came with 6 pieces of sushi, a roll, choice of either udon/soba, and choice of drink ($80). Pork set came with marinated pieces of pork with radish, rice, miso soup, and choice of drink ($68). The food all came very well prepared. The sushi was very fresh and the rice was the right warm temperature, reminded me of sushi I had in Japan's Tsukiji Market. The pork set was also very delicious, the pork pieces were stewed and the sauce went well with the whole soft radish and rice. I noticed the miso soup and udon were the right level of flavor and wasn't overboard. Also ordered gyoza, which was underwhelming, and not recommended since this isn't even a ramen joint. Service: Good service, kept us updated with the gyoza order bc it took longer. Decor: Dark and very Japanese themed, felt I was not in HK - a good thing. Sizing it up: I'd definitely come here again, I thought the lunch sets were good value, especially the sushi set. Went here for lunch today with a friend. Ordered the chicken teriyaki set lunch as they didn't offer the cod fish set lunch. Anyway, the teriyaki chicken was delicious. Yummy and juicy. The rice nicely blended with it as well. Also, the soup was delicious. The sour appetizer was much better than the usual "gwa zi". It was a yummy lunch. Plus, we were given drinks and the orange juice was in a shape of a champagne, which was quite funny!

I heard from my friend and searched openrice that The Mon is a good restaurant and good food, but it is not true at all. 2 friends and I, we ordered 5 dishes. They could bring us food instantly. They pre-cooked many food, the egg was cold, many dishes were cold. We were so disappointed. We were not full, but we didn't want to eat in there anymore, so we left and went for desserts. Finally had lunch after nearly 2 years ... I had the signature egg, grilled ox tongue, cheese chicken, cold soba, dumplings. The signature egg is nice. It served really hot and the portion is large. The thick egg is sweet enough that can be eaten without any sauce. Really signature. Ox tongue, good. Well-done, just that too small in quantity. But the texture is really good and the grilled flavor is strong. Yet the cheese chicken, the slice of cheese is too apparent that it is not too melted and the chicken is not that tender .... should cook longer time. Pan fried dumplings is just so-so, served hot enough and the wrapping looks decent. The pork mix is also hot and well-served with the sauce. However, it is just good, fresh dumpling and not really outstanding. Cold soba, similar to the dumplings, nice presentation and there is quail egg by the side. The noodle texture is not that *elastic* and the sauce is so-so ... By the way, the staff service should improve a bit. They are not that welcoming and passionate in serving ... but those serving the dishes are nice and caring. Overall, just so-so.
