We arrived early on a Friday night after a drink at Amoy Pub, just before 7pm and there were a few tables left. It was perfect timing as the place was completely full within 10 minutes of our arrival. The queue was starting to form by 7.30pm.

We followed suggestions by other reviewers and showed the pictures from openrice to the waiters and we were not disappointed. I think the English menu was probably a shortened version but still had plenty to choose from.

Roast chicken - amazing. The skin was crispy and the flesh very juicy and full of flavour. The best we've had in Hong Kong.

Clams with spicy sauce - very good.

The table next to us were having delicious looking pork chops. The diners saw that we were looking at their food and kindly offered us to try. The pork chops were great - definitely will order next time.

Steamed vegetables and fried rice were also good and the salt and pepper squid was very tender.

The atmosphere was very vibrant with large tables of families and friends out for dinner enjoying a few drinks. The waiters were all very friendly and helpful and put up with our lack of Cantonese.

The price was very reasonable for the quality of food. We had 5 dishes between 3 of us and a few bottles of Blue Girl and it was around 200HKD per head.

This is a great place and we will definitely come ack.

Great food and good service! Smile Nov 30, 2011

We were there early on a Saturday night with reservations for 6pm since we were heading to a movie after. We got the house special chicken that many people mentioned, and the crispy skin on the chicken was very good! It's not like any other chicken I had before. We also got a salt and pepper calamari/squid and that was also very flavorful. Lastly, we got the green beans, and that was yummy as well. The 3 plates for 3 of us with a couple bowls of rice were perfect portions, and the food came very quickly as well.

Since we were there early it was fine, but as we were leaving around 7pm we could see the restaurant start to fill up so I would recommend going earlier rather than later.

I will need to find another opportunity to return and have some more of that yummy chicken.

Recommended food: House special Chicken, Salt/Pepper Calamari

Very Impressive First Visit Smile Nov 01, 2010

I have walked passed this restaurant so many times and I finally made it in with a friend.
I was craving some home stype soup, but my friend wanted its shark's fin soup... so the waiter recommended their soup of the day. It's a very big bowl and cannot taste MSG
    lol

My friend said his shark's fin soup is just so so - the broth is too fishy and we weren't that impressed

We ordered 2 dishes - 豆豉鯪魚油麥菜 and 煎鹹魚肉餅. Both dishes came very hot and tasty. 有鑊氣 and big portion. We inhaled everything in less than 15 mintues
    tongue

We finished dinner around 7:15pm, by then there were many people waiting for table. I heard the waiter saying if you didn't have a reservation, you can't even get on the waitlist then...

Next time I will definitely ask more friends to come so we can try more dishes!!

very disappointing! Cries Mar 18, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I had pretty high expectations of the crispy skin chicken and tofu.

Crispy skin chicken - The skin was crispy and not too oily. However, the chicken meat was not tender or juicy and lacked flavor. It was very average.

Special Tofu - You will think that it has a very interesting texture on your first bite. But afterwards you begin to notice that there's not much flavor and the miniture piece of ham in the tofu doesn't enhance the flavors. Maybe a larger piece of ham would make the tofu taste more complex.

Vegatable - Not very good. very simple steamed vegatables with oyster sause.

Overall, I was expecting a place that's similar to Ming's Garden, in terms of food quality. Unfortunately, this place falls far short of matching Ming's Garden.

I couldn't help but draw a comparison in my head between this shop's proximity, as well as its upstairs dining room 'similarity' to the so-called 富豪飯堂, the Michelin 1 Star 福臨門 just across the street from here! I arrived here because once, I noticed someone on the Openrice Forum, perhaps either SCY or Foodiewil had openly suggested that the chicken here is pretty good. smile So here I was, trying out their Guaranteed Farm Fresh Chickens!

    ***************
    bowl8.5/10 招牌脆皮蔥油燒雞 -
This is advertised as a fresh chicken and by the looks of the Meat, Fat texture and Skin, this can only be true! Some people might feel that most of the natural chicken taste has been replaced with the Spring Onion Oil taste instead, but to me that's fine since that's the point of eating this dish!

What's UNIQUE with the chicken here is that the Crispy Skin on-top arrived in a slightly crystallised format! Paper thin and translucent like, the original criss-crossing cell-forms still appeared from underneath and reminds me of a well cooked Roast Duck or Goose's skin! The yellowish fat between the skin and the meat was tasty and has slightly melted onto the white meat, and despite the lack of actually green spring onion slivers it definitely carried its strong influence in both the chicken meat itself and the sauce below. This was really good indeed and also very tender. Its very slightly better than the Fresh Chicken at 鳳城, and nearly up there with the fried chicken I had at 利苑 earlier this year but not there yet.

    bowl8.5/10 朱洪武豆腐 -
Apparently this is first steamed and then deep-fried. Inside the tofu are Yunnan Ham as well as a little piece of 竹生, the latter seems to be missed by many people because its ultra tiny!

The one I got this night was done really well. The sauce wasn't too gooey and the tofu's exterior was crusty. It could benefit with a bigger piece of Ham and 竹生 though!

    bowl7.0/10 豆豉鯪魚炒油麥菜 -
This seems to be a dish that's more popular up North in ShenZhen or GuangZhou than in Hong Kong. Although the 鯪魚 is just canned stuff, it actually goes pretty well with the 油麥菜 as a combination! This vegetables was in season. Apparently this is actually the top of the 萵苣/萵筍, the stem part used in Shanghainese cuisine and the leaf part more popular down South. They certainly look like they're from the same plant from pictures I've seen - but whether there're subtle variations between the 2 plants, I can't tell you! This dish lacked a bit of Wok-chi however and also needed more of the 豆豉. I've had a few better versions in Mainland before, recently and also in the past! sad

    bowl白飯 -
This actually wasn't a very good rice, so I was kinda disappointed. It didn't smell 'fresh' for one and was also slightly too moist. If this was cooked better, it would have been a very satisfying meal!

    bowl7.0/10 腐竹糖水 -
A free dessert soup by the shop. The 腐竹 has already melted, which made the soup base quite viscous and carrying some soy taste! The 白果 were also nicely chewy and not bitter. I would have preferred this to be even thicker and with more soy taste though!

    ********************
ALL IN ALL, VERY GOOD AND AFFORDABLE RESTAURANT. ITS CHICKEN WAS HIGHLY SATISFYING AND SO WAS THE TOFU. THE STIR FRIED VEGETABLES MEANWHILE IS SO-SO ONLY AND SO WAS THE RICE QUALITY.

Around a Mid '3' to High '4'. Chicken is Close to '5' Quality!

招牌脆皮蔥油燒雞. Great but Can Still be Better!

Apart from western cuisine, there are also nice canton food.

Three of us ordered the signature onion-oil chicken, sour sweet pork, stir-fried veggie in hot pot, fried rice with salted fish and chicken dice.

The four dishes are above averagechopstickchopstick

The signature onion-oil chicken: please do not neglect the chicken skin while all the onion-oil essence is deeply filled, the chicken flesh is tender in texture

Sour sweet pork: usu we order this for raising appetite. The portion of pork is quite big compare to the veggie. The sauce is sour enough, and the pork is chewy. While the green pepper and pineapple are not bad too.

Fried rice with salted fish and chicken: the rice is not sticky and dry in texture, quite nice instead. Just that it is a bit salty due to the fish I think. There are quite a number of chicken pieces in the dish.

Stir fried veggie: it would be better if it really comes with smoke and spice. It seems to have cooled down when it arrived our table. Despite it is oily, the salty sauce is a nice match to boiled rice. The veggie is not overdone, still crunchy ... all I think if it comes earlier, it will be more tempting.

Actually been there for times and the quality still keeps!
