curry lunch!  Just OK Apr 14, 2013
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Tried this place out on a Saturday. Surprising there were seats and we didn't have to wait.
The lunch menu consisted of a few types of curry rice for you to choose, a salad and a drink. I chose the katsu pork curry rice and added $10 for the scrambled egg on top.

The scrambled egg on top was delicious. Very smooth and matched well with the curry rice. The curry sauce itself is spicy but good. The katsu pork on the other hand was dry which made it hard. Overall the flavour and the scrambled egg was good but I probably won't try the katsu pork again. sad

Izumi Curry was on my to try list since it was opened in TST Sogo. The hype was huge back then, but I still do not have the urge to go all the way to Tsim Sha Tsui just for a plate of curry. It was until today I that I went and was excited about it.

I was seated on the side brunch even though there are tables available, but it was quite nice since i can face the street view from the window. The menu choice was vast, but it wasn't hard to figure out what I want.

Hamburger steak Curry topped with Omelette
The dish literally flew in within 10 minutes. The plating was beautiful, I have always loved curry and runny omelette. Yet the egg was not as smooth as it looks, only the top layer is runny, otherwise the texture was quite flat. What's worst, it was tasteless! Did they forget about the seasoning or because it is supposed to be blend in order to pair with the savoury curry?

The beef patty was very lean, stiff and dense, they must have forgotten about the bread crumbs. It was heavily seasoned with pepper but the taste was boring. The Japanese hamburger steak recipe that I followed on YouTube resulted in a much more favourable taste. Mine was tender, juicy and flavourful.

The curry sauce was alright. I top up the spiciness by one degree (+ HKD 5), it wasn't really spicy. It was a bit overly salty for me. The complimentary red pickle radish was the worst pickle that I have ever tasted. It was extremely sweet and sour, with bad texture.

I guess I had some expectation on Izumi Curry, since it had such a hype before. To be honest, I got disappointed upon finishing a third of my plate. I was also shocked to know my curry costs HKD$ 103 (ie HKD$ 114 after service charge) when I got my bill. I did not expect to pay more than a hundred for this plate of curry. Anyway I guess I would stick with Coco curry for japanese curry house at Causeway Bay for now.

Not quite a scotch egg Cries Oct 19, 2012

Came here again because of the cheese and scotch egg

    Homemade hamburger steak curry:

The beef was patty was awful, it was full of elastic bits in it.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Scotch egg curry rice with extra cheese:

When it arrived I realised it was not going to taste nice because the scotch egg did not have sausage meat around it.
The scotch egg had beef patty around it, which was the same as the patty in the hamburger steak.
The patty was so bad that it had elastic bits in it that I wanted to throw up.
The eggs that they use at this restaurant are different because they have orange yolks which explains why their omelettes look really orange.
As for the cheese, it was delicious with the rice when hot, so I had to eat it quickly.
After the cheese had cooled down it was tasteless, hard and stringy.

    Ridiculous service  Oct 07, 2012

I has a terrible experience in this so call sensation curry restraunt. I was on my one hour lunch break from work and not only I had to wait 40 mins for my meal but my friends had actually finish eating their whole meal. I was very hungry and frustrated kept calling thewaiters to chase up my meal. They had no intention to chase any faster and found put that they have actually missed the order. By this time my lunch break was 15 mins away . It was ready at last and I was way too angry and have no mood to eat anymore. First of all this place makes me sick the fact that they don't care and not feel sorry for their fault. My day was ruin by them and I would not advice anybody to go to Izumi Curry Hysan Place. For that kind of price I would rather go for a buffet. You should see their face they d so up their ass and don't give a toss! Even the manager has a very bad attitude . I will never go there again. Why should we pay this kind of service . They can put the curry up their ass from now on! Absolutely terrible

When they had their first restaurant at Tsim Sha Tsui I never noticed it on OpenRice because the eggs at that branch did not look so good, but after seeing the photos of food from this place, their eggs looked really nice.
I just assumed the Japanese style eggs would be the omelette type which are tasteless.

Anyway I just came here for the egg so if the curry was good then it would be a bonus.

I also wanted to try the scotch egg which I will try next time, the only big regret was not ordering extra cheese because it looked like melted chedder cheese and not tasteless mozarella cheese.

Tried two curries: Beef curry and Soft scrambled egg curry.

As this place has just newly opened the Suntory brand oolong tea was complimentary.

The style is similar to the usual Japanese restaurant where the cutlery and tissues are contained in a small tray, however there was only one piece of tissue between two people (for the wet tissues there was two).

A glass of water was provided.

The ceiling was nice and high with nice decor.

    Beef curry:

The portion was quite small, but the curry sauce was nicer than the one for the soft scrambled egg which had a darker colour and tasted spicier.

    Soft scrambled egg curry

The curry sauce was disappointing because it did not taste as good as CoCo Ichibanya which is less expensive.
The staff did not offer the level of spicyness of the curry which seems to be an option from the menu.
The curry was definately different to the one used in the beef curry because the beef one was sweeter.
But since I came just for the egg, the egg was what I expected but slightly bland and there was no salt on the table to give it taste.
I really regretted not ordered the one with cheese because it might have been a nice combination.

We visited いずみカリIzumi Curry @ Hysan Place on the first day of its soft opening (Aug 10, 2012). It was totally impromptu as the ramen shop we wanted to visit was not opened yet (as were many restaurants). This Izumi Curry was different from the self-served counter at Sogo, TST as it is a restaurant with waiters serving you. The menu was also much more extensive, closely resembling the one in Japan and with a lot of items not present at the TST branch.

The menu was actually quite complicated to read as there are so many sets, combos, and extra toppings. The 3 of use opted 3 different curry rice sets:

1.ダブルオムカリー Double soft omelet curry rice ($85)
Double soft omelet curry rice. Love the eggs!
Double soft omelet curry rice. Love the eggs!

When I spotted this on the menu I knew instantly that this would be my order as I am a fanatic of anything egg. This soft omelet came out beautifully with a very glossy runny surface. When bite in the omelet was very soft and velvety, creamy with more egg flavor than the omelet at Hidden Kitchen. The inside of the egg was less runny than the surface, but still smooth. It was more like scrambled eggs than omelet but regardless I loved this omelet very much!

The curry at Izumi was definitely better than most of the Japanese curry places in Hong Kong as it had more depth to the curry taste instead of just plain sweetness. I ordered medium spiciness and I could actually feel some kicks from the spices, something lacking in most Japanese curry in Hong Kong. The curry at this branch appeared to taste even better than the TST branch’s as it had a more intense meat flavor, similar to a base with demi glace sauce. It was very appetizing and went well with the rice and eggs.

I liked the egg so much that in the end I ordered an extra omelet (as topping, $20). This one also came out perfectly creamy and soft. I was a happy person! lol.

2.もつ煮込みカリー +スコッチエッグ Stewed beef entrails curry rice ($85) with added scotch egg ($50)
    Stewed beef entrails curry rice
    Stewed beef entrails curry rice

This was my friend’s order. This was MUCH better than the same dish we had at the TST branch, with the entrails cut in larger pieces and retained some texture of the honeycomb tripe and tendons. This darker stronger curry certainly complemented the entrails very well.
    Extra Scotch Egg as topping
    Extra Scotch Egg as topping

My friend added a scotch egg (not available at TST branch) as topping. The egg was a bit overcooked and there wasn’t enough minced meat under the breadcrumb coating, making it a bit dry overall. The flavor itself was fine though, and eating it with a lot of curry sauce helped to give it some moisture.

3.タルタルチキンカツカリーDeep fried chicken curry with tartar sauce rice (with scallions) ($90)
OK: Deep fried chicken curry w tartar sauce rice
OK: Deep fried chicken curry w tartar sauce rice

This was probably the worst of the 3 combo. There wasn’t anything wrong with the curry but the fried chicken cutlet was too thin. Thus it felt like eating mostly breadcrumb coating with curry sauce mixed with a bit of tartar sauce. Would avoid ordering fried chicken next time.

The rice for all set was decent. Adding soft drink to the set costs $15 extra.

Overall, I found this Izumi Curry at Hysan Place to be much better than the branch in TST in terms of food quality – the curry, the beef entrails, the omelet, all faired out to be better. I will continue to visit (as it is a 2-minute walk from my office), and I hope they will keep up with the standards without comprising the quality control when there are more customers coming in after the mall opened...
