Fresh flow of hand-made sushi! Smile Jul 01, 2012

Sen-ryo’s is one of the higher end sushi chain restaurants in Hong Kong! It mainly serves hand-made sushi which carries freshness and artfulness that sushi represent. The authentic flavours and tastes come directly from its simplicity.

    Cuisine: Japanese
    Food rating: 3/10*
    Service: 5/10
    Ambiance: 5/10
    Price: HK$200pax

    * Food Rating: 6/10 is equivalent to 1 Michelin star, 8/10 to two Michelin stars, and 9/10 or 10/10 to three Michelin stars

Jumbo Scallop, Salmon, Sea Urchin, Seared Squid, Fatty Tuna, Sweet shrimp, Prime Salmon (5/10)
The rice is actually the soul of the sushi, which is very important. Finally, there a chain restaurant knows how to make rice, surprise! The rice was cooked just right with good amount of vinegar. More importantly, the sushi chef made rice that doesn’t break. In general, the seafood were pretty fresh and sweet. But, they don’t put wasabi inside the rice, oh wellll!

    Tuna roll, California Roll (2/10)
Are you kidding me was the first thing came up to my mind as soon as the roll arrived. Seriously, don’t serve the front and the end to the bloody table, especially when the roll is 2 pieces per dish. The worst part is the limitation damaged the freshness of the roll, since it would be pre-made. The roll breaks quite easily too, rather disappointed.

Sen-ryo’s is probably the only Sushi Chain restaurants that I would suggest or visit, if I have were the decision maker. But the only problem being is that you always have to wait forever before you can get your table.

Give me a thumbs up if you like it!

The latest SENRYO Kaiten Sushi addition is very welcome indeed, since it is close to my office. Part of this review is of an Invited Event, but before that I've actually already visited here as I simply couldn't wait! 千両 is the best Kaiten Sushi shop in Hong Kong by a large margin. Their teas are made using properly powdered Maccha and Genmai Cha powders, their Wasabi is the ONLY properly grated type in the business. They also have more fresh and exclusive fishes flown in. There is a catch however, as I find that all outlets of Senryo vary a little on quality. I like the Taikoo Shing one a lot, but the one under Times Squares is surprisingly not very good. This review is a hybrid between both a private visit as well as an invited event, so form your own conclusions. All I know is that I am happy enough to come pay for meals here, as this chain is one of my most regularly frequented lunch or dinner spots. It is to me personally punching above its weight vs its intentions. Some of the items below are only available at this latest Central outlet.

New Whisky Bar at this Senryo outlet.
We ordered a 山崎 Highball to start off the night..

    .

    Grated Wasabi.
The only 回転寿司 kaiten sushi shop to carry this upper end version wasabi, instead of pungent powder reconstituted ones. shocked

    炙り縁側 -
This is almost never served at upper end sushi shops, but is one of many sushi enthusiasts favourites. Even in Japan, sushi lovers flock to cheaper Kaiten Sushi shops to eat this or say 蝦蛄 Mantis Shrimps.

    .

    甘エビ。かに味噌 軍艦 Ama-ebi & Kani Miso Gunkan Maki -
This is one of my favourites at Senryo.

    .

スパイシーツナ Spicy Tuna with Avocado - $88
This was surprisingly nice and whets your appetite with a slight fiery kick. 8/10

    .

鯖の梅トマトソースがけ Mackerel with Plum and Tomato Sauce - $68
Probably near the end its peak season, but this fish was easily distinguishable to be from Japan and not the Norway type, which have different coloured skin patterns and reflectivity and defraction of light (smiletongue). The fish was really great tasting and so was the salad bed of mizuna beneath it. Very lovely and will be back before it is out of season.... Everyone loved this and it was a bargain. 9/10

築地鮮嘗五點刺身 Five Tsukiji Market Daily Specials - $135
This changes daily depending on the daily specials of flown-in goods. Today we received Geoducks (みる貝), Shima Aji (縞鯵), Kodai (小鯛), Hokkigai 2 cuts (ほっき貝 剥き身。ひも) and surprisingly a Cod Milt Sperm Sac (白子), the latter arriving also at its end of season. This is pretty good value for money. What is interesting is that most foodies on the table had different preferences. For me I prefer the 縞鯵 and then the ほっき貝 the most. 6.9/10

    .

塩焼極上佐賀和牛 Salt Grilled Japanese Deluxe Saga Wagyu - $195
This is not the best 佐賀牛, but a next best but still decent 佐賀和牛 type. The cut was unknown but the marbling was even and was cooked really well. Add some flakes of salt to bring it alive, but you could also opt to add some seeded mustard, or even the grated wasabi soy sauce. Very lovely for the price, surprisingly... 7.5/10

    .

銀だらの西京味噌ソースがけ Black cod with Miso Glaze - $118
This was surprisingly of very good quality, although some pieces had a better grilled skin than others had! The international standards to compare this dish with is probably Nobu's version. However this was fairly different, as it was thinner, less marinated cured and more about freshness showing more of the fresh cod taste. The sauce on the side was blow torched first and was about half way between Mayo and Saikyo White Miso in taste, which make this very approachable..... I think old school eaters won't like this, but I happen to prefer this fresher representation. In fact this was way better than the version I received at 灘万 and both there and at Nobu probably costs triple to here. ~ 8/10

鳥の唐揚げワサビソース Fried Chicken with Wasabi Sauce - $48
At only $48 for quite a few pieces of chicken this was once again a bargain. It is not the best out there but it is more than decent and non oily. For me, this might not be a sushi shop item but I will come here just to order these with a draught beer. ~ 7/10

    .

Various Sushis - around $120 in total, a la carte
This came with some pretty decent Toro, Kuruma ebi prawns, and also Hokkaido Sea Urchin on rice. I liked the sea urchins the best but some others thought it was a bit mild, which means it is probably balanced about right at least it was decent fresh and at $50 reasonable. The Toro was also good, but the quality varies from my numerous visits.
