This place is super crowded during lunch, like every other place in Admiralty, so I try to come late (e.g. 1.45pm or later) and can be seated immediately.

The cleanliness of this place is not good -- usually the tables are not wiped clean and there may be bits of roe on the table or seat. It also has a funny smell. shockedshockedshocked However, since there are not really alternative sushi joints nearby, it is either this or supermarket take-out sushi to satisfy your sushi craving.

Cheese with eel roll (芝士鳗鱼卷): Either this or the Boston roll (salmon with cheese) is one of my must-orders at Genki and did not disappoint.

Caramelized fried sweet potato (大学芋): Quite well done except unfortunately it is served cold -- I prefer the way it is served in Chinese restaurants which is hot with threads of malt. The outside skin is crispy and coated in caramel and the sweet potato inside is sweet and soft mad

Steamed egg custard: The quality of this is usually good, light and flavorful. smilesmile

Soft shell crab hand roll (软壳蟹手卷): I like ordering the hand rolls as they are made on the spot. This one though was kind of a let down --- the deep fried crab was cold and soggy, and the seaweed was almost impossible to bite through (???) sad

Service is non-existent, impossible to get attention whether or not the restaurant is full. The chefs making the sushi looked tired and despondent shocked shocked

All in all, this is OK if you want to satisfy your sushi craving but definitely not worth the long snaking queues during lunch and I try to avoid too much raw fish here given the cleanliness (lack thereof) of the place!

Tried some special and new items for the winter fall!
We love the deep fried vegetable with udon (hot), both are yummy and delicious!
The sashimi is quite nice too!

However, we need to queue up for 10 mins for paying the bill!!! sad

    午後之自選三食 Smile Nov 13, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Genki is a my favor place for lonely late lunch. As usual, I picked a "午後之自選三食" (HK$39), cucumber maki rolls (HK$9), and a season's special - live calm (HK$26).

The 午後之自選三食 was deep fried tofu, deep fried shrimp (with bread crumb coating), and sushi plate (salmon, eel, cooked shrimp, and deep fried tempura shrimp). Some people may think the deep fried shrimps had hard coating but I found that they were crispy. If you dip that shrimp in the sauce, the texture turns slightly soft (not bad!). The tufo was a surprise, really smooth and soft, lovely!

The cucumber is my favorite among many different kinds of sushi or roll. I personally think that simply maki rolls is the basic requirement of being a sushi chef.

The live calm sushi is just a "so-so" item and I personally think it is not worth at HK$26.
The 午後之自選三食 is absolutely a good deal for most of the "normal" customer.

The worst Genki Cries Sep 03, 2004
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I usually love Genki sushi a lot - the incredible prices for fairly decent food.

However, the quality of food in this branch (Admiralty) is terrible. The "Uni sushi" [sea urchin] [cantonese: 'hoi daam'] had uni sauce and maybe one small uni. The ikura [salmon roe] was already melting - a sign of poor storage.

Even the average sushi's fish was decaying. It was opaque [cantonese: 'ngaar'] and it stank as if the fish was slightly past its expiry date. Even the Unagi sushi [eel] was so pale and dry, it might have been left on the street for five days.

The service was appalling. I sat on one of the tables (not at the counter) and I could only get one of the waiters to pour me tea TWICE in TWO HOURS! The restaurant is very understaffed at certain hours (esp. 3pm - 5pm).

For eating lunch there, the line is also ridiculously long. The sushi during lunch hours is slightly better, but still far worse than the other Genki branches I have been to.

Conclusion: The Admiralty branch of Genki needs a BIG improvement! The only thing that is good is the cheap prices.

bad service Cries Sep 29, 2001

I went to have lunch with my friends yesterday. Since we knew that the restaurant would be very crowded during lunch peak hour, I went to the restaurant first. It was around 11:55am, one of the waitress asked me when my friends would arrive. I told her that my friends (2 ppl) would arrive within 5 minutes. She then repeatly told me that if my friends did not arrive within this period, the seats would be given to others. What a poor attitude!!
