a relaxing lunch Smile Sep 05, 2010

lunch with my sister near her office. she picked here and booked a table.

ordered 2 lunch set, one was grilled chicken linguine in wine sauce, the other fish fillet spaghetti cremay sauce. In terms of sauce i like the latter better, but both are not bad. Texture for both pasta was nice, not overcooked.

both bread (very crispy) and banana muffin (half slice though) were not bad but i was too full after eating the whole set.

a relaxing place, with a bit sunshine thru the glass but i think the seats are not comfortable...

Disappointing Caesar Cries Apr 05, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
sad
Pumpernickel is my all-time favourite. I love their coffee, their bread, their cake and the cozy environment. Yet, the late lunch I had today was really disappointing...
I went there at around 15:00 and ordered salmon caesar in order to fit my weight-watching plan. I requested them to serve the dressing on the side and skip all the bacon. Guess what~~~ what I got was only TWO pieces of smoked salmon and vegetables with some grime! This was completely different from what I always have in their branch in Causeway Bay!! It's simply a bowl with two pieces of salmon and some lettuce with black spots. By the way, where's the cheese? What's more, the veggie looked bad! I just couldn't believe that it's the caesar at Pumpernickel!
I had also ordered a cup of hot mocha with skimmed milk. When it was served, I could hardly recognize it's mocha! Where's the choco syrup??? The foam was in a mess. Afterall, it tasted like a cup of instant "hot" chocolate(as it wasn't HOT indeed).
It was totally a disappointing visit. I could see that all the staff were expecting their own take-away lunch and did everything in a rush at that moment. The most important of all, I suffered from diarrhoea since then and it drives me to write my first comment here.

Carrot Cake Smile Sep 19, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
On the last day of my HK trip, I went to 天后 to see my ex-boss who are working in there. We arrived the restarant at 5:45pm and ordered a carrot cake and a tea set.

The carrot cake taste totally different from those in North America. Unlike those in US/Canada, it was dry in texture and full of chunky nuts inside. But I love this version too!

The tea set was a slice of thick lemon favored toast, taste unbelievably GREAT.

The cofee is not as good as what I expected.

Food is better than beverage. The dinning area was not roomy and looks old.

pumpernickel Smile Apr 13, 2008

This signature item is one of my best loved breads from this bakery-cafe. It goes best with richer fillings such as cheese and ham because of its characteristic aroma. Eat it like the Germans do by pairing it with beer. Well I don't really drink so a cup of coffee is fine too.

I think the pumpernickel here is the best rye based bread in town. Place-wise, this Tin Hau branch is not the best as it always seems crowded, I prefer the Arts Centre shop for its seaview.

Terrible service Aug 06, 2006
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I went to the Tin Hau outlet on Saturday, 5 Aug 2006, at about 9:30pm. There were two waitresses on duty, one Chinese and the other Filipino.

The Chinese waitress had the WORST ATTITUDE I have ever seen at a cafe like this. She was rude and surly, as if we were imposing on her time. I would have given her a piece of my mind if not for fear that she'd spit in our food.

At the end of the day, it's just not worth it - it's just bread and cake after all. Goodbye, Pumpernickel.

Not as good as expected Just OK Mar 27, 2006

I lunched there yesterday. Ordered a set lunch of Salmon risotto and an additional brownie. The set lunch was only served with coffee, but costs $72, which I think is a bit too expensive. Brownie too sweet. In general, not as good as expected.

Good bread. Good meals. Fair price. Nice environment. Problem? The tables are too small (they are round) and it is very difficult to get a table during lunch time.

ridiculous service Cries Jul 10, 2003
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
i was persuaded by the many good reviews of this cafe but i was only left with great disappointments.
I ordered a pumpernickle roast chicken sandwich one afternoon for lunch. after 20 minutes, nothing came. so i asked one of the waitresses, she with a bad attitude told me that the bread were all sold out. having been waiting for 20 minutes WITHOUT knowing that they have already cancelled my order, i was furious. I then told them to change the bread of my sandwich and waited for another 10 minutes. there it came, the bread without any sandwich stuffing. it was ridiculous. the girl wanted me to pay, i told her that wasn't what i ordered and she kept arguing with me. i left with anger.

Coffee is rubblish Cries Mar 17, 2003

I went there for tea with my boyfriend, we ordered smoked salmon salad, iced latte, iced cuppuccino.
salad was ok, but the coffee ...
i think they are not good at iced coffee, they used freshly brewed coffee machine to make a cup of hot coffee, then added ice and milk to 'make' an iced latte and iced cuppuccino, and soon i found that the taste of both were the same .... it costed $30 per cup ........
