Good and bad...  Jan 31, 2013
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
We booked a large table for Sunday brunch last week. We picked this restaurant as we had been before and had enjoyed the food and wanted to try some other dishes on the menu.

I still think the menu is strong - full of dishes that promise to be delicious. I ordered the beef bacon balls with rice and the cheese and ham toasted sandwich. Both were delicious. My husband had a beef noodle soup thinking that it would be the thai style gway teow nam but it turned out more like HK style beef brisket noodle soup!

The biggest problem for us was that the service was slightly hopeless - the staff did not take everyone's order at the same time for some reason. It took 40 minutes for all our drinks to arrive (after we had had to repeat what our orders were several times). Greyhound promises good tasty food in a quick in / quick out style - unfortunately it is not delivering on this promise.

Low quality food Cries Nov 05, 2012

Have been to this place a few times all for business reasons. This place is close to the office building and offers quick meals. None of these previous visits turns out satisfactory. Every time I decided that I will never go back again for the poorly prepared food, but working in IFC doesn't leave you many choices for a spontaneous appointment.

I ordered fried noodles with fresh shimp and chili for lunch today. The dish is very bland, and is extremely oily. My stomach felt so heavy after eating it. A big rip off for something like this. Interestingly the TST branch is well rated whereas the IFC branch is the opposite. Is IFC's rent so outrageous that the restaurants can't even keep their products to the minimum standards?

About 7-8 of us arrived at the restaurant at around 8pm; having had to wait for a late reservation because somehow, for a reason that is far beyond my understanding, the place was all booked up (must be the branding, because it's quite possibly the most lackluster, overpriced dining experience you'll ever have). Anyways, our appetites were high and we were well ready to eat a big meal. Flipping through the menu, I skipped the appetizers and went straight for the main dishes. One item caught my attention in particular, 'Sandwich in a Bowl'. "Wow", I thought! A sandwich that fills an entire bowl? And for the price of $108, this much be a serious sandwich! This must be the feast I've been working towards all week. "Bring it on!". And alongside a beer for only an extra $42 - oh well, I'll need something equally as epic to wash down this well deserved meal. 15-20 minutes later, after finally being able to flag down a waiter, our orders were in. Another 15 minutes later, the now-sarcastically smiling waiter returned to ask what I had ordered once again. "No big deal", I thought. This place is famous and certainly such a special dish is sub-par service.

25 minutes later, this dish arrived. My man-hunger having reached it's peak, I could see the waiting carrying 'The Bowl'. "Here we go!" my stomach told me. And bam, the dish is place in front of me." Ummm....this must belong to someone else", I told the waiter. Someone who ordered a tiny appetizer, because it was quite literally:

A bunch of iceberg lettuce 'sandwiched' between a bunch of croutons, drenched in low quality cesar dressing.

Nope, it was the dish. Shocking. Appalling. Could not believe how badly I had been duped.
I told the waiter how unacceptable this was, and got a "too bad" -like response.

5 minutes later, my stomach at about 5% capacity and a shrunken ego, I sat whilst the others finished their meals. And just when I thought I had reached the bottom of the barrel, the bill arrived. $165 including service charge.
I have been in Asia for about four years and have never been ripped off so bad.

It was an experience like this that really showed the value of OpenRice and convinced me to open an account. Don't let businesses like Greyhound push us around.

    Never again.
And for the rest of you; never once, I should hope.

I would have taken a photo of the dish, but it was so simple it's quite easy to imagine.

Ever since seeing pictures of the desserts and drinks here I have always wanted to try this place.

Just by the Grey background with the greyhound logo I would have never have thought it was a restaurant.
It looks like brand of clothing and after taking a look at their Thai website, they really are a clothes brand as well.
Similar to how Initial Cafe started from a brand of clothing.

There are two branches in Hong Kong, one at Harbour City and the another branch at IFC.

I tried going to both branches but the service at the Harbour City branch was not that welcoming so I went to the IFC branch which was much nicer, however the restaurant looks over the sea, so it can get quite sunny.

When I got there, I knew exactly what I wanted because there were a few specific things I wanted to try.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Greyhouse style lemon tea:

In Hong Kong I rarely order lemon tea because it is too sweet and the tea that they use is not my cup of tea and it ends up tasting bitter because of the lemon skin.
The lemon tea here is so different and refreshing.
When it is served, there is a glass containing some freshly squeezed lemon juice and tea cubes (frozen tea in ice-cube form) so that the tea does not get diluted.
Pity I didnt get a chance to take a photo of that.
Then they poured the rest of the tea in the glass with the tea cubes and lemon juice.
Since the lemon juice is at the bottom you need to stir it well.
After stirring the lemon tea tastes really nice with natural lemon taste without the bitterness.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Coconut sherbet:

Usually sherbets have a tart taste but this one was not.
It was really good because since I ordered the crepe as well the sherbet only costs $20 more.
The taste was sweet and soothing, it was like coconut melting in your mouth.
The best thing about this coconut sherbet was that it was made of young coconut and the coconut water inside which tastes so much better than coconut milk.
The icy frozen coconut sorbet melting sensation was so refreshing especially when it was made from coconut water.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Butterfly pea stevia tea:

I ordered the tea because of the interesting blue colour.
The tea did not need to be sweetened because STEVIA is naturally sweet, but you can ask for honey.
I was expecting it to have a strong smell of sweet pea flower but it did not and the taste was slightly similar to Grosvenor mordica.

    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Coconut crepe:

The price of this crepe was expensive at $78 per slice but it was delicious.
The crepe was covered in cream which was lovely and light and it was slightly sweetened but not too sweet.
In between the crepe layers there was delicious pieces of young coconut.
It reminds me of the buko pie but this one is nicer because it is not so sweet.
    BUKO PIE (coconut pie):
    http://static2.orstatic.com/UserPhoto/photo/2/24H/00F3Y986391E84B0435FFCm.jpg

On top the crepe there was a piece of water chestnut which was a bonus because I wanted to try the Tub Tim Krob Greyhound Style as well which has that in it.
Basically the waterchestnut had some gel covering it on the outside and it was colored red which definately tasted better than a cherry on top!
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
To try on my next visit:

    Tub Tim Krob Greyhound Style
Water chestnut with coconut sherbet and coconut meat topped with coconut cream

South East Asian Twist Just OK Aug 16, 2012

I went to the Greyhound Cafe at the IFC with three of my friends. We made a reservation and were promptly seated at our table without having to wait. The menu has a lot of different options, and I would probably go again to give some other things a try. The waiter seemed very confused when I was ordering, and did not seem familiar with the menu. I ordered in English, but he repeated everything to me in Cantonese, even though I just told him what number I wanted. Throughout our meal, we were sitting near the kitchen door, and the waiters kept dropping and breaking things. Our food came very quickly, but the table next to us had very slow service, and kept being brought the wrong order. Towards the end of our meal, another waiter spilled water all over our table. Luckily I dodged the waterfall quickly enough, but what was disappointing was no one came to wipe up the mess, or mop the floor. Luckily, this restaurant was saved from a disastrous review because the food was much better than the service.

A fantastic combination, and not too heavy. A must try.

This apple crumble had more crumble than apple, which I personally believe is the best part. Although some of the crumble did not actually crumble in your mouth, it was more like an overcooked cookie. However, I found this a refreshing take on a classic dessert.

Overall, I had a good evening chumming with my friends. The service leaves a lot to be desired, but I will come back to give some other dishes a whirl.

A special thai style cafe!!!! Smile Jul 21, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I went to greyhound this thursday.
First, the decor of the restaurant is well arranged and full of feelings, really like it a lot.shocked

we ordered 5 courses, 4 special drinks, and 2 desserts.

First, salmon with thai style spicy sause. Its really a appetizing course. And the salmon is really fresh.

Second, Yum Japanese Seaweed with glass noodle,
its also a little bit spicy, but taste fresh!!!!

Third one, is greyhound famous chicken wings.
The chincken wings are cutted half into single bond, which make it easy to eat. And it wont make my face dirty.

Forth, (i dont exeactly remember the name) , Fried pork with bean starch sheets.
Its my favourite, special and delighful.

Fifth, pita pizza sea food stuffing, it's different from "pizza XXT"'s pizza, i think it might be thai style pizza, it's worth to have a try.

I ordered greyhound style iced lemon tea, its the best lemon tea i ever drunk.
The lemon extraction settle at the bottom of the glass, and the ice is made by lemon tea, so even when the ice melts, the flavour will not be diluted. When your stirr the drinks, the taste of lemon extraction mix with lemon tea, and ice, the taste and the temperature is good fit. The sugar balances the tartness of lemons and its not over.

Then the most surprising is the dessert!!!
    I love all of them.
    - Fresh coconut crepe cake !!! - It is a delightful combination of taste and textures playing off each other to create the experience you enjoy each time you eat it. it's a choice dessert!!!

-Apple Crumble!!! - It's sweeter than the fresh coconut crepe cake, but still very good. The apple crumble is served with custard (or cream???? )

I think i will encore again for sure.

Worst breakfast ever... Cries Jun 18, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Like one of the previous reviewers, I was "inspired" to register for open rice because of this restaurant. This is not inspirational in a warm and fuzzy kind of way.

The food was of an extremely poor standard and the price was high. Though I often feel overcharged in Hong Kong, here I felt robbed. In fairness to the cafe, this is supposedly a Thai-fusion place, and we were there eating western-style breakfast - though I would say that if you can't do it properly, then you probably shouldn't have it on the menu. My guess is that the reason they do has something to do with the passing tourist trade.

Myself and my partner both ordered the first breakfast option, which is a kind of English/American breakfast with juice and coffee included (150-ish each including service). To start with the positives: the juice was brilliant, both the grapefruit and the orange. It tasted fresh squeezed. Coffee was okay. For the food, the eggs were well cooked.

The bad: the portions were tiny and the ingredients were cheap. "Tomato" meant a piece of tomato about the size of your fingertip. "Mushrooms" meant 2-3 small mushrooms each. There wasn't that much bacon or sausage either, and the bacon was the nasty cheap streaky stuff. It was put in a bowl/pan on top of the plate to make it look bigger, but the pans kept slipping around making it almost impossible to eat, so we ended up tipping it onto the plate anyway...which meant you could see what you were getting better. But worst of all was the toast. I don't know why a restaurant charging so much thinks that they should be able to use the cheap bead that you buy at Wellcome. On top of that it was stale, overnight bread - really really bad. Wish we had taken pictures. Service was also pretty poor: some of the waiting staff were goofing around and ignored us when we had our hands in the air for water, and there were simple things missing like salt and pepper on the table.

We did complain, but when we asked to speak to the manager the waitress just said she would pass on the message. Nothing was offered in compensation and they did not reduce the bill.

Whatever you do, don't go here. If you want a good hearty breakfast, go to the Flying Pan. If you're happy with pastry, etc, go to the Simply Life opposite - it is so so much better.

Had dinner with a friend there and neither of us could understand why the waitresses have to be so rude. We ordered beef noodles to share and asked for it to be served in two separate bowls. The waitress asked why she couldn't just give us extra bowls for we to share ourselves like other people do. We asked for warm water when placing our food order but didn't get any water after two dishes were served so we asked again and the response was "just wait a moment, ok?"

The food was also quite mediocre. The rice that came with the pork skewers was very undercooked. The grilled vegetable salad was just a little stack of vegetables that was more like an overpriced entree than a main. Neither of us was particularly full after three dishes but we've had enough of the service and didn't want to pay for anything else at that place so went elsewhere instead for dessert. For what we paid we could definitely have had better food and service.

    Very disappointed!!   Apr 20, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
    Extremely rude and bad service!!

During reservation, they already told me that we would need to give back the table at 13h15 for a 12h booking - as they split lunch time into 2 main periods. The waitress who picked up the phone was so rude and arrogant!!

When we arrived, we wanted to ask them a question regarding to the menu, they nodded to our waving but then never came back!

The dishes are so small and aren't really worth the price! Also the taste wasn't special either. They way they presented the ice tea (for my friend) was nice, but my banana shake had no banana favour! sad

Once we finished our dishes, they dropped the bill on our table. We paid, without finishing the drink, the waiter (seemed to be the manager) came and spoke to us loudly that "do you want something else, do to want something else..."... I looked at the watch, it was only 12h50!! Not even 13h!! sad

I am so angry so decided to make my very first comment on openrice!!

    WILL NEVER GO BACK!!! huffy

We dined early (6pm) so getting a table was easy enough. The menu looked enticing, and had a variety of choices - though it would seem that Thai fusion was its main theme. We ordered a Caesar salad - which claimed to be their signature dish, spaghetti vongole; chicken wings and their wagyu burger. Caeser salad dressing was yellow french dressing with shavings of chedder cheese - not the usual white, eggy, anchovy , parmesean dressing as one expected. Portion was tiny. The vongole was not vongole at all. It was local clams, but they were all gritty. Unless you were on a diet or a three year old child like my son - you would have needed another portion. The manager reluctantly changed the dish for us. The dish was changed for the spaghetti with italian sausage. This turned out to be sliced german frankfurter sausages with a tomato basd sauce - again miniscule portions. The chicken wings were usual deep fried, which had no hint of the Thai spices / marinade that it claimed to have in its menu - nothing special. The wagyu burger was pretty standard and to be honest hard to get wrong. The only thing that they got right here were the fries - and these were frozen ones which were cooked to order . Burger was bland and not enticing at all - would have been better at Burger King!. The staff were polite enough, but service was very poor and they were ready to pounce as soon as they saw that your plate was nearly clear . Will not be coming back to this place any time soon.

    Bad service!  Mar 29, 2012

2nd time for lunch with a group of colleagues... Food not bad but service is as bad as the first visit. Food comes late. 30 min for bringing the water. Their only solution seems to be free dessert... Why don't they change their management tactics instead... I would not go back again- there are way many other places to go to in Hong Kong for good food and fast efficient friendly service.

Good Service but not food Just OK Mar 14, 2012

We wanted to have a quick bite at IFC before the movie and the location of the restaurant was very convenient.

Ordered: a tomato-based vegetable soup and a wagyu burger with fat fries
Soup with the bread: Have expected better bread to go with the soup, and both the soup and the bread were really average.sad
Burger with fries: Again the bread with the burger was not good quality, but to be fair, the quality of the wagyu burger was good.

Having said the above, the service at the restaurant was quite good.

I have heard so much about this restaurant and decided to give it a try (in fact two, first time on Kowloon side) and this time in IFC. Luckily I booked a table in advance and got seated right away.

    Drinks:
Ordered a lemongrass drink and a Longan iced tea. That busy (at least he thought so since he walked extremely fast) manager told me they might not have iced lemongrass drink so I said if he didn't have any cold one then gave me a hot one. Then when the longan tea arrived without my lemongrass drink, so I thought "ok probably he was too busy to tell me they ran out of lemongrass drink and too busy to arrange a hot one for me". Then suddenly in the middle of my meal, the iced lemon grass drink arrived. both drinks were okay but I would expect the manager could have told me whether they had the cold one or not.

    Food:
    steamed spring rolls - terriblemad
It looked terrible as the spring rolls wasn't tighly wrapped so it looked wobbly. When I ate it, the shredded pork was so dry and hard and it seemed that it was made at least 2 days ago.

Signature chicken wings - sooo drymad
This dish was supposed to be one of the not-to-be-missed items. The seasoning was very tasty and it was very crispy. BUT the inside was as dry as a chicken jerky! I believe the problem was becuase it was single-boned. The chicken wing became less meaty so the time of cooking was crucial. It became easily over-cooked and this happened both in Central and Kowloon shop.

Braised Beef Noodles - authentic Thai street food style
This was the best I had for the entire meal coz' it reminded of the delicious street food style beef noodles in Bangkok. The soup base was dark and made of Thai fish sauce and other spices, most importantly was a lot of deep-fried pork fat that made the soup smelt good. But as a healthy Hongkongers, I had no choice but picked all these fat out! The thin noodles texture was just cooked to perfect while the different kind of sauces came with the noodle was great too!

A good dining experience is composed of food, service and ambience while unfortunately the first two failed! I guess the money mianly went to the rent and the brand itself.
