Burns Day is more of a Scottish and then Irish celebration to commemorate the great Scottish Poet Robert Burns and is celebrated on his past birthday. Dickens Bar is naturally British but the kitchen has planned in advance to introduce a 1 night only Burns Supper night for the customers. Very thoughtful and this was to become my 2nd Scottish Burns Day celebration. Not that I can ever get sick of Lamb Haggis.

bowlScottish Burns Supper Haggis & Neeps – $198
There are no Tatties here but it was still all decent.. Haggis nowadays are mostly pre-prepared in a sauce casing and sold as is, rather than cooked in an actual lamb’s stomach. This was flavourful and slightly more gamier than my previous review. It was enjoyable. ~ 8.5/10

As we enter December, the city is feeling more festive than ever, and lovely decorations have sprung up all over the shopping malls and buildings in Hong Kong. This is the perfect time for a Christmassy gathering for me and my friends at the British gastro pub, Dickens Bar, in Causeway Bay.

Named after the English writer Charles Dickens, Dickens Bar is a long-standing establishment in the basement of Excelsior Hotel. A delightful selection of drinks and classic British dishes are offered, but what the bar is most famous for is the live broadcast of sporting events in the evening.

The food is rustic, down-to-earth and delicious, and a famous curry buffet lunch is also offered at $198 (weekday)/ $228 (weekend) per person (and at half price for children). It seems not such a bad idea at all to hit Dickens Bar at some point in winter!

(1) My friends and I were not entirely in the mood for fried food that day, but we felt that we could not leave a gastro pub without ordering some fish and chips, and we were right. The Beer battered fish and chips with salad and tartar sauce ($198) was brilliantly done – the batter was thick, crunchy and satisfying, and the fish was tender and juicy, just like how it should be. There was a generous serving of chips on the side, which were really tasty, and scarily not one of them was left uneaten…

(2) Another recommended dish is the Dickens Bar burger with smoked bacon, organic egg, cheese, pineapple, tomato, garden greens, crispy onion ring and side of chips ($188). The beautiful sunny side up immediately got our attention and made us feel really hungry. Instead of plain buns, the burger was sandwiched between cheese buns, which were scrumptious. The bacon was thick and wholesome, and what impressed us the most was the burger patty, which was incredibly fresh and full of natural beef flavours!

(3) Seeing that one of my favourite dishes, Confit duck leg with braised lentils and jus ($188), was on the menu, I couldn’t resist ordering it, but it turned out not to be as good as the other dishes. While the skin was gorgeously fried so that it was thin and crispy, the meat inside was on the dry side. The jus tasted all right, but the lentils were too soft and mushy.

(4) The BBQ short rib with buttery mash and green beans ($198) arrived last, and this dish exceeded our expectations. The short ribs were alluringly soft and tender, and the buttery mash was creamy and splendid.

(5) While the boys were busy drowning themselves in beer, the girls ordered the much more civilised Rekorderlig Strawberry Lime (Medium sweet cider 500ml, 4%, $56). A little sweet and not too alcoholic, Rekorderlig had a light, fruity strawberry taste and could just about go with any food that you order.

(6) How can a Christmas gathering feel complete without some hot mulled wine ($75)? This spiced, warming drink can also be ordered with unlimited refills at $190. I can see some thirsty faces amongst you…
Hot mulled wine ($75)

(7) If you are bored of iced lemon teas, the Peach & passion fruit tea ($44) is a good alternative. The peach and passion fruit taste was not too noticeable, but it was nice and not overly sweet.

I have been to Dickens Bar several times before for drinks with my friends, but this was the first time I had actually eaten there, and I was rather impressed with their hearty British pub food!

Previously I went before the renovation for the curry buffet, but it was only available on weekdays which was quite inconvenient.
Now it is available on Saturdays as well.

I was looking forward to the pork terrine but it wasnt there that day, but the roast potatoes were good and I was surprised they had the Philipino dessert {Brazo mercedse} which is meringe with some custard in the middle [The exact stuff I got from Quezon].

The muffins were also good as well.

All-you-can-eat Curry Buffet Smile Jun 03, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

Dickens Bar has been a long-time favourite among the English-style bars in Hong Kong. I have never been to Dickens Bar before, but knowing that it has been newly renovated I'd want to giveit a shot. Apparently what attracted me there wasn't the drinks, but its Curry Lunch Buffet which I got to know about in a magazine feature.

Dickens Bar (yes you're right, it's named after the great English writer Charles Dickens) is located at the lower ground floor of the hotel, but it is not difficult to locate. Walking down the classic wooden stairs as I entered the bar, I was greeted by its understated English flair that stood itself out from your ordinary watering hole, until...

I spotted some mispelt words on the menu!!!

The first thing I did afterwards was to go to the curry buffet table, where samosas, bajhi, pakora, popadoms, naan breads and Pilao rice are on offer, along with fish tikka, lamb, chicken and vegetable curries in copper pots. It was complete with raita and chutney. Pretty promising.

But then it was customary (for me least) to have some salad and appetisers first.

Here I was almost spoilt for choice with well not that many salads but also the classic British food like Pork Terrine encased in Short Crust Pastry, Spiked with Egg and served with Cornichons and Branston Pickle. It was like eggs wrapped in sausage and crust pastry, what a savoury treat but just that I couldn't have too much of it as it was rather filling. Salad is one of my favourite buffet items and I had a few trips of those, but on this particular plate pictured the anchovies all got stuck together and were very salty.

Then it was time to conquer the curry table.

I tried almost everything there, and surprisingly, I liked the fish tikka best as the curries suffere the same problem of being too salty. Nevertheless the naan breads and Pilao rice were nice.

As I don't eat beef I didn't get to try the carving station.

I am never a big fan of hot dishes at buffets. But if you see Pan Seared Barramundi the fish's worth trying if the buttery sauce isn't an issue for you. The mushroom soup was, well, again too salty. So they suppose people to wash all this down with a couple of beers?

Instead I wanted to try the wines from the 'vending machines' for sip-sized tasting portions but at the time of my visit (mid-April) the machine was not available for use yet.

Apart from this slight disappointment, the dessert table at least gave me a small pick-up.
Caramalised Banana Éclair - the éclair was too biscuit-like in texture, not that good.
Cardamom Crème Brûlée - not very spicy, okay as a ordinary crème brûlée.
Almond Charlotte - almondly and moist, one of the best of the day.
Poached Pear on Shortbread - eaten separately better than together.
Ricotta Cream Cone - cone pastry was too hard.

Citrus Jelly Terrine - more like jelly than 'terrine', a refreshing treat.
Cherry Clafoutis - a French dessert similar to bread pudding, it was dark cherries baked in a pancake batter, served with vanilla custard sauce. Soft, moist, sweet and juicy, I was fortunate to have saved the best dessert till the last.

After all this was a good deal for a casual pub lunch at $198+10% (as at time time of visit), and I hope to try out more of its pub food items in the near future.

之前最喜歡的英式吧, 有東方文華嘅 The Chinnery, 也不錯吃的 The Globe, 同水準下降了些的 The Pawn Living Room - 但現在 Dickens Bar 也終於成為了香港內, 幾罕有的正宗英國 Pub 份子之一.

bowlMany Draught Beers on tap and bottled Specialty Beers are available here -
The overall choice seems to have grown substantially from before, especially the rarer to find British and Belgian beers. If you're a beer lover this comes highly recommended with their newly expanded list.

.

bowlPork Rillettes en croute with Spiced Chutney -
This is the Canapes version, which is smaller and not really served en croute in pastry, but the rillette was still quite fresh in pork taste and very well made, pairing well with the sweet and spicy chutney condiment. lol 9/10

.

bowlMixed Beans Quesadilla & Chicken Quesadilla -
The canape sized bites once again, are a little different to the normal flatter versions, which they serve as a la carte here with Mexican influence. The taste of these were pretty good with big chunky pieces of meat and a good tortilla wrap. 8/10

.

bowlCumberland Sausage with Onion Jam, Mash and Mustard Jus -
The normal serving size will be that recognizable long and curled sausage of course. This tasted fine but could have had more mustard jus in my personal opinion... 7/10

,

bowlPrawn Croquettes with Preserved Lemon and Harissa Mayonnaise -
Just the recipe itself sounded very intriguing. When this arrived, I thought it was fried well but there wasn't too much prawns taste, especially when comparing with Bubba Gump's prawns. The slightly tangy and spicy mayo was very good however and overall could be even more balanced! 6.5/10

.

bowlBeer Battered Cod and Chips with Tartar Sauce -
This is again the smaller version, but I was a little baffled by the fact that these carried a bread crumbs like external, rather than a real batter coating which is smoother and fried batter like. The tartar/tartare sauce was a bit lacking in pickles and eggs taste too. I think they could really improve on this dish as a Beer Battered Fish and Chips dish is how everyone judges British pub food these days! It could also do with some mushy peas infused with mint, and a better tartar sauce! 6/10

.

bowlOrganic Beef Burger with Hot English Mayonnaise, Tomato Chutney w Chips -
The chips were really good and hot fluffy. The burger bun had a cheesy top, which was also unique and delicious. The beef patty became the centre of a debate subject - it carried too little grill marks and caramelization and looked a bit pale, like it was cooked on too-low a heat. mad On the other hand, the beef taste was quite excellent and appreciated. All they need to do is darken it a bit more on the surface which shall give it that extra flame-grilled aroma. smile 6.9/10

.

bowlConfit Duck Leg with Braised Lentils and Jus -
At only $188 a pop this is good value for money, as the duck confit was cooked really spot on well and the lentils absorbed the duck jus, making this a very complete dish in harmony! The duck skin was slightly crispy and overall wasn't too salty or dried, it was very well balanced. The dish of the night for me. 8.5/10

.

.bowlIndian Chicken Bhuna - Served with Rice, Naan, Raita and Chutney -
Dickens Bar has always been famous for their curries and curry buffets. With the recruitment of an Indian Chef looking after this department they are into safe hands here. Importing in exotic ingredients such as Indian black salt to cook their curries, curries are an essential staple in any British pub but you can't seemingly find it much in other places except The Chinnery, the saffron rice is nice and fluffy here with a decent herbs and spices taste. The Chicken Bhuna is tender and can be cooked even more richer to bring out its best! 7/10

.

bowlLemon and Lime Tart with Limoncello Sorbet and Roasted Macadamias -
This came looking surprisingly smart in presentation for a Gastro Pub's dessert, and at $68 sounded like a bargain. The slightly alcoholic Limoncello sorbet was fantastic and a novelty. The Lemon Tart's pastry crust is the thinner type, and the lemon and lime curd was refreshing yet balanced. A good tart indeed and more curd like than some others in town. 7/10

.

bowlChocolate Slice with Strawberry Compote and Frangelico Cream -
Another promising recipe on paper, and it turned out to be even better than the tart above. The chocolate slice was truffle-cake like in texture and rich enough in chocolate flavours. It worked with the strawberry compote. I could certainly do with more of that Frangelico cream !! 8/10

******************************
The Beer selection was fantastic for Hong Kong's pub standards. The Food recipes are approachable but modernised British pub grub and quite promisin, although some of the described flavours weren't too apparent in the end result, but we will have to re-try some dishes at the normal portions to know. Thanks for the Invitation indeed, and we look forward to receiving quality British gastro pub food in the future, and many more great curries!

Dicken’s bar reminded me of The Canny Man when I went down the stairs.

I came to this place especially for the Indian curry buffet, which is sadly only available on weekdays.
Surprisingly even on a Monday there were many reservations.

Set out like the typical gastropubs in Hong Kong, they also had carriage seating similar to the Canny Man, but I felt the carriage seating at the Canny Man was done up nicer.

The staffs there were very attentive and the patrons were well dressed.

The lunch buffet costs $168 per person including a soft drink.
It has the usual salads and breads.

The soup of the day was Beef Goulash.
Similar to Delaney’s they had a carvery there with roast potatoes.
As well as curry I was there for the Fish and Chips, the chips need to be specially requested.
The chips were not bad, crisp and golden on the outside and liquid in the middle.

The curry was good as expected with the accompanying naan breads, raita, cucumber sauce and yogurt.

There was my favourite tandoori chicken and pakora.
The beef goulash soup was really good too, it tasted like chili con carne with juicy beef cubes in it.

The Indian tomato soup was nice with a hint of spice.

Dessert was also good too. I wish I had tried everything.
I ended up trying the carrot cake, which was moist and not too sweet.

Then I tried the pudding, which was rich and creamy and tasted better than I expected.

The pudding had a physalis berry which I have never tried before and that tasted good too, it was similar to a tomato but with a slight bitterness and many tiny seeds inside.

Monster Burgers! Smile Sep 29, 2011

Great British style sports pub serving up pub favorites. Was in the mood for a burger and my friend recommended that we try the burger at Dicken's. It was a large bar with your traditional large TVs, dark wood and green walls. Filled with mostly visitors and single businessmen, we were greeted with peaunts and a large and impressive tap beer menu. Love that they have happy hour prices on booze until 8pm weekdays.

Decided to indulge on a burger. This burger was MASSIVE. It had a juicy patty, topped with lettuce, tomato, garlic aioli, beet root, cheese, bacon and a fried egg. Not to mention a side of french fries. It was delicious and quite difficult to eat, however very satisfying. My only compliant on the burger was that the patty could have used some salt or seasoning to enhance the entire burger.

After our 1500 caloric meal, we were then surprised with a serving of bread pudding, which was warm and a nice touch.

Will def. be back for sports games and the happy hour beers, hopefully trying out the fish n chips (which looked great!)

Quite good Smile Aug 21, 2011

I'm writing reviews for 2 separate visits - 1 is curry buffet lunch and the other 1 is for dinner.

Curry buffet lunchchopstick - great if you like curry; kind of terrible if you don't tongue There's chicken curry, fish curry (although mostly just potatoes..), beef curry, vegetables curry. There are also some naan and papadaum, and of course some chutney and different sauces on the side. There was also some sauteed veggies and a very brief salad bar that's needless to mention. Some desserts on the side but nothing impressive. For the price and location I'd see it's pretty decent.

For dinner / drinks - they have quite an extensive drinks list. Asahi was $52 for a pint, promotion. For food they have some traditional English items like ploughman's platter, english full breakfast etc. Sorry just don't appreciate black pudding personally..

Anyway the garlic fries was really quite garlicky smile The full breakfast was pretty decent. The spare-ribs was OK, as the sauce was a bit too sweet. The salad "nicoise" is alright, and when they say it's with a small salad it's really with a small salad..... the tuna steak is given as a whole, not sliced. But I was satisfied as I wanted something light with the salad.

Staff are courteous enough. Oh!! Forgot to mention the free dessert that comes with, the bread pudding. It was pretty decent given it's free and it's nice and warm and not overly sweet. smile

Curry Lunch Buffet Just OK May 27, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
The Curry Lunch Buffet at the Dickens Bar is pretty fantastic. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera so I was unable to snap photos. The lunch buffet runs on Tuesdays and is $158 per head for all you can eat salad, soups, curry and dessert. There was a delicious and perfectly executed Chicken Masala available as well as a Vegetable Korma and Lamb Curry. Naan and rice and all the Indian condiments were provided. The salad bar included a choice between romain or mixed greens and some basic dressings as well as some delicious smoked salmon. There were two soups offered, both Indian in origin. Overall, this was a fantastic lunch buffet, maybe a little pricy though. I was disappointed that no paneer options were offered (but thats just because I love paneer.) Considering that one order of Indian food is plenty for one person and is a third of the buffet price, I would suggest only going if you're really hungry or want the option of a full 4 course meal.

Great Sunday Lunch Smile Jan 24, 2011

We were looking for a taste of home and craved a roast dinner.

Although this is a sports bar it didnt have that usual construction male dominated feel with many families and groups of men and women enjoying a their sunday afternoon.

Roast Dinner was buffet style with lots of options if you do not want roast meat. A great wine selection and guiness on tap!

Sport + Sunday Lunch and Sunday papers = Fab!

Went back to Dickens while we had crave for Indian curry.
Dicken's bar has been always famous for producing Indian curry and English fish & chips. The chips would be available only 'upon request'.

The variety of the buffet was okay, you would be given choices of salad bar, 2 types of soups, smoked salmons, desert corner - English deserts and fruit platter.
The famous Indian curry, the grilled Ham, fish and chips, and few other hot plates including Indian nann bread, Indian yellow rice, assorted vegetibles...
Overall the quality was well maintained, not bad.
I particularly like the smoked salmon, the grilled ham, fish and chips and curry corners.
For those that have not tried this English bar with history, you should try it ! smile

Dicken's serves authentic British-styled-Indian curry. The taste of the curry is exactly what you can eat in the UK. The environment is also very British. You can always hear people speaking with Scottish and Irish accents. A rare place in Hong Kong.

The service is good, waiters are quite polite and attentive. \r
\nEnvironment is good! Tables are not too close.\r
\nPrice is reasonable as in Causeway Bay.\r
\nI especially want to introduce their lunch curry buffet. It's really good and of good price. Only $98per person with a complementary drink. The food taste good and curry won't make you feel thirsty.\r
\nGo to try it!
