Great Dining experience Smile Apr 27, 2013
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
We made a reservation last week for the dinner at mortons, the resturant made kind phone reminder in thursday and friday morning which is very considerate.

When arrving at the lounge, it seems some kind of party was going on in the bar which made me a little bit concerned about the environment, but it turned out to be I worried too much. The service is not pushing at all and the waiter carefully explained the dish we want to know friendly and patiently.

    We ordered: Ahi-tuna tower, Prime rib-eye, fresh/medium 16oz, chocolate cake. Cosmopolitan/mojito.

The onion loaf, I'd say, looks better than the taste. Of course I didn't meant that taste bad or something, just nothing special, the bread goes well with the butter.

Ahi tuna tower: mixed with avocado, tomatoes and sauces, serving with corn crisp. Great presentation, the ahi-tuna is very fresh and tender, no gross fish-y smell or taste at all. The dish was light but not bland, pretty well seasoned and just melt in my mouth. Full mark for appetizer.

Rib-eye steak: Well seasoned, not even slightly overcooked or undercooked, just like a textbook medium steak should be - rose-pink in the middle, light brown on the side and well grilled on the surface. The steak is tender and juicy, the side-dish grilled asparagus is seasoned with balsamic vinegar and some spices, also well-seasoned, not overcooked soft feeling, another full mark.

The dessert is not surprisingly good, but could certainly be called an outstanding chocolate cake, melt in the middle and served with ice-cream. One drawback is the cake may be too sweet for someone, of course this is a nicklepick, but I hope the less sweetness would be better.

Cocktails: It could be see that they're made by someone who knows how to shake cocktails, Lime in cosmo which lots of bartender forgets, the mintleave in mojito tastes fresh.

One more addition the service is very good, tables and dished always cleaned in time and the manager would care about the customers food, very brilliant dining experience and the price is not ridiculus, I'm pretty sure I would go back again next month.

An overpriced disappointment Cries Nov 30, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

Service: smile Friendly, professional, attentive and timely
Atmosphere: sad The dining room is dark and unexceptional. Definitely not romantic if you're looking for that. I would have given the atmosphere a better rating, except that two Western businessmen, apparently staying at the Sheraton hotel, showed up in shorts for dinner! Isn't there a dress code? The sound level was OK.
Food: Be prepared for American size portions. The four of us each ordered a set meal: one filet mignon, one ribeye, two sirloins. While the vegetables were OK but unremarkable, the steaks were a huge disappointment. Ruth's Chris and Wooloomooloo steakhouse are much better for less cost. My steak was relatively tasteless, and it was a chore to eat half of it.
Cost: The total for the four of us was around HK$5000, including service charge, a bottle of wine and a round of drinks before our meal. That overall cost was the insult added to the injury of the disappointing steaks.
Less learned: I now buy steaks at City Super or Great, marinate them, and grill them outside. Better taste, more relaxing, happier family and better atmosphere at less than 20% of the cost. Morton's never again!

    Hi all,

I was there yesterday for dinner, the place is great. Nice and comfortable dining area by the window overlooking the nightview of Victoria Harbour. It's really something! The service is excellent as well. The staff are very polite and very professional.

One downside overall is the food. The Morton's salad is very very ordinary (I think we can get better greens from citysuper) The crabcake is very cool and tasty though. But The Steak we ordered are not as good as expected. We order the Double fillet Mignon and the Ribeye, I don't think the quality of the steaks deserves $600+ per piece.

The overall impression is good. But I don't think I would recommend. smile

Excellent Steaks Smile May 24, 2010

Morton's of Chicago is dim. Possibly one of the darkest restaurants in town. Some may find it romantic; your reviewer simply found it difficult to read the menus by flickering candlelight. Morton's does feature waiters who recite the daily specials together with the different cuts of beef you might order, but strangely many of the waiters are not locals and speak English with such a heavy accent as to render them totally unintelligible.

But no matter. You visit Morton's for the steaks, and they are excellent.

We started off with soup. The lobster bisque is recommended, strong but not overpowering, with just the right amount of cognac accent. Baked onion soup was sub-par, with so much cheese and so little onion that it might as well have been baked cheese soup with the occasional vegetable.

The trademark onion bread, however, was delicious. Crispy and warm, although the lack of butter knives was unusual.

Side dishes were prepared well. Our Morton's house salad featured extremely crisp greens sprinkled with blue cheese sauce, while the grilled asparagus and sauteed onions were both done just right, shot through evenly with flavor.

The steaks. Better than Lawry's (HK), and certainly better than Morton's (CT, USA). My New York strip steak, cooked medium rare, was slightly charred on the outside, but red and full of jus on the inside - a combination managed only by a few steakhouses. Portions are massive, so do take a second look at the "smaller cut" selections offered. Take note that a lot of the cuts are aged for a few weeks, so they are that much more heavy.

Like the soups, the desserts were a little hit-and-miss. The Grand Marnier souffle is huge, fluffy and sparkling. The cream deserves a special mention - whipped smooth and shaded with vanilla. But the apple pie was a disappointment, a tiny mushy circle of crust carelessly splattered with a plateful of cooked apple.

Morton's, as well as the Steakhouse across the street, serve some of the best steaks in Hong Kong. The Steakhouse can be noisy, and is suitable for a larger party (4+). For smaller groups, especially couples who would do well to request a window seat, Morton's fits the bill nicely.

US Fine Dining  Smile Sep 18, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Morton's is a place of indulgence and romance, US style.
Visited this restaurant a few times. Not a single case of disappointment. When youare seated, you will be shown a huge plate with everything raw, including raw rib eye, lobster, and sirloin of a proportion familiar to Americans (i.e. big). You will be served big bread.
My favourite is prime rib. It is one of the finest quality in town, better than Lawry's. But Morton's is still fine dining the US style, and that means there are not many courses, not many dishes, not many decorative things on your dish, few ornaments, but just plain freshness served with a heart. I would imagine a farm house setting would make diners feel more at home. Perhaps the decor of a dining room in a country ranch, where one can hear horses squealing outside, can transport people to the mid-West.
The restaurant commands a nice view of the harbour, though New World Centre is an inconvenient block. Waiters are nice and attentive and I have no complaints.
The menu has a lot to choose from, but steak is still its best. Many foreigners at Mortons' eat big chunks of steak, washing them down with the exquisite set of wines in stock.

It was our first visit because I personally don't like beef much but we decided to go somewhere have not been before. Disappointed that we couldn't get a window seat as requested and I failed to understand why 80% of the window seats were occupied by foreigners.
Since we had a heavy and late lunch in見城, we only ordered one lobster and one steak. The lobster was fresh one and 3 lb ($400 per lb), they cut it into half and baked with cheese and butter. Quite nice - supposed to since it is fresh.
Steak – I told the waitress that I had no idea about steak and wanted something lean, she recommended one (forget the name) with medium rare plus, honestly, I don’t know there are medium rare plus. But the output was like medium well to well done. The quality of the meat was good but overcooked. Creame brulee was too sweet and the layer of suger was too thick.
Wine – $ for new world wine is reasonable, we ordered a Margaret River Chardonnay at $380, later two glasses of Merlot as recommended by the waitress.
Service – The service there is very good, personally think the service is better than Oyster Bar upstairs and Unkai downstairs though not comparable to Mandarin Grill. The waitress served us was very polite and patience despite I was a bit rude and 面黑 at the beginning because of the seating arrangement.
Accommodation – it was too crowded, they should at lease reduce one row tables.

disappointing and overrated Cries Jun 28, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
We came here because of friend's recommendation. We were told the Crab Cake and Chocolate Larva Cake were "must-try". As it turns out, those 2 were the only dishes worth mentioning. It is rather sad, given that it is a steak house afterall, and supposedly one of the best in town.

We ordered Cajun Steak, which is just alright, the meat is juicy, but the skins are quite dry and it smell like overcooked.

The Prime Rib (Boneless) is well below par. I don't have a clue how they justified such a big portion for a prime rib (22oz). You know prime rib doesn't come grilled and taste is minimal. We had it medium rare but the tender is all over the place. We had to waste half of the portion because it is too raw to eat. We believe outback and ruth's chris have better quality if not quantity. But who cares about quantity if it tastes awful.

The rest of the price has gone to the service and red wine we ordered. It is too crowded as well.

Not impressed at all Just OK Apr 22, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
It's my first time to Morton's and I heard a lot of good words about this steak house. I am sorry to say that their food quality is not up to standard given the price they charge!

We started with the "onion dome bread" (as usual to all the diners)...I have exceptionally high expectation on this bread due to the fact that everyone complimented it here. However, I found the taste of the bread to be very ordinary...the regular baguette probably tastes the same or even better...personally, I prefer the homemade olive bread.

Then, the 3 of us ordered the following dishes:

    1) Canjun New York steak (20oz) - medium
*** Big Tony (a 6' 5" American guy) ordered this one and I tried a slice...the presentation is awesome and the taste is up to standard. I believe this steak is the best among the 3 we ordered

    2) Fillet Mignon single cut (medium rare)
*** Sorry to say that I am very disappointed with the texture of this Fillet Mignon...very chewy and rough. The one that I had in Bostonian (yep, a seafood house, can't you believe it?) a month ago tasted way better than this one and the price is half.
*** I ate quite some bread to start off...I was stuffed when my steak arrived so I just splitted it among ourselves, tried 2 slices and piggy bag the rest tongue

    3) Prime rib (medium rare)
*** My gosh, the portion is very big...double the size I had when I was back in Canada...my 5'10" friend couldn't finish it...I tried a slice and it's so-so but just BIG

    4) Tomato salad in blue cheese dressing - Big Tony said this is his favorite dish...sorry no pic cos he finished it too quickly
    5) Sauteed button mushroom - unbelievable lol
    6) Asparagus - Not bad smile
    7) Steamed Broccoli with Hollandaise sauce - it's broccoli after all smile
    8) Mashed potato - forgot to take pic and I was too full to try it yet my 2 friends said it's delicious tongue
    9) A bottle of Australian red - good choice shocked

In a nutshell, the overall dining experience was good but pls don't expect too much. The signature steaks are just up to standard and I am very picky in steaks...I'd rather go for the quality than the quantity of food.
    Onion bread - OK la...

    dinner on 12.Apr.2009 Cries Apr 13, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
well, after making the reservation i had very much expectation of my very first visit to this steak house. all in all this is one of the most popular - and expensive - steak houses in hk, i was looking forward to enjoying a delicious feast.

together with two buddies we shared:

chopstick onion bread - good! very hot and yummy!!!!

chopstick (chilled) ocean platter for two - oysters, crab legs, crab / shrimp meat, shrimp, etc presented on a large plate of ice. presentation was good and taste-wise good as well - they were fresh, a very good starter to kick off tonite's dinner.

chopstick crab cake - i have to say this was the best i've ever tried till now. unlike those made by the IC steak house or ruth chris which you can tell the cake is mixed with a lot of batter, this one was 100% made of crab meat, you couldn't find anything except for large pieces of crab meat. pan-fried to the just right crispiness outside, it's full of crab favor and nothing else. the best one in town!

with quality starter and appetizer, we anticipated great main courses as well - which, i have to say it's a nightmare....

chopstick (US) rib eye - ordered medium rare and it's cooked right to medium rare, with hot and red inside. the outside was very dry, coarse and rough. and it's chewy, not tender enough - i really couldn't accept, talking of a piece of prime grade rib eye at this grade of restaurant, would let me chew chew chew and still couldn't swallow and have to spit out the residues (有根)... outside, it's dry like 柴皮, inside, it's 有根. talking of taste, fairly amt of beef aroma but not very impressive. sometimes when i am lucky enough i can have something even better in dan ryan!!! an extremely disappointing rib eye. i am a meat lover, and this was the first time i couldn't finish it - no one was interested to finish the last piece....

chopstick (US) prime rib - i have to say, personally i dislike prime rib, i love those grilled steaks. but this one was terrible. it's really really BIG - a large piece of meat with one inch's thickness. so it was like a big piece of steamed meat (you know for prime rib, no sauce, no seasoning); taste? tasted like my mother's steamed pork. and again, 有根.... for lawry's, i know i don't like this style of cooking, but still, lawry's is tender and juicy. this one, failed in both texture and favor. really terrible experience.

chopstick chocolate cake - not good. not very flowing centre, just so-so.

services were up to standard, very attentive.

but i was very disappointed of the food... it calls itself a steak house, huh?

my ranking is: ruth chris > IC steak house > morton

and if go for something cheaper dan ryan is a good choice.

won't come back again, no way!

Bday dinner 21/11/08~ Just OK Nov 22, 2008
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Went there for celebrating my bf's bday last night. After we settled down at our table, the server took around 7-8 minutes to introduce the food but we couldn't recall much she said because she spoke with heavy accent and too quickly. We shared the following:-

    1) Baked Ocean Platter
    2) Ribeye
    3) Side dish - hash brown
Free complimentary dessert - hot chocolate cake

Food quality was ok, except that one of the oysters in the platter gone bad. We told our server about that and she said she would escalate it to her manager. Yet we did not receive any feedback from her or her manager afterwards. The ribeye tasted not bad but we think it doesn't really worth the price it charged.

Hygiene could be improved. When the server cleaned up the table, she used a plastic utensil to scratch the left over food off the edge of our table and nearly dropped the food onto my bf's jeans. That was quite unpleasant. mad

Other than that, the service was quite good and we both think it makes a great place for celebrations / special occasions. We were offered a free complimentary dessert, a framed picture signed by all staffs, and menus with customized greetings printed on them. Overall we had a sweet dinner~ smile

one of the best steak that i've had so far, not in terms of the quality, as i came from australia and easily able to get a hold of the high quality steaks, what really impressed me was the way of how it's been cooked, i asked for a medium ribeye steak, they actually gave me a medium cooked staek, nicely grilled outside while the middle was still red... that was not the first steak that i've had, but i could call it one of the best. my mates was also impressed with the steak.
however tho, i also had the lobster bisque, it was not what i expected from a fine dinning restarurant. the soup was not creamy to begin with, and also that the taste of wine was too heavy.
the lectures in my ceaser salad was abit bitter
in terms of the service, it would be much apprecaited if the waiter is able to learn how to pronounce before he puts on the show of "introducing" the menu, we were all trying to understand what he said.
the overall service was good, however when the waiter/waitress was not serving people, they just stood aside and chat, in which is something that wouldn't be expected from a 5 star dinning, to make it worse, one of the chef was talking and chewing some kind of food at the same time... not a very nice view...

PS. the complimentary bread was great! havn't had that since i left australia

this is our first time to go Morton's. the environment was not as good as i have expected. it's a bit crowded.
we have ordered Lobster bisque and Crab cake first. the lobster bisque is ok and a bit spicy. Crab cake was VERY VERY good.
for the maincourse, we chose Prime rib, it's good, but just too large for two people. we have also ordered spinach and hashbrown as sidedishes..both are them are just ordinary. i would say the hashbrown is Too crispy, i would perfer those in Mcdonald. and we didn't have any dessert, since we were full. overall i would say Morton's is good. but i would prefer Ruth...... more!!

I went there back in Oct as a b-day dinner, which was just the place to be for a nice meal. Menus were specially printed with greetings for my b-day!

Our meal started with a shared crabcake, lots of fresh chucks from it. This crabcake won somesort of awards in New Orleans.

For main course, I ordered a steak, which was done to perfection, and I daresay it's the closest thing compared to Alberta (my home town). My steak was rarely done right, to my unique taste of rare/blue. My dinner buddy had a piece of tuna, which was also excellent.

Best to wrap up, is their 'surprise' birthday cake at the end of dinner, the so-so song singing. But to my surprise, they took a polaroid straight away, and attached to a Morton's Frame as your souveniar.

Overall, good environment for dinner. However, a bit noisy considering a full house even on a Monday nite. And their waiteress tend to overly focus on those forign customers rather than treating us fairly. During my 3 hrs meal, I notice that no Asian were ever placed by the window seat, but are all served Evian bottles compared to my glassed water. I could afford a bottle too, but why was I never asked? (although I bet those foreigners were never asked neither).

Recently, I went there to hv dinner. Most of people is non-chinese. Also, the waiter speaks English to introduce the today special food. I think we need to practise the English before ordering. I hv tried the Ribeye. The taste is so good & so juicy... that's great! My friend order the lobster, it was bad and soft. Also, the bread is so hot & soft..wonderful. But the price is so expensive. The view is good and we can see the laser show but due to the floor is 4th, I think it will be better if the floor is higher.
