Best German in town  Oct 05, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Ok, I've been to two other German restaurants in town and so I conclude this to be the best!!

The barrels offers something of a dining experience - you have to call up to reserve one, as you imagine, they get taken pretty quickly!!

The food is nice, and filling! It has flavour, and even their desserts taste good when the waiter convinced us on the talent of their dessert chef!

I've been several times now - for birthdays, mother's day etc. and it never fails to impress! As a must - order their sausage meals with a German beer smile
ambience ~!! need to call up to reserve barrels!

A surprise birthday dinner for my friend.

    The food was average:

Sausage Platter A nice selection of 4 different sausages served with Potato Salad.

Pork Escaloupe with Pepper Sauce Average escaloupe, a little greasy. Pepper sauce was ok, quite sweet. served with fries and side salad.

Food must have been very salty as myself and my friends felt terribly thirsty for the remainder of the night.

    The service was terrible:

    Happy Hour

Happy Hour finishes at 8pm, my friends arrived at 7:55pm and asked to order drinks. When they asked to confirm it was still Happy Hour the waitress told them, "No, I'm sorry, Happy Hour has finished now". It was 7:55pm. After remind her of the time and the time happy hour finishes she said ok you can order one drink. Not one drink per person at the table (that would have been fair enough). She meant that only one person could order a drink that would be counted as happy hour. Ridiculous. After, disagreeing and asking to see the manager she finally relented and allowed us to order our happy hour drinks.

If you want Happy Hour to finish at 7:55pm, don't write 8pm on the menu.

    Cockney Rhyming Slang

This wasn't really bad service, just a funny thing that happened. My friend said the waitress "Can we order? she said yes and walked away, strange. She returned a minute late with a glass of "Soda Water"

    Know your sausages?
Waitresses seemed to have no knowledge of the differences between different types of sausage, this made ordering quite difficult as some of our party weren't familiar with the different german varieties of sausage.

    Birthday Cake Fiasco

A birthday cake was taken to the restaurant the day before in preparation. After, finishing dinner we quietly asked the waitress if they could bring out the cake. There several problems:

    - It took them about 20mins to bring the cake out.

-They brought the plates and forks out before the cake, good way to spoil the surprise of a birthday cake!

    - THEY DIDN'T LIGHT THE CANDLES The cake came out, noone had lit the candles. They had the decency to give us a lighter so we could light them ourselves, the my friend had to sit there for 5 mins watching as we lit the candles on his surprise cake!

At least the beer was fine  Cries Dec 29, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
That you can’t expect real German food in HK is for sure but unfortunately “Biergarten” not even came close to it.

    Roast Pork Knuckle:

First of all it was already cold as it arrived at the table. The meat was in comparison to other German restaurants in HK not too salty what is still fine. But it was dry and the skin was rather charred than crispy. The Sauerkraut (pickled cabbage) and mashed potatoes were acceptable but nothing special.

    Sauerbraten (Marinated Beef):

The Sauerbraten was cold as the pork knuckle and to our disappointment even more dry. Unfortunately you couldn’t get really rid of the dry something in your mouth as the so called “gravy” wasn’t good either. It was more like a watery soup and a rich taste was totally missing. The potatoes were tasteless and soaked with water. Unappetizing was also the red cabbage which might just came out of a can direct on the plate and wasn’t cooked without any other ingredients to enhance the flavor at least a little bit.

    Drinks:

They got few good German beers there which are just a bit too pricey after the happy hour.

    Service & Environment:

The waiters were very kind and courteously and the environment was quite cozy.

    All in all:

I would say that I might come back for a happy hour beer. So far I can’t really tell if the chef just had a bad day but I probably wouldn’t order a main dish there anymore as I would expect much more for around HK$ 430.

    Pig's knuckle Just OK Aug 19, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Went there by myself on Monday, wants to try roast pig knuckle, and their house brew.

Ordered the pig's knuckle, very large portion. However, it was overcooked and charred. Further, it is not as crispy as that of King Ludwig.

The house brew beer has nothing special.

I ended up paying something like $250.

A Cozy German Bar for Smokers Smile Mar 02, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Just off a MTR exit in TST is this little restaurant where one can get nice German food and beer. It is also a fun place to go for a quick beer and snack. The atmosphere is down to earth and smoking is allowed in the restaurant, which non-smokers may find it a turn off. I particularly liked the crispy pork knuckle, which goes so well with sauerkraut and mashed or fried potatoes. There is also a good selection of authentic German sausages. The servers are efficient. Definitely worth visiting again.
