Atmosphere and decor are really good, you would feel like you were entering a restaurant in some western country.
Staff were quite friendly, but not smiley... (i prefer smiles)
They did not really greet you like how they do it in the U.S.
But you can find the best potato skins here - crispy, not having too much potato on the skins.
The thing about potato skins is that they cannot be thick, otherwise, it would be like eating baked potatoes. shockedshockedshocked
So... Dan Ryan's got the perfect texture. nomnomnom tongue

We didn't have to wait because we booked table. Usually a lot of people and need to wait if no booking in advance.

I highly recommend the Chicken Caesar Salad. It taste really good, the sauce and vegetable is very fresh and balanced, well mixed by the Chef.

The soup was not so good, very watery.

    Overall the meal is okay.

Huge Portions Smile Apr 18, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Came to Dan ryans with no reservation wait time was approx 5 minutes

I ordered the Ciopinno Half size order. When it arrived it was huge. I wonder what the Full size would have looked like.

The seafood was cooked deliciously and the broth was very good.

The free bread and muffin are tasty especially the muffin! I love that its made fresh.

We also ordered the chicken and ribs and again portion size was big had to get a take-away box.

I think the price is very reasonable for the portion you are getting.

The service was okay, I always find that its quite busy.

This is a restaurant that I always return back to.

My husband and I ordered caeser Salad and sausage cube butterfly pasta.
Their portion is as big as usual.
Their free beard and muffin is hot and tasty.
The caesar salad is fresh with crispy crouton. The caesar sauce in the salad is good. Think they put mustard.
The sausage cube butterfly pasta is slight spicy. I was disappointed since it was not mentioned on the menu. The spicy favor may have come from the sausage or they put pepper. Not sure. Other than spicy, the pasta was cooked properly and tasted good.
Seldom order their steak, so no comment.

It was the second time for my friend and I to dine at Dan Ryan's for dinner. Generally the food were quite awesome with an American MENU. However, we never learnt the moral of the story as the dishes were served in American portions, and bravely we always ordered at least three to four dishes in total..and we ended up bloated and leaving bits and pieces everywhere. This time, history repeated. We ended up ordering more than we could eat... having us left with two take-away bags on our hands when we left.
    Onion Rings
    Onion Rings

bowl Onion Rings: I didn't quite like the Onion Rings to be honest. Although I could taste the onions inside, the outer layer of breadcrumbs were not quite coverable and it was less crispy than I imagined. sad On a whole it was quite soggy and fragile.. as a onion rings lover, I much prefer thicker pieces!
    Chicken caesar salad
    Chicken caesar salad

bowl Chicken caesar salad: It had a nice flavour with a taste of sweet and fresh lemonade. To my surprise, the breadcrumbs were soft and crispy! The lettuce were fresh and cut in to small pieces for my convience of eating! Loving it! tongue
    White Wine
    White Wine

bowl White wine (Lungarotti, Pinot Grigio IGT, 2009/10, Umbria, Italy): Personally I'm not an expert in drinking wine at all. But this bottle of white wine tasted very sweet to me.. it was easy to drink at first but hard to keep myself going later on.
    Wild mushroom risotto
    Wild mushroom risotto

bowl Wild mushroom risotto: From its appearance, it was nothing too surprising. But you should never judge a book by its cover! smile Though it was slightly dried, the strong and heavy onion and mushroom flavour were able to enlighted my appetize! It was quite a simple dish with a simple use of ingredients, so much better than the linguine! It would be better if there could be more cheese!
    Louisiana Seafood Fettucine
    Louisiana Seafood Fettucine

bowl Louisiana Seafood Fettucine: Personally, I found this dish most 'heavy'. Not only was the Rosemary (herbs) too heavy, the sauce was not thick enough to blend in with the seafood and linguine... making the whole dish really starchy and tasteless! sadsad Strongly discouraged anyone in trying out this dish when you next pay your visit!

On a whole, the food were generally really tummy-fulfilling but HUGE! As for quality-wise, I'm not sure if I would rank this high as the dishes weren't exactly cooked at the finest quality cooking comparing to some other famous names in town. It's hard to judge the food when it comes to American dishes...personally I prefer Outback and Ruby Tuesday... perhaps they have a better atmosphere and food that fit their genre? Not too sure if I will come back to Dan Ryan anymore - dislike the setting, over-priced MENU and the dishes choices were quite limited.

great lunch Smile Jan 18, 2011

Was at Festival Walk, so decided to eat at Dan Ryan's for lunch with my wife. I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak and iced tea. My wife got the cheese & herb ravioli off the lunch menu.

I was really pleased with the cheesesteak; a lot of melted cheese, plenty of shaved beef, not too many caramelized onions and a nice soft baguette. I added a pinch of Colman's English mustard, because that's how I like it. Excellent mixture of tastes and a good portion. The fries were good, but nothing special.

The waitress was pretty attentive and kept coming back to fill my tea and water, so the service was above average.

My wife thought the ravioli was good, but nothing special.

My only complaint was a loud group of mothers with their young kids.

I literally just came here because I was curious about their renowned muffin. I was THAT curious. And what is my verdict on it? It was very… nutty.
It’s the dry and crumbly kind, with loads of nuts. Not bad, but I do prefer moist muffins, so I wouldn’t be going back again just to have it.
    What about my main?
    Tuna Melt
This wasn’t on the dinner menu, but they kindly agreed to make something on the lunch menu for me.
I was in the mood for a big juicy sandwich that was oozing with filling. So I chose this. Was it big and juicy and oozing with filling? Sadly, not so much. The tuna was in desperate need for more mayo, and though there was lots of melting cheese, it somehow didn’t taste as cheesy as I would have liked. It lacked…ooziness. I blame it on the dryness of the tuna. And, I usually expect the tuna to be cold, but weirdly, it was the hottest thing on the dish, even hotter than the melted cheese. The bread was even worse as it appeared soggy with oil. Yet the whole thing put together – the soggy bread, lumpy tuna, melted cheese – they all mash up in your mouth quite delightfully, despite the individual ingredients being so mediocre on their own.
On the side, were the fries, coleslaw, and a piece of gherkin. Again, nothing amazing about any of them, yet they all contributed to the variety within the dish, and made it more interesting to eat. Clearly, I’m big on variety.

I still can’t believe I went for the sake of tasting something that’s on-the-house…

No wait for table, hmmmmm, no problem. My wife's birthday, she HK Chinese, me American. Her choice (where ya wanna go kid for birthday dinner?)

To be honest, brunch at Dan's place is great on weekends! Can't recommend it more if you want a true US style brunch.

    Dinner is a different story...........
    Service is not very good
    Food is just ok

    We were disappointed

Mrs. B had the crab cakes, she loves crab cakes ;) But she leaned over to me and said....."Too thick, not well cooked, you can do better Mr. B ..........(hahahaha, i knew that, i'm a crab cake expert!, all modesty aside!) I had the shrimp dinner, it was ok.

All thru dinner (we sat in a booth at the end beside a potted plant), someone (several waitresses) shook the plant, moved it back and forth. Startled me each time, like something from the movie where some plant ate some dude, forgot the name of it. To put it mildly, i was jumpy halfway thru the bread.

anyhoo, go for the brunch, skip dinner.

Very thirsty after meal Smile May 10, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Went here for lunch and ordered the usual dish, chicken ceasar salad.

The menu is hardly ever changed. We went for more or less the same set lunch as previously. I went for the traditional onion soup and chicken ceasar salad.

The muffins were again very delicious. As for the onion soup, I much preferred the crackers. The chicken ceasar salad was really good. I liked the grilled chicken and there was plenty of salad which was well blended with the sauce.

Anyway, food here is overall good and consistent. However, it surprised me at how thirsty I've become after having lunch here. No matter how much water I drink afterwards, I just feel so thirsty. Makes me wonder if they've added a lot of MSG or special spices, but I seriously don't know.

Service here is not too bad and quite efficient and the setting of the restaurant is comfortable. Prices here are reasonable as well.

have been there a few times. also went to the one is TST Ocean Terminal but found this one in Kowloon Tong MUCH better.

food is alright.. i wouldn't recommend the pastas. I ordered a bolognise and when it came, the pasta was dry and just a large dullop of "tin" tomato sauce on top. really off putting.
but my partner ordered the burger and said it was terrific.

atmosphere is very good if you don't want a quiet dinner as it can be VERY noisy. especially up around the bar area. But even at the back, the noise can be distracting if you want a quiet private dinner.

but it's good for celebrations and group dining. or on a first date if you're worried there's nothing to talk about. the noise around you can make up for the silence lol lol

Service is very good. no problem reserving a table in English as the hostess speaks it very well.

A bit disappointed Just OK Oct 12, 2009

    Bday celebration dinner
Booked a table a few days ago. I asked if I could order a cake in advance but the waitress said the cake was very big, but they could give us a piece of carrot cake if one of us had birthday around that day, or I could bring my own cake. Obviously the carrot cake was not attractive so I decided to bring a cake.

    Five of us ordered:
    1) Chicken caesar: a typical caesar sald, but seems a good dish in this meal
    2) Nachos: not enough cheese, nachos not crispy enough, sigh sad
    3) Potato skins: not hot at all, just warm, so the cheese not very melted, i'm a potato skin lover, very disappointed. sad
    4) Half slab ribs: so-so, a bit dried. the mash potato ball was big, but we were too full to finish it.
    5) Rack of lamb: I dont eat lamb, but my friends said its good but better with more 'lamb flavour'
    6) Hamburger: we emphasized to have it medium well, the beef was appeared 'red' so we expected its juicy, but turned out it wasnt juicy at all, VERY DRIED! The bread was very normal, not crispy at all, how come?! We chose swiss cheese but its too thin mad

I brought a cake and asked the waitress to take it out when we're about to finish the dinner. We'd waited for so long actually. Finally the crew came out and sang a song for my friend. They were a bit unnatural so I asked my friends to sing louder to mask them...

My friend likes American restaurants a lot and we had to have the dinner in Kowloon Tong so I picked Dan Ryan's. Although the food was not very bad, the service and decor (Halloween now) were fine, its not worth for the price. I think I wont recommend others to try it, and have Bday celebration here. Better go Ruby XX!

I was appalled by the lack of attention, cost cutting, and inefficient service.
Last time we came here was probably 6 months ago. The reason we did not come back sonner was simple.
This time, we thought we should give it another shot, never know, things may have changed for ...better.
Surprised! Or not surprised, it is getting worse.
It was lunch time on Sunday after church.
    1) we ordered coffee and the coffer was plain, like water with coffee flavored;
    2) we waited for 40 minutes for my hamburger, omelette.. nothing happened until we ran out of patient;
    3) Finally, the food came. It was lukewarm.... probably have been sitting somewhere for a while.
    4) My burger we better than what you can get from Mcdonald.. only in size not in taste.
    5) If you did not ask for any bread, it would not be provided (environmental consideration?)
The waiters seemed not really bother if the food was oaky or not. They were no where to be seen.
I can tell you that this happened three times before in the same place. I think I would recommend the Italian restaurant one floor up.

This is the second time that I've visited Dan Ryan's since I've been in Hong Kong, and I have to say that they serve 'decent' American-style dishes (although not American portions as they claim).

We ordered a clam chowder, the seafood platter, spaghetti and meat sauce. For drinks, we ordered a Lemonade (recommended by them) and a smoothie.

    1. Appetizer - Free carrot cake muffins and french bread. I love the carrot cake muffin, although I feel like it's a bit heavy to be an appetizer. My boyfriend and I loved the french bread, and we had to ask for more servings!

    2. Drinks - The lemonade was very nice, just the right amount of sour, and lots of fizz. Very nice blend, tasted like it had some pink grapefruit juice and some other citrus juices. The smoothie wasn't excellent, but it was good, compared to the other horrible milkshakes/smoothies we've had in Hong Kong.

    3. Clam chowder - Comes in a nice bread bowl, but unfortunately the chowder was so chunky and thick that it was almost like eating chunks of potato with a cream sauce. I don't feel like there was nearly enough clam meat. The bread was nice to eat with butter though.

    4. I felt like the seafood platter was a bit small for the price, but then again, we can't expect the same portions that we expect in Australia/US. The crab legs were just alright, not meaty enough. The grilled half Boston lobster was good. Meat was juicy and cooked to perfection. Too bad that the lobster was tiny and there was hardly any meat in it! The prawns and scallops were ok.

    5. The spaghetti and meat sauce was a bit disappointing, perhaps because I was comparing it to the spaghetti bolognaise that I eat back in Australia. I think that the spag and meat sauce in Hong Kong is more suited to the locals.

Overall, Dan Ryan's is a good dining experience. Medium-priced foods, restaurant has a nice ambiance. It was quiet the night we went, but on busy Friday and Saturday nights, the restaurant is filled with screaming kids running around with balloons, so if you're looking for a romantic atmosphere, I suggest going during the weekdays.

I have visited this restaurant a couple of times before (both for lunch and dinner), and though food was not superb, all my previous visits were quite satisfactory. However, the exeprience we had this time was definitely a total disappointment. I seriously would not consider this restaurant again at least in the near future.

We arrived at the restaurant 15 mins before our reservation at 7:45pm. When I checked with the lady at the reception whether we could have our table earlier, the answer we got was: "no, you can't. you booked 7:45pm, so you come back at 7:45pm" Ok, yes, we came 15 mins earlier. It's actually not a problem to wait for 15 mins, but can you put us to wait in a friendlier manner? All of us were pissed off by the lady's rude manner.

So we hang around for another 15 mins before we showed up at the reception counter again. This time another lady greeted us, and she replied that our table was ready. We were given a regular 4-seat table (2-2 on each side), but what was perhaps "irregular" was the space between our table and the one behind us - it was so narrow that you could harldly pull out the chair, not to mention to sit on it. So while two of us sat down, the other two had to stand up. We asked for help immediately, and a staff member came by and said: "please wait for a second. I will get someone to move the table.". And it turned out that this "second' lasted for 5 mins. We saw watiers running around serving food, but none of them stopped by to help. And the waitress who said "I will get someone" was no where to be seen. In the end we decided that all of us should stand up, as a gesture of protest (what a scene). Then a manager came by to see what was happening. We told him what had happened, and he turned around to check with other staff members whether someone was coming to move the table. A waitress replied that she was actually arranging another table for us. 3 mins later we were given a new table at the corner.

Obviously we were all very pissed off even before we made our order.

Now, the food. We ordered an appetizer platter, a meat-ball spaghetti and a linguine with clams. All tasted so-so, especially the appetizer platter (we couldn't finish the chicken drums and onion rings though we were all quite hungry). The ravioli I had here some time ago (served during lunch) tasted heavenly but no, not this meat-ball spaghetti.

Apart from the bad service the environment overall was not very promising. The full-house restaurant (yes, on a Thur night) was extremely noisy, and we could hardly hear each other.

We ended up paying $100 each (with 15% off with U-offers). Not very expensive, but considering the bad service we received, I won't say it's worth the money.
