At the green iconic market Just OK Mar 23, 2013

The decor and interior of this place reminded me to Hotel Elan, it had style and promotes greeness!

They have the hotel name boldly incorporated on a dining table which can be seen from above.

I have always wanted to try this place for their buffets but it is not near the MTR station.

The name THE MARKET is rather unusual, The Market to me is a place with stalls of vegetables, fishes etc at bricklane.

The buffet here was quite good especially the Chicken tikka, Indian curries and rice.

The puddings were served in cute egg cups, my favourite was the honeydew melon jelly but it was slightly too sweet.

I made a reservation for a month ago for this lunch buffet. The environment of this restaurant is spacious and comfortable, but we got a table very far away to the buffet section. The layout of each section is very clear and systematic. The traffic flow was fine and not feel very crowded.

On the appetizers, we have sashimi which was prepared by a Chef on what we order, the sushi was prepared in advance in a plate, it looks fine but we haven't try this. The sashimi was fine and good taste. They have well-prepared salad and some vegetables with different types of sauce for your selection. In addition, you can try some cold cuts and parma ham with truffle sauce, that was refreshing and not salty even eat without melon. The long crab and seafood was very good as well. The lobster bisque was nice. The tuna fish jelly was seldom served in buffet and which was light and not salty.

The hot and grill section was served in different cuisine. The Chinese food (double-boiled soup), the Indian food (curry and satay) and some Western food (the steak, sausages and grill lamb chop) All dishes served with accompaniment, such as rice, naan bread and served with different sauces or dressing, in details and decent. All taste was fine.

I try the cheese platter, but only a few election, not bad.

You should not miss the dessert at the end, which was very delicious and found something special when compare with other hotel. The small cut cake was very delicate, light and well presented. The homemade vegetable sorbet and yogurt was special and very refreshing after this heavy meal. I forgot to have a marcron and the staff didn't remind us. I think it is not free of charge.

At the end of the meal you can have mocha, cuppucino without extra charges. That's great!

The service of staff was attentive and quick for water refill and collect dirty plates. If you are PolyU alumnus or Privilege card holder, you can enjoy the food and beverage discount offer at discount 15% up to 8 Sept . This is value for money if you can try this buffet at discount price.

Is it really that good? Cries Jul 24, 2011

Read all the good comments and went there for late lunch buffet (effectively it is tea buffet but they somehow call it the second round of lunch buffet), the result is - disappointment!

The food is alright but definitely not up to the 5-star hotel level. I am not sure if this is a 5-star of 4-star hotel so it is fine with me. The problem is the attitude of the staffs (some of them, in fact many of them) as well as the attention to details. Classic examples are:

    1) For the sushi and sashimi, the wasabi and soy sauce provided were those little packs used in the "cheap" sushi takeout places. The taste of the so-called wasabi is highly chemical. Of course I am not expecting the natural grown and fresh wasabi, but at least it should provide normal ones like those in the rotational sushi shops. In fact I have never seen such (takeaway wasabi and soy sauce) in any hotel in Hong Kong before.

    2) There is a grill section. In front of the grill, the plates were half full and all the beef were well done (in fact more like 110% done). I asked the cook behind the grill who was supposed to entertain the customers if he could get me a medium. He looked up slowly, gave me an impression that he was annoyed, and said "come back later and see if there is any lah". Sounds familiar to me like I was in mainland 10+ years ago....

    3) Other than 3-4 staffs, most wait staffs are not professional. Many of them grouped together (2-3 in a group) and "chit-chat" but neglected the customers. Many of their conversations were heard by the customers and what I heard was some gossips and criticism on other staffs or managers. Certainly not well trained.

Many 4-star hotels offer much better food and services than this one and are more value for money. Why should I come back again?
