A tasteless red velvet cake Cries Sep 28, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Having tried one of the best red velvet cakes at Hamming Bird Bakery in London, I’ve always been searching for an equivalently delicious substitute in Hong Kong. smile I was walking around in this neighborhood one Saturday night, and I noticed this bright bluish bakery from across the street. They have got a wide range of cake selections and the newly arrived red velvet cake immediately caught my sight. shocked Without a second thought, I was carrying the thoughtfully wrapped sliced-cake home. tongue
A dry and tastless red velvet cake
A dry and tastless red velvet cake

The red velvet cake had the traditional look with white frosting on top and reddish sponge cake in the middle. smile However, the cake lacked flavors. huffy I found the cream-cheese icing to be too subtle in flavors and the layer cakes was too dry to my liking – almost tasteless….mad Perhaps the cake had been sat out for hours or it was simply a bad batch this time, but it’s definitely not the quality I expected for a HKD32 cake. sad

Not sure if i still want to try out their infamous crunch cake in the future...mad

The red velvet cake was new so tried that, as well as that there was the rocky mountain pie which I would like to try as well but that looked solid and hard.

The cake tasted nice and the buttercream complemented it well, however the cake itself was too hard.
    I would prefer it softer.

fool by the sandwich Just OK Jan 03, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
It is a cozy little cafe, that make you want to stop by for a break. Sky Blue colour decoration with a cute logo, I was thinking it is a cake shop without other food, but they have limited choices of sandwiches. For drinks, they have tea and coffee, but I don't want to waste my coffee quota, so I don't think I should try their coffee, I chose a bottle of blueberry sparking drink instead.

For the sandwich, I picked the chicken mushroom susage sandwich, the server is so nice to heat up the sandwich for me. When the sandwich arrived, I was surprised that I can only see pieces of susage and becon... where's my chicken and mushroom shocked I asked the server if he made it wrong, he asked if I don't eat becon I was asking about to have a chicken mushroom susage sandwich!!! He told that susage is called "chicken mushroom susage". Oh, no, I was fool by the susage!!!

Generally speaking, their food quality is ok, and the decoration and atmosphere is cozy, however I was totally fooled by the name of the susage, I hope they could put a clearer name and keep up the attentive services.

Hazelnut cake Just OK Nov 25, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Haven’t been to Ginger bakery for ages, so decided to give it a visit.
Tried the hazelnut cake which had lots of whole hazelnuts.
As well as hazelnuts, it seemed to contain hazelnut essence in the cake mixture as well.
Overall it was quite nice, but I would have preferred the cake to be slightly softer.

Before this place opened, the shop was already attractive and stuck out from the street.
It had a nice ocean blue background with a simple white logo which represents a slice of cake, the top of the cake logo is actually a "G" for Ginger bakery.

Anyway after it opened I bought a few cakes to try on my first visit, I was not given a 10% discount card for my next visit, however on my second visit, I was given one, but that time I had already tried everything.
The staff were OK, but perhaps slightly too pushy, as soon as you enter they expect you to be buying and know what you want.

    Lime chiffon tart:
On the label it said Lime chiffon tart, but it actually looked like a lemon tart and the colour was like lemon.
The taste was more lemon than lime.
    It was not sour either.
The texture of the filling was mousse like, with the fine mousse bubbles popping in your mouth.

    Apple crumble:
It would have been great if it came with a scoop of ice-cream or perhaps some whipped cream or hot custard.
Anyway, the apple crumble was quite hard, and the crumble came off the apple.
The apple was slices of apple and not the soft cooked apple I was hoping for.

As mentioned above, it was the worst cappuccino I have ever had in my life. The milk is so thick that i could not drink the coffee at the bottom. I guess their steamer is just couldnt pump in enough bubbles into the milk OR they have used the wrong kind of milk. So I speaked up n they offered me another cup. I appreciated the service, however, I will never be back.

Came past wanchai and after getting some business finished needed a quick break. Having seen this opening from around a week, gave This a go. Croissant was too spongy rather than layered, also too sweet and not very buttery. Typical hk style... Coffee of caffe latte, was made ok, but quite smoky and caramel like, very similar to Bespoke's ordinary but well accepted style as my coffee friend would put it. *Posted from my mobile after crashing 10 times over, and can't access my camera photos either as it's being fixed!

Yummy Yummy! Smile Mar 13, 2011

I had lunch at Fook Lam Moon with my colleague and was heading back to the office when we passed this restaurant. Since I just read from a magazine that they serve a very good carrot cake and we were craving from some dessert, we went in to give it a try. There were 4 of us and we tried the Carrot Cake, Apple Crumble and Lemon Tart. I have not had Carrot Cake for a long time in HK because I have not tasted any good ones in HK so far. This one is an exception. It is moist, not too sweet or heavy and very fresh - I really like the walnuts inside, it goods really well together with the carrots - very yummy. Then we tried the Apple Crumble, something I always like. I like the fact that the filling inside is made from layers of apples - really good stuff - too bad they didn't have any ice cream to go with it, else it would be perfect. If you like someting light - the Lemon Tart is a pretty good choice. The staff and service is very friendly and place is quite comfortable. The coffee is pretty good as well, not as bland as the stuff at Starbucks. I will definitely go back to try their croissants, scones, pastries and muffins. The staff told me that is made fresh daily from the kitchen inside.

love the apple crumble! Smile Mar 01, 2011

I was lookin for food after running some errands today at wanchai. While walking down johnson road, I first got attracted to the super sharp blue arch of this shop and then i got attracted to the cakes. I love cakes and so walkws in to have a try. A very friendly welcome from the pretty owner and was served with sincere attitude. not too pushy, which is good.

I ordered my favorite apple crumble and a cup of latte to stop my stomach growling. PRETTY GOOD stuff! I've tried many apple crumbles but this one is really awesome! The latte was ok. haha..

The apple crumble there started me to blogging on openrice. haha.. well, I'll definitely go back to try other cakes from this place.
