Semi buffet and lunch at LIS Just OK Jul 03, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Basically this place serves a semi buffet in the quiet side of Hong Kong.

Ordered the risotto which was slghtly too creamy, but the starters, soup and dessert were ok.

The main course menu has about six dishes to choose from.

The dessert ranges from waffles, ice-creams and cakes.

Discovery (other than buffets) Just OK Jun 05, 2011

L'hotel Island South is my recent interesting find. I don't think there are many hotels in the world that are surrounded by factory buildings (OK now we're talking about new hotels, I don't mean those hotels converted from industrial buildings).

Once inside you feel the stark contrast to the outside world - the bright, marine-themed decorations immediately brings you the "holiday mood".

Let's not forget I came to Wong Chuk Hang for business...and now I deserve my little escape.

I hadn't had lunch yet and here seemed to be a decent place for one. In fact it was already well past lunch time but the receptionist told me that they were still open for tea.

The lights were nearly all dimmed mad and I could hardly read the menu without the spotlight above the table. Judging from the decor, the ambience would have been much better if they had turned on the lights.

The set-up of the place was for buffet. What they had for the tea set was just a selection of the unappealing looking cakes out that at the dessert counter with a drink. I wanted something savory and ordered a LIS Club Sandwich ($118) a la carte.

This is what was written in the menu about the sandwich:
Shaved BBQ Pork, Camembert Cheese, Guacamole, Lettuce, Tomato and Herb Mayonnaise on Wild Grain Toast

What wasn't written was that it was served with chips and salad! Not a bad idea a I was starving, and rightly the sandwich came deli-style complete with an olive on a stick.

You can check from this picture that all the ingredients were there smile. You get the creaminess of the Camembert cheese, crispiness of the vegs and sweeatness of the pork. Oh and I LOVE guacamole although it spurted onto my hands as I bit into the sandwich. The portion was actually quite generous, you can go for the whole thing if you have a hearty appetite (like I did on the day), or it is even better shared. Surprisingly the chips were good too, thick, hot and crispy and they reminded me of the good old days of childhood when I used to visit the HK-style fast food shops near my home for freshly fried chips.

At this time of the day, it is understandanble why the wait staff weren't exactly very helpful. Anyway if you want something other than dinner buffets in here, here they offer items (Western, SE Asian) infused with HK elements. And they got 25% discount off the a la carte items during the afternoon tea session. So it wasn't exactly bad afterall.

    Spending per head: Approximately HKD100(Tea)

Feels Cheated Cries Dec 09, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
On this fine sunday Tenz n I were mo-liu-ing at home... and we suddenly craved for buffet. Logged on to Openrice and searched around... hm, this place nearby looks pretty good (from all the previous comments and photos)!! Nil problem for booking too, plus a 25% off deal... let's do it!
Now I daresay my appetite is edging on comparable with COCKROACHES... I practically eat anything. My lenience towards tastes and flavors is also very high, I seldom detest food... plus, it IS a hotel buffet we are going to right, how bad can it get?

    Interior looks not bad
    Interior looks not bad

We arrived around 1930... there was a F-load of kids running around... fine, family day, ok la... The environment and ambiance were pretty nice too. The service members were helpful and friendly. Scanning the food tables, wow, looks just like what people posted on Openrice!! And we were getting pretty hungry too, so off we went to feast ourselves.
And thatz where it all headed DOWN-HILL. Way down.
Now as you are reading my review, please kindly scroll down to look at photos of previous entries. And, please do a little re-cap of what I have written so far. All looks pretty good eh?
Yeah, you got that right. It is all just LOOKS.
    Looks Fresh eh?
    Looks Fresh eh?

I have taken this photo for better illustration. The fish and the hairy crab were on the house - each person gets to choose one. Looks pretty good right? But the thing is, when I put the fish into my mouth, the texture was softer than the fish you can find from a fillet o' fish. There was nil flavor. The crab... looks like there were plenty of roe, but once you suck on it, it was tasteless.
Now when I say tasteless, it doesn't mean they have forgotten to add salt or marinate the food. It literally means there was no flavor. When I pulled a piece of meat from the crayfish shell and ate it, it was soaked with water, and not a single pint of lobster or crayfish or shellfish or WHATEVER taste - I was simply chewing on a slab of 'thing'.
the funny thing is, they were able to do that to all the food. You can imagine how I felt when I was eating their smoked salmon - the texture was like smoked salmon, but there was just a small bit of salmon flavor, not to mention any saltiness or anything else. Same works for their shashimi.
I tried to think that it was my palate gone wrong. I tried the whole night. But when I started doing their desserts - I could not lie to myself anymore. Their desserts tasted quite good (esp they got strawberry yogurt)!!! So all night long I wasn't dreaming or anything, their hot fishes and seafood were really like what I have described!!
So you see why I feel like being cheated? Everything looked right, but the flavors were all wrong. ARGH.
Hope the management can deal with this... or else, it doesn't matter what discounts you put up. People would rather pay a bit more to eat better.
Have never given a crying face in Openrice. Never expected LIS to be my first. <Sigh>

Went to Ocean Park earlier this month with my friends and they brought me to this new opened hotel for buffet at night!! The hotel is doing a promotion....I think it was on 20-25% discount.

First of all, the hotel is very new and stylish! and very modern as well! When we got out from the lift....saw a big fridge with more than 10 desserts in it!!!*drooling*!!!! but the biggest highlight from that night is their SEAFOOD!!!!! so many different styles of crabs and seafood!! lollol

~*yummy**yummy* and each of us got a free hair crab each!!!

They also have salad, small cocktail dishes, sashimi, noodle bar and bbq section!

ok...here comes my favourite part of the night.smile..dessert!!! My favours are the serradura and the mango glass dessert!

overall, I think it is a very good buffet with good ambiance too!
