Deeply Disappointed Cries Dec 08, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I have never felt the need to comment on any restaurant however, our dreadful experience with Rang Mahal I thought was worth sharing. We decided to have a quiet night in and order Indian Cuisine, we had picked up a flyer previously and decided we would order takeout.

We accessed the online website to view the menu and placed the order through telephone at 6:54. The order we have placed was for Chicken Mikhani, Lamb Masala, Garlic Naan and Butter Naan. After waiting for about over half an hour, we called again and 7:47 and was told that the delivery was on the way and we received it roughly at 8:00 over an hour later.

When it arrived, not only did the price of the Naan differ from what was shown online, but furthermore the items we received were different to what was ordered and placed on the receipt. We had received instead Samosa, Roti, Lamb Masala and Lamb Biryani.

Patient and meaning well, we requested for the food to be sent back and requested to have our original order to be delivered. When we finally received it again over an hour after at 9:14 to our surprise we were given the exact same items as the previous delivery, with the exception of the Roti replaced with the Naan.

We were fed up by this point and decided to have whatever was delivered to us. The Naan was not only flavorless and lukewarm, but also tough. The Biryani had chunk of unflavored white rice littered within it, the Lamb Masala was stupendously spicy even for someone of South-East Asian decent and it definitely was not worth the $194 dollars it cost us. Only we did not have the Samosa as it was removed from the delivery as the delivery boy realized last minute it was not in our order.

I have to say this was the worst experience I have ever had with any restaurant in Hong Kong.

    Sizzling Tandori Chicken
    Sizzling Tandori Chicken

It's my alternative canteen other than Chinese & Thai food in Causeway Bay.

Ambience is causal. And more importance, the smiling face of the boss.

A whole sizzling tandori chicken is reasonable $110. Portion is generous.

Boss recommended a curry lamp. Lamp is succulent.

My wife and I had great time last night.

If you wander in Causeway Bay for foods, maybe run out of ideas, it's not a bad choice with reasonable price.

    Bon Appetit

Great Food with nice ambience Smile Feb 25, 2012

I came to Hong Kong for Exhibition. I am a great Indian Food lover. I love the Indian bread called Naan. So I found Rang Mahal Indian Restaurant near Exhibition Centre. As I told you I love Naan, but the Manager introduced me healthy whole wheat flour bread called roti and paratha. Awesome taste. Besides this I ordered Chicken Tikka, Lamb Rogan Josh and Alu Gobi. Everything was fresh and taste like homemade food. Chicken Tikka was quite juicy and tender. I still remember the taste. Also the manager gave me lots of information about shopping and sight scenes as this is my first visit in Hong Kong. Ohhhhhhhh I forgot something which taste like heaven SAMOSA….. I love to have again and again. The restaurant location is very convenient and decent. Great food, service and location. I will surely come back Rang Mahal………………

Terrible Food Cries Feb 08, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
On 7 Feb I took my Indian friends who were visiting me from Canada for lunch. The food was terrible, service worst and the waiter/waitresses (there was only 1 from each gender) had attitude. Both very unco-operative. Since I am an Indian and know Indian food very well, I am certain that the food was not fresh and must have been prepared days in advance and left over. We all felt very uncomfortable whole day. Very oily, tasteless and just warm food. I would not even give such food to my dog. I was really feeling very embarassed for having invited my friends at this restaurant. I will NEVER go there even if they offer free.

Went there for a groupon deal where I was to get a soup, samosa, curry and drink.

Received: watery soup, bad curry and rice and a samosa when I was half way done w curry without the mint and tamarind sauces. Samosa was good but only relatively speaking. They had a lunch buffet that seemed a little better but NOTHING SPECIAL.

I dont need a nice ambiance if its great Indian food but this place missed on both counts!

Good value for money Smile Jan 09, 2011

I just came back from the lunch buffet, and thought it was good value for money. The chicken tikka was succulent and tender, as was the lamb curry. The vegetable curry was also pretty good.

The selection could have been larger, but overall, it was a very good deal for only HKD 78 (samosas, pakora, chicken curry, chicken tikka, lamb curry, dhal, vegetable curry, two types of rice, naan, salad, gulab jamun and a pudding dessert, plus Indian tea)

The location is right by Times Square, on Percival Street -- very convenient. However, the building is not easy to find, and you have to walk up to the first floor from an entrance that does not look all that interesting.

Yesterday we went to this restaurant for dinner after reading so
many good reviews in openrice. Well, we weren't disappointed. We ordered Set Menu for 2 ($238). My children simply loved the chicken/fish tikka and orderd one more plate. Service was good too. The owner told us they have lunch buffet from Mon-Sun. We will defenitely visit this restaurant again.

I visited with my family there. I think the food is good. We tried Chicken Tikka, Lamb Rogan Josh, Nan and pulao rice. Chicken Tikka was juicy and tasty. Lamb was well cooked.

I would like to go there again.

When i visit i got very very warm wellcome, and staff is so nice they offered us immediately roasted papadam with chilled water and give us wellcome summer cooler,i ordered for set for 2 person which include 11 item including 2 drinks, the samosa are look quiet fresh and chicken tikka & seekh kebab was delicious served on hot plate.

The breads and the curries arrived. This is my first time having a korma curry, and it was very light in colour (cream white?) as well as a thick and creamy body. The taste was very light and not spicy at all. There was a hint of coconut I think, which went well with the subtle spices in the dish. The mutton was surprisingly tender and lean

We ordered a variety of dishes and everyone loved their meal.

Definitely return to this restaurant in the near future.

Not that good Cries May 22, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
The 3 of us ordered a 2 person set dinner for $238, and added a chicken jalfrezi, a vegetable creamy curry with cashews, and onion bread. It turned out to be a lot of food and we barely managed to finish it off (even after I had exercised for 3 hours)

The poppadum was... soggy. It's disappointing, because not only was it not the first dish to appear (we had to ask for it eventhough it was from the set menu), it tasted like leftovers from the night before. The mint sauce wasn't minty and the other reddish brown sauce was too mild to tell whether it was spicy or sweet. The samosas and some deep fried stuff came in a small dish, and tasted agreeable enough. The fish tikka was 2 meagre slices of fish fillets and reminded me of fish fingers back at boarding school. The chicken tikka lacked colour and taste, and looked like it was barely in the oven long enough, but at least it wasn't undercooked, but it definitely was the fiery red and sizzling hot ones I'm accustomed to. The lam curry was the best dish of the night, with tender and chunky pieces of lamb simmering in a bowl of mild but tasty curry. The chicken jalfrezi was too soggy and oily. The vegetable curry looked like it was cooked in Campbell's cream soup, with bits of vegetable glued in a lumpy mess of white sauce. The pulau rice was not too hard but a little dry, which was remedied by lots of curry sauce. The naan and the onion bread was barely warm, and was piled up looking rather limp in the basket. The mango lassis were ok, quite creamy like a shake, and I can't really taste the yoghurt. A bottle of water stood at every table, which is quite clever/sneaky of them because customers would tend to open the bottle of water without thinking and later get charged for it.

The 2 waiter and waitress were trying their best to serve everyone and put on a smile. The restaurant was quite full, which may be the reason why the inadequate air conditioning became even more unnoticeable - we were sweating our way through dinner. When the bill came, the receipt said $465 with service charge, but the one for credir card signature said $485. I gave them the benefit of doubt that it was an honest mistake.

All in all, despite being a members only restaurant, the experience was not worth joining the "club" even for free.
