    won't disappoint Smile Dec 18, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
went for weekday lunch at around 1215pm.
Already a queue was forming, but my party had only 3 persons, so I could get a seat pretty quickly.

    Ordered the following dishes:
    1) Xiaolong bao (the classic little dragon dumplings) - 5 out of 5 stars. I like the soup that oozes out of the filling. This won't disappoint.
    2) Crabmeat xiaolong bao - 3.5 out of 5 stars. More expensive than the classic version, but I didn't really like the crabmeat taste in this. A bit too fishy for my liking.
    3) vegetables and meat dumpling - 3.5 out of 5 stars. so-so.
    4) Spinach with garlic - 4.5 out of 5 stars. Nice garlic taste in the dish. Vegetables were nicely cooked.
    5) Stewed beef with noodles (Hong Siew Ngow Yok Mien) - 3.5 out of 5 stars. Ok. Good for a cold day, since it is slightly spicy and is piping hot.

Total bill was HKD 420 for 3 persons and 5 dishes.

Last few months I’ve paid a few visits to the popular Taiwanese chain – Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐), the restaurant that’s famous for their juicy, handmade Xiao Long Bao (小籠包), in which the popularity of the chain has made the restaurant spawned outlets worldwide.
    The Xiao Long Bao
    The Xiao Long Bao

The Xiao Long Bao itself is best be eaten ASAP, in order to taste it’s full profile of flavor: the great combination of the soup and the pork meat inside, sealed in the tender and fragile dumpling skin outside. Din Tai Fung’s Xiao Long Bao is also available in different, more precious variations: crab oil, black truffle etc.

The default serving of their Xiao Long Bao is 6pcs per bamboo container, which for food hunters like me is not enough, so that I’ve ordered it again and again.
    Ordered again and again
    Ordered again and again

Apart from their signature dish, the restaurant also serves other food including fried rice, dim sums etc, but here’s the other food really catched my attention: Shallow-fried Pork Dumplings (煎餃子).
    Shallow-fried Pork Dumplings (煎餃子)

I liked it’s slightly-thicker dumpling skin and the also juicy pork meat inside, but most importantly is because of the interesting “flat” piece of skin on top, this has made the dumplings has the added crispiness.

After finished the meal, don’t forget to say goodbye with this cute Xiao Long Bao man standing outside this Michelin starred restaurant!

Heaven on a spoon Smile Jan 18, 2012

I am new to Hong Kong and relatively un-experienced with Dim Sum. Over the years I have found dim sum to be unexciting for me and never found a dish I really liked. Until coming here. Now, I'm in love with Xiao Long Bao.

I have been here twice in 1 month, and for good reason. The first time we (my wife and I) went around 8pm and waited for about 5 minutes. The second we went for lunch and there was no wait. The second time I ordered an entire set of Xiao Long Bao pork dumplings to myself. lol

The hot and sour soup is also very good, especially with a little vinegar added. The greens can be a little bland but worth experimenting with since they are not expensive.

The price is very well priced. Especially considering that you are eating at a Michelin rated world renowned establishment. The service is also exceptional, especially for Hong Kong.

Would recommend to everyone to try at least once. And, please follow the instructions on the card at your table on how to prepare your Xiao Long Bao.

Yummy Xiao Long Bao's Smile Nov 24, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook

I had a friend in town who loved xio long bao's so I decided to take him to Din Tai Fung to try out their famous Xiao Long Bao's.
As soon as I opened the menu I saw that they had truffle xiao long bao!!! We proceeded to order 1 regular one and 1 truffle one. the regular one came first and it was delish! The skin was thin and the bao was very juicy bursting with flavor. Next came the truffle ones. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted! On first thought I didn't think Truffle would taste right in the bao's but i am a big fan of truffle so i thought I would give it a try. We also ordered the jelly fish, the duck tongue which was very good. We decided to order another order of regular xiao long bao's and one more order of truffle xiao long bao's. We ended up eating 12 each! I will for sure be going back for more. One thing that I did not like was the long wait, we waited for close to half and hour.... it was very very busy, so in the future I will go before it's peak time or after.

Very Good Dumplings Smile Nov 14, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I came here for dinner on a Sunday night and it was very busy! I normally go to the Din Tai Fung in Arcadia (Los Angeles). I love the US location but I was very impressed with the wider selection at this location, especially the truffle dumplings! I don't personally love truffles but they were very good (and quite pricey!!). Regardless of the high price tag (they are truffles after all), I would probably order them again since they are so unique. The pork dumplings are always my favorite. In the LA locaton, each serving consists of 10 dumplings vs the 6 here. That was nice so I could try more dishes. I also had the shrimp dumplings (and maybe pork also?) in special sauce. I didn't love it. I feel like the shrimp was overwhelming and I think the special sauce was mainly soy sauce. The string beans were yummy. My friend really liked them.

Given the huge crowds of people waiting, our wait time was surpringly not that long. The service was excellent but it is definitely on the pricier side. Overall, I had a great meal and I would come back again.

I went to Ding Tai Fung in TST the night before and it got my taste buds all fired up, I had to bring my other friend to their Causeway Bay branch to taste their delicious siao long bao the day after! smile

I had their egg fried rice and siao long bao again, tasted just as good as the night before... Tried their veggie & mushroom dumpling which was very tasty as well. We ordered their red bean bun and it was a great finish to our lunch smile

We arrived at 130pm and didn't have to queue which was great as we were both starving! Great service as always, it's really great food and value for money.

Best Xiaolongbao in Hong Kong Smile Mar 15, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
This venue has the best Special steamed pork dumplings (Xiaolongbao or Shao long Bao) I have ever eaten outside of Taiwan. It is a must try for all those who have not been there!

Other tasty "must try" dishes are:
Tossed wild vegetable and beancurd with sesame oil
Drunken chicken in Shaoxing rice wine
Hot & Sour soup with shredded pork & beancurd
    Double boiled chicken soup
    Tossed shredded pickles with pork

All in all, a meal that was reasonably priced for the amount and quality of food that was served. Anyone who complains about the wait time needs to keep in mind all the dishes are cooked as they're ordered so you're getting a fresh meal.

Go there expecting a leisurely meal.

the restaurant uses lots of hard building material for interior design decoration, noise level very high.

no matter how good the food is, the environment will reduce the appetite.

Was wandering around C-Bay thinking of what to have for dinner... Tenz suggested we go try out Ding Tai Feng. Yup, we had a nice meal in their TP shop, let's see if they are any good after coming to Hong Kong.
Ordered some simple dishes. Let's go through them one by one.
    乾煸刀豆
    乾煸刀豆

Flavors are ok, marinated into the core of the veggies. Obviously pre-made, but why can't they get it a bit hotter?

    xiao long bao

    Good but not great
    Good but not great

Had an order of normal ones and the ones with crab. Now I must say, I had high hopes for this. In the TP Shop, on a nice day they made this absolutely fabulous - thin skin, juicy, full scent, hot - that's why I was slightly disappointed with the HK shop. It was hot, it was juicy, but the scent just don't stand out. Other than being slightly sweeter (from the crab meat inside), I find no great difference between the crab one and the normal one. Yet they charge you more!!
Also, the "head" of the xiao long bao (where they twist the dough together) is quite chunky - another point gone. Not even that little local shop down the road makes such a mistake. Hmph.

    紅油抄手
    紅油抄手

The skin is thin alright - but the content is too blended. I would have expected sth more chewy. But the flavors are ok - esp the soy sauce.

Hardly anything to say about the pork chop...

Overall speaking, the food is quite standard - of course, good standard that is. Yet I cannot feel they have put any heart into making the food tastes better. It is all just under the roof of "Ding Tai Feng" and people seem happy enough. Maybe there are other reasons that are hindering them? Sorry but I am just a diner, I would be too shallow to understand any of that...
At this price... I still opt for 金滿庭. At least you get the occasional "Wow" factor. Here?
    "Yeah, nth spesh."

We started off with the jelly fish and cucumber. It was refreshing, light and absolutely delightful.

Next came the drunken chicken – again this is another favourite of mine. The chicken was cold, tender and infused with shao xing wine.

We ordered two types of the xiao long bau. One of them is the normal xiao long bau, the other xiao long bau with crab. I personally prefer the normal xiao long bau, regardless, both types were absolutely incredibly tasty. They were exactly the same as those in Sydney, Singapore, and Taiwan – you would expect them to be anyway, as each xiao long bau is made to measure – i.e. each skin and filling are measured hence each and every single one of them are the same.

Lastly, a serve of vegetables. I didn’t take a photo of this, however, it was delicious and a perfect way to end the meal.

Not very busy while you visited this restaurant during the lunch time of the weekday. It's never like the dinner time or weekend time - always a long queue.

Ordered the Xiao Lung Bao with crab meat, as this is very seasonal and attractive. It took them about 10 minutes to have these dumplings made-with-order. It was super yummy, HKD68 for 6.

We ordered the beef brisket noodle - it was fresh and tender - we liked it.
The sping rolls were also pretty good.

Not to miss, the sticky rice SIU MAI - dumplings were also good while I still preferred Xiao Lung Bao more.

Services was always good here. I understand my friend - he loved going back ! tongue

I dined with 2 friends in Din Tai Fung on wed. I dint expect much before I go as i hv tried the one in TST before and that one did disappoint me!!!

But this one in CWB is much better!!

Good 1: waiting time is much shorter than in TST
Good 2: the food in general is better than in TST
Good 3: there is more spacious than in TST

take one food as an example, 鮮肉小籠包
here, the skin is thinner, hotter and the taste is better too!!
so, if i wanna eat these kinds of food, i must choose this one in CWB!!

    鼎泰豐 is a good restaurant
But the price is to high!
esp. when the dishes are horribly small

    $40-60 per dish is acceptable
provided that the dish is of normal size
the food of 鼎泰豐 really doesn't deserve such a high price, esp. when the environment is not very good

the setting of 鼎泰豐 is not particularly high class
esp. when the tables so packed

the good point about 鼎泰豐 is its service, which is considered to be above average
