Its been hectic keeping up with reviews lately. The portfolio accumulates by the week and as I sit staring at the hundreds of Photo-folder icons, I start to lose vision about what needs to be prioritised, but this shop sits high amongst that pile! Writing about AWFULLY CHOCOLATE has been on my agenda - especially after finally eaten one!

It was therefore strategically planned to finally write my
ONE BAR experiences before this, as I think its crucial to 1stly point out the differences between real Angel Food Cakes vs HK's 天使蛋糕 vs Crunch Cakes and the so-called Chocolate based Maxim's 魔鬼蛋糕 - as otherwise the comparisons will seem amiss.

ORIGINAL CHOCOLATE CAKE : A Chocolate 'Fugly' Cake, look I mean 'Fudgy'.

Made from scratch of 2 chocolate varieties, Belgian and French, do not feel offended by that roughly decorated exterior.

Stylistically different from Maxim's 魔鬼蛋糕, 帝苑酒店's Chocolate Truffle Cake (before Tony Wong left), or Debauve et Gallais's Truffle Cake, etc, here's a reminder that drawing comparisons between them should only be read as reflecting my personal preferences: I found the cake here rather awesome!

It carries a fudge richness throughout which is focused solely on providing customers a back-to-basics, pure chocolate experience. The inside composed of Moist yet Airy Chocolate Sponge layers, its stratified via almost-fruity Chocolate Fudge planes rather than creamier Crémeux nor the harder Truffle-ganache as served in Debauve & Gallais's version. A well balanced act. On top, Awfully Chocolate's Original comes dressed with a low profile, silkily smooth yet fluffily-moist Darker Chocolate Fudge, its rich yet not filling. The whole cake from top to bottom, was designed by the Singaporean inventors to melt-in-your-mouth. SIMPLE YET DECADENT!

AWFULLY CHOCOLATE CERTAINLY PRESENTS A STRONG CASE FOR AN OCCASIONAL NEED TO ADVOCATE 'FORM SHALL FOLLOW FUNCTION' WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD PHILOSOPHY... !
PS: FOR THE HIGHISH PRICE, I WISH IT DID COME WITH PRETTIER CAKE DECORATIONS ON TOP AS A GESTURE FROM THE PROPRIETOR, CONSIDERING ITS MID-HIGH HKD300'S FOR ESSENTIALLY A DOMESTIC-STYLE CAKE, ALBEIT WELL MADE.... BUT IF AND WHEN WE DO BUY ONE, ITS OFTEN TO 'IMPRESS' SOMEONE ON A SPECIAL OCCASION. I MEAN IF ITS HOME MADE BY YOURS TRULY, THEN THE OTHER PARTY WILL BE MORE FORGIVING KNOWING ME AIN'T NO PATISSIER AND ITS PROBABLY MADE BY THE RICE COOKER! YOU COULD ARGUE THIS MIGHT JUST BECOME THE PERFECT OPPORTUNIY TO TEST WHETHER THAT SOMEONE ELSE IS SURFACE DEEP AND WILL ONLY CONSIDER THE AESTHETIC SIDE OF THINGS.
BUT WILL THE CUSTOMER TAKE THE GAMBLE? AS IT IS, ITS PERFECT IN TASTE, BUT NOT COMFORTABLY PRESENTABLE ENOUGH FOR THOSE VERY SPECIAL OCCASIONS....

Moist, Full of Chocolate Flavour - Amazing!
Spending per head: Approximately HKD356
