I can only conclude that those writing positive reviews about this place were paid to do so. Otherwise, how could they write such gleaming reports about such a terrible restaurant

Pomelo and seafood salad - tastes like the chef accidentally split the whole jar of sauce over it - sweet and overpowering
Satay - miniscule (see photo) and tough. Chewy like it had been grilled several times over
Roti - flat doughy, greasy and tiny (see photo) - you need real courage to serve such rubbish
Chicken curry - full of the bits that you can't eat - bones with skin only, bones with gristle, bones that were just bones

The 叻莎 was pretty bad. After my first bite, I actually though about getting the bill and go across the street to eat at 潮民. I did stay and finish it to not waste food, but I couldn't touch the soup. The soup should be the highlight of a 叻莎, but this was a funky yellow salty water, didn't taste any coconut milk. I normally finish all soup, even if it is 味精 soup, but I have to leave this one alone.

My wife had the 肉骨茶, and surprisingly it was bad. The soup tasted wrong, probably because the herbs/medicine mix wasn't right. The meat lacked favor, probably because it was put in the last minute. For 肉骨茶, 楊氏 or 拿督 is much better.

Service, however, is very good. Staff/service was fast and attentive. Price was very affordable.

With a group of 7, we basically ordered all the signature dishes. The most impressive was the Hokkien Mee (I am a huggggggeeeee fan of Hokkien Mee, it's the 2nd best in town and the best gooooooeeeessssss to - Saba).
    Food we ordered:
Black Pepper Crab - it's just toooooo spicy, we could hardly finish the dish. The sweetness of the crabs was overwhelmed by the black pepper, it's a waste with such fresh crabs.
Bakuteh - the soup was a bit warm, just not hot enough but generally speaking it's good.
Hokkien Mee - Two thumbs up!!!
Fried Carrot Cake - ok, just normal stuff.
We ordered a few extra dishes actually but I can't recall al of it since it's been a while.
But to conclude - worth trying!!!

Terrible Service Cries Aug 21, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I went there for lunch last Tuesday as we found quite a lot of good comment in this forum, so decided to have a try.....

The waiter looked like very angry all the time, I asked for the soy sauce, the waiter gave me "whole bottle"......amazing....shocked

The soup was not hot enough and the taste is not even "similar" to the one I ate in Singapore, How come they can "call" themselves 肉骨皇??sad

The food is not good enough, the service is really terrible.....

BKK Set dinner Just OK Mar 05, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Last time, I didn’t get the set because there were various ala carte items I wanted to try and the Salmon Carpaccio in the set meal was sold out.

This time most of the dishes from the set were available.

Starters: Salmon Carpaccio, Stir-fried string beans, Vietnamese spring rolls
Salmon Carpaccio: it was strong in lime sauce.
Stir-fried beans: nice and spicy with bits of dried shrimp and XO sauce.
Spring rolls: just basically vietnamese spring rolls.

The laksa and curry tasted consistently good as before.

The dessert was quite nice and creamy.

Singmalay part 19 Just OK Jan 13, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
From previous reviews, there were comments about McDull, this handsome guy, and some waiter who has an attitude that can instantly change from smiley to sultry and vice versa.

When I got there, was greeted by a waitress, she sat us in the middle of the restaurant, when clearly the other tables were empty, so we changed to one of the tables on the side.

There was only three prominent staff I could remember, the rest were not that memorable, one was female, one which I believed was the one with dipole attitude, but that day I only managed to see the blank face, then the other one which was probably the handsome one.

Originally I wanted to go for the set, but two items were not available, the Salmon carpaccio, and the coconut fried prawns, these were replaced by two less favourable options.
So I ordered separate items, ordered the Prawn Laksa with Taiwanese “Sun Chuk” vermicelli, Penang pork bone tea, and Pan-fried goose liver with tamarind sauce.

    Laksa:
For $42, it was a good price, and there were six prawns, the portion was rather big too.
Finally I had found a laksa that is as good as the one at Katong, also the vermicelli is better here, they used “Sun Chuk” vermicelli, which is thinner and springier.

    Pork Bone tea:
The portion of pork was very stingy, only 2-3 pieces and literally bones. In comparison to pictures posted by other open rice users, there were less ingredients in ours, there were no tree bark slices as shown below by an OR user:

    Photo supplied by restaurant
    http://www.openrice.com/UserPhoto/photo/1/YP/006UWC451351FD6C5D0797l.jpg

as with the photo supplied by the restaurant, there is wolfberries, none in ours.
In both pictures, there is more pork too.
Tastewise, there was a strong herb taste, but none for dong gwai. The taste was more prominent when it had cooled down.

    Goose-Liver:
It reminded me of liver with berry sauce at Mr Steak buffet, both with fruity sauces.
The liver here had an exotic taste with the sourness of Tamirind and pineapple slices, also the pineapple was sliced differently than usual, in horizontal slices. The texture of the pineapple was not crunchy, but slightly soft.

Overall, I felt the Laksa was better than the pork bone tea, so not really king of Bak Kut at all.
Singmalay food to be continued...... Shiok maybe?

Can be better. Cries Oct 30, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
After being visited Saba and Singaporean restaurant last week, I visited this restaurant in Tai Hang. Unfortunately, I think I should visit 7-11 for an microwave sandwich instead.

I thought HK is a very exciting place to taste international food. However, definitely not this restaurant (in my own opinion).

The renovation is ok, however, I really can't give any good comments on their food. The chicken rice is cold, the laksa is ok (but you need to be very hungry), the vegetable are not good enough.

Last but not least, the restaurant's renovation is ok.

However, the dessert are very nice.

Before I go BAKKUTKING restaurant, I really refuse to drink Bakuteh. In my memory, Bakuteh has itself really thick flavor and most terrified is the smell too strong even I could nosed ten feet far apart. This time my friends told me to try a new restaurant of dinking Bakuteh which is located at Tai Hang with named BAKKUTKING. I felt reject and dislike at beginning, but my friends tried hard to recommend therefore I went with them total 4. When I first step to the BAKKUTKING restaurant, I impressed the passionate hospitality by their staff and the comfortable environment feels like home. The most surprise is I didn’t smell any uncomfortable when I already taking seat. We did order Penang Bakuteh which is the manager’s recommendation. I mixed the soup with rice-noodle together, my goodness…I surprisingly how come such delicious of a Bakuteh soup. The soup is clear but I could taste the meat’s freshness sweeties and smelly fragrant. This is the first time I had a positive reaction of drinking Bakuteh. We did also order Pomelo Prawn Salad (freshness of Pomelo), Deep-Fish Mousses Cake (yummy of really elastic of the fish cake) , Fried Morning Glory with Shrimp Paste Kangkung Belacan ( This is really smelly and tasty extremely good with the Kangkung Belacan), Grilled Fish (crunchy of the grilled skin and taste appropriate) and dessert we did order Durian Puff. If you like eating Durian, I strong recommend eating the Durian Puff, you could feel like tasting a real Durian.

好難食, 極失望. Cries Oct 22, 2009

I went to this restaurant on Sunday noon time, and it was CLOSED!

I went their again tonight and found that:

    1. The Bak Kut Tea's soup is tasteless (not even close to any of the bak kut tea in KL!!). Only the color looks like bak kut tea.

    2. The pork inside is tasteless.

    3. The ingredients are chopped in wrong size! Even larger than the meat!

    4. Should use white rice instead of "yellow oil rice".

    5. The Hainanese Chicken rice: the chicken is very cold. It should be warm I suppose.

    6. Very surprise to find Thailand chicken source in the Hainanese Chicken rice! Absolutely wrong matching!

    7. the chicken rice took approximately 20 minutes to be deliver to my table. Ridiculous!

    8. Extremely unexperienced waitress.

    9. Oh, BTW, Bak Kut Tea suppose to be served in hot pot (keeping a very hot status). However, the one that I ordered was a WARM one. Disappointed.

I can't imagine a restaurant name itself Bak Kut "KING" with this quality of food. To be frank, SABAH in Wanchai is hundred times better than Bat Kut King.

Recommended Dish(es):  Only the garlic and raw chili is acceptable.

I have never tried Laksa noodle likes the one served with this restaurant - went to this restaurant tonight as I like Bat kut tay. It took us ages to get the our dinner set we ordered. Some of the other customers made complaint/chased their orders too. The 2 Thai ladies staff were far too new and inexperienced. They shoudl pay attention to their customers like the floor manager. The poor floor manager kept apologising to his customers for all the late delivery or serving. The fish cakes were good and bak kut tay was good too. However, the seafood laksa was really poor. The soup was not boiled with shrimps or was not boiled for hours. The soup tasted like water - it was really bad, not tasty at all. lolhuffy
