my friend chose this restaurant for us, i wanted to go somewhere, child friendly and where we won't be rushed for food
we was given a table in a room as you walked in on you right hand side
a baby chair was given no problem
order was taken quickly
as i've been to japan, i was very impressed with the menu choice, very traditional noodles and pork chop set
however i wasn't having high expectations
food came out shortly, my friend ordered the fried chicken, i ordered a pork chop rice set, cold soba noodles and a few extras
well well well, was the food good? no.... its was BRILLIANT!!!
my god, the last time i had food like that was in japan
the cold soba noodles... it had a bite to the texture, not sloppy as i expected....
the pork chop rice set, very very traditional, where you grind your own sesame, add the sauce, etc... one feedback here...i found the sauce too strong (but in all the entire meal was brilliant)
the pork chop, was juicy...but as we did a catch up with my friend, as the pork chop went cold, it went dry...but still the flavour was there
my friends taro rice was very nice as well
in fact the whole meal was very nice
we had the pork salad
this meal so much reminded me of japan

because we was in a room, the staff didn't come in, ... i wanted to shout the staff, so in japanese i shouted excuse me
... STRAIGHT AWAY i got three replies of *hai*

....ok, upon writing this review i did a google search and found out this restaurant is actually owned by a japanese company.... but still, a great find in hong kong

My mum birthday is on 13/3 , so our family go to Ootoyo restaurant to celebrate her birthday . When I go in this restaurant , I think it is small and crowed . It is quiet and tidy inside . It is a Janpaness food style restauant .
In the restaurant , I ate the Fried Pork Chop with Cabbage Salad . It is very fantastic because the fried pork is golden brown well fried but not burned , and the pork is very juicy . The salad is small but quiet crispy , the vegetable is fresh . And my sister ate the Deep Fried Pork Chop Set , she said that the Deep Fried Pork Chop is crispy and tasty , the set is very yummy .
All the food in Ootoya is fantastic and tasty , the food in there is very fresh too , because they do it , before our eat , not beore last night , so I ate a lot with my family , Although the food are yummy in Ootoya , I think it is too expensive for me .
At last , I think this restaurant (Ootoya) is a good restaurant , and the food inside is tasty too , so I really want you to go to this restaurant and try there food . Hope you will have a good meal in Ootoya restaurant .

Quarry bay is full of places for lunch, but this is one of the notables.

I had the Fried Pork Chop with Cabbage Salad. around $90 for lunch

1 Piece of Pork Chop, 1/4 Cabbage, Soup, Rice, Pickles

The pork chop was well fried. Golden brown but not burned. The pork chop itself is juicy. It has some tendons, but was tender and moist.

The dressing for the cabbage made it a refreshing complement to the fried prok chop, making it less greasy.

Probabaly costs a lot more elsewhere for this quality.

This restaurant not only provide a good environment for you to rest during the lunch time, but also you can absolutely eat full with japanese foods(in case, you must choose the meal set, since you can eat the rice in the meal set more than once until you think there should be enough.)

The quality of the foods in the restaurant is hygenic and wonderful, especially the fried foods, the fried pork meal set I love it so much. I will recommend anyone who love japanese foods, since the type and setting of the meal are close to the japanese style, the fried pork is not so oily, when you eat this and you can taste fresh pork. After that, you can also eat some vegetables for reducing the hot from the fried pork. BUT ONLY ONE problem I would like to issue is a little bit costly about the meal, this may be caused by the rent of the location.Normally, each person should be spent about $100 for a meal.

A traditional and tasty japanese food may not be found easily, but this restaurant surely give you a good answer.

Have been here a couple of times already as its close enough and convenient. A bit surprised that they seemed to have updated the menu a little bit, also they have some Special seasonal items.
As last time reviewed, the food was and still is average - I guess I don't understand the high marks given to here still.
For example:
Fried Tonkatsu -
Great batter, even better than Tonkichi as its more accurate here. The Tonkatsu pork cutlet in Tonkichi is not even good, the Tonkichi batter does not have the trademark 'large and directional breadcrumbs' from using good, freshly grated batter that spread out beautifully. That's why I never rated Tonkichi well as its not even upto Japan's higher end Supermarket tonkatsu specialty shops, let alone restaurants.
Surprisingly, the Tonkatsu here has that correctly fried batter, which is golden in colour too rather than over-fried and brown.
However pork here was really tasteless and a bit dry.
The light yellow MUSTARD that came with the pork together with the sauce, was very bad, powdered type quality with a strange bitter and aftertaste. It is not Japanese Karashi, which is slightly more acidic yet sweet and goes well with things like ODEN and with the Tonkatsu's fruity sauce and the tonkatsu pork. They shouldn't use hot, powdered mustard in my opinion.

Rice -
Very bad Japanese rice in my opinion. No taste, not sticky at all, skinny grains. I had another bowl just to try it again but it was still the same tasteless, too wet rice, just as everytime.
They boasts about using Japanese rice, but unfortunately its very bad quality Japanese rice. Never mind about the unlimited re-fills, I won't even use that option again. Yoshinoya's rice is much much better than here by far, which uses fatter, shorter grains with rice taste and a good texture.

Grilled Hokke Fish -
Fish was under cooked this time whereas it was over-cooked another time. Absolutely no salty taste as it should, it was also fishy. The fish flesh wasn't very fresh at all although that's expected from a slightly dried fish, but because it wasn't cooked well with enough seasoning nor cooked to the desired level, it was very very fishy.
Had to leave it on the dish, unfinished.

Black Sesame Horenso Spinch with Black Beans -
Overly too sweet, not really the right taste for a Horenso Goma-ae dish. Great idea of combining it with black broad beans though, as they are suppose to have a similar taste profile.

Zaru Udon in Timber Box-
Great, as per last time and each time, whether its soba or udon. Great noodle taste, great sauce (although too much bonito flavour in the 'tsuyu' for this visit), great texture.
Can't complain for this price, but I bet if people ate it enough times they will start to discover the problems behind many dishes here, after the novelty wears off. Unfortunately I eat out every day and night and so I'm a bit fussy about the food and look into the smaller details! But generally speaking, this shop is still very recommended, especially for its price and also lack of similar competition shops!

Without being overly critical, I did find this HK branch of the Ooyota restaurant to serve food slightly below my expectations.
First of all, let's be clear that Ootoya in Japan is purely a cheap eat place looking for a cheap set menu for lunch or early dinner. The layouts there are usually very run-down and its a place frequently patroned by business workers at lunch or overseas students.
The HK outlet meanwhile is trying to escape from this fate, with much cleaner and hygienic set ups and quite an attractive, modern Japanese style layout.
The food is quite presentable and suggests it is approaching mid-range restaurant quality, although the problem is that the taste of the food hasn't escaped from its origins.
For example the Fried Chicken Donburi dish had slightly overly thick bread coating and not only that, it was ultimately too crunchy to be enjoyable. Another chicken dish involving a deep frying method as well, also was overly fried and reeked of overly used oil. The sauces were also slightly too oily compared to most Japanese food, suggesting that it hasn't lost its roots of being one of the cheapest restaurant chains in its native Japan.
The rice and soba noodles quality however are excellent, probably one of the best in HK for fast food outlets.
Due to the overly strong taste and thick batters of the food here, however, I must say I have reservations to come back here for their set menus. Even their Hon-Maguro Tuna Rice bowl has the fish marinated in a soy based sauce by default, which is too overwhelming on the palate.
I'm more inclined to order their less heavy options such as Udons and Soba noodles.

Ootoya bomb box: Japanese pearl rice topped with chopped okra, beans, tuna sashimi, grated Japanese nagaimo (mountain yam), raw egg and Natto (Fermented soy beans). All the ingredients have one thing in common, being slimey. The fermented soybeans, were sticky too, and stuck together with spiderweb like strings. But the whole thing tasted really good, the rice was nice and soft, and could be slurped with all the slimey ingredients.

Fried chicken in black vinegar sauce: Rice with fried chicken pieces in light coating, the sauce was tangy, and refreshing, and the vegetables accompanying the dish matched well, such as the lotus roots with a crisp taste.

Fried chicken with African sauce:
I wasn’t sure what to expect of this one, because its name isn’t very Japanese, but it tasted similar to the black vinegar sauce one, not as sour, and not spicy as stated.

Anyway everything tasted good, the only thing that could be improved would be supplying spoons, as this is a popular question arising from customers. Also those irritating flies could perhaps be exterminated!!

Just found this restaurant when I walk pass on Sat. No reservation and looks like serving 'ordinary' Japanese style meal set. When I read the menu and I know it's not that 'simple'. No 'steak' but only 'hamberger' style in which telling me they should be the 'local' ones!
Price is very....competitive with more than $100/set. 6 adults with 2 kids with the bill less than $600!!! Food portion is fair and VERY decent.

Must try the fish and pork chop.

Service is very good indeed!
