Okay, it was lunch time on a Monday, but still, no wait time. The manager guided us to a table for four, even though we were only two, and thoughtfully took away the extra place settings. Already of to a great start, as we had bags to stow on the spare seats.
I wasn't too hungry and was wary of the pizza size. Finally decided to split the mushroom mania pizza with my companion. We had it on a thin crust and ordered the small one.
Thankfully the pizza was not one of those giant American constructions. The base was wafer thin and the mushrooms were, as promised, fresh. The truffle oil added a really luxurious taste.

Beware the Lobster! Just OK Nov 09, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Today, the lunch special contained a lobster soup.

But, I could only finish about 5 spoonfuls. It was far too overpowering: Certainly in lobster (taste, smell) but also seemed a bit too salty.

The pasta was well done, though. It was properly cooked (al dante), and the sauce was pleasant and creamy. What also impressed me is that the meat bits in the sauce were free from fat. Too often many restaurants do not separate the fat - meaning that I will (not keen on clogging my arteries unnecessarily).

Tea was a bit of a disappointment because of the 'plastic stick'. This plastic stick is for children to play and prod the lemon slices; but it is not useful to do much else! As a result the flavour of the lemon slices did not get released into the tea. Neither can you try to pierce the slices as they will 'hold onto' the stick and you will have a messy tug of war on your hands. Really poor design that I have not experienced anywhere else. So, tea not finished because it was bland without lemons

and bland enough that the sugar syrup could not make it any more palatable.

Mr. Davis Cries Feb 28, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Being that pizza is a staple of American cuisine I was delighted to find this place. I was quickly disappointed by the entire meal. First by the one hour wait, which would have been worth it it was at least decent. The garlic bread was bad. The chicken wings were decent and the pizza was pretty terrible. The service was even worse. I ordered a coke and they sold out. Apparently they didn't want to tell me and I went without a drink for most of my entire meal before I asked for an ice tea. Which I accidentally spilled before I took a single drink. Being charged for the tea and not getting a replacement didn't make me feel any better about Shakeys. Never again.

After visiting the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, we went to the New Town Plaza for lunch.
When I first knew about this restaurant, I thought it will be like an alternate for Spaghetti House. Maybe it's because I somehow have some degree of expectation to it, I felt slightly disappointed after dining in here.
We two people ordered two set lunches, including a pizza and a risotto, and ordered a "Big Mama" Trio dish as well.
The set lunches include an appetizer / soup, garlic toast, main dish, and drinks.
We chose one with appetizer and the other with soup.

One of the appetizers was the Shakey's Famous Mojo and chicken wings, each with two pieces, and the piece of garlic toast was served along as well. In my opinion, both were pretty oily. Both were flavorful but my problem with them was that they were indeed a bit too oily.
The garlic toast had garlic paste over both sides of the bread. I think that this made the toast a bit too heavy in the garlic taste. I prefer to be able to taste the aromatic wheat from the bread as well.

The soup was really a disappointment. Firstly, the soup was spilled over the plate when it was served. It's not that the waiter bumped the soup accidentally when serving us, it was spilled over already when it came out from the kitchen. The soup was kind of watery. There is no rich texture in it at all.
A corner of this garlic toast served along was wet. Now this was a bit unacceptable.

    The Shakey's Special - $70 (lunch set)
The pizza in overall was not too bad. But I do have to say there wasn't as much toppings as I've expected, and the toppings weren't distributed evenly on the pizza. The pizza includes minced beef, pepperoni, ham, onions, mushrooms, bell peppers, pineapple, olives, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. My first slice of pizza only includes onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, hams, pepperoni and cheese. Then, at my first bite for the second slice, I can taste rich tomato sauce. I could barely taste the tomato sauce at the first slice but yet the second slice was full of it. I could finally taste the minced beef and olives on the third slice i had. Also, I think we might have made a wrong choice of picking the thin crust. Yes the crust was indeed thin, but then we couldn't really taste the pizza base then. I would try the hand-tossed next time if I ever have the chance to eat here again. In overall, the taste was not bad, the cheese was even actually pretty nice.

Mushroom Risotto with Smoked Salmon - $78 (lunch set)
I liked the sauce of the risotto. It was creamy and rich in texture. The smoked salmon tasted good as well. However, I think the rice in the risotto ain't chewy enough, and that it somehow tasteless. I think the risotto was just not well-seasoned enough, and the texture of the rice was not cooked well enough to give a creamy chewy texture.

    "Big Mama" Trio - $132
This dish includes three types of pasta cooked in three different types of sauce - Spaghetti Bolognese, Penne Alla Carbonara & Angel Hair Pesto. The dish was moderate. The pasta was not overcooked, yet it still hasn't reached an al dente texture. The sauces were pretty okay. In overall I quite liked it.

In the end, was about the drinks. We had coffee and iced lemon tea. The coffee was moderate to me, not too bad, but not particularly good at all.

Not that this meal ain't satisfying, but I think the price was somehow not really worth it. And it's just not as good as I've expected. I don't think I'll return here on my own if I get to pick the place for dining. There were just better options to me than this.

p.s. all the plates, bowls and cups were printed with the word 'Shakeys' on them. That was pretty cute.

Arrived around 6:45 pm on a Friday and was seated immediately ... That's a feat in itself! shocked

Extensive menu, though a little pricey. You could get a pasta dish for dinner for $52, but being an American who's familiar with the chain in the US, I wanted to try their pizza. I ordered a Caesar salad, a 9-inch thin-crust pepperoni pizza and a diet Pepsi. Unlike some pizza places, Shakey's doesn't charge extra for a thin crust. lol

Despite a busy night, the salad arrived in about three minutes. A little heavy on the grated cheese and maybe a little too light on the dressing, but the croutons were crispy, and the taste was just fine.

The pizza arrived within a few minutes of my finishing the salad. It is a thin crust, definitely. If anything, a little too thin and very crunchy. I felt as if I was eating pizza off a saltine cracker. Still, no complaints with the toppings. They did not skimp on either the cheese or the pepperoni. smile

But best of all was the friendly and prompt service. The young woman who took my order was very pleasant. If she had been my only server, I would have tipped her, but it was more of a team effort, and it was actually better than the food. I think they need to fix the thin, crunchy crust and go for something more like a thinner version of their regular crust. Apart from that, it was just fine.

However, the bill was a little too high for a 9-inch pizza, a salad and a drink. The diet Pepsi alone was $22! Outrageous!

Went here for dinner one day and all I can say it was the worst pizza I have come across in Hong Kong.

The menu was a really strange mix of ingredients into "Italian" style dishes.
I decided to go for the safe option and get a margarita pizza. This option was not safe it was awful!
The pizza base was far too thick for the thin pizza base I ordered. The tomato sauce base had no seasoning what so ever, it just tasted of plain tomato, not even a little bit of oregano, salt or pepper was to be tasted. As a result I had to pour a whole jar of pepper onto the pizza just to give it some taste. The cheese that was used was strange as well, not quite mozzarella you would usually find on a pizza. I ended up scraping off bits of the cheese and just eating that. The base of the pizza was thick and stodgy. Not good at all. huffy

On the plus side - Service was good tongue

Convenient... and that was all Just OK Jan 31, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
There was three of us doing some sightseeing, and instead of stopping at a Chinese roadside place, we decided to go back to the roots and have western food

Mr. G is an italian, so we went for a pizza....

    The order was -

    1 x 9" pepperoni (Thin base)
    1 x 9" Margherita (thick Base)
    1 x 12" Pepperoni (Thick Base)

    2 x Hieniken (330ml) and a fresh juice

    The service......
Average - the place was quite full, the drinks came quite quick, but the pizza's
    huffy
Mr. G's came first, the thin base was super - thin, and it took him about 4 minutes to demolish, which was not too cool because, no one else had theres yet.

Bobs came second, his looked great, smelled great and hhe tucked in..... (the 12" Pepperoni)

    But mine......
Took for ever, by the time Bob was on hi last piece and all teh drinks were finished, mine eventually came out, and we are all in agreement that we do like to eat together
Not watch each other and drool
    sad

taste was OK, and quality fine, but so little for so much!!!
    shocked

Leisure Lunch Just OK Jan 10, 2011

    a quick lunch, we tried:
    1. Pizza: Victoria Harbour. With Clams, Scallops, Shrimps, Crab Meat, Onion & Mozzarella Cheese
    2. "Big Mama" Trio: Spaghetti Bolognese, Penna Alla Carbonara & Angel Hair Pesto

indeed, the proportion is not 'big' enough... perhaps it suits those who do not eat much...

secondly, overall quite oily... tasty though. I think it's suitable to be tried once in a while, not all the time... otherwise, not healthy...

I like the pizza here, taste really good when they're hot enough. Very crunchy and reasonable ingredients (not too much, not less) on it.
From the dish of "Big Mama" Trio, Penna Alla Carbonara tastes the best among the other two. It's in right taste and creammmmy enough.

I was afraid to wait a long time so I went there about 6:30pm. No need to wait and chose to sit on sofa.
Service was OK but food was bad. Angle hair was over-cooked. Forzen shrimps and scallops in pizza taste no good.
It's not worth to eat at that price.

however,we all felt disappointed about the food ........~~~the food was not just what we expected. We ordered a set dinner for two people ,included a pizza, soup, spaghetti and salad ....all were tasteless.mad

Choose the Easter Set Dinner $2xx for two which was considered cheap.

can chose 1 starter, 2 claim chouder, 2 main courses and 2 chocolate mousse for dessert

Starter - Chicken something... can't remember the name, but it's a wrap with chicken, veg and cheese. had that last time i came here, i would recommend it, quite tasty.

Maincourse - Lamb chop with herb, the lamb was totally raw huffy you can see chucks of fat, so i asked the waiter to take it back (also i hadn't even finished my soup and they haven't even served up the starter yet!!!) when it came back it was TOO cooked, it's like cardboard and i couldn't taste anything on the lamb, it was completely TASTELESS mad

The solefillet wrapped with bacon - again, pretty tasteless and the bacon was a bit too chewy.

the dessert - chocolate mousse, very solid which is completely not what a mousse should be (it should be fluffy and smooth). The taste was ok, not too sweet.

Never Again Cries Nov 15, 2007
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Have tried out the pizza and pasta in Shakey's yesterday with my wife.

The pasta was dry and the cheese was not melting! The hand-tossed pizza was even worse and it's hard to be chewed.

And the other big problem was the HYGIENE! They put the used dishes right next to the washed dishes, and I saw the staff need to check every single dish before putting on the table. Are they new to operate a restaurant?

It wasted me $17x for a hard-to-chew pizza and a cold pasta. Never again.
