Panfried Yong Yau Foo (Stuffed beancurd)

This was one of the best renditions of this simple Hakka dish. Instead of the meat paste of fish and pork being stuffed into the beancurd, it was actually a thin layer plastered atop the soft beancurd. The meat paste was pan-fried to a crisp surface and it was perfectly done so without it being overcooked. The seasoning was appropriate, with just the right balance of savouriness. The beancurd also had a thin crisp layer wrapping the soft inside. There were several sauces (sweet chili, sweet sauce and chili sauce) that were available at the table to go along with the dishes but even on its own, the stuffed beancurd was well balanced in texture and flavour.

With an old aunt standing at the front of the shop preparing and cooking, the stuffed beancurd cannot get any fresher!

    Verdict: 8.5/10

    Fried Beancurd (Tau Pok)

The 'tau pok' was crisp and fried to a golden brown. Despite the crusty surface to the dried beancurd, the inside was hollow. I would certainly say that this dish was a perfect complement to the above stuffed beancurd. Despite being deep fried, what we enjoyed about this local snack was that it was not overly greasy.

    Verdict: 8.5/10

    Soya beancurd

Despite this being one of the signature products at the shop, we still maintain our stance that the best one tried so far was 'Ah Yuk' at Yuen Long. The lack of soya beans' fragrance was the main flaw and while it was smooth, it was not the smoothest tried, be it the warm or cold version. (we ordered both to try the difference) If you had to choose one, do go for the warm version, for the cold version tasted more 'curdy'.

There was a lady (the one in blue above) who stood at the front of the shop doing takeaway orders for soya beancurd and soya milk.

    Verdict: 7.0/10

Not photographed - we ordered two bottles of soya bean milk (sugar-free) and similar to the soya beancurd, we found that there was a lack of fragrance. We would return for the stuffed beancurd and fried beancurd, but might probably pass on the soya beancurd.
    Supplementary Information:
Expect a really cramped place or share table with other diners. It can be pretty stuffy inside the eatery and with the constant stream of diners coming, you would not be wanting to stay much longer after finishing.

    Hello everyone,

This bean shop is my old favourite in Sham Shui Po, I call it a bean shop because one could actually find a whole raft of bean products in it. This shop seems to be busy 365 days of a year, and one have to try her luck finding a seat at once, seldom although, and also be expected to sit with strangers as a norm.
    Founder's photo on the wall

It is not a place about sitting comfortably the whole afternoon exchanging profundities with your best friends, it seems that the shop opens a small window to the sub culture of city dwellers for whom serving fast and eating fast are something they praise as efficiency, and the “bean shop” is an epitome of it!
How many bean curds are fried each day?
How many bean curds are fried each day?

When I was walking to my seat I yelled (not rude in the context) out for a bowl of cold 凍豆腐花and a plate of煎釀雙拼 , and quite amazingly no sooner had I made my ordering than I found that the two things I had ordered was actually coming along with me, and rested nearly at the same time on my table as I rested my buttocks on my chair!
    Nice dessert

I always love to have the豆腐花without brown sugar (ready to be served on the table), it was so refreshing as ever, although not an intense aroma of bean as some would expect. I think the凍豆腐花and凍豆漿may well be the reason why even in a hot, humid summer afternoon the bean shop without an air conditioner is flocked in by so many and still a dozen or so of them waiting outside!

The fried stuffs is a legend too, if you want more intense taste of soya bean I suggest you order the豆腐instead of the豆卜. Anyway both of them are good, and the meat on top of the 豆腐and 豆卜are tinged with fermented orange skin (a culinary treasure out of fecund imagination of the southern Chinese) which tasted so delicious indeed!

    Supplementary Information:
I am really sad that nowadays a lot of those traditional small scale business are being gradually swept out of Hong Kong, due to redevelopment of old district and high rental as a result of tourists coming to HK from the mainland.

A great little store with a limited variety of excellent tofu options. Mainly Tofu-Fa (a chinese dessert item served both hot or cold), Soy milk, Deep fried tofu, pan fried tofu with fish paste and they also sell tofu by the blocks. I had the Tofu-Fa and it was very smooth, very fresh with a bit of added sugar. The pan fried tofu with fish paste was also excellent. Truly one of the best tofu places around.

Tasty Afternoon Snack Smile Mar 16, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Dating back to when stores specialized in one item, this soy product store sells almost any soy-related food product and makes for a great place to stop for a tasty afternoon snack after wandering around Ap Liu Street.

The main items revolve consist of:
    Soy milk
    Soy gelatin (curd)
    Fried tofu with fish paste

Since this is a specialized store, everything has a much stronger soybean taste than the factory-produced items. Even though there's probably nothing that will scare novices, come with a local to try a variety of items.

Seating is very basic on folding tables and round stools but that's part of the charm.

The soy curd came in a very generous portion with sweet sugar syrup base. If it's not sweet enough for your already, you can add "yellow sugar" from the containers sitting on each table. It's very filling, so get it to share if you want to try other things. The soy curd was very firm and had a slight soybean taste, a good sign that it was made from a high percentage of soy beans, rather than gelatin.

The fried tofu with fish paste is also a specialty and was nicely pan-fried with a crispy skin, but soft tofu on the inside, as well as fish paste on top. Add some of the sweet chili sauce for a real treat.

For less than $20 per item, this place is a steal, although not offering the best environment.

Simple is the best... Smile Nov 25, 2010

love it! I wish all these old-style shops will stay around forever.
A simple bowl of tofu fa, a simple glass of soy milk is enough to charge you up or even make your better.
I could spend hours just watching the staff work in the little room at the back and their speedy services.
Their newer, cleaner store is closer to me but I'd still come here.
Sometimes, the atmosphere and ambiance can make a dish taste better....

Date dined: 22nd Jan 2009 (a year ago! - Do not remember too clearly)

Food: Pan fried Tofu stuffed with minced meat & tofu fa (tofu pudding)

Taste: We ordered a few portions of tofu, o la la - it tasted extremely good. As it was pan fried fresh, it was so hot. But definately so damn tasty. Didnt feel it was oily, but instead felt the tofu was very smooth and with moist. The minced meat (i think it is pork) wasnt salty, didnt over take the taste of the tofu. We couldnt resist how delicious it was and ordered a few more portions. Each portions was fresh pan fried. I also had a tofu pudding, i had it warm, it was definately one of the best tofu pudding i ever had. was so smooth, it melts in your mouth. Wasnt too sweet, could taste the tofu. It was so yummy, we ordered two more to go home to eat!

Environment Definately cant say it is decorated. Bit old. like 70s old hk cafe.Chairs and tables was old. But the food was too good to realize how bad the place was!

Services: The lady there was very nice. She answered you politely everytime u shouted out what u wanted.

OVERALL: I love it. CHEAP , delicious. what more can u ask for?

Came back for a revisit here for a semi-sweet albeit Cold Tofu Curd, just to re-evaluate and to be fair to the shop. Could not bring ourselves to order Hot version, its so damn hot outside!

    Semi-Sweet Cold Tofu Curd:
On this occasion, unlike last time which had no beans taste AT ALL and it was even sour, this time it wasn't sour at all. I think it carried a hint of bean's taste in today's batch but it was very weak. My friend said the same thing. Apparently the sourness comes from it being unfresh upon research - this didn't surface this time. Good!

The texture however was very '鞋' today. Even for a cold version, this shouldn't be the case. My hot one last time was also quite dense.

I would score this time around high '3' and higher if it was more smoother on the mouth!

This is the best? Cries May 30, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Its strange that I have actually been to this shop a long time before, but never knew its name and its fame in HK - in fact, I didn't even realise it had another old shop in 九龍城 under the same name, nor of the other outlets. All I knew was its half hidden location.
    Ordered these:

煎魚肉豆腐 - This was ok I suppose, but the fish part is 'surprisingly' not as good as the one in 人和 shop in Mongkok, despite that being boring as well. The beancurd here was not very smooth, it had a slight sour bean taste but that's expected in Hong Kong. Not aromatic or great asting tofu at all.

Cold Soy Milk - Very sweet. Upon my first sip, I realised I should have asked for non-sugared one. Very little bean taste if any.

Hot Tofu Curd - Utterly disappointing. To claim as HK's no.1 tofu shop or at least that's what everyone says, I was surprised how little tofu smell and taste there was..... the water it came in was also way too sweet, covering its weakness perhaps? Excuse me for being graphic but I tried to suck out the sugar-water in each sip, before tasting the Tofu Curd. I just couldn't detect any good bean taste from it, at most, there was a slight soy bean sourness.

When I ate the same at 人和, there was at least a little trace of bean taste, despite it not being apparent. In fact, I thought this Tofu Curd wasn't even that smooth, compared to some other ones I've had, it was also breaking apart in chunks rather than slivers.

Here, the Tofu Curd Taste and Texture is BELOW STANDARDS.

Perhaps that highlights the different 'tasting' abilities and weaknessed or strong points of each individual. I've noticed that some people seem to think there's a lot of beef taste in Pro-Burger and Freshness Burger, whereas to me Pro-Burger had no meat taste but only Thyme Herb taste, whereas Freshness Burger was rather fake and also had seasoning and herb taste only. Whilst I detected a lot of 米味 in 添好運點心's 腸粉 (at the beginning and also after its gone downhill), a lot of people think there's no 米味 in their Rice Paper Roll. Somehow, everyone has a little bit of differing opinions in their tastebuds. Perhaps, my weakness is in detecting Bean's taste lol..... but surprisingly, I've had slightly better at 人和 so far, also, the tofu's at Apita or CitySuper, or some specialty shops in Kyoto and Tokyo had very powerful tasting tofu's (although eaten as savoury).

Personally, a Crying Face and I'm not influenced by other's scores. Therefore a high '2' at most. However may be I should give it the benefit of the doubt? Since everyone gave it big smiles. Not sure. tongue

It's All About the Bean!! Smile Feb 27, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Over the past 3 visits to ShumShuiPo I have passed through the streets without even taking a look at this old-joint. The first time I did, but because I stood there with half a mouth open (gasping in horror) how this little joint was packed, with people head down gulping on Tofu...I was edged and elbowed out of the way by other prospective customers. The next two times I wouldn't even bother walking near it. It's the weekend and it's always packed. Then came a time I finally MUST go in, so there I was, burly of a man walking pass the packed tables getting myself cozied in one of the wooden stools.

公和 is a staple in this area, and what's more fulfilling than having Sweetened "tofu curd" (I realized that's the closest I can get in English, rather than "Tofu-Flower" 豆腐花, as everyone calls it) for a quick snack, or quick dessert? I have never been a fan of the chilled version, as the chilling somehow makes the tofu denser, affecting the soft texture that's valued in here to begin with. So there I was, a HOT one. Served already with syrup added in, I couldn't help myself but adding a small spoonful of powdered "red sugar". The texture was alright through and through but the strong taste of soy milk couldn't hold the candle for those served at 德興隆 in North Point, or To Kwa Wan's now-closed 貴記. The velvety smooth tofu slipped past my tongue and swiftly slid down my throat. Luckily enough it wasn't piping hot.

Other snacks include Pan-fried Stuffed tofu (煎豆腐)and Marinated "fried tofu" (also called 豆卜 -- dou bok). The pan fried kind was neat white squares of tofu with the thinnest smear of minced fish on the top, and fried at the store front, while the latter was tofu cubes fried and stuffed later, and cooked in a soy-sauce based broth. I preferred the pan-fried more with the golden brown crust on the top, the 'dou bok' was more gooey and chewy but lacking in the proper taste of tofu. Soy milk, however, was perfect when chilled, as the sweetness level was mild.

This joint is constantly packed and the floors could be slightly slippery if you're not careful. The shop also sells fried gluten in packs, soy sheets, and marinated tofu cubes in jars -- all products varied from the basic being of SOY BEAN itself. I will consider coming back every now and again if I'm in the neighborhood feeling the craving for a soy quick-fix.
