after seeing so many good comment of this restaurant, I decide to give it try last Saturday. first of all, try to call to make reservation for a late lunch at 2pm, the receptionist said can't make bookings and can only come on walk in basis- in other words, try your luck. When we arrived, we were told to wait for 30 mins, ok, we went around to see shops around and came back 30 mins and got our table. as we walked in, the restaurant was actually half empty????

We order 2 dishes, one cajun shrimp and one calm/mussel pot. I must say the food taste was really medioce, as the shrimp was not particular fresh although the sauce was tasty, and the clam was full of sands, and the mussle was way overcooked that they tasted so dry. Although the waitress's service attitude was good, the speed of delivery was way too slow from ordering a beer to waiting for our main dishes...

all in all, there is definitely management issue with this restaurant and it should not deserve its current rating.

I was looking for somewhere special in celebration of a birthday of someone special to me. Among all the qualities, the atmosphere was the most important aspect I was searching for. After a thorough search at Openrice, I finally came up with Bubba Gump - perfect location (at the peak!) and special celebration provided (birthday song!) - that's it, I'm going for this one lol I called in to reserve a table a week in advance, hoping to get a table by the window-side for the gorgeous view of HongKong. Though the lady on the phone said it would be possible, it was largely disappointed knowing that when I arrived punctually, we were given the sofa seats which were not by the window-side! huffy Argh, not a good start for a birthday celebration since the reason I came all the way to the peak was to enjoy the view of the peak and the efforts I made for calling in a week earlier! Bad first impression.

So I read from rest of the reviews that one of the gimmicks of Bubba Gump is that instead of calling for the waiters, you get to flip the board to indicate your preferrence, and the phrases are in reference to the famous movie lines from the Gump movie? (Not that I have watched it yet) However, we did not find the board useful at all. Even though we flipped it quite a few times, the waiters seemed not to notice it as they walked pass our table.. I guess it's only a gimmick afterall..

I did my homework before I brought the special someone here. I ordered the most famous dishes recommended by the fellow community.
    Traditional Shrimp Cocktail
    Traditional Shrimp Cocktail

The first to arrive was Traditional Shrimp Cocktail. The portion was just right for 2 people. The shrimps were icy cold and served with BG cocktail sauce. The sauce was great! I love dipping shrimps with BG cocktail sauce. However! A big complaint must be said was that the big shrimps were not that clean afterall! shocked
The black marks as indications of unclean!
The black marks as indications of unclean!

Look at the black dots indicated at the shrimps! According to the special someone, the black dots indicated the uncleanness to the shrimps. Probably an unthorough wash or the shrimps themselves are not clean initially. It was a misfortune that the special someone found this one and got a bit disturbed by it - something that I would never hope the birthday one to voice it out. sad I would not recommend you to order this dish if you get the chance to come here.

Enough complaints, now to the recommended!
    Cajun Shrimp
    Cajun Shrimp

The most popular ordered dish here must be Cajun Shrimp! And OHHH YESSS the dish was super tasty! The sauces that were used to marinate and deep fried the shrimps were extremly intriguing and wild in flavour that could leave the everlasting enjoyment in your tongue! So delicious that was "finger-lickin good"! lol
Fantastic Mama Gump's garlic bread basket!!
Fantastic Mama Gump's garlic bread basket!!

Yet! However much we loved the Cajun Shrimp, our favourite dish of the night was the Mama Gump's Garlic Bread Basket instead. I must say, the garlic bread was so good that it perhaps was the best I ever had so far in my existing memory! The garlic bread was freshly taken out from the oven, pipping hot when served. The garlic sauce was heaviy spreaded on the bread. I totally love the garlic smell. tongue tongue Perhaps that explained why we ordered an extra dish of garlic bread on top of the Cajun Shrimp's.
    Shrimp Rigatoni
    Shrimp Rigatoni

The portions were rather small at Bubba Gump. So you might find yourself not having enough after two dishes, it would be a good idea to order a plate of pasta. In our case, we ordered a Shrimp Rigatoni - "tender sauteed Shrimp, Rigatoni, and fresh Spinach are tossed in a creamy Sundried Tomato Pesto Cream Sauce, and topped with fresh Parmesan Cheese". Quite wonderful indeed. Though I will much, much prefer it to increase its portion and minimised its cheesy-ness.
Lt. Dan's Punch and Louisiana Lemonade
Lt. Dan's Punch and Louisiana Lemonade

Having eaten all of the "taste-heavy" dishes, it was a must to order some drinks. And alcohols were needed for birthdays! We ordered a Lt. Dan's Punch and a Louisiana Lemonade, and funny enough, the portion for drinks were HUGE here! A king-sized cup for each of them. If you aren't a good drinker or you just feeling slightly thirsty, I will definitely not recommend you to order one single size for yourself.
"You Have To Share" Chocolate Cake
"You Have To Share" Chocolate Cake

And finally, finally, as the meal reached to the end, it was time for the birthday cake! I made sure I arranged the birthday cake from the moment I booked the table, to the moment I arrived on-site. I thought I had made careful calculation to every aspect, but who knew that the restaurant mispelled the name! Oh gosh what a careless mistake! sadsad Anyhow, the special birthday celebration arrangement that Bubba Gump had was that as the cake was served, a group of the waiters and waitresses would come by your table and sing the birthday song out loud! Not that every waiter or waitress seemed enthusiastic, but at least a few of them were especially energetic which was nice to see. The "You Have To Share" Chocolate Cake was huge for 2 to eat, but very delicious and sweet! We couldn't finish it and packed the cake for takeaway, and I guessed the slogan of the cake was right indeed. Haha.

I wouldn't say that Bubba Gump was perfect for a birthday celebration venue, but it was worth of a try.
Yet, I must say the portions were rather small, and they cost more than deserved. The services were only average - carelessness were often spotted. But for the sake of a birthday celebration, I will just put these things aside. But no more next time!
    Supplementary Information:
If you're planning to come here for birthday celebration, make sure that you book the table in advance and specially ASK for your preferred table, say the peak view, and make sure they WILL provide you one. Also, make sure they don't spell the birthday boy/girl's name wrong!

bowlWith Chilled Shrimps, Fried Shrimps, Spicy Chicken Strips, Hush Pups and Popcorn Shrimps. This was surprisingly really enjoyable. The fried shrimps and especially the popcorn shrimps were literally bursting with shrimps taste - which was surprising because with all the cheapo frozen quality shrimps/prawns on the market, one surely didn't expect these to have such strong prawny flavours! Addictive lol The Hush Pups are also a more novelty item in Hong Kong and fried well. The blue cheese dip for the chicken strips was also done well, probably better than the chicken as I couldn't tell what kind of protein it was.

bowlPear and Berry Salad. With charbroiled Chicken, Raspberries, Strawberries. At $120, this was humongous and also quite refreshing. Another quite special dish and especially pleasing to girls, or to myself personally since I like girly stuff too haha mad lol

bowl Stuffed Shrimps with Crab Meat - Didn't exactly like this dish, which came with Jasmine rice. It wasn't stuffed per se, but more like a prawn was wrapped around Crab Meat dowsed in a creamy garlicky cheese sauce. The flavour was decent, but overall a bit too mealy at $180. Not going to order this again unless they improve. sad

bowl Corona Rita - This was already on our sights as we were quite impressed with how this drink came with a Beer Bottle that was inverted, but feared that this might create a mess if it started dripping out! Well Mexico is becoming a developing and rich nation nowadays, so I am sure their beerheads came up with this brilliant idea - the bottom is like a Margarita drink but the inverted Corona keeps topping up your drink but vacuum principles prevent it from spilling. Surprisingly enjoyable. At around $128, this is actually quite cheap as it is 2 large drinks combined into one!

    ******************************
I actually thought this would have been a 'blahhhh' type of meal, but the food standard was actually quite decent and better than many so called American bar restaurants in town. Counting in that unbeatable view from the top of the Victoria Peak but without paying any premium price - I think this is a bargain dating restaurant indeed and it is also FUN and casual to dine here too!

    Will be back!

Booking: smooth coz reservation was made in advance
Ambience: OK LA.. view was alright but too many "big 6" people... noisy + crowded
Service: Average. Not too good, not too bad. Price: OK LA..

Good: A couple of female servers are quite good looking.

Bad: The so-called cocktail drinks taste like cough syrup. In fact, my cough was indeed cured after drinking.

As there is no other branch in Hong Kong finally came here to try the notorious Bubba Gump.

Ordered the ‘run across America’ starter, a selection of prawns, and chicken, the quantity of prawn was more than expected.

As for the prawn rigatoni, there was lots of sauce, and the grilled prawns in that dish were naturally sweet.

Also ordered the stuffed shrimp, which was a rice pile in the centre of dish with butter sauce and cheese, the mashed fish was basically cod.

    everything is perfect for me
atmosphere is good, there are many interesting stuff about bubba gump, example:100 different bottles of spicy sauce, nice music etc.
there is not much expectation for dining out recently but this time made me surprise.
'the linguine scampi was excellent, pasta was al dente! the lemon butter sauce is really yummy, not too sauce not too oily, shrimps of course perfect for sure!

esp the bread pudding, i love that so much, just fit to the point!

because of excellent food, music and condition, services are not important anymore although there is nothing to complaint with the service.

oh my god i hope i can try again when i back to hk...

by the way, the glasses light up for each mocktail / cocktail...funny

It's really an economical dinner in a touristic spot!!
The price is not expensive, food quality is better than those restaurants with similar ranking (but surely it cannot be compared with fine dining). Shrimps are quite fresh and the restaurant is full of gimmicks, we will have surprise especially if you like Forrest Gump! We've ordered 1 drink and 3 dishes, which were too much for two already.
    - Mango sparkling (so-so)
    - Caesar salad (nice with fresh vegetables but a bit salty)
    - ? spicy shrimp (nice taste but too oily)
    - Shrimp's heaven (Out of expectation! 3 out of 4 types of shrimps are nice!)
Great view from the Peak to the Victoria Harbor!! The light is quite dim and the atmosphere is nice!! Surely we'll be back and try other dishes in the future!
    Highly recommend to young couples!

Yesterday's afternoon, what a sunny day, honey and I went to the Peak for a nice lunch and walk! We decided to visit this restaurant for I love the movie, "Forest Gump" so much and shrimp dishes sound good too.

Environment - good, cozy, like other American style family restaurants. Posters and props of Movie ' Forest Gump" are found anywhere! Marvelous view of coz!!! U could take a paramonic view of HK!

Service - the chinese server was quite good, she was patient enough to tell us how to use those iron service plates on the table illustrating which service you want to have. But some philippino servers were not professional enough. Still, you would feel comfortable to have meals here.

    Food -
    (1) Stuffed Shrimps With Crabmeat - there were shrimps and crabmeat cakes with very very tasty buttery garlic sauce served with bread and rice. So yummy!!!! The shrimps were fresh and crab cakes were juicy! But a bit salty!
    (2) Chicken sticks with Cheese Dressing- ok taste but tooo salty, should need improvement.
    (3) Mango Sparker - tasted like orange juice.

Inb general, it was quite good to have a trial over here. Esp when u wish to celebrate BD/anniversaries, coz the view was fantastic. Plus the food was not bad too!!

I have heard and seen Bubba Gump in Texas, USA, but had never tried it. Girl friend and I were looking for a place wit atmosphere, so we picked Bubba Gump, and were surprised by the quality and quantity of their food, not to forget to include the excellent service.

We were greeted by a young and cheerful hostess, then were showered by streamline of attention. Good job, staff.

My girl friend had grilled fish ( I think it was salmon) and cajun shrimp, while I ordered seafood in cream sauce over rice. The grilled fish and cajun shrimps were very tasty, spicy shrimps (cajun) but not peppery hot. But the one I liked the most was the cream sauce over rice, youcan taste the fresh cream in every bite.

The view from the restaurant is also breathtaking. Overlooking the harbor with all the light shows along both coasts, certainly strikes a romantic note.

To sum it up, this is a great restaurant for dates and celebrating occasions. A little pricey, but worth every penny of it.

Good Choice at the Peak Smile Feb 09, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
All in a sudden we went to the peak on a weekday ... for refreshment.

It is a funky restaurant, American style. And if you want sight-seeing, that is a good place if you sit by the windows.

We ordered the Cajun Prawns and BBQ Ribs. And they are the right choices.

Cajun Prawns: The cajun sauce is yummy with the prawns and the garlic bread aside. The spicy cajun is about right and we even dip the remaining sauce with the bread. And the dish is well-suited as an appetizer.

BBQ-Ribs: Good. We always prefer the meat easily tear away from the bones, and they make it. The BBQ sauce is balanced that will not oust the taste of the ribs. And the ribs is well-made. Also the fries is not bad.

Our neighboring table is having desserts and they look very tempting ... just that I want to go downhill for coffee. We promise not to miss the dessert next time.

    Great Shrimps!  Jan 28, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I've been to the one at Universal Studio in LA and enjoyed the food sooo much so we've decided to give this one in HK a try.

They are able to maintain the same quality in food but gosh... the service was an eye opener.

The restaurant was not busy but they tried to put all 2s to very small tables, so I've asked to change (and so did the other couple). The manager agreed to let us change but with a very black face + a comment with her waitresses that "everyone wanted to change their tables right now!"

Other waitresses service were expected.. next to none.

Food was great though. We ordered the combo appetizers, the shrimp broth (the soup was great! Tasted like Bouillabaisse! Nice surprise) and the cajun + garlic shrimps. All were very enjoyable.

When we were ready to go, I went to the bathroom.... I was almost too embarrassed to go inside! It was packed (yes, PACKED!!!!) with waitresses getting changed (It was around 2:30pm.. getting changed???) and then some were majorly complaining about the restaurant manager and gossiping.. When they saw me, they just carried on their gossiping... I felt really really awkward. This is a first for me in any restaurant!

Anyways, if you can ignore the indifferent waitresses, black face lady manager, then the place is a fun place to go.

I love this restaurant. I've been twice and I'd definitely go back next time I visit the Peak.

We didn't book in advance so didn't get a window seat, but got a nice little table at the corner which suits me fine.

Once you walk into the restaurant, you feel like you're stepping into the movie and it's one of the most American restaurants in HK. The Forrest Gump theme is really fun and the decorations and displays all add to the atmosphere.

    We ordered:
(drink) Mama's favourite - DELICIOUS with kahlua and ice-cream, tastes like milkshake, girls will love it (you can take the glass home afterwards)!
(appetizer) American Seafood Sampler - the shrimps are fresh and tasty, you get to try everything, lovely~
(main) Steak & Shrimp combo - standard but the steak is nicely done and the shrimps are also good

Great service and very speedy with the dishes, waiters+waitresses are very friendly and speak english and cantonese.

One bad thing is that it gets quite noisy on a busy evening, and the tables are very close together...

I'd recommend Bubba Gump to everyone!!

Just can't help writing a comment for this restaurant!
The food is nice and tasty, though I like the way they present the courses more~ The environment is really good, full harbour view and with the light slightly dimmed. But what I really want to say is the service! I arrived 45 mins late and they still reserve that sea view table for me and the waiters are funny and friendly! All in all, one of the best restaurants I have ever been to!

Today I went to this place called Bubba Gump in the Peak for lunch. The theme of the restaurant is surrounding the character "Forrest Gump" as he was in the movie.

The venue was excellent, with excellent view onto the Victoria Harbor + HK + Kowloon Scenary. I was arranged a window seat with outstanding outlook onto the harbor!!!

The service was very good. A waiter came immediately after I sat down, and asked me whether I know how to use the "Run Forrest Run" or "Stop Forrest Stop => Call for waiter" sign on the table. Of course I knew, and I immediately turn my attention onto the menu.

They have several drinks +/- alcoholic available, and most of the looked great. However, the price was quite expensive $50 up!!!! The good thing was that you can bring home a new glass with "Bubba Gump" logo... (Quite good of an idea!) I've chosen the Bailey alcoholic drink, and it was excellent... b/c it's cold enough to quench my thirst!!

For appetizer, I've ordered the American sampler which included: 1. Cocktail Shrimp, 2. Deep fried Calamari, 3. Popcorn Shrimp, 4. Onion Rings, 5. Coconut shrimp with 3 different sauces (Cocktail, Spicy, Mayonnaise) => The cocktail shrimp was the best, for the others, it's just average... worse was onion rings... TOOOOOO dry and tough sad

I've also ordered a Clam Chowder... but it's just average.... not as creamy as Outback restaurant... just a lot of salt into it.... However, the clams were quite tasty though....lol

Main course.... I've ordered Baked Seafood Rice... DELICIOUSsmilesmilesmile The mixture of cheese + seafood was excellently blended together with the rice beneath. So good that I finished the whole thing within 10 minutes...

Finally came the pasta... It's a little too spicy, but I guessed some of you may like it... It's creamy with a little Cajun style with Shrimps... Shrimps were tasty though... smile

For dessert... most of them looked great, and I loved the cheesecake most... It's really worth trying it with more people.. so that tyou can get to taste different ones.!!!

Overall speaking, I strongly recommend the Baked Seafood Rice, the Cocktail Shrimps, and Desserts.... and remember to get a souvenir glass as well ^_^

P.S. Remember to bring camera to take down the great scenery with the one you love tongue

That was 01/10/07, thought no much thoughts about hk/mainland china, but still we got fireworks on that night.

Rang the restaurant and asked whether I could have a seat which was able to watch firework, they said they would do there best, but no gaurantee, well, I guessed the answer was about "yes" so booked a table at 8pm.

Cajun shrimps was good, the sauce was spicy but shrimps were a bit too small I guess. Garlic bread was excellent! It was the best garlic bread I have ever tried.

Baked seafood with cream cheese sauce was good as well. But again, not very outstanding.

We have ordered mango sparkler, that was quite good to me, very refreshing. And ordered a chocolate desert ( sorry forgot the name of that), very sweet, I think that was fair.

Service was very good. They were all helpful and friendly. For food, I like Hardrock/ Ruby Tuesday more. But definitely a good restaurant for nice view/ a date!!
