tasty curry bread bowl  Mar 15, 2013

This may be a daunting venue for foreigners who don't know Cantonese or how to read it. But never fear.
I stepped into the Cooked food market food court and was worried there was no English wording anywhere. Luckily for this food stall restaurant there were pictures and the staff knew English. Phewf!
For $62HK i got the delicious yellow beef curry bread bowl and drink set after seeing reviews about this on open-rice.
I got take away as the food court was packed full of people.
It was how curry should be- tender and big chunks of beef, full flavored yellow curry soaking into a delicious fresh bread roll.
Word of warning though- there was a lot of beef tendon in the curry- but i don't actually mind that so it suited me just fine.
This was a filling meal, it also came with a sweet vegetable, tomato based soup.
I will definitely be a return customer here.

Porkchop bun Smile Jul 27, 2011

I came here after seeing abundant of reviews about curry and I love curry. I did wanted to order the curry bread bowl but it seemed too much since I wanted to try the porkchop bun too. As I was looking at the menu I saw that they have porkchop bun with curry sauce. PERFECT! I get to try both. It was $24 and I believe it includes a drink because I got ice lemon tea and the total came to be $26. I really enjoyed the bun. When the bun first arrived I had a hard time finding the curry sauce because I was expecting it to be oozing out of the sandwich. In fact it was just a light spread. But when I took my first bite I was taken aback because they curry was so flavorful you don't need a lot. The porkchop was tender and juicy. The crust of the bread had a thin layer of crispiness perfection while the inside was fluffy and soft. What a simple dish yet so delicious. I do have to say that I did wait kinda long for my food to come for Hong Kong standards. Usually in Hong Kong your food some out so fast. I'm not complaining about the wait but just surprised. But hey they are yummy and busy. tongue

Hidden on the 2nd floor of the Community Centre next to Langham Place (there's actually a footbridge connecting the two buildings), this Macau Cha Chaan Teng is one of the more interesting ones in the Cooked Food Market. If you're in the area and looking for a cheap eat, drop by to take a look.

This booth is famous for 2 dishes: Curry in a bread bowl (with your choice of beef brisket, chicken, pork, pork neck, chicken or crab) or beef brisket and macaroni in tomato soup.

Beef brisket and macaroni in tomato soup costs only $29 for a set including a hot drink and Macanese roll. The broth was surprisingly free of oil and had a very strong tomato taste and there was a good amount of macaroni. Unfortunately, the beef brisket consisted of a few minuscule cubes. The roll with condensed milk (+$2) was quite large, although a bit dry.

We got the curry chicken in a bread bowl, which is brought to your table 10 min after you order. You get the bread bowl with the filling and the curry sauce separate. For only $48, it's possibly the cheapest in Hong Kong. The curry was a very strong Macau-style curry, which isn't my favorite and the chicken was a bit too fatty. (The beef brisket is probably a better choice.) It's enough for 2 people to share as a light lunch.

It's not a must-try, but unbeatable for the price. The downside is that one of the items was loaded with MSG, leaving us feeling thirsty for hours afterwards.
