Soho Spice has become one of the most popular Thai restaurants in Soho, especially with the SuperMonday offer. The décor features exotic design and it has an open area within the restaurant. However the spacing is rather packed.

A quick note on the services, it was exceptionally horrendous. First of all, we had a booking, but we waited 10 minutes before we were seated. Secondly, put us on the outdoor area without asking (red-rain). Then they got our orders wrong. And last, got the billing wrong and they put up with an argument with us that they are right. Oh well, whatever, we just want go home, in this kind of weather. Hence we settle the bill; we paid about HK$150 more. The 1 point in the service section is for their smile.

Tom Kha Kai chicken in coconut soup (4/10)
The chicken broth was pretty delicate and rich. The soup in general was full of the Thai spices and great balance between the coconut milk/cream, but if could have put more. The chicken was fairly tender as well. A great start to the dinner.

Duck breast, stir-fried with green pepper, ginger in green curry and crispy basil sauce (3/10)
The green curry paste wasn’t perfectly made. First of all, not enough heat, don’t know what kind of green chilies they were using. This was the first green curry I ate has no lemongrass flavour. Actually, too much were missing, don’t want go on forever.

The duck was tender and fairly seasoned. The peppers were over cook either, but in general the taste wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t authentic as they claimed.

Grilled king prawns cooked in Vietnamese spices and herbs with chili lime sauce (4/10)
It was 3 massive tiger prawns, however the presentation was kind of hmmmmm. The prawns were very nicely marinated; it was rather refreshing with the chilli lime sauce. The prawns were grilled nicely, kept the texture and juiciness. Great dish.

Other than the services, this is not a bad place for Thai food, but Lil Siam is still my top pick in Soho. If wasn’t for a change/SuperMonday offer, not sure if I would be back.

Give me a thumbs up if you like it!

    Fantastic set lunch.
Mixed chicken dumpling soup with rice vermicelli and seaweed was excellent. Vegetable deep fried prawn spring roll was to die for. Staff were very polite, courteous and patient. Atmosphere is very pleasant.

Soho Spice Smile Mar 24, 2012

Went to Soho Spice with my mate on a Saturday night to grab dinner because i have heard good things about this restaurant from another mate of mine!
Got there at about 9pm, it was very crowded but thankfully they managed to squeeze us in. We started off by ordering some white wine while browsing through their extensive menu smile
The waitress was friendly and polite. Not only that, she was very helpful as well! She recommended us the popular dishes. We liked all the things we saw on the menu so it was quite hard to choose. But we got the pork neck starter in the end, which was amazing!! it was grilled to perfection! The texture was very good and very tasty.
For my main course, I got the beef tenderloin red curry. OMG it was soooo good, the curry was tasty and the beef was soft and chewy. To my surprise, the serving was massive, it could be shared between two people!! My mate ordered duck breast and garlic prawn, both were amazing as well.
As expected, we couldn't finish all the food because the servings were too big! but it was soooo good as well. With the attentive service from the staff, we had a great dinner. It was probably one of the best thai restaurants i have been, i love the food, the ambience and the service was great. Looks like I will be going back there very soon!

Better than expected Smile Nov 15, 2011

The last time I was here was 2 years ago. Food together with the price at that time didn't impress me. This time around, however, I was quite satisfied smile

The group of us ordered 3 appetizers to share (Deep-fried soft shell crab with papaya, mango and chili lime dressing; Green papaya and mango salad, and Pomelo and crispy shallots salad). I liked the pomelo salad the most as the pomelo was fresh and sweet and also topped with shallots and peanut pieces. Didn't try the soft shell crab so couldn't comment on it, but friends seemed to have enjoyed it.

We then ordered 4 main courses to share, including the lamb rack curry, seafood curry, king prawns, and pan-fried seabass.

    - The lamb rack curry came in generous portion. 4 huge pieces, though a bit fatty, were tender and with a slight hint of lamb meat taste without being overpowered by the curry
    - Pan-fried seabass also came in generous portion, or 2 thick pieces of fillet. The fish was, again, tender and not dried.
    - The seafood curry, by comparison, didn't form as good an impression, although there were several pieces of squid, 1-2 pieces of fish, 1-2 crab meat, 1-2 pieces of shrimps, plus a few pieces of veggie like broccoli and eggplant
    - King prawns scored the lowest in terms of the value-worth scale. 3 pieces of prawn but not much meat to consume

Of course, with Thai / Vietnamese food, one bound to consume a lot of salt and get thirsty afterwards, so the rating below doesn't take such fact into consideration.

The restaurant was quite full even on a Monday night, but the service was decent (and didn't kick us out as we remained seated and chatted tongue)

With the Super Monday promo (main course buy 1 get 1 free), the total bill came out to be ~$650. Not bad at all!

The environment of Soho Spice is comfortable but the food was uninspiring and lack quality execution.
pomelo with shallots - the pomelo was not juicy at all and the combo was not that good
prawns - the prawns were large but completely overcooked and mushy
chicken pad thai - the chicken in this dish was poorly prepped and had a bunch of connective tissue and fat still on it. overall very greasy dish.
mango sticky rice - this was the only semi-decent dish

Catch up dinner @ Soho Spice Just OK Nov 03, 2010

It was fortunate that we made a booking even though it was just a normal Tuesday night. The place was fairly full by 8pm.
Dim lighting in the restaurant and there was an open roof area at the back where we sat.
Service was fine and it wasn't pricey. The salads were quite nice as well.
    smile
Downside was the main hot dishes. Most were quite flavourless especially the Pat thai. Seafood wasn't good neither.

Super Monday in Soho - buy 1 get 1 free for all main course in a lot of different venues. So I went to shop around on Elgin Street with my co-worker after work. Finally we arrived at Soho Spice, which has got a lot of good comments from my friends - so we decided to give it a try.

We ordered the Green Papaya Salad ($62), Mixed Vegetable Thai Green Curry (around $90) and Vegetable Dumpling with Baked Egg Plants (around $90).

The Green Papaya Salad - very fresh - very herby. However the green papaya salad was too soft - I wonder why. Usually it's a bit more crunchy. But overall it tastes very well.

Mixed Vegetable Thai Green Curry - tasted excellent. thumbs up! Not too heavy. With a lot of fresh ingredients. The tofu looked home-made, freshly deep-fried, although I am not sure if this was the case. Definitely an excellent choice for vegetarians. Quite cheap too (on super Monday).

Vegetable Dumpling with Baked Egg Plants - didnt know it was deep-fried and I am never a big fan of deep-fried stuff. So I didn't really like it. However the eggplant soaked in the sauce tastes quite nice. The dish is a bit heavy for me tho.

Also order fresh apple juice and young coconut - freshy and helps to wash away the heavy taste of the dumpling sauce.

I should also mention that they have very friendly and attentive services.

Dinner party Just OK Nov 16, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Came here with 10 other people for a gathering dinner party.
Many things were ordered, and I was able to try the following:
    Grilled steak in Red Curry
    Chicken in Yellow Curry
Fried Noodles in Yellow Curry with grilled chicken
Grilled Chicken Breast in Tamarind Sauce
    Vietnamese Crabmeat and Asparagus Soup
    Ginger rice

The beef the in red curry was well-cooked but surprising tender and lean at the same time, paired with the ginger rice very well.
The chicken curry also had eggplant, but the highlight was the flavour of the sauce. It was coconutty and mildly spicy, very suitable with plain rice.
The grilled chicken came next, and i was disappointed by its lack of taste. Not worth its price at all either as its sides were inedible (raw onion?)
The noodles in yellow curry sauce was also tasty, but a bit too mild in spice for my liking - I like spicy things! The noodles were not the thin pad thai noodles but a bit like transparent hor-fun?
The soup was extremely tasty, with a hint of coconut milk that suited the sour and slightly spicy taste. It was also surprising generous with the amount of crab meat given.
For dessert we had our own cake so we didn't get to try anything from this restaurant but anyway there were only several choices...
