Satisfies hotpot cravings! Smile Feb 27, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I made reservations the day of for a party of 5 with no problems. The 5 of us were actually given a private room to ourselves. What VIP service!

They didn't give us a time limit, but being in the room it was more difficult to get service for sauces, ordering, and the bill.

There were many broth options so we got a half/half broth with pork broth and a tomato broth. The tomato broth had a unique flavor, slightly sweet. I personally preferred the pork broth more.

Something unique that this Tanyoto does that I haven't seen at other hot pot places is they have a premixed bowl of ingredients for your sauce that has cilantro, hot sauce, and a few other things. Then when the broth arrives they ask you which broth you would like for your sauce and they add it to the bowl for you to dip your food in. I personally didn't like that there was so much cilantro. Separately we order two sauces - Satay Sauce smile and soy sauce. The sauces were $10 each. We didn't realize that the soy sauce also cost $10(!!) until after we ordered it, though it did seem to be a special one, as it didn't taste like regular soy sauce one would have at home.

The portion size of the ingredients was good, and tasted fresh.

I particularly enjoyed the frozen tofu, lamb, and fatty beef.

It was a Friday, and we ate at about 7:30pm/8p. I was told that after 9pm it was all you can eat, which would be a good deal if you could wait until later for dinner. Not sure about the cost for all you can eat, though.

Disclaimer: The restaurant isn't actually on Johnston Street as the address indicates. (Good thing my friend had been before, or else we would have been a-searchin'!) By MTR, when you come out of Wanchai A3 exit, turn left and walk to the corner and cross the street. Cross the street and the restaurant is about 2 stores to your left. There is an opening with a podium right inside. You are actually on the street perpendicular to Johnston - sorry, there is no street name on Google Maps. On Google Maps, it is shown there as Tan Yu Tou, right next to the Tung Hing Building.

Afternoon Tea Smile Sep 12, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Tanyoto's decor in traditional Chinese theme and cleanliness are a cut above. There are private rooms in the first floor to cater for 4 to 6 person had a cozy meal. Our family always come here for a decent dim sum after 2 pm. We need to got a ticket before 2 pm. The price is slash cut in the afternoon. The wide selection of dim sum, as they are made-to-order, the quality was always fresh and delicious. We like the steamed dim sum and buns. We also like their fried rice and spicy beef stomach. They are all well seasoned and pretty good. Those noodles in soup was not our expectation. Please be suggested to save room for dessert at the end of your meal if you have sweet tooth, try the glutinous rice dumpling and those cold pudding. The staff was attentive and quick re-fill our tea pot when we are in need.

Frustrating hot pot Cries Jan 03, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
We have been to Tanyoto quite a few times and now I remember that the time before we weren't very impressed either but thought that was a one off. However, this time was our last time even though I am normally very relaxed about service and not demanding at all.

I remember when they first opened, they would show customers how to mix the sauce and even mix it for each customer, now the sauce ingredients are in the bowls on the table with no explanations. When we were ordering, there were some things we were unsure of and the waitress never came back with the answers. Finally, the bar tender had to answer as she overheard.

We ordered the mix pot, chilli and spicy and the standard soup. The heating system didn't work and the standard soup side never boiled. We told 2 people and they both just said wait. Well, an hour and a half later, it never boiled. This was frustrating for those of us who didn't want a chilli meal but ended up having to cook in the spicy side and then washing it in the soup side. The spicy stock was not tasty, nor chilli but had lots of bits of spicy and lumps in it. I spooned out a whole bowl of oil which was floating on top. Some orders were forgotten and when they added stock, they poured it all over the table and some of the raw food too and didn't apologise. The beef dishes were small and the beef shin was tough and cut too small.

Only the mixed mushroom basket, the mixed octopus and prawn balls, the shrimps and their signature grey noodle sticks, potato slices were good.

Since the attitude of the staff is so off hand and not caring whether anything works, I don't think we will come back again. There are many other hot pot places waiting for us to try. This place is just too unslick for a Hong Kong eatery.mad

    terrible service  Mar 10, 2009
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Food was not bad - but the service was absolutely terrible! It was my friends birthday and at the end of the meal, the waiter cleared up the table. Then the manager came over and just dumped the birthday on the table, with the cake STILL IN THE BOX AND RIBBON. What was his problem? huffyNormal people would open the cake from far away and light the candle before walking over.

If you can ignore the service and just eat the food, you will be fine.:

Time and again, you do not get what you order in this restaurant in the all-you-can-eat time session. Surprisingly, they give you one kind of dumpling no matter what you order... and the waiters done even know what they are talking about... I would never go there..

Went there for the first time the other day. There were 9 of us and they seated us at a round table with ONLY 1 STOVE which disappointed me.
Tried tomato soup base and 麻辣鍋. They both are pretty good, so is the beef and most other dishes. Service was so-so, overall I'd say it was a positive experience.
