dinner below expectation Just OK Dec 28, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
~ as meet best friends during her busy period, we prefer Tsuen-wan more than Mongkok, so I think it's a good chance to try that one after we try the original one

near the park in Tsuen-wan over years ago.
~ we order 3 from set-dinner included pork-leg, roast lamb & Sirloin (around $120 @), the rest which is the most expensive tonight is steak with salad ($138), the waitress write down our order & repeat it very slow & feel scare (without confidence?!)
chopstick a bread-basket (normal texture without surprise)

come without notice, when we feel aweful & ask why, the waiter present his unpolite black-face without facial expression to say it's free-of-change?mad
    ~chopstick cream of mushroom soup

come after 5 mins: it taste abnormal & sour so I give up after not more than half bowlmad
    chopstick~ 3 main-course

    come as they are set-dinner at first: pork-leg in spicy sauce is not bad as a whole , but the sauce can be improved as too spicy & thick, it almost paste like a glue-stick on the plate which make me feel frustrated!sad fried potato chip with broccoli & baby-corn are good combination & just right portion to lady only;

~ friend like the baked potato on the steak-plate while the salad is fresh & just right to her stomach toosmile
chopstick steak is a little bit overdone assume it's medium-rarelol
~ thus the lamb is tender & taste too salty in small portion toosad
    chopstick lemon-tea with ice

sfsg in big glass without too much ice

    Supplementary Information:
~ when we finished the soup, the waitress tidy up the extra knife & fork without notice or facial expression during our conversation, then she pull equippment in a silly direction that almost push down our glass of water twice time~!!
    ~ during the 2 hour dinner, we found it's quite noisy & uncomfortable suppose it's bigger than the old-shop ;
~ service (both skill & manner) really need to be improved as a whole !!

    Recommended Dish(es):  lamb only

SHOCKINGLY BAD! Cries Jun 03, 2012
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
I walked in at about 1700 with the intention of trying some soups, foie gras, and risotto.....but turns out that one is restricted to the afternoon tea menu at that time of day. As it turns out, there was a Prawn & Asparagas Risotto (鮮蝦蘆筍意大利飯)...so i thought i'd give it try, better than nothing at least. Wrong! huffy I should have walked off then as it was just the start of the terrible experience:

Food: The risotto really does not justify its name, it really is just a pile of rice in sauce. There was no real attempt at making this the way that a real risotto should be made...nor was there any hint of parmesan or cracked pepper to make it look like effort had been put into its preparation. Seriously if you are reading this with the intention of trying an Olive's risotto, do yourself a favour and just stick to one of those instant microwaveable ones...i guarantee that this option will be infinitely more satisfying!

Service: Typical unfriendly, 黑面, amateur service without any personality. I was unfortunate enough to sit next to the waiter station and this is one seat i would advise to avoid at all costs even if it was the last in the house. The entire meal was accompanied by their childish carrying-on which included the 2 snotty waiters making personally snide remarks about various patrons sitting in the restaurant: A says to B - "嘩...睇下呢條油既髮型!".....B responds with a smug look on his face - "係喇...咩年代呀而家?"....A replies: "好老土呀!". Now im not sure whether they think others cannot hear them talk, or they are just stupid enough to think that just because they are not talking about me i would not mind! Either way i found this particularly disturbing and even if the meal was any good, this was enough to put me off. So the moral of the story to any potential patrons of Olives in Tsuen Wan is: be prepared to be mocked and ridiculed behind your back by the staff while you are eating!

Seating: Cramped and uncomfortable, dont expect any peace, quiet or privacy, its a terribly uncomfortable place to sit. Beware if you are claustraphobic!

    A Disappointing Dinner Cries Oct 01, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
1.Food - Bad steak and pizza (the menu recommend)
The steak is many and many "muscles" (ps. I ordered medium), it is hard to cut and eat!!
The pizza is too salty. Besides, even though the pizza is already cut, they all are combined(link up together), I need use the knife to cut them hardly.

    2.Drink & Appertizer- Okay
Juice is okay. and the "pate de foie gras" is good

    3. Environment
Not too clean, but can’t say dirty.
The 2-sit table is very small if for 2 persons. There is not space enough to put the dishes on the table. How come?! We have to eat quickly in order to let the waiter take the dishes to make more space.

4.Service - All waiter and waitress is good attitude, but some of them are liar and wear the fake smile mask.
3 days ago,I requested a corner area, but they did not do it, okay, it is fine for me. After I sat down, I saw the 4-sit table at the corner, I tried to ask them(2 waiters)“can I move to there?”, they said no since there is alreay reserved for 4 persons and can’t not separate(they are polite). However, 5 minutes later, 2 persons walked in (no booking) this restaurant, and then one waiter separated the table immidiately, from 1 table for four to 2 table for 2. It is really disappointing! Actually, there is total four waiters, may the two others is honest. i am not sure!!

Generally, if you go there, please don't order the bad steak and salt pizza!

Remarks, it is my first time to write article since i really feeal disappointed!

I just moved to HK and so far I've tried Oliva (terrible), The Spaghetti House (passable), Pasta de Waraku (not really Italian, but good) and Olive Cafe, which I liked the best.

My wife and I went here for dinner a few nights ago. We got: the cheapest bottle of red wine they had ($198, I think), the Caesar salad with smoked salmon, Chicken Masala, and "Create Your Favorite Pasta"-- I chose Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken, mushrooms and asparagus.

The wine was surprisingly good for the price-- I wish I could recall the name or even the varietal, but it was nice and full-bodied and tannin-y like I like it. 10/10 (given the price).

The bread that came free with the meal was alright. There was a white bread that was boring, but also a brown bread that had a really good flavor. 7/10.

The Caesar salad was great. Not too much sauce, a decent portion of salmon (and tasty too). The croutons and Parmesan were middling, but what can you say? Someone else's review mentioned that there was bacon on the Caesar salad, but we didn't get any bacon (thankfully-- who ever heard of bacon bits on a Caesar salad? Wouldn't put it past people in HK though.) 8/10

The Chicken Masala Linguine I didn't like, but then I hate Masala sauce, so that's about what you'd expect. My wife ordered it, and she didn't like it, but I'm not sure she knew exactly what Masala sauce was like. It tasted fine for what it was, I guess, but it's hard to tell. Somewhere between a 4/10 and a 7/10, I'm just unsure about this one.

The Fettuccine Alfredo was really good. I think it's one of the harder dishes to make, given that it usually just turns out bland and overly heavy. But they were judicious on the sauce, and the mushrooms and asparagus helped balance the flavor away from just cream, cream everywhere. I'm gonna go with 9/10.

All in all, a great dining experience. I hope that next time we go there, it will be just as good. On the pricey side for Tsuen Wan. Overall, I'd give it a 8/10.

Not worth for this price..... Cries Aug 28, 2011

    sad
See 92 good comments here, expect to be a good restaurant with this price.
Tried set dinner C and E, The steak is tatseless, we have to add salt. The lamb rib is ok.
The coffee is plain as well.....
Not very comfort place neither, facing 3 walls and I feel the movement of sofa when the guests seat behind me.
I enjoy Spaghetti House more than here, even Tai-Hing is better.
    One trial is enough.......

We came here after seeing the good reviews, but was disappointed.

Parma Ham Pizza -- When I think "pizza", I expect toppings on freshly baked pizza dough. I was not expecting what we got -- toppings on a crispy flour tortilla shell. The toppings were fresh and tasty enough, but the amount of cheese was pretty skimpy and definitely not enough of it to "stick" the toppings to the base so the toppings slid right off as soon as you took a bite. Overall, it was tasty enough, just not what I expected out of a "pizza".

Deluxe Burger -- The meat patty itself was definitely of the pre-packaged frozen kind and was very overcooked until it was extremely dry. In fact, we ended up asking for ketchup just to add some moisture and alleviate the dryness. The bun and condiments were fresh and excellent, but could not overcome the shortcomings of the meat patty...

Nachos -- Overpriced for what we got. About 12 chips with a little cheese melted on top. The salsa it was served with was the out-of-a-jar kind rather than freshly-made salsa. And enough salsa for only about 2 of the chips. We ate the rest of the chips with the ketchup... tongue

Maybe we ordered the wrong things. The table next to us ordered a tasty and juicy looking steak and a nice looking bowl of risotto. Perhaps we will try that if we ever go again...

It's our friends' birthday, he likes western crusine so we aim for DanRyan or Ruby Tuesday in the first place, but it's just de javu, so after some 'openricing' we came to this one tonight.

7 of us ordered 7 set dinner, we've had lamb, steak, chicken, ribs and foie gras + steak and risotto, I didn't take all pictures, but overall, it's better than what we expected and at some point better than lots of similar type restaurants indeed.

This is the first time to this cafe in Tsuen Wan, even though I have been living there for over 3 years. My friends came to visit me as there was no one at home at day, so we decided to try this out since my dad recommended this cafe to me. When we went inside, they put us in a table where it says 'Reserved', which made us thinking whether there is actually someone that is supposed to be sitting on the table or not..

We sat down and they gave us the lunch set menu. We ordered 3 lunch sets with an additional cost of $15, that includes either Garden Salad or Soup of the Day (Onion Soup), tea/coffee and dessert of the day (Ice-cream Puff). For main course, we had English Fish and Chips with Spaghetti, American Beef Burger with Potato Wedges and Salad, Ceasar Salad with Smoked Salmon. (The names of the main course is what it was written in the menu.)

When the onion soup arrived, it was very disappointing. My friends' bowl were too salty, but mine tastes really watery. So it kept us wondering whether it is from the same bowl or not shocked
    English Fish and 'Chips' =='
    English Fish and 'Chips' =='

The 'English Fish and Chips' came after 10min and surprisingly there are no chips!! We asked why there arent any, and we are told that the spaghetti had replaced the chips... == THEN PLEASE DO NOT PUT 'CHIPS' WITH THE FOOD NAME!! That is very misleading for the consumers. The fish was nicely deep-fried, not too oily, but we thought that they had put loads of salt in it.
    Beef Burger
    Beef Burger

The beef burger came next and it was really nice, despite that the burger had so much oil that it has seeped into the bottom of the bread and it makes the burger less appetising to eat. And the 'potato wedges' are not even close to its name.. they are just fries..... I really have nothing to say.... I just think that when putting the name for the food, they must be accurate, whether it is in English or Chinese.
    Ceasar Salad.. REALLY GOOD!!
    Ceasar Salad.. REALLY GOOD!!

I have to say that the salad is the best. Suitable amount of Ceasar dressing, reasonable amount of smoked salmon, mixed with dried bacon and croutons. We really enjoyed this salad.
    Ice-cream puff..
    Ice-cream puff..

The dessert is ice-cream puff.. We feel that it is very rushed and heartless. I feel that for Italian food one of the highlights is the dessert, as it is the 'closing ceremony' of the food. The plate has two puffs with chocolate sauce. It doesn't taste anything special.
    Tiramisu..差!!
    Tiramisu..差!!

    New York Cheesecake
    New York Cheesecake

Because we feel that we did not have enough, so we decided to order three more desserts: New York Cheesecake, Blueberry Cheesecake and Tiramisu. Tiramisu is really really bad, too much rum and there is so much coffee that when you try to spoon the mixture, the coffee just seeps into the cream and it makes the whole dessert look really disgusting. The cheesecakes though are really good, especially the blueberry cheesecake, but one of my friends feel that the cheesecake from Starbucks is way better than this one..

We had altogether 3 people having this lunch and we spent a total of $307.... to be honest, I would not go here again.... maybe just for afternoon tea

There was no set lunch. but you can add $8 for a soup and drink or $15 for a soup, drink and dessert to have a set.

We had one ceasar salad with smoked salmon $45 and one baked grouper with nuts (with spaghetti on the side) $60. Added $8 for the soup and drink.

The cream soup was served without bread. The waiter said there was only bread if adding $15. We thought that it was so mean. How much do a little piece of bread worth??

The main course is OK. the size quite good. the spagehetti has been stirred with butter and garlic. delicious.

The ceasar is ok. there was two large piece of salmon. but there was too much dressing.

    Coffee is so so.

We saw that the dessert is only a piece of roll cake. luckily, we didn't order that.

Overall, it is rather expensive for a set lunch in Tsuen Wan.

The food is still maintained in good quality.
But the waiter is not smart enough and service standard is really need to improve.

While we have enjoyed the apertizer and salad for over 10 minutes, the young waiter just come to collect the plates and refill the water (he always ask us to give the cup to him for refill water). And after 5 minutes more, an experienced waiter come and ask us the readindess to enjoy the main course....ha ha

One more, it is not recommended that extra upgrade the drink from normal coffee to special coffee...since it is nothing special.

    Extremely disappointed.  Jun 20, 2010
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
15 of us including me got there after 10 and we were told that the central air-conditioning is out after 10:00 (p.m.) and the restaurant is running its own air-conditioner after that time. The air-conditioning doesn't good enough to make people comfort even without anything to eat yet. We told this to the manager several times and hoping that the situation would not spoil our birthday party (we were celebrating 3 people's birthday in our group that night). Obviously, the situation was getting even worse after foods came - terrible hot! We tried to cold down ourselves a bit by order cold drinks and asked for glasses of ice for the drinks. Manager told us she would reflect the situation shocked but it seemed to me that it was just a model response to all patrons eating there having the same feeling with all of us.

I am now reluctantly to give 15 huffy to this restaurant! (P.S. Too hot to taste the foods!)

I went to have lunch in Olive Cafe with a friend on Monday. It was Day 7 of the menu, we picked the chef's recommendation which was the duck breast and a creamy tomato sauce crab meat & salmon pasta.

Smoked Duck Breast - portion was generous. It had 7-8 pieces of duck breast already sliced. It was a little overcooked but it still tasted excellent. You could get it with rice, pasta or fries and we had it with fries. The fries were a surprise because there were thick wedge fries & was very flavorful. The veggies was also quite good.

Creamy tomato sauce crab meat & salmon pasta - i didn't really taste the crab meat but overall this pasta was awesome. Pasta was al dente and the sauce was creamy but not too heavy.

Both dishes are highly recommended. Service was alright, I think they have some new staff so this waitress working there dropped a spoon on the table but it was just an honest mistake, she just needs more training.

I haven't been to Olive Cafe in over a year or possibly more. I'm not sure whether the owners changed hand but i noticed they've renovated the place. I love the decorations. The only flaw is probably the crowded seats. But it was a very nice lunch and food is the most important. It was nice & quiet so my friend and I were able to catch up.

Overall, i would say it's a gem in Tsuen Wan, and i would recommend it to everyone

seabass: two large pieces. but not quite fresh and tasty. much potato mash below. large portion.
    coffee

also had a white wine mussel with garlic spagehtti $88. there are quite many small mussels. the mussels is ok, if bigger and fatter is better. many garlic. the pasta is rather tender.

    add one tiramisu $22

overall, the size is large. the food is only so so. quite expensive in tsuen wan.

15% off if leave before 8.

    Let's Try Dinner Smile Oct 28, 2003

This is my favorate cafe in TW. Nice environment, nice waiter/wiatress, nice dinner. There are many many choices for dinner, starters, pasta, seafood, and steak. every dishes are having temptative outlook and nice taste. You can see how much effort the chef has spend on it. Salmon & Avocado Tartar, Seebass, house white wine and Tiramistu are my choice. Great! Try it out!
By the way, the dinner menu will be changed every few months.
