Chinese hot cross buns! Just OK 1 day ago
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Went past and saw these buns looking like Hot Cross Buns so got some to try.

Interestingly, it has a Chinese name called +bun because of the markings on top.

They also looked like a scone too.

    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    + bun:

Basically it was really similar to a scone and before it was baked it had egg yolk brushed on top.
The taste and texture was the same as a scone and very crumbly.

I found it too sweet and after eating half, I did not eat the rest.

I rarely dine in Mong Kok but stopped by because they sell Dim Sums and no one was there.

It is not a restaurant so you either buy takeaways or eat there at the bar table.

They sell the standard dim sums served at most restaurants.

    There are sauces and condiments.

One of the rice rolls I wanted to order was not available.

After asking the staff they said it was temporary unavailable and it was duck rice rolls.

At the front of their shop they had home-made fish shaomai too, the fish puree in the shaomai looked a bit grey, similar to daceballs.
I would have ordered the fish shaomai but I wasnt sure if there would be grounded bones in it.

It appears that they are a branch of May Wong's because the logo from the ordering form is the same.

    Prawn dumplings:

The prawn dumplings were ok, there was nothing overly exciting or bad about them.

The prawn meat inside was white and de-gutted with the usual taste of bamboo shoots.

Came on the right day but at the wrong time because quite a lot of the food was sold out.

It is located in the residential area of Quarry Bay between Quarry Bay MTR and Tai Koo MTR.

Locating this place was easy and I felt that it was easier walking from Tai Koo MTR than QB MTR because it is downhill and the station is not so irritating.

This joint sells Indonesian goods and foods and there is a table to dine there too.

It has been here for ages and LittleMeg and "sainamdaiocknam" has dined here before so I was expecting the food to be good here.

Originally I wanted the flavoured yellow ginger rice but it was sold out so I got the Indonesian assortment with rice.

    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Indonesian assortment with rice:

It was rice topped with beans, egg, peanuts, chicken, beef rendang and Chayote slices.
I liked the Chayote slices (Buddha's hand melon) because it was sweet and soft but not many people eat them in Hong Kong because they are used for soups and people find them tasteless.
The rest of the meat had strong coconut taste and the beef was slightly spicy but nice.

Mini chiffon series Just OK 1 day ago
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Saw the poster for these new Mini Chiffon series which looked cute.

There are three flavours: chocolate, pandan and vanilla seed.
The pandan and chocolate are not new except for the vanilla seed.

They had Jasmine flavoured floral pudding which reminded me of the pudding I had at The Dining Room.

    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Mini chocolate chiffon:

The chocolate chiffon just tasted like the usual soft chocolate cakes sold at Maxims, it was not great but tasted better than the Vanilla seed chiffon.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Mini vanilla seed chiffon:

The taste was disappointing, you could not taste any vanilla or any vanilla seeds in it at all.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Both these cakes were nicely presented but in terms of taste there was nothing special about it.

Not that I like this place but the association is limited to a budget of $4 for person.

They used to get egg tarts and butter cakes from this place but no one likes it.

So now they got the Swiss roll which can be sliced and shared.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Chocolate Swiss roll:

Thankfully the chocolate Swiss roll tasted normal, they also had the original one which was disgusting.
This chocolate roll is not nice but at least its not too sweet and the chocolate covers the nasty salty buttercream.
It did not end up going directly to the bin along with the egg tarts and butter cakes.
It is hilarious every month listening to the comments from the Westerners because the East cannot obviously meet the requirements of the West!

    Hilarious comments from Westerners:
    "It tastes like sock"
    "Is it edible?"
    "It's disgusting"

But with a budget of $4 per person and limited manpower there is not much you can ask for.

    Ramen Champion第七間店。
    主打北海道味噌湯底。
    辣味噌帶酸辣, 味噌味反而不突出。
    大量芽菜不錯, 其他配料只屬一般。
    麵條太硬需要改善否則可能步豆之詩後塵。

    Hard but not springy noodles;
    Mild miso taste largely overwhelmed by sour chili sauce ;
    Fat char Siu ;
    Normal nori and menma;
Pretty flavourable gyoza with fresh pork.

    Champion:

I've finally tried all Ramen Champion ramen shops (the shops which existed at the time of writing). This shop replaced the other miso based ramen "Eda no Uta". This time I ordered Spicy Miso Ramen with gyoza.

Broth: The broth was quite spicy even before I mixed the chili sauce in. The chili sauce was the type used for Chinese fried noodles which consisted of red chili, garlic and white vinegar. This overwhelmed the mild miso taste in the broth.
    辣味噌拉麵: 湯底帶酸辣, 辣醬是點蘿蔔糕的蒜茸辣椒醬(有醋味的),蓋過薄弱的黃味噌。味噌可重手點。

It was less salty than Sapporo but not as strong as Baikoken or Hakodate. Unfortunately, it's most similar to Sapporo No.1, which I found a bit watery. ( Sapporo No.1 used to be call Domon - and used to be pretty good . Now it's below average.)
    大量芽菜和荵舖面令湯底變得清新一點。筍不太爽口。粟米則很鮮甜。

Beans sprouts: The large amount of bean sprouts and chopped spring onions increased complexity of the broth somewhat.

The menma was nothing special. A bit limp. The sweet corns were good though.

    Noodles:
    北海道的粗麵條: 梅光軒的是含水量低的特式麵條。但這裡的是煮得不夠熟。硬但不彈牙。扣了很多分。

This was supposed to be Holkaido style noodle but was far too hard. Sapporo's nishiyama noodles were much better, Baikoken's noodles were firm and compact but that's because it's a special type of noodle. but This was not fully cooked (cf. springy ). Another 30-40 seconds should improve the noodles significantly.

I was quite unhappy about the noodles. sad

    Char Siu:

One large piece from the belly part. I had half and stopped because it's more than 75% fat! shocked Still better than Bario's char siu. But Tokyo Ninja's was even better still.

    叉燒勁火灼過有點香味算不錯。但偏肥, 幾乎七成肥膏!

    Egg:
    與Ramen Champion其他店質素相約不突出。附近Agura及品尚較好。

Fairly runny with a decent egg taste but nothing spectacular. In fact, the eggs at Ramen Champion weren't too memorable generally. If you're really into runny eggs, I suggest "Hinsho Yokohama Ramen" and "Agura", both are at Jordan.

    chopstick

    Gyoza:
    餃子: 內有豬肉和小量洋荵。雖然沒有什麼肉汁但豬肉感覺新鮮算不錯。

I initially wanted to order the mayonnaise prawn but I didn't see it on the menu in front of the cashier so I ordered gyoza instead.

The gyozas were OK. It didn't have a lot of juice inside but I can tell that the pork meat used was fresh. It had pork and a little bit of onions. Not bad. smile

    Conclusion:

This spicy miso ramen plus gyozas came down to HK$110 (HK$80+HK$30).

Pricey in view of the quality of the noodles. The broth wasn't as flavourful as I had hoped but was acceptable.

So, after trying all seven shops, I think I still prefer Bario and then followed by MUSO. But Tokyo Ninja seems to be constantly reinventing itself. So that's also worth paying attention to.

Who will be the next champion?

After trying these on my first visit, I was back for more.

They have two branches next to each other and I always go to this one.

I am slighty confused because some reviews say that it is minced prawn tofu puffs but the woman that sells it says that it is minced fish.

The exterior of this looks like smelly tofu with an interesting surface similar to loofah/bamboo pith.

This texture is created by slicing tofu puffs in half, turning it inside out, stuffing it with minced fish paste, sticking them on skewers and frying them.

The exterior is extremely crunchy, and the filling is slightly chewy with lovely fish taste.

It costs $10 per stick with table tissue wrapped around it which keeps my fingers lovely and clean.

On my previous visit to Cheung Chau I have always been captivated by this stall selling ice lollies but I never tried it because there were always people surrounding it.

I found the huge revolving metal barrel/drum interesting and the Chinese letters seem to say that they are made to order.

Anyway, I am not quite sure how they can freeze the ice lollies that quickly but all of the lollies are in a slim metal mould with a chopstick in the middle acting as a lolly stick!
They look similar to the British brand of WALL's mini milk ice lollies

I have not been to Thailand before so I do not know what Thai style ice lollies are meant to be.

These Thai style ice lollies only cost $8 and the size was not too big which was good.
It was perfect for people who were going to try snacks at every stall.
The ice lollies probably froze quicker at that sizel.

There were eight flavours: Watermelon, sesame, tea, coffee, coconut, mango, melon and taro.

I only considered the taro because the rest were standard Chinese flavours which I was not fond of.

After ordering, the guy rotates the drum/cylinder to get the required flavour.

He either lets you take it out of the mould or he takes it out for you.

    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Taro ice lolly:

The ice lolly was quite watery and icy, it was not milky but tasted of taro.
The sweetness was just right and the size was not too big which was good because it meant I could try other delicacies on the island.
Basically they tasted the same as WALL's mini milk ice lollies with taro flavour.

I never eat Chinese steamed buns because I don't like the fillings and it is frankly too sweet.

At this stall they had the usual boring lotus seed, red beans and custard, but then I saw two unusual flavours which were taro and pumpkin.

    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Steamed bun with pumpkin filling:

There was not much filling inside which was good and the size was smaller than the buns sold at the stalls nearby.
The pumpkin filling was natural pumpkin meat which was not too sweet.
Although these flavours are unusual for Festive buns, you can get these flavours easily at bun specialists such as Tong Kee and Mr Bao Dim.

Thanks to Secret Ingredient for letting me try their delicious meals.

Now with Secret Ingredient everyone can be a master chef if they keep their secret while Secret Ingredient does the hard work and thinking!

Basically at Secret Ingredient they offer so many delicious and healthy dishes that are made simple for you to cook.
All the ingredients are marinated, washed, cut for your convenience.

Each ingredient is labelled with an alphabet and the recipe is as simple as ABC, you just look for the required letters and put those ingredients in.
The instruction sheet is crystal clear and tells you what cooking utensils are needed.

After browsing their website, I was really impressed because the dishes they offered were dishes that you would expect to order in restaurants, but now they can be easily cooked in everyone's homes and you can pretend to be master chef without anyone knowing the secret behind.

I loved the Western dishes they offered.

Examples of the dishes they offer:
-Crunchy Tilapia with Fennel Tzatsiki and Mediterranean Couscous
-SI’s Tuna Tacos with Fresh Guacamole and Signature Chilli-Parm Corn

The orders are ready on the same day if you order before 5pm and can be delivered to your home or office.

I was amazed by their hospitality because I really wanted to try the salad, desserts, soup, and vanilla soda too and they were able to accommode that.

After I made the order, their menu was changed the next day and they informed me that I could take a look at the new menu too and change my order if I found something else even better.

Anyway, I was such a greedy pig and tried:
    Greek Salad
    Pumpkin Pie
    Pecan Pie
    Celeriac Soup
    Vanilla Dry Soda
    Veggie Thai Curry

I was really looking forward to cooking again because the environment and climate in Hong Kong is too hot and the accommodation here is so cramped compared to the "normal conditions" in the UK which I took for granted.
Luckily it was not that hot the day I cooked and just as I thought everything was going according as planned I was furious to find out that the cooker was out of gas.

In the end I resorted to using a rice cooker to cook and surprisingly it turned out fine.

My food was delivered in a lovely brown paper bag.

The items were packed in perfect equilibrium with the sauces at the bottom giving the bag a sturdy base and platform for the other ingredients on top.
Some of the vegetables were vacuum packed which kept the vegetables fresh and other ingredients were packed neatly in clear tubs and lettered.

I am sure it was just as fun for them packing my order as it as for me unpacking it!
All the packaging they use is environmentally friendly, corn based and not plastic.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Greek Salad:
The greek salad was an easy starter, it was just finding the required letters and mixing them together.

There were delicious yellow peppers, feta cheese, olives, cucumber, parsley and purple onions and dressing.
The salad was colourful and sweetly delicious because of the yellow peppers and the feta and olives paired perfectly with the onions giving a crunchy Greek salad medley.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Veggie Thai Curry:
Unfortunately, I had to use a rice cooker for this because I ran out of gas, but it still worked.

I only failed with the noodles because I left them for too long so they were a bit soft, but cooking the Thai curry sauce was easy as 1-2-3 and the curry pastes and ingredients supplied smelt so gorgeous with plenty of lemongrass leaves which is an essential for Thai green curry.

The vegetables tasted amazing because the curry sauce that was developed by them was delicious and when the noodles were mixed in, it absorbed that delicious curry sauce.
It was slightly spicy with a delicious creamy coconut taste.

It was truly a hearty vegetarian meal with broccoli, baby sweetcorn, aubergines, potatoes and fresh peas.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Celeriac Soup:
The soup was in a vacuum sealed bag so all you had to do was boil it in water and pour the contents in a bowl.

The apple was the only ingredient I had to cut because it oxidises easily.

The taste of the soup was also amazing, it was creamy and full of celery flavour, the pieces of apple and the celery soup were delicious together and the pairing of celery and apple always works.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Pumpkin Pie:

I have been craving for this ever since Thanksgiving because Pumpkin pie is gorgeous, it tastes different from normal pumpkin because the pie version is mixed with cinnamon and other spices and the texture of the pumpkin pie filling was thick and creamy.
The sweetness was just right and the crust thin and crispy.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Pecan Pie:

The pecan pie was also delicious and I am sure anyone would like it, the sweetness was just right with lovely pecan nuts.
Both pies were delicious and I was so lucky that Secret Ingredient partnered with Tai Tai Pie Pie to launch their first dessert collection, otherwise I would not known about their delicious pie collection.
    ★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
    Vanilla Dry Soda:
This is the BEST soda I have tried in my life. If you know me, I rarely drink sodas because they taste artificial and I find them syrupy, but this bottle of dry soda was PURE soda.
What I mean by that is the taste was NATRUAL and it tastes like fizzy water with a hint of vanilla and no other artificial tastes.

I'm always down to try new sushi spots! So this time I picked sushi mori and made a reservation for lunch. They only had two time slots; 12:00-1:00 or 1:00-2:00. We got there a little late but still manage to finish on time before one. The service and the food is quick, so great lunch spot for people in a rush. The lunch menu includes a soup and a salad, then a mochi as dessert. The set ranges from $88-$160 depending on what you order. I ordered the salmon, scallop, salmon roe, sea urchin with sushi rice. I was happy with this combination since it basically had all the sashimi I want to eat. The presentation comes out to be very appetizing. The salmon was cut into thick pieces so you actually get a lot. The fish wasn't the fattiest parts, but it was fresh enough where I wouldn't complain. The sea urchin was also mediocre, not the best ive had, but good enough quality to get by. All the sashimi seems to be fresh but it definitely wasn't something I couldn't get anywhere else. The sushi rice was flavored so it was good with sashimi but again just typical sushi rice that I can get somewhere else.

In conclusion, I don't think it's a bad deal for the food you get with the price for central area. I would consider coming back if I want a quick lunch.

After watching a film at the PP cinema over lunchtime, headed off to find tea.

I'd eaten their excellent cakes many times in the office tongue, so wondered if this would be up to the same level.

Unfortunately all the tables to the side of the dining area were already taken so unashamedly sat in the middle watching everybody go buy and they could see what we were eating.

The first tier - nice appetizers:
ham & gruyere + egg & tomato rolls
smoked salmon, cucumber & cream cheese sandwiches
    pan fried jiaozi

The second tier - too sweet for me:
    panna cotta toffee rush
    caramel toffee choc chip
    berry delight
    smarties

The top tier - ok, balances out tier 2
    sunshine lemon curd
    vanilla cheese cake
    carrot cake

Overall, it was so so. Definitely had much higher expectations, and even at 380HKD for 2 people, it's pretty overvalued in my book. I'd rather have one of their cakes instead of this.

Took my fellow foodies here because the branch at Hang Hau was quite nice.

I recommended this place because you can choose the level of spicyness for the Tom Yum Kung soup base .

Vermicelli in tom yum kung broth:

The tom yum kung broth was much spicier and stronger than the version I had at Hang Hau, and to be fair I chose the same spicyness level to compare the two restaurants.
This restaurant was a tad spicier than the Hang Hau branch and there was less tomato in the taste.
The vermicelli disappointed me because they were thicker than the ones I had at Hang Hau and I thought the vermicelli used in all the branches would be the same.

Having just returned from a 12hr flight, got home peckish and ventured out to try a local spot for a late night snack.

Clean, relatively empty and an hour before closing, checked the menu and it didn't seem very authentic Fukuoka. More typical generic Japanese ramen.... And then there's the tomato soup udon! There's a handful of Japanese ramen places in Tokyo that I recall having a tomato soup base, so wanted to compare against those. Then again this is udon too, so really not very Japanese in my book.

Still being adventurous chose some grilled chicken for the protein, and the tomato soup udon...

Arrived pretty promptly, and didn't look all that appetising. But after tucking in, it tastes quite ok. Chicken was very standard, the tomato soup not bad, but not good. For 50 HKD, can't complain too much.

I'll be back to try the other more standard ramen dishes...

Old school friend recommended the place to me.
It is a white wooden cafe with books, pots of plants and picture frames.
You can find sofa-like seats with cushions lol
See if you are lucky enough to grab special seating areas! We waited for 15 minutes at 12:30pm on a Sunday.

I love the glass roof so much. Lighting is so natural.
You will occasionally saw brides passing through, or even taking pictures on the bench outside the front door of this cafe. Well-designed madmad

Waiters served us two 常餐 ($46)

    叉燒湯意粉 BBQ meat with spaghetti
Love the BBQ meat so much. Not very fatty! Spaghetti is a bit salty, ordinary enough.

Toast with butter spread, fried egg and two thin pieces of ham
Honestly they taste like the breakfast in any fastfood chain stores. But the relaxing dining atmosphere adds marks.

I spent 2-3 hours in the corner, finding the environment is really comfortable and suitable for chatting.
Many thanks to my friend who listened to my mumbling during my trough of my life.
If you wanna sit as long as possible, you are advised to keep more food unfinished on the table.
The waiters there will not ask you if you needed the food at all until late tongue

    Will definitely visit again!
