I have actually visited Chung Kee twice, first time was in 2013 and this is the more recent visit. It is very unfortunate that despite how busy this location is, that the quality can be inconsistent depending on your luck, despite how busy it can be with the younger crowd. For this 2014 visit, the mango pomelo sago dessert was extremely lackluster. The mango fruit looked a tad old and overly refrigerated, and doesn't have that vibrant bright luster that mangos normally do. OK yes, mangos are not

OK yes, mangos are not quite in season during the winter maybe, but now Hong Kong gets them year round from the Philippines....and I wonder how come my visit in 2013, the same mango dessert tasted infinitely better? Pretty obvious there is a quality control issue here.

Perhaps Chung Kee is not a good place to try durian pancake. This was my first time having this ever in Hong Kong and I must say it scarred me for life. I was rather disappointed to see a pre packaged container, straight out of the refrigerator. Durian desserts are supposed to be done at a very high level in Hong Kong, but with Chung Kee, I guess the correct assumption should be "depends on where you get it". There was no care or thought whatsoever put into this preparation, and perhaps this was outsourced to some other vendor. Utterly disgusting, foul, and putrid. Or perhaps, I definitely am not a durian person.

I did not finish the durian pancake, and rotated back to the mango pomelo sago. Definitely was not impressed this 2nd time round. A huge disappointment, considering that the coffee sawdust pudding that I had last year was splendid, as was their mango pomelo sago and grapefruit variant.

Surely an unlucky occurence or a mediocre review will not put any dent on their business, but always interesting to provide additional datapoints. With chain shops, even if small/local, there are bound to be consistency and quality issues. And thankfully there is a lot of competition.
