Noodle taste like egg noodle. Broths not exceptional. Pricey. Interesting decor.

I'm a bit of a prude when it comes to food. MIST is a bit advanced for my taste. Before I decided to go to MIST, I had always been in two minds on whether to try it out or not. One day, when I finally mustered enough courage to try MIST, it folded.
Ra-super-men is apparently a reincarnation of MIST. I'm not too interested in their other creative tries but the photo of the Spicy Miso Ramen looked very nice! So I went with my wife as she is more appreciative of fusion stuff in general.
The shop was located inside the new shopping mall, Hysan place. It was extremely crowded so it wasn't easy to get to the 12th floor. The exterior of the shop very interesting.
裝修有特色。很似戲院內的小食亭。服務員很有禮貌,亦有效率。
It's designed like a cinema. With "ticket booths" outside the shop. Those ticket booths were electronic games and photograph machines. Great crowd-drawers.
On the left side of those booths was the entrance to the ramen shop, "protected" by the RaSupermen curtains.
The view outside was very interesting. Fairly unique in Causeway Bay.
Interesting view of SOGO:
Movie-goers:
The shop was already full at 12:30p.m.. Fortunately, there wasn't a very long queue. We only had to wait for 5 minutes before we got our table.
The interior was very interesting. Again, the design was based on a cinema. Imagine a kiosk that sells popcorn in a cinema, then further imagine a long zigzag metallic table with about 20 stools placed next to it. That's the middle part of the restaurant. There were also 3-4 box seats for 4 person and about 10 more seats near the wall. It's very crowded. Fortunately, like a cinema, much of the material seemed to be sound proof, so the noise level was low.
During our wait, we saw a colleague of mine, who just finished her ramen. She is a ramen and coffee connoisseur. But like most gourmets in Hong Kong, she didn't write reviews (unlike yours truly, an attention seeking pseudo-gourmet. ) I asked her what she thought of the ramen.
She hesitated (we were still inside the shop) and said, slowly, "It's O...K..."
Got it...
We had a look at the menu while waiting for the table. They had about 4-5 different types of ramen. (A few types of miso ramen and shio ramen, if I recall properly.) I didn't pay too much attention at the time as I was only interested in the Karamiso ramen. They also had an interesting salad with Beef consommé and some sort of ramen sushi. There is a small drink list behind the one page menu which included cocktails and a few beers.
We were allocated a box seat right next to a couple. The table was large enough (about 1.5 meters) so there was still reasonable distance between all of us. The cutleries were placed inside a secret drawer at the table.
Super Ramens:
We ordered a Kara Miso Ramen (Spicy Miso Ramen - $98) and a Ume, Shio Ramen (Plum and Salt Ramen - $98).
True to the way of how a cinema operates, there is a huge profit margin on food and drinks.
The already high price did not include egg or seaweed. Each bowl of ramen only came with three pieces of char siu.
Egg and Seaweed will cost you an extra $15 and $10 respectively.
I added an egg.
The ramen came after a 5-8 minutes wait. Those came at the same time:
Kara Miso:
辣味噌完全不辣。與普通的赤味噌湯味道一樣。很一般。荵亦不夠鮮。叉燒有點肉味但很薄,一夾即散。
Broth:
I was immediately disappointed when I had a sip of the broth. It was not spicy at all.
It tasted just like a normal bowl of Aka Miso soup. It've very bland and had no complexity to it. Just like a normal bowl of Aka Miso soup served after you had sushi (like I had at "Sushi toku").
Red miso is fermented longer and more dry than yellow miso. The taste is saltier than normal miso. It's also more grainy and musky. The taste itself was fine but that is not kara miso.
I mixed the spring onions into the broth in the hope of enhancing the taste. However, these spring onions weren't too fresh and didn't add much to it other than a lackluster spring onion taste.
Char Siu:
Thin, fatty and all broke into shreds on contact.
The taste was fine, however. A bit better than Ramen Kureha.
Honestly, both my wife and I thought the Char Siu at Ajisen is better than those two shops.
Noodles:
差: 麵質像極有點烚過了頭的全蛋麵。有點麥味令麵條味道有點怪。
It's not Kyushu ramen or any type of readily identifiable noodles as far as I know. I know MIST had their own noodle machine so perhaps it's the same here.
It just tasted like slightly overcooked, soggy egg noodles, perhaps with a hint of durum wheat taste in it. I find it quite strange.
I suppose some may like it ?! Anyway, not me.
Egg:
差: $15元 買一隻幾乎全熟的烚蛋。蛋白亦不入味。
Need I say more? HK$15 for a hard boiled egg?
Luckily, after I broke into the centre, there was still a little bit of runny egg yolk. There wasn't much shoyu taste outside the egg.
Very pricey. If you like soft-centered eggs, I suggest Marutama.
Kara Miso ~ Not recommended.
Ume, Shio:
Is it just me and my stereotyped view of what a ramen should taste like ? Or what?
So the verdict of this shop lies in my wife's bowl of ramen:
梅子鹽味: 雞湯為主。像盒裝雞湯味。梅及青澡都不夠鮮。麵更淋及有很重鹼水味。
Broth:
The broth is chicken based. There was chicken taste but it's not a refreshing type of chicken taste. It taste very much like packaged chicken soup, i.e. a bit musky with a stale aftertaste. It's not warm enough.
It's very oily too, as you could see from the photograph. Marutama does much better chicken soup than here. Ryotei and Tori Hana are also miles ahead.
The broth improved a little bit after the plum was crushed and mixed into the broth. However, the plum wasn't the best we've tried. It had a rather artificial taste - neither sweet nor sour. A very amorphous taste which was not appetizing. Those you could get at any Japanese supermarket, e.g. in SOGO, might taste better.
There was some "Aosa" splatted on the bowl of ramen. It barely had any seaweed taste. Those at Maru Tama was much much fresher.
Char Siu:
The char siu was similar to mine.
Noodle:
My wife was very unhappy about the noodle. The noodles were slightly thinner than mine and a little bit soggier. Worse of all, it had the dreaded "soap" taste. I tried it and felt the same. She couldn't finish her noodle. She also thought those at Ajisen was better.
Ume, Shio Ramen ~ Not recommended.
Every city needs a super hero:
The good thing about this trip was our visit to this mall.
If you decide to go there, there is a podium at I think at the 9/F floor:
You could look outside and look at the very interesting rooftop of post-war buildings.
Conclusion:
- Very friendly and efficient service.
- Interesting decor.
- The quality of the egg noodles appears to fluctuate heavily.
- Kara Miso ramen is not karai for me at all.
- Ume, Shio Ramen is chicken based. Not exceptional.
- Pricey.
It's very new so maybe the quality is still very unstable. I'll definitely give this to them.
可能試業中未穩定。Going up or going down?
Will rasupermen go super up or go super down? We'll see how ra-super-men improve in the near future, abso-flipping-lutely.
although the egg tasting noodles have deterred me from going, the rest of the review was really good to read.
Da pictures are really good too as I have never seen the surrounding area from that perspective and I never expected it would be like a cinema inside.
From one of ur pics I could imagine being in da daily planet building from the film. As one of the buildings looks like the empire state building squashed with the spike chopped off!
麵質似全蛋麵。
價錢貴。
可能新開張未穩定。
Noodle taste like egg noodle.
Broths not exceptional.
Pricey.
Interesting decor.
