This "Mama" ain't my mama. An old friend's mom used to make him crepes every weekend. When she visited every summer, we would have the wonderful treat of crepes -- all sorts from plain to buckwheat crepes; with apples or icecream. The thin pancake isn't so hard to make to begin with, but to make it well it certain requires some skills (just for flipping in requires some practice). I had the luck to flip a few crepes in those days. Now, I'm just as lucky as anyone here who will have the opportunity to consume them.

Here at Mazazu Crepes, another Japanese Import. Literally meaning "mother" in Japanese, MAZAZU CREPES should be in competition but no comparison with its crepe rivals. It offers savoury and sweet choices of crepes. But what's more tempting is authentic creamy soft-serve icecreams -- you can choose either a seasonal flavour or plain "crema". The current seasonal flavour is green tea. Pictured here, the green tea soft serve is a bright olive green, with a whiff of fresh tea fragrance bearing much resemblance to a real cup of matcha placed close to the nose. Swirling around and topping a wafer cone, the icecream is appropriately sweet -- with the essential bitterness from the tea itself, while the crispy wafer cone is satisfactory.

For crepes we ordered one bananas with 'plain ice cream" in it. The dessert was quickly made to order. First a pre-made crepe was laid on a cold platform, followed by fanned out sliced bananas, a pile of plain icecream, then quickly folded and rolled up into a vertical conical shape to be held and consumed from the wide lips downwards. The top was drizzled with chocolate syrup. Personally if I would've known of the chocolate syrup I would ask to omit it, since it took away the pure richness of the icecream, but the creamy texture still stood out and accompanied the ripe bananas and the eggy crepes ever so feathery soft. The crepes with bananas were exactly the way I had it before.

Other selections on the crepes feature most familiar ingredients like custard, strawberries, whipped cream (on sweet crepes); tuna and mayo, cheese (on savoury crepes).

MAZAZU Crepes may get hectic on evenings and weekends, but don't you fret for a moment, the staff is knowledgable and friendly and will wait until they take your order, and special requests too...The real mamas of the world may not approve of such indulgence with chocolate, fruit, icecream and pancakes all in one, maybe it's about time to buy one for the mamas, and spread the joy of the Japanese crepe celebration that's about to hit it big again.
