We had a lovely day at the beach and were starving by dinner time. Lower Cheung Sha Wan had limited choices for dining and we opted for The Stoep.

Our order:
chopstick 1/2 order of farm bread
chopstick 1/2 order of mixed seeds bread
chopstick Tzatziki sauce
chopstick a large Greek salad
chopstick Mixed Braai (with a side salad and Braai potato salad)

The bread arrived first and it smelled as it has just been taken out of the oven. Also both the farm and mixed seeds bread were both warm, which was a nice surprise. We preferred the mixed seeds more as it has more bite to it, the farm bread just tasted as any other fluffy bread you can get at Chinese bakeries.
The mixed Braai was bit disappointing. Typically Braai at most African restaurants we tried, they will provide you a large plate of mixed BBQ meat, including Boerewors, Kebabs, Chicken, Pork, Lamb chops, Steak, different Sausages, and Spare-ribs... The Stoep was being very conservative on their Braai. The plate contained: 1 tiny sausage, 1 overcooked lamb chop, 1 piece of steak and 1 piece of chicken. The best meat was the chicken, it had a good BBQ flavour to it and it was quite juicy. Apart from that the Braai Potato salad was second best, but I think they used a bit too much Mayonnaise which made the potato salad too greasy.

Salads most of the time can't go wrong. The Greek salad was quite large and contained: lettuce, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, sliced onions, a couple of Kalamata Olives and crumbled low fat Feta on top. Nothing special, a hand picked salad at Great (Pacific Place) would have even contained more ingredients and tasted better.
Though I have to admit the atmosphere is nice, especially if you manage to have dinner there around sunset the view will be stunning. Just do not forget to bring mosquito repellent!

So there, this review is long overdue. But we had a lovely visit at Lantau's 'The Stoep.' The food was quite good and a beach-front setting is an experience in itself. We first came on a weekday, so then, the place is not as packed as the weekends.

We had the freshly baked bread-Seedloaf which was excellent with the Hummus and Tomato & Nut Dip.

We also got the Garlic Prawn, the Whole Spring Chicken, Chips, Scallop Potato (Very Creamy-Yum Yum), Mixed BBQ (With Sirloin Steak, Lamb Chops, Chicken and Boerewors-South African Sausage) and Greek Salad!
The location is tops, there's a Water Sports Company right beside it. The dessert, oh, the dessert is absolutely yummy! Malva Pudding served with Vanilla Ice Cream!!!
All in all, we enjoyed every single time we spent here. Lovely Beach! Good Food! Nice People!

Imagine yourself on a beach at a tropical location. Imagine you are hungry. Imagine sitting down at a beach restaurant in your beach gear, ordering a glass of rose while watching the melee of a beach full of merry-making revellers.

Welcome to The Stoep on Lower Cheung Sha Beach, Lantau Island, Hong Kong. Yes thats right. You do not have to scoot to Bali or Phuket - its right here on your doorstep. And that's was The Stoep means. A step, a veranda, a place in front of the house to watch life pass by on a sunny day.

We had the country bread with Tsatsiki (great), Greek salad for starters (good), Grilled sausage with cream potatoes (great), and grilled lamb chops (good)

While the orginal South African elements are no longer much in evidence the BBQ, the homemade bread (don't forget to bring home a loaf) and the sheer thrill of eating with sand carressing your feet makes it all the troubles worth to make the treck. Go there and experience a real day off in Hong Kong. PS cash only!

Food: selection was ok. they all arrived pretty quickly. the beef (though ordered as medium rare) was way overcooked that we thought we were chewing some rubber meat.
you can't go wrong with salad. dessert was interesting but nothing special.
Service: bad. you waved at them and they pretended that they didn't see you. they either went back to the kitchen or turned their heads away. we had to shout a few times to catch their attention.
also we had to asked different staff quite a few times to order our drinks
Luckily the view was great- it was a quiet evening with no rain and not humid at all. saw lots of cows resting on the beach as well!
in summary, there is nothing special about this place, food was ok, service was non existent. not worth going there all the way

NB: as the ladies was occupied i had to use the gents, which was tiny AND dirty. i am quite small (female, UK size 6 FYI) and still found it hard to turn. i don't know how any average sized gents can squeeze betwen that tiny space between the door and the urinal!

Maybe it's the sullen staff. Maybe it's the flies that scurry across the table at every moment. Maybe it's because the first time I came here, I noticed effluent spilling out of a drainage pipe on the beach. But for whatever reason it is, I can't bring myself to like the Stoep. Many have raved about it, and perhaps it was good at one point a long time ago, but with an uninspired menu and an inconvenient location, there's not much to love. (Perhaps it's because people hike over Sunset Peak, get sunstroke and then stagger all the way down the hill to the Stoep, and are still groggy/befuddled enough to think they're enjoying themselves.) Plus it rains whenever I go there.

Positives are meant to include the bread. Well, whoop-de-doo. Yes, it's fresh bread, but saying a restaurant has good fresh bread is about as enticing as saying they supply cutlery with your meal. (And let's face it, compared to the bread at a proper restaurant like Joel Robuchon, this isn't good or particularly fresh)

Being vegetarian clearly makes me a little bitter - maybe I should have had the quiche without complaint and enjoyed being in the 1970s. Mm, what's that you say? They serve garlic bread too? Innovative!

Grilled vegetables are ... ok, forgetful staff don't seem worth leaving a tip for, tables and chairs are not at all comfortable. Mind you, if a rain-lashed, windswept patio is your thing, this will seem like paradise.
