GwailoGuru says:Great Shanghainese Food in CentralSmile

lolGwailoguru Rating: 7/10 (Shanghainese)lol

*In One Simple Sentence:*
Private Restaurant Club with great greasy food and a reasonable price tag

*Insider Tip:*
A membership is 4000HK$ at the moment (2012), try to borrow one of your friends, you can use it to dine in without problems (no verification etc)

Visiting Details:
Food rating: 7/10
Service: 6/10
Ambiance: 6/10
Price: HK$200 pax
Serving Tab Water/Tea: Yes-Yes
English Menu: No (!)

What we really liked:
The fantastic marinated eggs and the egg prawns

And what not:
It's a private "Dining Club" means only with a expensive membership you are usually allowed in

Summary:
Service
Service was good, very efficient in replacing empty tea and water pots, dishes were served in a timely manner and the general attitude of the service personnel was nice and friendly.

The Place
Located directly at the entrance of LKF, left side, on the 7th floor of a normal residential building. This also explains the "private club" character as there is no official restaurant license given out in residential buildings.
This also means the whole place is more cozy, smaller and better in service than the usual huge and loud Dim Sum Places elsewhere.

The Food
Fantastic, the portions are big and the flavour and texture of the Shanghainese styled food is great. Shanghainese naturally is pretty greasy, and that's what you get here as well. Especially dishes such as the "Pork Knuckle" or the "Shrimp in Egg paste" are high on cholesterol and calories, but fantastic in taste.

Our must tries are the marinated eggs with perfect egg yolg texture, the pork knuckle and the sweet rice desert.
We didnt like the Xiao Long bao though, as the soup inside wasn't hot enough and the skin was too thick.

I also have to add that everything here is very reasonable priced, means we shared well over 10 dishes and walked out with a per head spending of approx 200HK$.

三五知己中環飯局, 既有特色, 價錢合理, 寧波同鄉會! 記得帶Red wine, corkage fee $30 only! The overall environment is nice and clean, yet a bit noisy. Not an ideal place for dating couples and business dinner.

In addition, you can apply the membership at the reception. The annual membership fee for dinning is $100- The portion of every dish is enough for 3 to 4 person, a good place for family & friend's reunion.

We had ordered 2 cold dishes, 3 main course and 3 dessert + 2 bottles of beer, total: $900 for 6 person - good deal on Friday night at LKF

主菜

紅燒元蹄
蔥油家常餅
雞火干絲湯

Dessert - so so, can try! 棗泥餅, 酒釀丸子, 寧波湯圓
Cold dish - 醉雞 (一般) & 素鵝

Member only, reservation is required. You can enroll the membership at the reception. The annual dinning fee is $100- I will come back with my family to try other dishes on the menu, such as
鳳尾魚, 生煎飽 & 糖醋魚

Recommended Dish(es): 紅燒元蹄

MSG ladenJust OK

My girl friend and I took 3 westerner friends here for a meal that wasn't LKF-ised. One was allergic to seafood and couldn't try the 海蜇 which was a shame, we should have been more accomodating.

The appetiser combo of 3 was 海蜇, 醉雞 and 馬蘭頭. Alas you can't order 海蜇頭 because it was out of the price range. Our guests thought the chicken was OK, but I guess they didn't realise the sauce came separate, which I generously poured over my chicken, and in fact the 馬蘭頭 as well because it was bland and dry. The 海蜇 was so so, I guess the 海蜇頭 might have been better.

The mains were better. The 糖醋排骨 was not spare ribs but 豬排, which suited our guests well (someone had earlier commented that unless you were coming with westerners, don't bother. I agree). They were also impressed with the 樟茶鴨, which they asked for extra hoisin sauce to go with it. I personally thought it was a bit dry and salty. They loved the "chinese pizza" 家常餅 and dabbled it in all sorts of sauces. 炒年糕 came in big slices and was chewy, but again the sauce was a bit on the heavy side. 小籠包 had some juice inside, but not as much as to make one go "ooohh, that's so good!". 干扁四季豆 - big portion, beans were a little too soft, but otherwise tasted good.

高力香蕉豆沙 and 酒釀雙圓 but it seemed the guys were stuffed by then and only managed a few bites of fluffy eggwhite and drank the soup from the 湯圓, which had a funny "off" sort of sourness to it, rather than the wine flavour I had expected.

When we went home, we all felt very thirsty, and a couple of us just felt jittery and couldn't fall asleep that night. Must have been very generous with the MSG. Service was so so, nothing to extol about. I guess there are some special dishes here that we haven't tried, and I would have loved to order the smelly tofu or eel, but maybe my fellow companions wouldn't have appreciated it too much.

The food is great everytime when we visit there. The egg-yolk shrimp and the stewed knuckle are always memorable. It taste really really good. I brought everyone there and they all like the food so much.
But they have to renovate the place a bit. It smell no good sometimes coz of the old decor.

Expensive and dishonestCries

I ate with my girlfriend at this place tonight and it was most disappointing. The last time I went there was some time in 2005 where the food was tasty and it was great value but boy haven't things changed since then.

Two bowls of rice, one pang-pang chicken (spicy shredded chicken), dou-miao with shredded conpoy and spare ribs in plum sauce came to a total of 374HKD. The dou-miao was 120 in the menu but 150 on the tab. Upon querying the discrepancy I was told seafood prices had gone up recently therefore prices had to be lifted too. What a crock of shit. He relented with apologies in the end but this kind of dishonesty is just unacceptable and absolutely disgraceful.

You won't find me there the next time but if you do decide to take the plunge - CHECK YOUR BILL.
