Waited 20 minutes for take-out (1 congee)Cries

With about 40 minutes for lunch and such cold weather today, I decided to come here to order a Pork Ball Congee take-out. Little did I know, they save all take-out orders for last. The few of us there waited 20 minutes. The service was bad, they didn't care that we had to wait.

On the congee itself, it's $35 bucks for the pork ball congee. The taste is alright, but very watery. No drinks included, the portion was small. I can have that in the famous congee shops for the same price, bigger portion, cleaner environment, faster and more polite service.

I would not come here anymore and I would not recommend to anyone. Even w/out the waiting, the price is too high for this quality and environment.

I tired walk-in before and got turned away by them twice already... because they are always full!! My wish of trying their congee hotpot is finally granted in 2011 lol

The place is tiny and packed with people. They led us to a table which can literally fit 2 people and a hotpot. There is no room behind us as it's the main walkway for everyone. There is no room next to us either as there is a VIP "room" that can accomodate a round table.

Interesting...

There isn't much choice for hotpot ingredient, but I believe they are all signature items.

We ordered beef, 魚咀, 豬潤 and choi sum.

魚咀 is a must try item - it's fresh and sweet without the fishy smell, each order comes w/ six "fish head" chopstick

beef and 豬潤 are also very good - but since there were 2 of us, we could barely finish 1 dish. Next time I would go for 雙拼 (although they charge you extra for 雙拼, it's better than wasting half of the dish mad )

We walked aways belly full, smiling big and feeling very warm!

lol

Recommended Dish(es): 魚咀

A simple quick meal can sometimes be equally satisfying as a 3 courses meal at a Michelin 2-star restaurant. One of such options which I love is to have good congee and wanton at a local, homely and down-to-earth establishment. After a short chat with a friend in the Wan Chai area, we were both very hungry but wanted to try something fast but yummy of course! I am not so familiar with this area so my friend led the way. My friend visited this place once before and enjoyed the congee very much. I would not comment much about the decor, comfortableness or even atmosphere of this place because there wasn't much. It was fairly clean and that was all I cared at that moment.

The very first thing I noticed was the many POTs of congee on top of electric stoves on many tables, together with some raw ingredients on the side. Apparently this place is famous for its Congee Hot Pot / Fondue! Too bad we were in a hurry, otherwise I would insist on trying for sure!

(1) Pork Liver + Beef Congee
The pork liver was wonderful! Firm but slightly "crisp" / bouncy against the teeth. Rich in flavor as well. The sliced beef was alright, not surprises compared with the wonderful pork liver. Congee wise, it was not as creamy or as thick as I expected (and of which I love!) but it was definitely good above average!

(2) Wanton
I was still very hungry after the congee so I ordered a bowl of wanton! (and so did my friend) It was wonderful! It was not the BIG and STUFFED type, it was the typical size one with chopped shrimps and pork mixtures (plus traces of shrimp roe?). The dough layer / skin was very thin and the wrapping skills resulted with a little "tail" sticking to the wanton. (I think a typical or traditional Wanton have a certain guideline as to the proportion of the dough / skin and it should have a fairly long "tail" to it)

Likes:

* Pork Liver - Fresh good quality pork liver!
* Wanton - nicely prepared / wrapped

Dislikes:

* Really packed ! I had to sit with both legs squeeze tightly together!
* Congee not as creamy and thick to my liking.
* MSGGGGGGG ...

Avg Spending: Around HKD 100 per person

After the delicious oyster congee on the last visit, and the noodles with beef belly, this time I tried the noodles in Jahjeung sauce, and also tried the wonton noodles.

The wonton noodles tasted how it should, the wontons were reasonable in size with prawn inside it.
The noodles in Jahjeung sauce was fiery hot and the pork was sliced char siu, the only negative comment I would give is their soup base, very strong in MSG, leaving you thirsty for the whole day.

In the midst of Wanchai, this location is quite interesting, right next to a pet shop selling chirpy birds. Eating congee and noodles, with birds chirping away! It feels like being near a park.

Anyway, the noodles here taste how it should be, it also contained miso soya beans as shown on the picture.

However the congee is worth mentioning.
The dried oyster congee I had was amazing, full of oyster and oyster taste!
For $28, they were a bit different from normal dried oysters, still greyish in colour, not the dark orange hard oysters. Yet when you bite into it, the soft body crumbles into sandy lumps, just like salted egg yolk.
Definately worth trying the dried oyster congee, since the oyster is not dried to a hard form state.

In the congee were bits of finely shredded ginger, so fine, that you can taste the texture but not the over powering taste, then there were little bits of fruit peel!
