Triple crab delights
For the second round, there was crab and there were three different items: crabmeat and avocado salad, steamed egg white with crab claw in wine dressing, and crispy bread topped with crab roe.
It was advised to consume the salad first but I ate it last because the taste of the other two were lighter in my opinion and the salad does not taste savory because of the sauce.
steamed egg white with crab claw
I tried this first because it seemed like the taste was the lightest.
I liked the way they paired it with egg white (meringue type) which is usually sweet, but this time it was savoury.
The crab claw and the clear gravy was really nice. In the clear gravy there were some grains of cooked rice.
crispy bread topped with crab roe
The bread beneath the crab was a slice of deep fried mantao so it was slightly sweet.
The crab roe taste was not as strong as I expected, it could have tasted stronger.
crabmeat and avocado
Last but not least the salad, it was fruity and creamy because it had pieces of apple in it as well as avocado.

Smoked Tea Leaves duck
The duck was tender and the tea leaves aroma was just right and not too strong.
The duck skin came of the duck easily too without leaving any fatty residue.

Abalone, braise fish maw and deer sinew soup
The soup was really impressive because the temperature was just right to me and it was not oily.
In other restaurants the soup is always too hot and oily.
I finally got to try the deer sinew which is a more delicate and cleaner form of beef tendons.

Shanghai vegetable rice
THIS IS NOT OFFERED AND WAS SERVED AS AN AD-HOC ITEM because it contains ham.
I really liked this but many others said it was not salty enough despite ham was added.
Anyway I was amazed how the vegetables were shredded so finely and after the cooking process it kept its green colour.
The ham was grounded so finely that it tasted like grounded tuna.
This is the best fried rice I have had because it is non oily.

Loongjeng tea
To finished the food there was Loongjeng tea which matched it quite well and acted as good palate refresher.
Overall the food here is impressive because it is not oily.

東來順 Dong Lai Shun

jason.bonvivant (180 Review(s))
It has been a while since I had some Chinese food so tonight I went to Dong Lai Shun (東來順) at the Royal Garden Hotel with a few friends for some Beijing cuisine. We were expecting to have Peking Duck but it turned out to be sold out. Very disappointing indeed. Then again, we booked two hours in advance but without reserving a the Peking Duck. This place is well know for its lamb hot pot but tonight we didn't feel like having such specialty. I do know that there are many famous dishes here but I rather want to try their normal down-to-earth items. Therefore, we ordered a few starters and light dishes.
We ordered the following items: (1) Tea Leaf smoked egg (龍井煙薰蛋) / (2) Mixed bean paste with salty egg yolk (黃金豆板酥捲) / (3) Crispy Pancake with onion and Sesame (荵油餅) / (4) Stir-fried Egg White with Crab Meat (賽螃蟹) / (5) Bean Paste Eggplant (豆板茄子) / (6) Smoked Duck (樟茶鴨) / (7) Pan Fried Beef Bun (生煎包) / (8) Sesame Paste Dumpling (擂沙湯圓)
(1) Tea Leaf smoked egg (龍井煙薰蛋)
It was well prepared, the egg yolk smoked just about right! I think it was a bit over smoked but the yolk remained semi liquid so it passed my test as a good smoked egg. Of course it must contain strong tea leaf / smoke flavor and it did. Although it was not the best smoked egg I had so far, it was a memorable dish because of the way it was served: on individual artistic spoon. A nice touch indeed.
(2) Mixed bean paste with salty egg yolk (黃金豆板酥捲)
An interesting dish indeed. Not what I would call a typical starter but from what I can see, it requires some skills to prepare. The various pastes were mixed and layered before forming into a roll. Those pastes remained soft so it was not easy to prepare it so that it remained intact as a whole. Although it was mixed with salty egg yolk, the overall taste was rather light. An interesting dish but the bean paste + salty egg yolk flavors are not for everyone.
(3) Crispy Pancake with onion and Sesame (荵油餅)
When we were ordering this dish, the friendly staff asked if we want it done "thin" or "thick." I picked "thick" because I know in many places nowadays, the thin pancakes are the common offering which are likely to be too oily. It was a surprise indeed, it was very well prepared in my opinion. Not too greasy and not too much "bread" or flour in the center. A very crispy outer layer but I do hope there were more green onions because it would taste even better !
(4) Stir-fried Egg White with Crab Meat (賽螃蟹)
A fair dish but nothing much special about it. The egg white was a bit overcooked, caused the texture to be a little rough than it should be. Not a dish prepared by senior chef for sure.
(5) Bean Paste Eggplant (豆板茄子)
Aside from the fact that it was too oily, I liked this dish. I understand that to make this a good dish, excess oil is usually needed so the oily sensation was acceptable to me. Although it was a dish with bean paste which tends to be rich in flavor, the result was not as rich as I hoped. Nonetheless, it remained a good dish to be served with white rice!
(6) Smoked Duck (樟茶鴨)
This was the alternative to the Peking Duck we wanted initially. The meat was tender and the skin was crispy; but it wasn't smoked long enough to have the rich smoke taste it needed. A disappointing dish. It wasn't terrible at all, but without the rich smoke flavor, it does not seem to be a 樟茶鴨!
(7) Pan Fried Beef Bun (生煎包)
I never tried such a bun made of beef and I liked it. It was well prepared indeed. The bun layer was thin and there were some juice captured within as well. The amount of juice within is a very important factor in determining if this item was skillfully prepared. Next time you try this dish somewhere else, check the amount of juice trapped inside without leaking of course. In my opinion, the more the better, but beware of hot meat juice!
(8) Sesame Paste Dumpling (擂沙湯圓)
A delightful surprise! Sticky-rice layer was very thin and stretchy as well with hot black sesame paste within, yummy! A freshly prepared dessert that ended our meal on a positive note.
Likes:
* Great dessert (擂沙湯圓)
* Good Services
* Interesting presentation for the smoked eggs.
* Better than expected Crispy Pancake with onion and Sesame (荵油餅)
Dislikes:
* Overcooked 賽螃蟹
* Under smoked 樟茶鴨
* Greasy 豆板茄子

Hairy Dumpling in HK 東來順
2009-05-21
AC36 (15 Review(s))
Having the open rice set of 4 here. ~$350 per person. The portion is so huge, enough for 6 guy to fill up actually.
Environment is quite nice, food is so so. If you don’t expect too much, just treat it as a normal Chinese restaurant but located in the hotel is fine.
But one point I wanna voice out is, don’t link up this rest. to the Dong Lai Shun in Beijing. Totally different.
I saw some post here said the service of 東來順 is good, indeed, the service is not bad there, but since they charge you at hotel rest. rate, the standard should be at hotel level. If compare wiv a normal Chinese rest. the service here is good, but as a hotel, just like their food – so so. Service at 欣圖軒 or 怡東軒 is far better.
During the dinner, we saw the manager in the rest. is punishing the junior staff that he wrongly deliver a Heineken instead of a Tsing Dao to a tourist couple. But even they found their mistake, since the beer is open, they don’t have any intention to correct their error.
Also, I found a hair on my dumpling, and when I request the manager to change it, he didn’t feel any apology on that, just said he will prepare another one for me, but finally the non-hairy dumpling come >20 mins later, maybe it takes time to have a haircut.
That’s what I experienced from the 東來順 in HK Royal Garden Hotel. And I don’t think this kind of services is acceptable in a hotel in HK.

Lamb lamb ~~

Had dinner with bf in Dong Lai Shun because I wanted to buy a chocolate truffle cake in fine food shop in Royal Garden.
Arrived at 6:20 and should be the first customers. We wanted to have drunk chicken but he waiter said that it is out of stock. How come?? We are the first one tonight but the druck chicken has already been sold.
So, we had...
水晶羊肉 (about $90): the jelly is 入口即溶, minced lamb inside. quite delicious.
茶樹菇炒海哲 ($118). small portion. 海哲 is crispy. only serveral pieces of mushroom. i think it is too expensive.
手抓羊肉(about $90): the lamb ribs is simply boiled in the soup. 100% lamb without other ingredient. very "so". suitable for lamb lover (so I like it).
驢打滾 ($33 for 4 pieces): the red bean roll is covered with 擂沙. more 煙韌 than 糯米滋. not too sweet. quite good!
Tea and appentiser $16 each. Rice $18 each.
Total $441. used $100 cash coupon from Openrice. Thanks!
