What can I say...? My all-time favourite daai paai dong for Bangkok-style street food has opened a lovely little restaurant in Amoy Street and I'm hooked!
While lunchtime is a bit too crowded to enjoy the special dishes they offer, I prefer visiting in the evenings when I have time to indulge...
The Som Tum and Phad Thai are excellent - I didn't expect anything less from this place, but was glad to know that the food is every bit as good as the food from their first "hole in the wall" diner in Stone Nullah Lane on Wan Chai Market.
The curries we've tried so far are all very yummy and I was happy that fresh young coconut is on the menu, too.
Another delight is the "kanaeng" vegetable (don't ask me for the English name, I doubt that there is one - it's like a better, slighly oblong and "open" version of the Brussel sprout - only better tongue). My favourite way is to eat it with salted fish and garlic - yum yum - and the roast chicken was so much better than expected; we could've eaten two of those!
But the piece de resistance, the dish that is my favourite and - TO ME - makes the difference between a good and a great Thai restaurant is the fried fish with green mango salad....
WOW - this dish surpassed all my expectations. It is probably the best thing I've ever tasted and I'm totally addicted to the taste of it. It's crispy crunchy, sour and nutty, spicy and sweet, tender and fragrant... It satisfies every corner of the mouth and makes you beg for more!
What a delight!
I have a new favourite daai paai dong it seems!

Thai style pork knuckle @ The Spice HouseJust OK
2012-08-09
supersupergirl (2533 Review(s))

Came here randomly on a hot day but it was quite stuffy inside that restaurant.

As I did not know what to order, I ordered the set for $40 which includes a drink and pork knuckles with gravy.

The drink came first, it was Lemon tea.
It ruined the start because it was syrupy sweet.
Not long, the pork knuckle arrived but it was luke warm. I was expecting it to be burning especially because it was such a hot day that day.
Anyway, the pork knuckle was dry and tough it seemed like it had been cooked for a long time and left around.
The sauce was a bit too sweet and salty.
