Terrible service and dirty  Dec 16, 2012

Categories : Italian | Western Restaurant | Seafood | Pizza

It's been a few years since I went back to Al Dente, we decided to give it a try but totally regret it.
I just want to warn you their glasses and cutlery are super dirty. There were bits stuck to the wine glass and my glass of water had filthy stains in it. I asked the waiter to change my glass, he ignores me. I ask him again and told him something was dropped inside, he takes my glass and returns with the same one (as the stain were still there).
The bread basket arrives. It was a pile of bread bits. The table next to us had a very nice loaf of bread. Ours was like leftovers thrown into the basket. I asked the waiter for warm bread, he said there aren't any. He said all our bread is like that, he knew I wanted nice fresh bread, without even mentioning, he told me the bread are all in bits, served like that.
Enough said. No wonder they aren't full anymore and it's easy to make reservations now.

There was so much hype about the "Better Than Sex" cake that I purposely made a visit to this new shop to try.

The shop was packed so I could only buy takeout, and I can't believe a cake that costs $60 does not come in a box!!! shocked They said the min buy was 3 pieces to get a box... great. Anyhow, I bought it and left with the cake in a doggie bag.

So for a piece of cake at $60 I would expect it to look mouth watering or appealing. Sorry. NOPE. It was way worst than a cake sold at any local bakery.

Taste. I was expecting too much. It must be. First bite. It was a chocolate cake. Second bite. It was more like a cake mix chocolate cake. huffy

Overall, I must give them credit for creating such an attractive name for the cake. It worked. I bought it. shocked

Its been years since burger diners are all around HK, but a hot dog restaurant is the first. This restaurant has a nice New York style decor but the tables are nicely spread out and open.
We went for lunch and they had lunch sets which were a great deal! Hotdog + fries + coffee/tea. tongue
From their large selection of sausauges I got the Italian sausage with the signature bun while my friend ordered the Sundried Tomato sausage. I loved the sundried tomato sausage... the italian was good too, the flavour was rich but was more expected; however, the sundried tomato was delicious and has a unique flavour. Their skinny fries was also yummy not so oily, and the white truffle sauce is awesome... I basically ate the sauce with my fries. mad
Would defintely go back to try more of the other sausages and probably get a sausage platter as a hotdog would fill me up already. They also have 'sweet potato fries' which look very tempting. With their large selection of beer, I'm definitely going back there for dinner next time. lol

Went there for lunch at around 130pm, and surprisingly it wasn't full. Guess it's kinda pricey for the service and food they serve for a lunch hour.

So as this was a lunch celebration, we ordered mostly a la carte -- Plato Espanol (Parma ham platter); Aquacate y Garnbas (Advocado with Prawn toast); Grilled Prawns with olive oil; and finally from the daily menu, the Beef Paella.

The ham platter was superb... had 5 types of ham/sausage and 2 types of cheese. All had their distinctive tastes and really couldn't stop eating!!! They served with a basket of bread, which was crispy and went well with the cheese. tongue

The prawn toast was quite small, really a bite size, but the mix of advocado and prawn was nice indeed! The prawn was quite fresh and the toast was crisy! Encore! lol

The grilled prawns and the beef paella were disappointing... the prawns were simply grilled, and didnt have much taste to it, and the paella had no taste to it, but the beef was marinated and cooked well.

Forgot to mention, the service is not so good there... the waitress wouldnt give us any recommendations as she claimed all dishes were popular shocked and while we were eating, some girl came up to promote the restaurant's VIP card... errr.. thanks for interrupting our meal.

24 Month Parma Ham
24 Month Parma Ham

I've always wanted to try this restaurant... even when it was opened for so many years at IFC... Finally this year my friend took me to the new Harlan for my birthday!

We ordered our dishes to share, for appetizer, we ordered the "24 month parma ham", and for our main course, we ordered the "Penne in tomato sauce" and "Spanish Pork Variation".

The Parma ham was extremely satisfying not so salty and the portion was very generous. lol

The penne was cooked with sweet onions, chili, basil, garlic, tomato cream, russian vodka and parmesan cheese. To be honest, its not surprisingly but the taste was just right and penne was al dente. smile The waiter was very nice and helped us split the portion into 2. tongue

The Pork Variation was better than expected, but was not really my favorite as the variation were 'confit cheek, pork terrine, and grilled shoulder'. The confit cheek was delicious, rich in texture with perfect seasaoning; the grilled shoulder was acceptable but not too special; and the pork terrine was my least favorite as there were chunks of fat in it (its a personal preference I must admit... I'm kinda health conscious... mad )

The meal was so far so good and the waiter recommended a very nice white wine to go with our meal. Forgot to mention the bread basket was also good, with 3 types of bread all warmed... smile

Finally came the dessert, we ordered what the waiter also recommended, the "Valrhona" Warm Chocolate Cake, Passion Mousse and Rum Raisin Ice Cream. This was a really good wrap up of the dinner. Its really been a while since I found a restaurant with a nice warm and soft warm chocolate cake... the texture and sweetness was well balanced, and honestly, half of this cake is was not enough. I'll definitely go back for this! I wonder if I can just walk in for desserts? tongue
