Round The Corner, 90% Smile Feb 27, 2012

We were meeting friends for a meal on a Sunday. A slightly odd location but I am happy it's there. Round the corner from a well known commercial building in Kwun Tong and a stones through from Laguna city, we are glad we have found a good quality restaurant, that is so close. The venue has multiple types of events we have yet to experience, salsa dance classes, and live bands being two on offer.

On arrival I was met by pleasant aromas and a modern smart, carpeted, interior that made me feel immediately comfortable. Table cloths were a clean and neat white, with comfortable dark chairs and the place was well lit, with soft lights and candles.

The toilets were, modern and reasonably spacious smile a pleasure to use and always reassuring about the owners attitude toward hygiene.

Coming from Britain, Indian food is commonplace, as is Italian pasta dishes and Thai offerings. I have had my fair share of each, but rarely in a place that offers this many cuisines. This is a hard thing to do well and I am pleased to say Corner90 achieves this with reasonable success. The best food and their primary style is Indian cuisine but by no means every style they had on offer was tried

The quality of the starters and main course to follow were impressive. Sizable, tasty samosas with picante and flavourful dips are probably the best I have had to date. Naans and spicy curried dishes that were not overpowering albeit for a seasoned curry tongue and were bursting with aromatic flavours. The salads were fresh and cooling but the Italian pasta dishes whilst resembling classic Italian food were not as impressive as I would have expected for the price. This is perhaps the evidence of over-complicating a menu and trying to achieve too many styles. My taste-buds on the whole were very satisfied.

For a western meal in Hong Kong I found that it was averagely priced. By reducing the amount of styles on offer, food savings could be made and passed on to the other dishes making them greater value. If dishes were a tiny bit cheaper I am sure people would frequent more often but still it is worth a visit in my mind.

Not too pretentious and not trying to be, a pleasant dining experience with good service and good food.

Eat well.

Booking via Groupon I thought I got a good deal, how wrong was I.shocked

In summary, avoid at all costs

The images of the interior looked good but it was clever photography. At some point it seemed that the restaurant might have been set up to be a higher class restaurant but on entry, it looked like a slightly better fast food noodlery. Probably not cutting it, or getting the business and having to diversify. The booths on the side made it a slightly nicer experience over the battered tables in the centre.

The toilet was half clean and respectable, I say half clean because it was clean as far as the cleaner could reach up the wall.

The food was a huge disappointment, a five course meal at lunch-time was booked because the evening was fully booked, somewhat surprisingly in hindsight but then it was Christmas and a Sunday. Perhaps the good chef's that are capable of western food come in the evening. The evening menu did look professional, but they shouldn't have offered the menu to us during the day if they couldn't fulfill it but then...I'm not going back to see if they can cook in the evening.

The starters were served on a bed of rotting salad and were disappointing frozen prawn Caesar salad which I've never seen before and deep fried offerings that are very hard to make bad, but they were not good.

The soup may as well have been and probably was canned creamed chicken and mushroom soup passed off as Lobster.

The main course of turkey in a red sauce sounded appetising on the menu, but what arrived was turkey ham on the same less than fresh salad and what looked like congealed blood. Whilst the sauce tasted fruity it had lumps that looked like blood clots. This over turkey ham and salad was disgraceful. My wifes offerings were of a similar standard.

The desserts increased the score from being a rock bottom no marks to maybe half a mark out of ten, mainly because they were unlimited.. The chocolate pudding was average and the cheesecakes reasonably tasty, my favourite being the Tiramisu. They came in approximate 2cm by 2cm cubes so they needed to be unlimited.

If I hadn't already paid by groupon, I wouldn't have stayed. huffy

Merry Christmas...not really. sad

Birthday meal, tasty treats Smile Dec 22, 2011

We arrived after shortly after 9pm,having booked for 18 people. Like many places, food is cheaper after 9pm with last orders being at 10.45pm. We were seated by around 9.15, a reasonable time considering our party and some people arriving later.

The decor was simple and modern with plenty of dark wood, bamboo and stone and well lit. A pleasant bustling atmosphere greeted us.

Toilets are very important to me as I spend a lot of time in them. Many facilities in Hong Kong restaurants and bars are really disgusting and leave me feeling dirtier having just entered them and can't wait to get out. These facilities were well equipped in a modern style and reasonable clean. A pleasant surprise.

I have no idea if the menu's at this place are available in English. As a Brit abroad, dining with my Chinese in-laws is a pleasure. I get to try lots of more local restaurants and I have no problems in getting the menu's translated for me, and in general they order some tasty stuff that they like which usually means I Iike.

My experiences are perhaps better or easier than some English speaking groups that may find ordering that strange looking seafood, a little challenging, and may confuse the frustrated, constipated, bemused look of waiter for a general grump as opposed to them just trying to understand an order in his or her third language.

We largely had a buffet of sushi, and sashimi. First up were tasty morsels of marinated scallop, conch, tofu and salads. I was in my element loving tasty bites of food. The quality of the sashimi and sushi to follow was fairly standard and presented quite well on large dishes, the flavours were good but not mind blowing. I had various pieces of beef, pork and lamb in various marinades too. I cannot complain about any of the food I popped into my over-sized mouth.

Particularly tasty to me were the following. A boiled egg with a runny yolk on the inside that seem to be soaked in a sweet soy sauce or tea like liquid. The cow tongue in a picante sauce was also a good texture with a surprising burst of fiery but not too hot flavour. The barbequed mushrooms were amazing, but I wouldn't be able to eat too many, as the smoky flavour may overwhelm some. The squid rings in a sweet teriaki sauce were good and finally the theatre of the last dish was great. Deep fried glutinous rice balls filled with a minced squid and drizzled in either salad cream or cheese sauce (i think). Atop this fine shavings of dried fish were added. The heat from the ball made the fish flakes move as thought they were tiny sea creatures moving in the ocean currents. I sat watching it for five minutes before putting them in my mouth and enjoying their taste.

Service was quick and efficient. Not overly friendly but then we didn't worry about that...they took the orders and we got the food that was the deal.

Price wise I cannot comment as I didn't pay. Was it value for money, I'm not sure, possibly not, but it was good and you probably got what you paid for. Keep it up.
