Lunch with my aunt Just OK Jan 28, 2012

Categories : Italian | Western Restaurant

I went to visit my aunt yesterday and she decided to take me here for lunch. I am half Italian so she reckoned that I should try the stuff and see how its like. tongueThe restaurant itself was rather like a "Cha chaan teng" or like a hong kong style cafe. However they served more fusion italian/japanese style food. We waited about 5 minutes for a table, and there is free refill of warm water. It was also very good that the menu was in English and Chinese. lolSo we started with the Spaghetti with creamy mushroom sauce. Personally, this was my favourite out of all things we ordered. Despite the fact that it had this really asian feel to it (did not taste or feel authentic), i still liked the aromas and flavours of it. Normally, I would expect the pasta at Chinese style Italian restaurants to be overcooked, but I was surprised that it was actually al dente so I was quite pleased. The price of this restaurant was also astonishingly cheap! I think it was like 30 something dollars for this relatively big plate of spaghetti! lol

Next we also ordered some wedge fries (only $14!!!). This was just an appetizer, though it came after the pasta... It was very good too, reminded me a bit of the fries at KFC. Crispy on the outside but soft and potatoey in the inside. smile

I also ordered a mushroom pizza for $26. It was rather mediocre to tell the truth. I found the crust very thick, and the cheese was already solidified by the time it got here even though it was still warm.. There was barely any mushroom in it.. mainly just corn and peppers and stuff. I mean, for $26 I guess it's ok though.

Next up, my aunt randomly decided to order a seafood risotto, as it came with a free coffee. I thought that the risotto rice seemed to be more like Japanese rice, than true risotto rice, and reminded me more of fried rice than risotto. It was only about $38 including the coffee as this was part of the set lunch menu (you could also choose from two types of soups or milk tea) and it was also quite a large portion. Again although it wasn't amazing, it wasn't too bad. There wasn't much seafood in the rice though, just some clams which were cut up, and some shrimps. The coffee, however was very delicious. It said it was "freshly grounded" on the menu, however I had some doubts. Nonethless it was very delicious and I really enjoyed it.

Overall it was a positive experience. The food didn't take too long to arrive (with the exception of the pizza). I think I'll go back next time I go and visit my aunt. The squid ink risotto sounds quite delicious, however I don't think I would bother with the pizza next time. smile

Lunch with a friend Just OK Oct 23, 2011

It had been a while since i last saw my friend, so we decided to meet each other and have lunch. Turns out he already booked a table before coming to pick me up therefore we didnt have to wait for a table.

It seems as if we had been forgotten, however we were quickly led to a round table which was originally meant for 4 people. We ordered the San Remo Salad (avocado, salad, tomatoe, pine nuts and some creamy sauce) as well as the mushroom fusilli and shared it. Luckily the food only took about 10 minutes to arrive. My friend also ordered an iced lemon tea which appeared to have been forgotten about as it never cam. mad

The salad was actually really good. It was originally with pancetta, but since i don't eat meat, we told them to not put it. The creamy sauce was a perfect match fo the avocado and pine nuts. Not very "italian" but it's a nice twist.

The mushroom fusili was also very delicious, it was a little cold but I didn't mind too much. The mushrooms were absolutely scrumptious and the cream sauce was lovely. I really liked it.

The waiters regularly filled up the water and didn't take too long bringing the bill which was good. However it was quite noisy with crying children and loud groups, not to mention the passer-bys with the whole fake al-fresco thing going on (i got a tan!!!). Overall it was an enjoyable experience. smile

Rendez-vous with a friend Just OK Oct 12, 2011

Categories : International | Western Restaurant

So today I came to Cafe Key West for lunch. It was my first time in isquare, and she told me that this was a nice place with good food, so I thought, why not. I thought that isquare was surprisingly quiet for a mall situated in such a crowded location, despite the fact that it was a weekday. The cafe was quite empty when we arrived so there was no need to wait for a table.

Since me and my friend don't eat meat but eat fish and seafood, we decided to order the only two things we could eat on the set lunch menu and share it : an octopus spaghetti with some sort of Japanese sauce and linguini with clams and mushrooms. At $56 and $58 respectively, with a soup and coffee or tea. There was also complimentary water, with waiters who actually remembered to refill your water regularly which was good smile

The soup arrived with a croissant. It was some sort of vegetable soup - not my favourite, but it wasn't too bad, I finished it. However, I must say the croissant was atrocious! It tasted like a stale croissant, maybe I am accustomed to the delicious croissants I eat in cafes in Paris, but it was horrible. The pastry wasn't nice and flaky or crispy, it was hard, dry, and didn't have that delicious aroma. So I had to dunk it in my soup to make it taste a little more edible. mad

Then the pastas arrived. The octopus spaghetti I found a little sweet, and I mean a little very sweet. The sauce was some sort of fusion Japanese style thing, and it wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing. The pasta wasn't overcooked (thank god) and I thought that the capsicums and onions in the pasta were very sweet which was good. There was also these strange orange strands of something on top of it as garnish, but I wasn't too sure what it was. It reminded me of shrimp antenna thingys. I thought the presentation was nice though.

The clam and mushroom linguini, on the other hand, I really liked. I thought it was delicious. The spaghetti itself lacked a little taste, but eaten with mushrooms or clams it was fine. The clams were full of flavour, however there were only 6 in the whole plate. There was also some greenish with it, I think it was garlic and pesto? It did give it an extra kick. True, it is very unitalian (Italian speaking! Definitely completely different from the traditional Spaghetti con Vongole) however I liked it. The linguini was cooked al dente, which is just the way it was supposed to be, however the dish lacked presentation and was just, quite simply, a plate of linguini.

I was expecting some horrid tasting coffee, but I was shocked to taste decent coffee. With the creamer, it tasted very good, I was AMAZED as I was expecting instant coffee. It was a great way to end the meal.

Since I had a reservation, I didn't have to wait for a table, however our table was pretty much right next to the door and we saw a huge queue not to mention some woman with a mike that kept yelling stuff, so it reminded us of a yum cha place or something -_- Luckily we were a very loud bunch so it did not really disrupt us.

So I decided to have my Birthday dinner/party here as I didn't know where else to go, and I thought that it seemed like a good place to go as a group of 8. So we started to order stuff. Since I don't eat meat my friends were very nice and decided to stick with mainly vegetarian food, except for one pizza. We started off with an apetizer of garlic bread. It was sort of thick, but it was still very yummy, maybe it was cuz we were dying of hunger, i'm not sure. It had some chopped up tomatoes to go with it which reminded me of the bruschetta my grandmother makes me. We then realize that we didn't have any water, or any drinks, unlike the other tables which seemed to have complimentary water, so we complained to the waiter and asked for water which we got after about 5 minutes. Refills took ages as we seemed to be in quite an obscure corner and so we were constantly forgotten by the waiters. huffy

Next we ordered a mushroom pizza, which I thought was heaven. I absolutely loved it, it was delicious, it tasted different to the Italian pizza I am normally accustomed to, but it was relatively thin (although they had some ultra thin pizzas which we didn't try) and was very cheesy. One problem was that it was sort of warm when it arrived, and not hot so the cheese already started to solidify. not good. But the taste was still good. We also ordered 2 carbonara with no meat (so basically white cheese sauce and peas, hahahah!) and i've got to say it was quite good. It was kind of bland, obviously without the bacon, however it was still very cheesy nonetheless. We then ordered a hawaiian bbq chicken pizza (for the other people, so I don't know how it tasted, but they seemed to like it) and last but not least we also had a 5 cheeses pizza, which was extremely cheese, with molten cheese everywhere, fresh tomatoes and was just heaven. lol

One thing that sort of bugged us was how we told the waiters to divide the pizza up into eighths as they seemed to not be able to count properly and cut them all up weird, with huge pieces and tiny pieces, with a total of 7 pieces. Seriously?! Can you not count and cut equal pieces of pizza?! huffy

The best and funniest thing happened, when I asked for my cake to be taken to me. The waiter already had a cake in his hand, with a lit candle. It was a tiny little mango cake. Definitely not my cake, I had a cheesecake. I ask him to fetch my cake, and he replies, i've got it right here. I look at the cake and say, that's not my cake. His face drops. WHAT?! and he instantly blows the candle out and runs off. It was HILARIOUS. mad I can't believe I had to pay $50 for them to get me the wrong cake. (well and keep my cake in a fridge)

Overall it was incredibly cheap. It was about $560 excluding the cake charge of $50, therefore we paid a total of $70 each and each had 3 slices of pizza and a small plate of spaghetti, which was very filling, especially with the cake. We were all so shocked by how cheap this place is, despite the terrible service and have decided to come back very soon.

Please remember that the portions here are HUGE. I mean it is an American Italian Restaurant, so bear in mind the American sized portions that your food will come in. smile

Sushi with friends! Smile Oct 03, 2011
Share with MessengerShare on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Sushi Bar | Sushi/Sashimi

This is probably my new favourite sushi place. The price is INCREDIBLE, $9 for all sushi (you get two unless specified), and all side dishes such as dumplings (3), fried scallops (2), udon in soup, meso soup, fried tofu, you name it! And what's even better? A plate of sashimi with 4 SLICES? $18!!! Compared to the standard $32 at genki sushi, it really is great! lol

So I regularly come here afterschool with my friends as it is quite close to my school and since we're students we are sometimes on a tight budget, not to mention that sushi is a great afterschool snack as the portions are quite small. It usually isn't full so i've never waited for a table. The waiters are friendly and very helpful, as one time I went with some friends from the UK and the ordering sheets were only written in Chinese, and since I can only speak Chinese, I had a really rough time ordering, so the waitress helped and read out each thing for me. However, they now have English on the sheets. So I had the standard salmon sushi, which was good, there wasnt too much rice or too little salmon, which was good. The cheese and shrimp tempura roll is another of my favourites, however I would prefer if the cheese was still melted and not solidified when it arrives, it kind of ruins the appeal. The seared salmon sushi is always over cooked, i prefer if it is just slightly seared on the surface, not fully cooked -_- I do not recommend the fried scallops as it is tiny and not even scallop. You might as well buy a pack in the supermarket or kai bo and cook it at home, it'll taste the same. The udon is something that me and my friends always order. However the weird thing is that it seems to taste different every single time! It is however very filling and so we sometimes share it (it may look small, but its not really!) . The conveyer belt, although it moves is almost always empty, so don't bother waiting for something to come on there, you'll just see the same stuff going around and around.

The service is average, however last time I went they took so long to bring the udon, I think they might've forgotten? Not to mention after we paid the bill, they took 10 minutes to bring me $1 change. Made me late for a lesson, which was quite annoying huffy

The manager there is always very nice. One time he accidentally got me something which I didn't order and he ended up giving it to me for free. Then he came back with some red bean paste glutinous balls as a complimentary dessert for me and my friends which was very sweet of him smile
Overall it is a great place to go as it is cheap, filling and yummy. Service can be average but you pay for what you get!
oh and there is 10% service charge.
