Came here for a food top-up after a hungry and dissatisfying dinner at Enomod.

Interesting interior design with Japanese comics in big format all over the walls. Beautiful dark wooden tables with deep wood brains. Good music, lighting, nice happening vibe.

Ox Tongue ($48 per stick) - hot and delicious (though ever so slightly chewy) with just the right seasoning.
Kalbi ($38) - really nice tender beef rib.
Minced chicken stick stuffed with cheese in egg yolk & soy sauce ($38) - super delicious with some soft bone included to add texture. Cheese provided some good umami. And what could go wrong with egg yolk and soy sauce? Fabulous.
Oyster wrapped with bacon ($38) - two oysters on one stick. Nicely done. Bacon was not too salty or chewy.
Ebi ramen ($58) - came in a small-ish bowl. Delicious prawn-infused soup reminiscent of Malaysian prawn mee soup, with added richness from the miso. The noodles were Sapporo style bouncy thick noodles (my preference over limp white ones so popular these days). The single slice of cha siu was lovely.

Recommended Dish(es):  Chicken stick stuffed with cheese, kalbi, ebi ramen

Over-hyped, over-priced Cries May 03, 2013

Friday night dinner after work. Decided to come here after seeing some positive reviews in the media. The restaurant was fully booked so we got two high seats by the bar. Interior décor was very nice, someone had obviously put a lot of effort into the design. The Enomod logo was subtly included in many of the surfaces (backs of chairs etc.), very cute. The lighting was great and the vibe busy and cosy. Unfortunately that was the end of the good part.

Service: waiter's English was very halting, but responses were not much improvement after switching to Cantonese. He did not know the menu at all and could not give much by way of recommendations. We ordered 4 things (haloumi roll, saffron chicken, slow-cooked lamb rump, carbonara pasta). Food was SLOW (took 45 minutes for the first dish to come).

Food:
The lamb ($138) was very good quality but lukewarm. There were only two pieces (around 6cm x 4cm x 4cm)... I know commodities are expensive, but this was a bit much.
Carbonara was fine. Al dente pasta with a nice kick from the ham.
The haloumi roll ($98) - rolled in zucchini - had a slightly off twinge of chemical sweetness to it. Could not put my finger on exactly why...
The chicken didn't come at all. They turned up with beef instead, which we sent back.

Don't think I will be going back until they tweak the menu and portion sizes. Also... could not really discern which bit was the "social" bit. Maybe the sharing? But any tapas is all about sharing. In any case, will not be back. We left still hungry so we went to Torimen (yakitori place) right next door, which was really quite good.

Two of us went for a casual weeknight dinner. Sat downstairs (simple menu) because the upstairs dining room was full (quite amazing for a rainy Tuesday night).

As others have already mentioned, good but expensive antipasti ($128 for 1, $228 for own choice of 2, $328 for own choice of 3, $400 for chef's choice of 4, +10% of course).

For starters, we got the burrata with cherry tomatoes (quite creamy and well seasoned, but not as good as the Four Seasons') and calamari with fennel and onions (chef had a deft hand with the vinegar, well-balanced, good ingredients). Overall comment would be that portions are on the small side for the price and presentaiton was rustic (the two were just put side by side in a mound in one plate.

For mains we shared a pizza (sausage & broccoli, $178+10%). The pizza base was great, strong texture, beautifully bubbly, nicely charred, soft and chewy, not crunchy. The toppings were also good, high quality Italian sausage balanced out by some greens. There seemed to be just cheese and zero tomato sauce (different ot what some previous diners have mentioned). Quite pleased with it but would not necessarily like to pay this much for a pizza. Think an excellent Indian place could easily rival the base with a nice soft hot chewy naan at a fraction of the price.

Interior was very trendy, dark, with music booming loudly. Probably ok for a friends' night out but not so great for a date.

Dinner for 2 on a Friday night. The restaurant is very small, with a ground floor and 1/F, each floor with capacity of around 10-12 people. Newly done up, but the interior design is not the most coherent. Conveniently located near the start of Gough Street, and excellent food & service. Choice of set dinners: 4-course ($380), 5-course ($480) and 6-course (don't remember how much). Went for the $380 menu.

Starters:
Baked snails in filo pastry. Piping hot and nicely combined with cheese. High quality snails, did not have the pungent earthiness of lesser versions.
Smoked duck salad. Very good meat. Interesting dressing made with yuzu vinegar.

Soup: rich, dense mushroom soup with slice of fresh truffle. Again piping hot, served with love.

Mains:
Crab pasta. Linguine with a small mountain of fresh crab meat piled on top. Labour intensive and commendable.
Baked dover sole was great, came with a delicious sauce.

Dessert:
Combination plate which was ok, not great. An ordinary chocolate mousse cup, some kind of layer cake. The best was a lovely creme brulee with thin crunchy top.

Tea or coffee: normal.

Dinner in a group of 5 friends, sharing all dishes.

Caprese salad - buffalo mozarella wonderful and fragrant, rivaling the one at four season's. Generous with the basil, dressed with chopped and topped with whole leaves.

Carpaccio - beef not bad, dressing very light (or was it no dressing at all?). I'm not that into raw beef, so can't say much. Topped with hearty, honest shavings of parmiggiano cheese

Caesar - nice crunchy fresh leaves, dressing was just right, no overpowering anchovies, and thankfully not oversalted.

3 pastas - bucatini, with spicy tomato and bacon. Good. Creamy cheesy spirals, steaming hot, al dente, also very good. Lasagna, portion relatively small, sitting on a bed of leaves. No need to try.

1 pizza - very good dough, slightly thicker than pizza express, with more personality, more chewy. Topped with thin lava of hot hot hot, simple, delicious cheese & tomato.

2 desserts - panna cotta surprisingly good. Great texture, none of the usual rubberiness. Crazy chocolate underwhelming.

Overall a very good experirence. Nice place for casual group gathering.
