Pineapple bun tea time Smile Jun 30, 2012

As I make it my goal to stop by this place every Saturday before work to pick up a bun and their infamous iced milk tea - I frequent this quaint little bakery/cha caan teng quite a bit but never thought to write a review about it
The thing I like most about this bun shop is their unique buns - most bakeries sometimes have an overly "airy" quality to their buns (and as a result aren't very filling) - I have found this, ESPECIALLY, to be the case of pineapple buns! - BUT this place has a dense, slightly doughy, texture to their buns making "bun-eating" at this place an unrivalled experience.

I remember the first time I came here I was surprised to have had a bo lau yao (pineapple bun w/butter) which was actually filling! (And it is for this reason why I continue to return)
The Staff, however, can be rude and brash, however I hate to generalise as there is one guy who remembers me (and my order) and is extremely accommodating and friendly - and he tries to make conversation by practising his English with me

Overall verdict: go for a bun and an iced milk tea. I also reccomend any combinations for the pineapple bun, whether it be on its own, with a slab of butter, with luncheon meat, egg and ham or just egg/just ham. This pineapple bun does stand out above the rest and you'll either love it.. Or hate it

I love places that put their own unique take on an old classic so I came here with the view to sampling their infamous lotus seed paste cocktail bun - but got slightly carried away -(and how it's still a cocktail bun without the usual coconut and leftover bun filling I don't know - but it was still a nice bun in its own right)
In addition to the 2 "cocktail buns", I also ordered a "bo lau yao" (pineapple bun w/butter), a coconut roll and a "dou sa bao" (bun w/red bean paste filling)
Having felt like I'd just bought half my rights to the shop! - I was pleasantly surprised to find the 5 buns came to $20!
The lady helping out was very pleasant and accommodating - which is rare for a cha caan teng - so either way I'll come back just to "bong tsun" (~"help them"?).
So it's just my luck that the buns were nice too! Generally the bread was soft and not too airy which can especially be typical of a pineapple bun (which may sometimes have a cardboard like texture!). The red bean and lotus seed pastes were very smooth and sufficiently sweet.
The only remark I will make is that I generally like the pineapple bun to my bo lau yao to be warm so that it balances out the cold slab of butter.. But that would be slightly nit-picky (as I did arrive late morning) and the bun did emit a unique aroma about it
Verdict: go early for a nice breakfast bun. If you aren't sure what to order, the friendly staff are sure to help you out

i'm a fan of chinese bakeries and i'm an even bigger fan of sampling unique foods of any cuisinei arrived early, around opening time, for a nice quiet and relaxing breakfast... not typical of your usual cha caan teng experience they had an array of baked goods on display at the front and some unique to this shop (i.e their pies and their bo lo bau - pineapple bun made with real pineapple!?) but big a gwei mui i couldn't read the menu a asked the lady to help me pick a pie what arrived was this beautiful golden hue of a pie, nicely rounded and still warmafter a bite (it revealed some luncheon meat and egg) the crust crumbled in my mouth and was tantalising on the taste buds - this pie was everything i love about chinese bakeries - a nice (buttery) sweet crust (exterior) which balances the savoury filling (in this case, luncheon meat)in addition i ordered the pineapple bun and an iced milk tea, but had to take the bun away with me as i was short on timei'll definitely be returning to sample the other baked goods... just thinking about it is getting my juices going!yumm

been dying to try this place out to see what the fuss was about and very nearly didn't make it as i was ravenous making my way over from hong kong side... but i thought id be a trooper and brave it through...and boy am i glad i did!i ordered the hamburger with egg and an iced lemon tea... ($26)when it came the sauce was dripping out the side so i had a quick lick and it was to die for .. yet another sweet, slightly tangy sauce to compliment the juicy patty (i'm a huge fan - see my wing lok yuen entry)the egg was an ingenious touch (i'd never think to add egg!) and the whole thing really came together nicelyone bite and i was hooked (or should i say lick!?) -that's all it took!this place without a doubt puts all the major burger names to shame!go get several today! i know i'll definitely be back!p.s save some room for a quick trip over to mammy pancake and sample one of their egg waffles! another must try!

best egg waffles! Smile Jun 26, 2012

big fan of hk style food and have heard about these amazing spins on hk egg waffles for a long time..finally got to try one today and i was not disappointed!ordered the chocolate chip egg waffles for $15 and waited 5 minutes while they made itthe chocolate chips mean you get that intense hit of chocolate rather than the diluted plain taste of your usual chocolate flavoured egg wafflesthe menu one the front is in chinese, english and japanese and they sell normal waffles and a couple of other variations of egg waffles (one of them being sesame) all for $13-15they also sell drinks (homemade lemonade and iced lemon tea) - again around $13 mark.it comes in a perforated brown paper bag so the heat doesn't cause condensation as keeps the waffles nice and fresh. best eaten on the spot as they won't keep long... not that i really tried to be honest! was too good to leaveoverall verdict: worth the trip!
